HIGHLIGHT of the week

Midwest Women Entrepreneurs Collective LAUNCHES

TO EMPOWER WOMEN IN BUSINESS

The Midwest Women Entrepreneurs Collective officially launched Feb. 19, aiming to support, connect and empower women entrepreneurs across the Midwest. The nonprofit, founded by Pamela Finn, provides educational resources, networking opportunities and mentorship to help women succeed in business.

MWEC’s kickoff event at the Carson Wealth building in Omaha attracted a full house of attendees seeking to network and learn. The initiative is timely, as the U.S. Small Business Administration reports over 65,000 businesses in Nebraska and 99,000 in Iowa are owned by women. The initial spark for MWEC came after Finn became an ambassador for

Wendy Diamond’s global Women’s Entrepreneurship Day Organization (WEDO). Finn collaborated with Nebraska business leaders, including Nebraska Startup Academy Director of Entrepreneurship Alyssa Cave, work that led Gov. Jim Pillen to proclaim Nov. 19 as Women’s Entrepreneurial Day in the state of Nebraska. Building on that success, Finn saw the need for organizing a group to provide opportunities for the benefit of women entrepreneurs. Membership in MWEC is free, and future meetings will include content on financial literacy education, technology resources, investment opportunities and mentorship meetups. Entrepreneurial women in all market segments and walks of life are invited to learn more at mwe-collective.org.

TOP 5 THINGS TO KNOW

Pillen backs merger

Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen is pushing for a merger of the Department of Natural Resources with the Department of Environment and Energy as a means of preserving water quality and boosting efficiencies in state government.

The governor joined Tim McCoy, director of the Game & Parks Commission in testifying before the Unicameral’s Natural Resources Committee on Feb. 13 in favor of LB317, which state Sen. Tom Brandt (Dist. 32) introduced at the governor’s request. If approved, the new entity would be known as the Department of Water, Energy and Environment.

“By combining the agencies’ efforts, the state will improve its focus on challenging longterm water and natural resource management issues such as nitrogen management, water utilization and soil health,” Pillen said. “The merging of the two departments is expected to allow customers, who currently work with both DNR and DEE separately, the ability to streamline their planning and permitting efforts by working with a single department.”

TikTok banned in Iowa

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds has banned state agencies from using apps of the Chinese artificial intelligence company DeepSeek and other Chinese social media platforms, reports KCRG TV in Cedar Rapids. This is the second time the state has tangled with the issue, banning TikTok on all state-owned devices in 2022.

Corridor Business Journal reported in 2023 that Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird joined 46 states in requesting TikTok Inc. fully comply with a multistate investigation into whether the company violated consumer protection laws.

Reynolds’ move catches the state up to Nebraska, where TikTok has been banned on state-owned devices since 2020.

Chamber makes awards

The Greater Omaha Chamber celebrated individuals and companies during its 2025 Annual Meeting earlier this month. The awards recognize local business leaders, volunteers and changemakers “who embody the spirit of community and collaboration that defines the Omaha business community” the chamber said via a release.

Dana Bradford, CEO and majority owner of C3 Brands and Sherman P. Willis, State Farm Insurance agent and instructor at Metropolitan Community College and Creighton University School of Law each received the Chair’s Dedicated Service Award. Named Headliner of the Year was The Joslyn; North End Teleservices was recognized as Talent Innovator of the Year and the Greater Omaha Chamber’s Young Professional Leadership Committee was named Volunteer of the Year.

Midlands losing Joann stores

Following the January announcement by fabric and craft chain Joann that it would be entering bankruptcy for the second time in less than a year, the company said on Feb. 14 it would close more than half of its roughly 850 retail locations in the U.S. About 500 stores are set to close, affecting 49 states, including in the Midlands.

Per USA Today, Iowa loses six stores in Ames, Ankeny, Iowa City, Muscatine, Mason City and Council Bluffs. Nebraska loses one store in Bellevue. Nationally, California is hit hardest, losing 61 stores, followed by Florida (36) and Michigan (33).

