CQUENCE HEALTH INVESTS IN COMPANIES TRANSFORMING CARE

Visible and behind-the-scenes changes both reflect and reinforce the distinctions between Omaha-grown CQuence Health (formerly, CQuence Health Group) and other investment companies.

Notably, CQuence Health’s new brand and communications identity is a reflection of its evolution over the past 12 years to span and support diverse and innovative health care companies.

Mike Cassling, chairman and CEO, represents top leadership of the 40-year-old flagship holding, Cassling.

“In 2020, we launched an organization-wide initiative to impact 1 billion lives by 2030,” he stated. “This is an audacious goal, but speaks to our genuine passion to make a meaningful difference in health care.”

While Cassling indicated its vision to improve access and outcomes by investing in and partnering with like-minded companies is a constant, he said it needed to evolve its business model – including a broader array of professional services to offer to its holding companies.

“And we’ve partnered with co-investors and health care-focused funds to expand our impact,” he explained. “With so much positive change taking place, along with a move to a new corporate headquarters, it felt like the right time to modernize and evolve our brand identity to align with the evolution of CQuence as a health care company.”

These efforts also reportedly “dovetailed nicely” with its flagship’s evolution, with Cassling recently adapting its own brand to reflect a wider range of imaging, surgical and therapeutic solutions with stronger community health care aims at heart.

According to Creative Director Justin Eggspuehler, CQuence

Health’s brand efforts, announced in late May, began with internal discussions about their vision and future positioning, and eventually incorporated employee and customer feedback.

“These are critical audiences; employees execute the brand, meaning they make it a reality, and customers are the recipient of that experience and ultimately are the ones who define what your brand is or isn’t,” he noted. “We surveyed employees and led focus groups to understand how they defined our previous brand.”

Eggspuehler referred to pulling in teams “at every level” to discuss what must be retained as the company grows and collective aspirations.

“This followed a similar process that we took at Cassling,” he said. “From there, we worked with an Omaha-based brand development studio, Turnpost, to bring our renewed brand identity to life.”

Aligning with Substantive Change

VP of Marketing Tana Phelps took a step back, highlighting how “CQuence” is a play on “sequence” and its process of supporting health care companies from step No. 1 to “infinity and everywhere along that sequence.”

“Launching a startup company — even scaling an existing health care entity — is really hard,” Phelps explained. “You have challenges at every turn, whether that’s securing enough cash to make payroll, finding talented employees, or positioning your solution to resonate with the market. There are headwinds, no matter your stage of business.”

She stated that CQuence Health’s approach to supporting health care

entities takes as much off of their plates as possible.

“So, they can focus on their core product or service and make their biggest impact,” Phelps added. “We wanted our brand to better reflect that passion.”

Similarly, its logo featuring an infinity symbol within the “CQ” represents its “infinite commitment,” she said, to investing in the health companies that add up to their goal of positively impacting 1 billion patient lives by the aforementioned 2030 timeframe.

Plus, she continued, the symbol stands for a connection to health care as both employees and as patients, and the “endless work” involved with responding to changes and growth in industry needs.

“The new look needed to not only align with our evolving identity and our purpose, but also with the brands of our flagship holding, Cassling, as well as our newest holding, Phase Medical,” Phelps added. “We also dropped the word ‘group’ in both our name and logo to broaden and expand our offerings and emphasize our position as a health care company.”

She suggested these efforts reinforce CQuence as a vehicle to accelerate improved health care and better lives for patients.

“Traditionally, investing in a company is something superficial that involves funding rounds, capital investments and doing everything possible to maximize return,” Phelps remarked. “Revenue is certainly important but … our investments very intentionally and strategically seek to make a difference in the world, too.”

She reinforced how CQuence supports firms not only through cash, but also via business strategy, operational help in research, accounting, marketing, HR, IT and their ilk – those “key pain points” all startups and scaling businesses contend with, and their team is uniquely positioned to help.

