Yes, Yoshitomo is a restaurant. But it’s also a destination.
People fly to Omaha to specifically dine at David Utterback’s creative twist on sushi and its neighboring sushi counter/omakase table, Ota.
The James Beard Best Chef: Midwest finalist never had an interest in pursuing a career in the industry until after a few years of working jobs in kitchens.
“My first job in the industry was behind the register of a Burger King in the mid-90s,” Utterback recalled. “I kept yelling the orders into the microphone. So, they moved me from the registers to the floor, cleaning tables and refilling the straws and napkins all day. I didn’t last long.”
The following year, the then-16-year-old got his first cooking job as a short-order cook and dishwasher at a “greasy spoon” making liver and onions all summer.
“It was just another job in a long string of random jobs,” Utterback said of those early stints. “And I’d likely have gone back to school for the fifth time if I hadn’t taken my first solo trip to Japan and
managed to secure a reservation at a very highly regarded sushi counter named Sukiyabashi Jiro.”
In the chefs Utterback encountered his first real, high-level professionals in the industry.
“I decided during that dinner that I had found my calling and I’d make sushi professionally,” he said.
And it’s not sushi “as usual” for the Benson spot, which has been its home for seven years.
“When we first opened we looked like every other sushi restaurant,” Utterback explained. “But, within those first couple of years, we started to pivot into a more unique direction. Big turning points definitely were removing soy sauce from the tables and deciding not to offer fake wasabi; getting rid of the California roll; removing the refrigerated countertop fish cases; and putting the chefs on display.”
While these steps may seem small and inconsequential, he stated, “Each one of these changed the whole trajectory of the restaurant.”

he feared the potential backlash.
“I was afraid I’d ‘break’ the restaurant,” he said.
If anything, Utterback is contributing to breaking perceptions of Omaha’s culinary scene, as evidenced by the likes of The Washington Post’s December 2023 feature with the incredulous headline: “One of the America’s best sushi restaurants is in Omaha. Yes, Omaha.”
“While the world definitely has a perception of Omaha, those lowbar expectations make it easy to dunk on those preconceived ideas,” he stated.
The local community, Utterback added, tends to also consider experiences in larger cities as “world-class” and “inherently better,” discounting amazing restaurants in the market as “pretty good for Omaha” when they could out-class competition in larger markets.
“Like a restaurant in Chicago is just better because it’s Chicago,” he said. “We have to break out of that mindset, and I’ve come to learn over the years that we have an extremely adventurous market and one of the best restaurant scenes in the country. If you don’t think so, it’s because you are going to the wrong restaurants.”
Bold move, big payoff
Yoshitomo initially was built on a handful of credit cards at a former Subway store.
“We didn’t have money for anything and the decor and vibe really didn’t match the food we were trying to put out,” he explained. “I