Omaha, Gutman among tourism honorees

Closing its 2025 Nebraska Tourism Conference, Visit Nebraska awarded several businesses and organizations for contributions to the state’s tourism industry. The awards were presented in Lincoln on Feb. 13.

Honorees included Vic Gutman of Vic Gutman & Associates in Omaha. Gutman founded the Omaha Summer Arts Festival in 1975, helped establish the Omaha Farmers Market, and played a pivotal role in major events including Omaha’s 150th Birthday Celebration and the Millennium Lights Celebration.

Visit Omaha was awarded Outstanding Marketing Campaign for “What Kind of Traveler Are You?” The campaign focuses on curated travel itineraries based on traveler personas and has generated more than 7 million impressions and 5 million video views. Other award winners included:

• Outstanding Tourism Attraction: Norfolk Riverfront

• Outstanding Event, Communities over 10,000 people: Zoo Lights Powered by LES, Lincoln Children’s Zoo

• Outstanding Event, Communities under 10,000 people: Gravel National Championship, Scottsbluff/Gering Sports Council

A who’s who of Nebraska business was on hand Jan. 30 to usher five outstanding leaders into the Nebraska Business Hall of Fame, presented by the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce & Industry and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Business.

The newest inductees join an elite group of over 140 Nebraska business leaders in the hall, recognized for their impact on the state’s economy, driving its competitiveness, and contributing significantly to the vitality of free enterprise.

This year’s honorees include Mike Boyle of Kawasaki in Lincoln; Paul and Lori Hogan of Home Instead in Omaha; state Sen. John Stinner of Western States Bank in Gering and state Sen. Matt Williams of Flatwater Bank in Gothenburg.

“The Nebraska Business Hall of Fame is the highest honor a business leader can receive in our state,” said NE Chamber president Bryan Slone during his remarks at the awards banquet. “These five Nebraskans have contributed greatly to the success and growth of Nebraska, making them among the most deserving.”

These five Nebraskans have contributed greatly to the success and growth of Nebraska, making them among the most deserving.

- BRYAN SLONE, PRESIDENT, NE CHAMBER

Mike Boyle joined Kawasaki Motors Manufacturing Corp., U.S.A. after earning his degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Nebraska. Starting as a process engineer, he helped design robot welding cells and automation systems, new composite molding and joining processes, and was instrumental in bringing new Jetski personal watercraft and motorcycles into production.

Promoted to engineering manager, a role which oversaw all engineering at the Lincoln plant, he’s also served managerial roles over production, quality, information technology and continuous improvement departments.

Boyle was named vice president in 2007, overseeing operations at Kawasaki’s Lincoln plant and was promoted to senior vice president and chief operating officer in 2017, responsible for operations in Lincoln as well

as engine manufacturing plants in Maryville and Boonville, Missouri. In January 2022, he was selected as president and CEO, the first non-Japanese president in the history of Kawasaki’s global operations.

“My selection is really based on the success of our company,” Boyle told the Midlands Business Journal. “We just celebrated our 50th anniversary this past year. We’ve done a lot, we’ve made a lot of investment in the state, we’ve grown significantly and we’re now probably one of the larger manufacturers in Nebraska. I just take my selection as being kind of the figurehead that represents our company.”

In addition to his professional responsibilities, Boyle is active on several boards and industry groups. He and wife Pam live in Lincoln, where they raised their family.

SEN. JOHN STINNER, INDUCTEE, NEBRASKA BUSINESS HALL OF FAME

Sen. John Stinner, Western States Bank, Gering

A member of the Cornhuskers’ 1970 and 1971 National Championship football teams, Pennsylvania native John Stinner graduated from UNL with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1973 and a master’s in economics in 1975. He began his career in public accounting and, after moving to western Nebraska, joined a group of investors who opened a bank on 10th Street in Gering.

That bank, which would become Western States Bank, grew organically and by acquisition into a major employer in Scotts Bluff County and the surrounding region with more than a dozen locations in Nebraska and the Front Range of Colorado. From 2013 to 2014, Stinner served as chairman of the Nebraska Bankers Association.

A Republican, Stinner was elected state senator representing District 48 in 2014 and left the Unicameral in 2023. Starting in 2017, he chaired the state Appropriations Committee and also sat on the Natural Resources and Nebraska Retirement Systems committees during his legislative tenure.