As an example, in early July, CQuence Health announced its new investment partnership with WasteMedX, described as an eco-friendly and “cleaner, safer, more sustainable waste solution for health care organizations.”

When asked about progress toward the goals associated with these most recent efforts, Phelps referred to a wall in its office at 13810 FNB Pkwy, which features a real-time counter of patient lives. At the time of this writing, the numbers impacted through CQuence and its companies approached 176 million.

“The ticker is constantly increasing, right now at the rate of one life every three seconds,” she said. “This is a great way of making our goal more tangible and helping our team stay connected to what really matters — how we positively impact patients.”

Healthy Care, Community, Culture

As it looks toward reaching the 1 billion-mark in the next six and a half years, Cassling emphasized its “army” of team members and holding companies, and the addition of like-minded firms to its portfolio. As they help these companies succeed in the health care space, he continued, “We’ll increase the number of patients we can help at an even quicker rate …”

In a nod to its commitment to improving the health of communities, VP of People and Culture Bruce Stec emphasized CQuence’s commitment to improving the health of communities by providing volunteer time off for its employees.

“In 2022, our employees logged over 120 volunteer hours, and we are on track to exceed that this year,” he said. “Recently, at an all-hands company event, our team put together 1,500 kits for local charitable organizations, including Boys and Girls Clubs of America, Children’s Cancer Connection and Angels Among Us.”

Its committee, CQ Cares, plans and participates in volunteer events, charities not limited to Ronald McDonald House, Salvation Army, and Food Bank for the Heartland.

“CQ Cares usually has at least one opportunity per month employees can volunteer for, and if none of those fulfills our passion, we encourage our team to use their VTO for a cause they are passionate about,” Stec stated.

More broadly to its “culture,” Stec said they also frequently seek feedback and use those insights to improve the work experience.

“We also strive to ensure they are connected to our mission and vision and ready to serve our customers,” he said. “By giving employees a consistent voice, they are able to take part in crafting an incredible experience for customers.”

Cassling summed up CQuence by saying that, when people hear “investment company,” certain images come to mind; for instance, “boring,” “faceless,” and “very buttoned-up.”

“That’s simply not who we are at CQuence Health,” he said. “We dealt with this disconnect for years with new hires and partner companies who came to us expecting one thing and finding something entirely different.

“We’re people who care about people, and we truly believe that the health care companies we invest in have the potential to change the world.”

He said the work they do is unique; the same goes for the companies they support financially and otherwise.

“We wanted our brand to reflect what we’ve known for so long, and after many years, we’ve finally gotten there,” Cassling noted. “We can’t wait to see our companies and our team continue to grow and make a difference in health care.”

Wave of Automation ONSLAUGHT OF OPPORTUNITIES ARISE TO HARNESS AI

By definition, automation refers to any technologies or operations that are automatically controlled, rather than controlled by human labor. Increasingly, advancements in artificial intelligence and language processing models have improved automation at a rapid pace.

This flurry of activity presents an onslaught of new potential opportunities for those businesses in the private data repository space, as well as for the investors who put their money where their mouth is.

John Bunting, CEO and founder of Omaha-based Beeso Studio, said the organization helps startups locally as well as from across the country — and around the globe, in some cases — to build and scale their technology.

“The biggest automation investments we have seen over the last five years have been in AI/machine learning and natural language processing (NLP),” Bunting said. “By shifting manual entry and other menial tasks over

to automation using AI and NLP, it has enabled users to increase efficiency, achieve higher quality and reduce overall costs.”

As technology has advanced, Bunting continued, the cost of automation that harnesses AI and NLP has been reduced, while capabilities on this front have only multiplied. He described how they build out a real-time coaching software that uses AI and NLP for one of their startups, Abstrakt.

“Abstrakt’s real-time call coaching software has reduced the time to onboard agents and has given managers better insight into call performance,” Bunting said.

Phoenix-based Abstrakt is described in a summary on Beeso Studio’s website as a “conversational AI platform for sales reps that has AI and natural language processing call coaching and conversation insights …” It was noted that these capabilities “lead to winning more deals.”