came to realize partway through that process that our successes came through taking chances and becoming comfortable with ‘breaking’ the restaurant.”
Utterback indicated they were holding themselves back, refraining from bold decisions that would “never work” or that guests wouldn’t “get” mentally.
“’Yoshi 2.0’ was really about me just letting go of what I thought others wanted and just trusting that my palate and sensibilities
about every aspect of the restaurant will align with those whose tastes are similar,” he said. “We’ve become far more ambitious with dishes, products, music, design and experiences … The restaurant is 300% different from the one we opened and I’m already thinking about Yoshi 3.0.”
As an ingredient-based restaurant that prizes high-quality and rare items, Yoshitomo remained true to its heart by not offering products based on profitability even in the face of soaring food costs.
“We were severely underpriced before the pandemic and in a larger market like NYC or L.A., we could literally charge double or the serving size would be half as much,” Utterback noted. “Our biggest challenge has always been doing what we do, where we do it, and we often lose financially because we bring in big city items and serve them at midmarket prices.”
So, Yoshitomo’s prices may be a little more rightsized. But Utterback said they didn’t reduce the serving size.
“We actually increased it, just not proportionally,” he said.
Local ingredients and relationships include those with Jon’s Naturals for beef.
“The wagyu nigiri we serve is our No. 1 item sold in the restaurant and is a great example of the versatility of the cuisine,” Utterback remarked. “We sell as much steak as we do tuna.”
Until Utterback made his surprising mark on the sushi universe, there had never been a finalist for the venerable James Beard Best Chef distinction in the Midwest from any community outside of St. Louis, Kansas City, Madison and Minneapolis.
He hat-tipped recent finalist, Tim Nicholson of Omaha’s The Boiler Room, while saying the city is “finally getting the attention it deserves” and showing “we have something special going on here.”
“I hope it shows chefs locally that we can take chances and get noticed,” he said.
Because of Yoshitomo’s success, Utterback said people are now flying or stopping through Omaha specifically to dine at the restaurant or Ota counter.
“And the expectations they bring with them are quite high,” Utterback noted.
To date, the high-end Ota counter is Utterback’s proudest professional accomplishment “by far.”
“From that life-changing meal in Tokyo, it was my dream to improve my skills to have one of my own and to be able to build that dream here in my home is the execution of a goal 15 years in the making,” he said.
As an omakase table, Ota features an ever-changing menu based on seasonal availability as much as the “mood and whim” of the host.
“I encourage readers to get out of their comfort circle and try new things, especially local restaurants,” he said. “Large franchises and chains do little for our community and the dollars spent there are used to fund expansion into other communities and private interests.”

While the commercial real estate market has had undeniable challenges, summing up how the outgoing year fared for such a multifaceted industry is also highly nuanced. It depends at least partially on “where one looks” and the professional that one asks to glean such insights as 2024 draws to a close and 2025 draws near.
For Metonic Real Estate Solutions’ leadership, the Omaha market is demonstrating resilience amid macroeconomic pressures.
“There continues to be solid demand for well-located and high-quality rental housing,” said President Kassie Inness. “Additionally, the market has shown a growing need for new types of housing, including build-to-rent properties, as well as solutions to address the high barriers to homeownership.”
Senior Associate Investor Relations Rachel McCown referred to the expanding job market and population growth as driving housing demand.
“The Midwest’s multifamily sector has also attracted significant investor interest, thanks to the region’s favorable cap rates and comparatively affordable housing market,” she stated. “Furthermore, the Midwest’s solid demand coupled with less supply than other markets has made it a particularly attractive option for

Likewise, Inness alluded to rising borrowing costs, high materials costs, and labor shortages.
“Broader economic concerns, including inflation, the election year, and fluctuating interest rates, have affected both investor sentiment and tenant affordability,” she said. “A lack of incentives such as tax credits, Tax Increment Financing (TIF), and housing grants has further complicated the ability to offset rising interest and construction costs.”
McCown said transactional activity slightly decreased this year compared to the robust 2019 to 2022 timeframe, but “has not come to a halt.”
“Metonic successfully acquired or began construction on $100 million worth of real estate projects,” she said.
Kristi Andersen, vice president, advisory and transaction services at CBRE, summed up the CRE market as holding steady in 2024.
“Vacancy ticked up 20 basis points in the office market from one year ago, but is still a low and healthy 9.1%,” Andersen said. “New office leasing is approximately 87% of 2023 levels, however sublease space went down and average full-service rents rose 3%.”