“I guess the legacy is that I did the best I could,” Stinner said in his acceptance video. “Hopefully I did some good and some long-term good, certainly from the legislative side, but also from the community side as well. To me, it’s been a wonderful journey, a wonderful ride.”

SEN. MATT WILLIAMS, INDUCTEE, NEBRASKA BUSINESS HALL OF FAME

Sen. Matt Williams, Flatwater Bank, Gothenburg

Born and raised in Gothenburg, Matt Williams has built an enviable career in business and public service spanning more than five decades. His family made their name in banking and ranching by the time he graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, which he attended on an athletic scholarship. He returned to his hometown after earning a degree in business administration and his law degree.

“I would tell you, I have grown up with a set of core values that have guided me all my life,” Williams said in his acceptance remarks. “Recognize the importance of people in your success, conducting yourself with a sense of responsibility and striving to reach your potential. And I will tell you, every opportunity that I have had ... is because I’ve had a whole group of people supporting me.”

Working for the family’s Flatwater Bank, of which he remains chairman, Williams grew the enterprise on the belief a strong banking environment was essential for the survival of rural Nebraska. During the 1990s and early 2000s,

he became involved with the Nebraska Bankers Association and the American Bankers Association, ultimately serving as chairman of both.

Representing District 36, Williams served in the Nebraska legislature from 2015 to 2023 during which time he served on the Banking, Commerce and Insurance Committee, which he chaired, and the Health and Human Services Committee.

His legislative prowess earned him the 2022 Friend of Education award from the School Administrators Association for introducing and passing legislation to make schools safer via the Safe2Help call line. During his eight-year legislative career the Republican introduced 63 bills, 58 of which became law.

Among his board service, Williams chairs the Board of Directors of Nebraska Innovation Campus and is a Governor of the Board of the Aksarben Foundation, among others. His many awards include ABA Ag Banker of the Year and Diplomat of the Year. He and his wife, Susan, have two children and six grandchildren.

NEBRASKA tech Tech Nebraska

ANNOUNCES ADVISORY BOARD, EXPANDS LEADERSHIP

I strongly believe there are a lot of folks who are working in silos throughout the state, and I think sharing that expertise broadly can really help position tech as a key cornerstone of what Nebraska does essentially and exceptionally well.
- LAUREL OETKEN, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, TECH NEBRASKA

Nebraska’s first technology trade association, Tech Nebraska, has expanded its reach and expertise with the announcement of its Advisory Board members. The body is made up of more than 20 leaders in the business community who will assist and advise the organization on fulfilling its mission to advance the technology ecosystem of the state.

Laurel Oetken, executive director, said the body reflects the many facets of technology at work in the business community. She said equal consideration was given to startups and tech-forward companies as to manufacturing, health care and other industries leveraging technology for greater efficiency and productivity.

“In today’s world, every company is a tech company,” she said. “That includes emerging technology startups, the small one- to two-person team that is maybe building an app or developing software, up to the Kiewits of the world or Olssen or some of those big companies that do work every day in a more traditional industry who have invested a significant amount of their work and workforce to help establish a really strong technology ecosystem within their organizations.

“There are a lot of companies that we wouldn’t think of in tech

specifically in that manufacturing sector that have really started to put an emphasis on automation. I strongly believe that that’s the next generation of where tech is going and evolving. Looking at the ag sector too, it is very rare today you don’t see a farm operation that has a large scale of technology.”

Advisory Board sets course

The new advisory board will play a pivotal role in shaping the organization’s strategic direction and policy priorities, Oetken said, providing expert insight, identifying emerging industry trends and strengthening connections within Nebraska’s tech community.

“This group in general, and especially the folks that we have on the advisory board today, are really going to steer the organization in the direction that it should go over the next, two to five to 10 years,” she said. “They will really be that sounding board but also the backbone of direction-setting and using their influence and general authority on tech-related issues to help us pinpoint where we want to go as an organization and who else we want to be involved.”