Bunting said Abstrakt’s call coaching software is currently handling 10,000

calls a day and, at the time of this writing, the startup was on track to triple usage by the end of the year.

Contemporary Analysis (CAN) President Nathan Watson spoke of investments in innovative automation in terms of his team’s transition to allremote work. CAN is characterized as a leader in the data science community in the Midwest.

Reportedly, CAN has provided support on the likes of data-driven decisionmaking, predictive analytics, AI, data science and machine learning with application development, business intelligence, data visualization and warehousing, and data engineering services since 2008.

“We have invested in tools that are collaborative, meaning they track and show all changes that everyone else has made,” Watson explained. “This has helped us co-work on projects, even when they aren’t even in the same time zone — without worry that we will undo or spend time on frivolous parts of a project.

“Nothing is worse than working on a part of a project only to find out your partner has also been working on the exact same thing.”

Big Breakthroughs, Big Opportunities

Keith Fix noted how his firm, Retail Aware, is now focused on helping brands and retailers to capture first data from product displays in stores. With offices in Omaha and Chicago, the firm aids the aforementioned stakeholders in measuring data around in-store displays to drive brands’ return on investment.

CEO Fix referred to a presentation by Chamath Palihapitiya, whereby the founder of Social Capital spoke at greater length about the importance of firstparty data and its evolution.

In a Twitter video posted in March, Palihapitiya discusses how, if one takes 1,000 of the same inputs and gives them to all of the “giants” — the Facebooks and Googles and so forth — all of these companies will come up with the same machine learning model.

“But, if you add one little ingredient that all of those other companies don’t have, your output can be markedly different,” he stated. “It’s like giving two great chefs three ingredients. But you give the third chef one extra one. That person has the ability to do something very special.”

Formerly, Fix highlighted automation and applied and generative AI when asked about general growth for Retail Aware, as well as broad trends in technology, speculating partly that “generative AI … may have its breakout year in 2023.”

“I’m finally starting to see it become commonplace in tools being built today,” he had remarked. “[Software as a service] tools without AI will feel like the pen and paper of yesteryear.”

In fact, Fix went so far as to classify applied and generative AI as among those major disruptive tech themes as we moved from 2022 into 2023. He described the former as the application of artificial intelligence to solve specific problems across the industry (for instance, powering the robots that bus tables in restaurants).

The latter generative AI was defined as the ability to use code to automatically generate content such as text, images and videos. Readers may be familiar with Jasper.AI, for instance, which Fix indicated has the potential to change the world of work by transforming today’s graphic artist into tomorrow’s “linguist typing into the system what image to generate.”

Fix remarked that his “predictions seem to be playing out.”

“A few other themes that have emerged since my prediction last year: The pace these generalist tools have been advancing has been at breakneck speed with the release of ChatGPT versions and Google Bard,” he noted. “We also saw corporates start to prohibit employees from using

these tools out of fears of proprietary data ending up being used to train models used by competitors.”

By way of Google, Bard is reportedly an “AI experiment” by the tech force. As Google puts it: “We’ve long seen the potential to make information and computing much more accessible through conversational AI. Two years ago, we unveiled LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications), a conversational AI model capable of fluid, multi-turn dialogue and, last year, we launched the AI Test Kitchen, a new space where people could learn about, get hands-on experience with, and provide feedback on LaMDA.”

Furthermore, it was noted that Bard “enables you to collaborate with generative AI.” The Bard was described as a “creative and helpful collaborator … whether you want to help planning the perfect birthday party and drafting the invitation, creating a pro & con list for a big decision, or understanding really complex topics simply.”

The machine learning model powering Bard reportedly reads trillions of words, picking up on the patterns that make up human language. So, it was characterized as “good at predicting what might be reasonable responses.”

“What I’ve been hearing,” Fix added, “is that many of these open-sourced LLMs (language learning models) are now just as good as ChatGPT/Bard and many companies are looking to build internally to prevent private data from being public.”