While the industrial market loosened, Andersen indicated vacancy under 3% challenges tenants looking for a new space.
“Retail was a shining star in 2024,” she said. “Vacancy is down 50 basis points from one year ago and now stands at a low 5.9%. Average asking rents increased by $1.10 or 7.8% from last year on a triple net basis. New retail leasing is approximately 91.9% of 2023 levels.”
Andersen furthermore spotlighted how Omaha’s conservative business community tends to not over-build.
“When uncertainty appeared in the office market related to post-COVID office attendance, the building of new speculative properties slowed, which kept vacancy and available sublease space low relative to other markets,” she said.
Citing a CBRE survey of business leaders, Andersen said most companies have settled on attendance policies and are resuming space-need decisions.
“Similarly, when e-commerce trends appeared long before COVID on the retail landscape, the building of large shopping centers ceased in the local market,” she recalled. “New construction of retail space is mostly found in smaller strip centers near new residential developments. After COVID, the industrial market grew dramatically in 2022 due to an acceleration of e-commerce and the need for more warehouse space. As that need has leveled out, the market responded with less construction, keeping vacancy below 3%.”
General uncertainty due to interest rates, construction costs, and politics was identified as one of the headwinds — factors that put many business leaders in a holding pattern.
Like most markets, office space continues to recover. Andersen noted that although vacancy is 70 basis points higher than five years ago, Omaha’s office vacancy is nearly half the national average.
Industrial vacancy sits at 20 basis points lower, with average asking rents at $1.25 per square foot — or 20.3% higher than five years ago.
“Over 9 million square feet of new industrial space has been added to the Omaha market since 2020,” she said. “The retail market is as strong as it’s been in years. Vacancy is 160 basis points lower and average asking rents are 28% higher than they were 5 years ago.”
No place like home
As Alex Epstein, executive vice president at OMNE Partners reflected on the past year, Omaha has stayed strong compared to peer cities.
“… we don’t have the delinquency and vacancy issues in the office market other major MSA markets are experiencing,” Epstein said. “This is a testament
to Omaha’s companies being strong, rooted in ‘come to the office’ cultures and strong, steady professional service companies that are stable operations.”
While downsizing of medical staffing firms slightly affected markets, Epstein said many groups are looking to absorb Class A West Dodge Road vacancies.

Kiewit Foundation announcing to spend $480 million by 2030,” he said. “Omaha is fortunate for projects like Omaha Public Library on 72nd and Dodge that continue to positively change Omaha’s landscape and when you build arts, education and community developments — people, office and retail follows the traffic.”
Conversely, Epstein stated that interest rates make it difficult to plan new construction for profitable developments because the rent structure must be significantly higher for deals.
“Investment sales activity and interest were certainly down and the biggest factor is sellers want premium pricing and buyers can only pay with what debt markets allow, which is a big discount from where things were in 2021,” he said.
Epstein noted in some ways, 2018 to 2022 could be considered “parabolic years” for activity and development across all real estate sectors.
“2023 and 2024 may be just getting adjusted to what was considered a normal amount of activity for Omaha,” he stated.
As Regi Powell, commercial sales director and Realtor with PJ Morgan Real Estate surveys the 2024 CRE landscape, he too alluded to how higher interest rates and construction costs make it hard for financials to work on many deals, placing pressure on sales and leasing.
“The Fed easing interest rates at the end of 2024, with more expected easing in 2025, should help the entire market,” Powell said of areas of promise. “Also, we’ve seen some businesses close recently, specifically in the restaurant sector, but the vacated spaces have been released quickly, which a positive sign for the retail landscape.”
Powell also referenced a persistent lack of available inventory, as well as an office market with vacancy rates that are “higher than the historical norm.”
“2024 was still a below-average year in most sectors in terms of both sales/leasing transactions and volume – though we are heading the right direction,” he stated
“I know how you feel about all this Christmas business, getting depressed and all that. It happens to me every year. I never get what I really want. I always get a ton of stupid toys or a bicycle, or clothes, or something like that.
What I really want is real estate”
Omaha is fortunate for projects like Omaha Public Library on 72nd and Dodge that continue to positively change Omaha’s landscape and when you build arts, education and community developments — people, office and retail follows the traffic.
“There is also hope for improved interest rates in the near future, alongside Omaha’s favorable economic forecast and robust economy,” she said.
Leadership also highlighted adaptation and milestones embodied partly by its groundbreaking of Ravello Homes, a build-to-rent community in Elkhorn, and the completion of the “apartminium” portfolio, including Allora and Capriana in Gretna and Elkhorn.
For 2025, Andersen expects Class A properties with good amenities to continue to out-perform Class B and C assets as companies settle into their office attendance policies and a new normal.
“As Omaha grows, retail will stay strong and Class A spaces in desirable locations will continue to lease quickly,” she said. “While online shopping prompts smaller footprints, I don’t see brick and mortar locations going away.”
If interest rates continue to drop, Epstein anticipated an uptick in activity and optimism around doing projects in the new year. He also noted how, when things got