Those efforts will be leveraged across Tech Nebraska’s wide-

I think we’re going to continue to see the trend in states like Nebraska and just generally in the Midwest, that there’s going to be more and more legislation introduced that touches the technology sector
- LAUREL OETKEN, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, TECH NEBRASKA

ranging battery of priorities, a smattering of which includes improving tech education, providing guidance and support to entrepreneurs, helping to enhance tech ecosystem and infrastructure and advocating in matters of public policy.

“As a tech trade association, we are aiming to convene technology partners to foster a very inclusive and diverse technology workforce spanning the full state of Nebraska,” Oetken said. “One of the bigger things for us as an organization is engaging in the policy and advocacy space on tech-related initiatives, and that could be at the local, state or federal level, on any pro-growth, pro-technology-focused policy work that we can do.

“We were supported early on by some of the tech leaders who are actually on our advisory board and my executive committee today, who came together to really position Nebraska as a technology leader and put the flag out there that we can be a leader, especially in the Midwest, but also nationally.”

Looking ahead

The organization was founded in 2023 in partnership with the NE Chamber. The new advisory board will play a key role in getting the fledgling group’s agenda and programming off the ground, Oetken said.

“One of the bigger goals for us as an organization is really to connect and convene technology leaders across the state,” she said. “Throughout the course of the next year, we will have several networking events and opportunities for folks to come together in small group settings to provide that layer of connectivity.”

The advisory board has already played a role in identifying the organization’s legislative agenda as it applies to the current session of the Nebraska Unicameral.

“We’re in the mix of the legislative session, even comparatively from last year to this year,” Oetken said. “We had maybe four or five bills that we were tracking in 2024 that were tech related, today it’s 20 to 25. We’ve started to form what we’re calling a technology caucus for this session to gauge the interest of policy makers and also identify some of the key areas where we can help educate, inform and just provide additional resources or bring in subject matter experts to speak on some of those topics.

“I think we’re going to continue to see the trend in states like Nebraska and just generally in the Midwest, that there’s going to be more and more legislation introduced that touches the technology sector. For us, that provides a really unique opportunity to engage subject matter experts in how we advance technology and educate lawmakers on topics like AI or cybersecurity.”

Asked what she is most excited about regarding the new advisory body, Oetken said giving experts the ability to establish common points of dialogue and expertise will pay great dividends for Nebraska’s tech industry specifically as well as the state’s business community as a whole.

Cass County NEDC

ANNUAL MEETING LISTS HIGHLIGHTS, LOOKS TO THE FUTURE

We set out in 2024 to get prepared for Cass County’s next phase of growth. It was a year well-spent on organizing and collaborating.
- JOSH CHARVAT, CCNEDC EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

At its Feb. 13 annual meeting, the Cass County Nebraska Economic Development Council reflected on numerous accomplishments over the past year and looked to continue that momentum into 2025. The event was attended by community leaders, business owners, and various stakeholders of Cass County.

“We set out in 2024 to get prepared for Cass County’s next phase of growth. It was a year well-spent on organizing and collaborating,” said Josh Charvat, CCNEDC executive director. “As Cass County continues to grow and we begin to see accelerated growth in our residential and industrial sectors, it will be because of the work that was done this past year.”

Charvat noted the achievements of 2024 included completion of Cass County’s first-ever countywide housing study, which identified a need for 615 new housing units over the next five years, and the identification of two new development sites totaling 110 acres.

The study revealed key challenges such as affordability, aging infrastructure and utility constraints while also highlighting opportunities including steady population growth and employer demand. Single family residential building permits saw a slight increase in 2024 but remained below demand, while commercial permit valuations returned to more typical levels following a record year in 2023.

Key initiatives for the coming year include water and wastewater analysis; convening a committee to implement Housing Study findings and actively pursue funding for projects; addressing underutilized and dilapidated buildings in the county and the development of a new industrial park.

“By gaining a full picture of the demand for housing, by targeting our site development preparation to our highest demand corridors and by collaborating with over 120 stakeholders in various facets of economic and community development, we are now more prepared than ever before to help our existing business community grow and attract new investment,” Charvat said.