ONSLAUGHT OF OPPORTUNITIES ARISE TO HARNESS AI

Future-forward solutions

When surmising what’s ahead for small businesses, Bunting said AI will “continue to deliver the most benefit for businesses.”

He noted that as AI gets more user-friendly, more businesses will adopt the technology.

Bunting also predicts that the next big platform will be virtual reality.

“Currently, VR is mostly used by innovators however in the next two to five years VR will emerge as a viable technology platform,” he said. “Our team is currently working on solutions that use AI and VR.”

For those who may be considering new investments in technologies and/or updates to legacy systems, Bunting stressed that AI technology is not “one size fits all.”

“There is a spectrum of [artificial intelligence] that exists,” he said. “I think it’s best to analyze the problem and identify the right AI to deliver a benefit.”

“Sometimes,” he added, “the initial application of AI can be simple, then over time built upon to achieve higher intelligence and automation.”

Watson of CAN also provided his insights into best practices when

exploring tech-driven investments, either as updates or as completely new solutions.

“Beware the cost of implementation — even of small changes to legacy systems,” he stated. “It may seem like it’s just a piece of software, just a small change of process. But, many times, people’s livelihood — their quotas, pay and company value — are tied to these processes and how they are defined.”

Watson noted the importance of thinking about the implications of automating processes that change even the most seemingly small details. For instance, changing the way a business defines a customer could be detrimental.

“ … their bonuses could be hit, their job may become in question,” he explained. “Nothing is worse than a VP who didn’t hit their bonuses or a manager whose job is now half automated, because you changed the definition of a customer or automated a critical, human touchneeded process.”

“Communication to all who use the system or process,” he emphasized, “is very much needed.”

Affordable Housing

LEGACY OF REDLINING STUNTS HEALTHY GROWTH

Editor’s note: This is the first in a series of articles detailing affordable housing in the metro.

In the City of Omaha’s Housing Affordability Action Plan, two maps (pictured below) highlight the lasting effects of a practice outlawed decades ago: redlining.

“One of the city’s biggest challenges is the lasting impact these practices have had on residents. In areas of North and South Omaha, where redlining was a historic practice, homeownership rates are low and many renter households are cost-burdened,” the study notes.

If you haven’t heard the term “redlining,” Dr. Terri Crawford said you’re not alone.

Crawford is a community fellow for the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Service Learning Academy and an instructor for the Black Studies

course. She’s also on the governing board of the new documentary “Divisible” and provides in-depth tours of the “Undesign the Redline” exhibit at UNO.

“If you haven’t lived it, then you have no real reason to know that this is what happened and continues to happen,” she said.

A Brief History

Back-to-back crises in 1929 and 1930 set the stage for discriminatory policies.

In 1929 the stock market crashed, triggering an international crisis and causing bank failures across the board in 1930. By 1930 4 million Americans were jobless, increasing to 6 million in 1931.

Also in 1930, severe drought plagued the Midwest and the Great Plains followed by dust storms in 1931. Regular rainfall would not return until the end of 1939.

The national average income fell to less than half of what it had been and nearly 1 million Americans faced foreclosure on their homes by 1933.

A Discriminatory Solution

To combat the foreclosures, newly elected President Franklin D. Roosevelt released numerous “New Deal” acts, including the National Housing Act of 1934, which would provide federal loans to guarantee mortgages. However, only white Americans in historically white neighborhoods could receive loans.

‘Redlining’ refers to the literal red lines drawn by the Home Owner’s Loan Corporation (HOLC) and the Federal Home Loan Bank Board to block out neighborhoods that were predominantly Black, or had high concentrations of immigrants. These “Redlined” neighborhoods were classified as “hazardous risks.”

In Omaha, this included “Near North Side,” with Locust Street to the north and Cuming Street to the south, bordered by North 20th Street on the east and North 30th Street on the west.

In South Omaha, the redlined area included Q Street to the north and Harrison Street to the south, with part of south 36th Street to the west, and Kennedy Freeway to the east.