slow this year, the team conducted broker opinion of values for clients to see what their property values are worth in today’s climate due to changes in interest/cap rates.
“We worked hard to provide our clients with comps of what was being sold and how their asset would be valued in today’s climate, especially in the multi-family markets we are able to leverage Seldin’s data from over 20,000 managed multi-family units to help our clients understand where costs are increasing and why on their assets,” he said.
Powell is optimistic 2025 will be a better year on the sales side, with consistent leasing.
“As interest rates normalize and inflation comes down, businesses should thrive, which helps the CRE market,” he said.
To stay ahead of the curve, Powell’s team is keeping up with local and national market trends.
“As the landscape of businesses shifts, the commercial real estate market has to adapt,” he said.
2024 CRE Projects to take note of
The 44-story tower will have 800,000 square feet of office space and 2,200
Heartwood Preserve
500-acre mixed-use development near 144th Street and West Dodge Road. It is to include Class A office spaces, four-star hotels, multifamily residences and a blend of local premium and national-caliber retailers and restaurants on The Row at Heartwood Preserve. The Heartwood project broke ground in September 2019.
The Duo Omaha
NuStyle Development is converting the Central Park Plaza twin towers downtown into 700 apartments, renaming the project as “The Duo Omaha.” The $163 million project will renovate the buildings in three phases with final completion occurring in 2027.
Google Data Center
At Blair High Rad and State Street, the Google is building a 2.2 millionsquare-foot data center.
According to news reports, the 2024 capital investment makes for a total so far of about $4.4 billion in Nebraska data centers to help meet growing demand for Google Cloud, artificial intelligence innovations and services such as the company’s search, maps and workspace programs.
Crossroads Redevelopment
Utah-based Woodbury Corp. will begin construction on the approximately $900 million project in a few months. The first phase of the project will include a 92,000-square-foot entertainment complex and a 40,000-square-foot center outdoor plaza surrounded by retail and office space; and a residential building with ground-floor retail.

SHAPING THE NEXT GENERATION OF VETERINARY CARE
Growing up in Nebraska and moving to Kansas during high school, Joanne “Joey” Gains followed a natural path to Kansas State University for veterinary school. After graduating in 1999, she and her husband chose Omaha as their home, drawn by family ties and a sense of opportunity.
Further growing her practice, she took on another opportunity, forming Omaha Veterinary Group (OVG), a network of six clinics. Gaines, a doctor of veterinary medicine, is now chief veterinary officer of the network.
Becoming a veterinarian was a lifelong dream.
“I always wanted to be a vet,” she said. “I think when I was three, I declared it, and it never changed.”
The adventure began in 2001 with the opening of Gaines’ own clinic, Ridgeview Animal Hospital, a small 800-square-foot office in a developing area of Omaha that seemed, at the time, too far away from mainstream Omaha at 180th Street and West Center Road.
“Everyone thought we were a little crazy to go that far out,” she explained.
Today, Ridgeview occupies four full bays in the same strip mall, a testament to the rapid growth of both the clinic and the city.
Growing a culture
From those humble beginnings, Gaines’ operation has grown after 23 years into a network of six clinics, with two more set to open soon. Each clinic represents a unique chapter in the story and Gaines is a partner in all of them.
Five of the clinics were built from the ground up, including Ridgeview Animal Hospital in Omaha, Walnut Creek Veterinary Clinic in Papillion, Skyline Veterinary Clinic and Coventry Veterinary Clinic Elkhorn. The Ridge and Cottner Creek Pet Clinic were both acquired and in partnership with Michael Siggers
Gaines said OVG is open to merging or partnering with other clinics in town, but they must be the right fit, culture and medicine.
“It’s so important to not dilute what we do,” Gaines stressed. “It has to be the right beliefs and philosophies about what you’re doing. It’s huge, especially when you are taking care of living beings.”
A focus on shared values — compassion, integrity, family, progressiveness and teamwork — has guided the growth of OVG.
“All of our staff can tell you what our values are because we truly believe in them,” Gaines said. “So that’s my expectation is when clients come in that they feel the compassion and they know we’re going to practice progressive medicine and surgery and, they feel like it’s a family environment.
“It’s really that teamwork and that relationship with the clients that we like to build,” Gaines said. “We are not a high volume, get people in, get people out clinic. None of our vets would want that ever.”
Shannon Laux, now OVG director of personnel and operations, started out with Gaines in the original clinic and echoed the alignment with the core values and culture.
“I’m extremely proud of our culture,” Laux said. “Its something that stands out in the veterinary industry, so we are passionate about maintaining it.”

The hallmark of OVG is its collaborative approach. The group holds weekly virtual meetings where its 19 veterinarians discuss cases, share medical advancements and streamline operations. Each clinic also conducts its own weekly team meetings.
“I think that’s one of the secret sauces,” Gaines said. “We’ve grown into it and developed. We’re unique, probably worldwide in how we have grown as a network here with all six clinics and how we work together.”
Innovation and collaboration
This collaborative spirit extends to specialization. OVG vets pursue advanced training in areas enabling the network to offer a wide range of services without referring clients to external providers. She explained that a lot is driven by doctors wanting to always be on top of the next thing and “push to always be better and improve and be on top of new things and offer what we can.”
With the rising number of pet owners, research shows an increased demand for pet welfare requiring a greater need for these highly trained and specialized veterinarians in various disciplines.
“We have one doctor who does endoscopy and she’s the only one in our group who does it,” Gaines said. “So, all six clinics send to her. We have one doctor who does acupuncture. One doctor does TPLOs, which is knee surgery.”
With the use of Microsoft Teams and a doctor’s channel, challenging cases and opportunities to try new procedures and treatments are shared. In addition, access to the network medical records further enhances this continuity of care.
“I can offer [specialized services] to my clients without scrambling to find who’s available, where its available, or how much is it going to cost somewhere else,” Gaines said.
According to research from the American Profession Guide, veterinary medicine provides an important role in safeguarding animal health and even human well-being along with playing a critical role in global health and the economy. It cites everything from advancements in telemedicine for pets, cuttingedge technologies in diagnostics and treatment, to artificial intelligence using more sophisticated and accurate equipment.
Keeping up with innovation and the latest equipment and knowledge is essential. The research shows that artificial intelligence and machine learning hold promise for enhanced diagnostics, predicting diseases and improving treatments. Gaines said AI can now read radiographs and X-rays, but there are limitations. That is why OVG still has board-certified radiologists as a part of its team. AI is useful for record-keeping and “has been one of the best additions for the quality of life and efficiency for doctors,” she emphasized.
In addition, there is a greater need for animal welfare awareness. OVG partners with community organizations such as Hands, Hearts and Paws, Heartland German Shepherd Rescue, Little White Dog Rescue and Muddy Paws Second Chance Rescue.
“Our clinics do a ton of rescue work,” Gaines said. “Most of our vets and staff end up with rescue dogs somewhere along the line.”
Gaines credits much of OVG’s success to her team, including her husband, Adam Gaines, who joined the business in 2005. With a background in business,

he serves as the regional director of operations, managing the logistics of the expanding network. Gaines now has the extra time she needs to manage the doctors.
“We have an awesome team of administrators,” Adam Gaines said, adding that sourcing skilled technical staff is a big, yet rewarding challenge, along with managing overall growth in the region.
In 2023, OVG launched an urgent care service addressing a critical need for afterhours care. Ridgeview Animal Hospital is now open Monday through Thursday until 9 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
“Our Google reviews tell the story of our clients or new clients who were able to get same day care, even if it isn’t their regular vet’s office,” he said.
“When clients have to go in on a Sunday, that’s stressful enough but then just to have it be a comfortable setting for them it helps,” Gaines added.