At the tail end of the Civil Rights Movement came the Fair Housing Act of 1968, which made redlining through federally funded programs illegal.

“However, that did not change the practice,” Crawford said. “It just morphed into other practices that had the same impact and that has never really changed for cities across America.”

Modern Implications

In 2019, the University of Richmond’s Digital Scholarship Lab partnered

with the National Community Reinvestment Coalition to digitize 200 HOLC grading maps from the 1930s.

Using data from the 2018 U.S. Census’s American Community Survey (ACS) and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s Social Vulnerability Index (SVI), the project shows the lasting socioeconomic impact of redlining.

Individuals who live in or around Near North Side have shorter life expectancies and have the highest percentages of kidney disease, obesity, pulmonary disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and asthma. Many of these conditions have formed as a result of barriers to access, whether it’s health care, education, or funds.

Crawford, a fifth-generation North Omahan, has first-hand experience with these factors.

“I was very young at the time, but I remember that bus services only ran to certain areas in the city, and then would turn around,” she said. “There was a lack of nutritious, healthy food that was affordable for families that lived in impacted areas.”

Nearly 44% of Near North Side residents live in poverty, and a majority are spending over 30% of their income on rent.

Kim Bradford said her family was the second Black family to move into the neighborhood around 16th and Pickney streets. Her family still lives in the home she was born in.

“Racism was very prevalent and impacted our housing stability and safety,” she said. “Some of the impacts included neighbors not being told of the hidden dangers such as lead from the battery plant.”

All of these factors restrict Black individuals and minorities from building generational wealth.

LEGACY OF REDLINING STUNTS HEALTHY GROWTH

Investing in Communities

As the Riverfront and the NoDo (North Downtown) District receive steep reinvestment, community members are worried gentrification will push out long-time North Omaha residents who are already cost-burdened.

One initiative aimed at helping long-time North and South Omaha residents is the Greenlining Fund. The fund, distributed by Front Porch Investments (FPI), was set at $1 million for the first round, which received 227 applications.

“The initial funding commitment will not serve everyone who was eligible,” said Naomi Hattaway, communications lead for FPI.

To help make funding decisions, FPI brought in community members from North and South Omaha to form the Community Advisor Committee. Bradford, along with 13 other committee members, selected 15 projects.

“Joining this committee has given me the opportunity to speak for people that may never be heard,” she said. “This committee is providing opportunities to enhance and encourage growth in our neighborhoods.”

The recipients will receive a 0% equity home loan to make home improvements they might not otherwise be able to afford, such as a new roof or making mobility modifications.

“An innovative and equitable practice embedded in the home equity loan approval is the policy of utilizing non-traditional credit and income verification,” said Meridith Dillion, who launched the pilot program before announcing her departure from the organization she helped found.

“Our lending partner is also using an automated valuation model for property values, instead of local appraisals, due to the documented bias and often harmful valuations from the industry.”

When loans are repaid they will be reinvested in Qualified Census Tracts of North and South Omaha.

Difficult Conversations

But, Crawford said there are more pieces to the puzzle.

“You can’t pay your way out of this problem,” she said. “This is embedded in who we are as Americans, in our policies, and how those policies continue to have a disparate impact on marginalized communities.”

Part of the work, arguably the most difficult part, is sharing information and having tough conversations surrounding racism.

“We always start with this conversation is not about guilt or blame; it’s about our collective history,” she said. “How can we come to a place where we can reconcile that history in order to reframe and reinvest into these places that have been historically disinvested in?

“Is it difficult? Absolutely. Is it a necessary conversation? Absolutely. You have to be courageous enough to admit that [systemic racism] continues to exist.”

One of the ways local advocates are approaching citizens is through the documentary “Divisible.” The first showing was at the Benson Theatre. The board chose Benson due to its inclusion in redlining, as well as current gentrification.

“It’s about honoring those who have been impacted, and then having a conversation with those that are now moving into these neighborhoods and changing the face of what it looks like,” she said.