“We get to be more preventative and proactive in our care because people don’t wait 24 to 48 hours to see if it’s an issue,” Gaines said. “We get ahead of it a lot faster.”
Looking ahead
Coventry, headed by Mckenzie Riesselman, opened in July 2023. OVG is currently preparing to open two new clinics in Nebraska, Valley Animal Hospital and Aspen Creek Veterinary Clinic in Gretna. Gaines said these new locations represent the “next generation of veterinarians,” as they will be headed by younger vets, many who have joined straight out of veterinary school.
The Valley location is slated to open in March and will be home to Rachael Miller. Shelby Crowley will run the Gretna location next to the new Hy-Vee. Adam Gaines said they anticipate opening in May 2025.
“Those three vets are all in the same vet school class,” Dr. Gaines said. “They all went to Iowa State together graduating in 2019. None of that was intentional, it’s just how things ended up.”
Gaines said that while the new locations give the veterinarians a chance to pick the floor, counter and wall styles, they are also “growing the culture there and setting the standards, while still being a part of the network.”
“It’s a big thing to be a solo vet in practice and be in charge of the staff, medical and surgical care,” Gaines said. “It takes special people to take that leap and do it. I’m excited for all three of those vets.”
“The opportunities have been endless as the clinic grew,” Laux said, who started out as a technician 23 years ago. “I’m excited to see what’s ahead for our entire OVG team as we continue to grow.”
Despite the growth and innovation, Gaines is deeply connected to her original passion: treating animals and building relationships with their owners. Though retirement may eventually come for her, it’s clear she’s in no rush.
“It’s so rewarding,” Gaines said. “Every day is different and there’s always something new to learn, see and share. I just like what we’ve built.”

Artificial Intelligence is Accelerating the Digital Economy
At HFS, we continue to believe that artificial intelligence (AI) will prove to be one of the greatest technological innovations in modern history. At some point, we think that it will be inconceivable for future generations to believe that humans spent time working on computers instead of computers working for humans. Today, we have a digital economy along with digital currencies. Now, we are adding digital workers, which are better known as AI agents. This idea has meaningful ramifications for existing growth trends, whether that’s e-commerce, digital advertising, software-as-a-service, and cloud computing, to name a few.
Despite having been around for over 20 years, the adoption of these trends remains fairly tempered. For example, e-commerce is estimated to only represent about 22% of US retail sales (Digital Commerce 360). Digital advertising is around 60% of global advertising spend (OnAudience). Cloud computing is shown to only be about 50% penetrated (Gartner). However, AI is becoming a meaningful accelerant towards growing this digital economy.
Let’s consider how AI reinvigorated growth of cloud computing. Back in 2022, spending on this area of technology began to slow meaningfully. Cloud computing wasn’t declining, but it appeared that the days of 30% growth rates had passed as firms cut expenses and headcount. Many investors were pondering whether the cloud computing market was nearing maturity. Then the narrative began to change in 2023 due to AI. Not only was AI expensive and cost prohibitive for smaller firms to buy directly, but it was also hard to find supply. Cloud computing democratized access to AI chips through a subscription agreement and helped reaccelerate industry growth, which is a rare occurrence for a market of this size.
HFS believes we remain in the early innings of the AI revolution. While some will fixate on a handful of beneficiaries, the history of the technology industry shows how such transformations tend to fuel secondary effects. The emergence of the internet in the 1990s helped reinvigorate growth in the personal computer and semiconductor industry. The introduction of the iPhone helped form the “app” economy and fuel digital commerce, which shifted even more ad dollars online. We’re just starting to see the initial impact of AI and what it means for various firms and industries.
We think many occupations will prove to be beneficiaries. Some won’t. It will be fascinating to see how making computers work for us instead of the other way around will change our society. However, understand that the buildout phase of major technology transformations is usually the beginning – not the end.

Ennis Anderson joined the Laurtizen Gardens as its CEO on May 1, 2024. Before he joined Laurtizen Gardens he was senior vice president of guest services and operations for the Fort Worth Botanic Gardens in Texas. He previously served as senior vice president of operations, and chief financial officer during his time at Fort Worth. He is currently on the executive board of the American Public Garden Association.
You were previously senior vice president of guest services and operations for Fort Worth Botanic Garden. What excited you about the opportunity to become the next CEO of Lauritzen Gardens?
I really wanted to be at a growing garden in a growing city. Eight-plus years ago, Fort Worth was the 17th fastest, largest growing city, and now it’s 12th. Omaha is 15th. Omaha always ranks in the top rate for places to raise a small family. So that was important as well. But it’s the garden itself. It’s a place where I really see my girls being able to grow up in the garden. And, we have a lot of transformational projects that will really put the garden on the map fairly quickly.
As a leader, what is the most important thing to remember?
One of the things I tell the team all the time is that the staff is the treasure; that is our unique finite resource, the individuals that come together that make the organization great. So it’s always important to remember to protect the treasure.
What is something that you’re really proud of accomplishing?
When I was working with the Fort Worth Botanic Gardens I led the gardens through a series of transitions, and the last transition was going from a municipal garden to a private-partnership garden. I was the first employee to transition and I worked with the city and the nonprofit to pave the way for the other employees to merge successfully.

If you could give your younger self one piece of advice, what would it be?
Do what you love. I managed hotels for 15 years, and it’s a great place to work but there’s a lot of pressure and you’re working six days, 14 hours a day. I was talking to my mom, and she was talking about how she went through something very similar. She went from public accounting to the criminal justice field because that’s where her passion was. I had always loved nature, and with public gardens, you get to share that love with others.

What is one project you’re excited about?
One of the projects that we’re working on is the plants that we have in the conservatory. We’ve worked with some designers and landscape architects to define 10 different places around the world, like Italy or Madagascar, that we can have plants from displayed.

The Metropolitan Community College Business Division received a $5,000 grant awarded by the National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship (NACCE) that will support the College’s small business development offerings. Through the NACCE Everyday Entrepreneur Program and Fund, MCC students enrolled in the College’s entrepreneurship certification program will have the opportunity to pitch their business concept at the end of the spring quarter. The student with the winning presentation will be awarded seed funding made possible through the grant to support the launch of their small business.
Marla Ashe, MCC Dean of Business who holds a Doctorate in Business Administration, shared her enthusiasm for the first-time award from NACCE, emphasizing its vital role in supporting MCC student entrepreneurs. The MCC Entrepreneurship program curriculum is revamped for the 2025 spring quarter with an interdisciplinary focus. Students enrolled in MCC Skilled Trades and Technical Sciences, Arts and Information Technology programs who are interested in starting their own business can enroll in the College’s 10-week program to earn an Entrepreneurship Generalist Certificate of Achievement to develop the relevant business skills to start successful companies.
In addition to access to critical early-stage funding, the business pitch competition provides students with real-world experience presenting their ideas to potential investors, Ashe noted. Supporting entrepreneurship is vital for communities, particularly in Nebraska. According to data from the U.S. Small Business Administration Office of Advocacy in 2022, greater than 99% of all businesses in the state are small businesses, which account for 48% of total employment in Nebraska. Notably, the construction industry is the state’s largest small business employer.
“When small businesses succeed, our communities succeed. This funding from NACCE brings a unique opportunity and valuable educational experience to MCC student entrepreneurs,” said Ashe, who joined MCC in 2024. “We’re grateful for NACCE’s support and excited to offer a small business development program that aligns with MCC academic focus areas that are hotbeds for entrepreneurship.”
Rebecca Corbin, NACCE president and CEO, said community colleges play an important role in the economic development of the communities they serve.
“NACCE is proud to recognize Metropolitan Community College and the MCC Business Division for their commitment to developing and expanding the Everyday Entrepreneur (EE) program,” Corbin said. “Thanks to the generosity of EE’s founders, NACCE is able to make investments in colleges across the country that are transforming communities by fostering prosperity through the creation of scalable businesses.