CCNEDC also presented its annual awards, including:

• Business Recognition Award: Kerns Excavating of Plattsmouth

• Service of the Year Award: Cass County Volunteer Fire Departments

• Friend in Economic Development Award: John Winkler of Cedar Creek, general manager of the Papio Missouri River NRD

BUSINESS RECOGNITION AWARD: JOSH CHARVAT, CCNEDC EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR CHRIS KERNS, KERNS EXCAVATING KENNY KERNS, KERNS EXCAVATING BROOK AKEN, OPPD & CCNEDC BOARD PRESIDENT

FRIEND IN ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AWARD: JOSH CHARVAT, CCNEDC EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR JOHN WINKLER, PAPIO NRD BROOK AKEN, OPPD & CCNEDC BOARD PRESIDENT

The Cass County Nebraska Economic Development Council (www. CCNEDC.com) is a nonprofit business organization and part of the Greater Omaha Economic Development Partnership. The mission of CCNEDC is to attract, retain and grow businesses and jobs for all of Cass County Nebraska.

Corporate Fundamentals

Tell the Story

We hear a lot of explanations for why stocks continue to grind higher. However, we believe that the rebound from the October 2022 lows has clearly been led by corporate fundamentals. Other factors have helped this recovery including falling inflation, the Fed ending rate hikes and heavy investment into artificial intelligence. However, the bottom line is that stock prices represent the present value of future cash flows, which have been trending unquestionably higher. Set aside the manufacturing and small business surveys, 200-day moving averages, what party is in office, or what “phase” of the economic cycle we’re in and admire the simplicity of the chart below.

In our opinion, this is what the early stages of a bull market looks like.

What is also noteworthy on this chart is how much Wall Street forecasters underestimate growth rates, whether it’s trending up or down. This is why we are less concerned about the S&P 500’s valuation. Optically, it is higher than normal, which isn’t that unusual when growth rates are accelerating. In times like these, the actual results can be notably higher than forecasted expectations, as the chart above shows. It’s the reverse scenario that investors have to be cautious of, similar to what happened in 2022. Back then, valuation multiples looked “attractive” that year, leading many “value” investors into the teeth of a nasty bear market. This is why valuation shouldn’t headline an investment thesis.

Over three-fourths of the S&P 500 have reported 4Q24 earnings, and it’s the strongest growth we’ve seen in three years. Unsurprisingly, Communication Services and Information Technology have been the top contributors to this rise. On the other hand, rate-sensitive Energy and Industrials are the largest detractors. Over half of the 11 sectors of the S&P 500 are reporting double-

digit earnings growth.

Don’t make it more complicated than it needs to be.

ERICA SCHUMANN, DEVELOPMENT MANAGER, WOMEN’S FUND OF OMAHA

Midwest Leaders is a weekly section showcasing individuals who are making an impact in the community through their professional and volunteer endeavors. To nominate someone for this section, email news@ mbj.com with the individual’s name, position, company and email.

Bio:

Erica Schumann joined the Women’s Fund of Omaha in May 2024 as the Development Manager, but it wasn’t her first foray into nonprofit work. Prior to Women’s Fund, Schumann was the capital campaign and grants administrator for Omaha Performing Arts. Schumann’s long-standing belief in gender equality led her to pursue her doctoral in history from Binghamton (New York) University with a focus in women, gender and sexuality.

You joined the Women’s Fund of Omaha last May. What drew you to the organization and the position of development manager?

Before I even joined the Women’s Fund, I deeply admired the work they were doing at the legislature and I felt that their values aligned closely with my own. When the opportunity for the development position came up, it felt like the perfect moment to contribute to an organization making such a meaningful difference in the community. I knew the work the Women’s Fund was doing was as urgent as ever, and I wanted to find a way to bring my skills to an organization actively working toward gender equity in our community.

What is something about the Women’s Fund that you wish more people knew about?

I wish more people knew about the extraordinary breadth of the community-driven work the Women’s Fund is currently doing. From Access Granted to our Freedom from Violence work to our Circles’ leadership program, the Women’s Fund advances a wide range of programs that empower women, femmes and girls to create lasting change in our communities.

I also want more people to know that this year is extra special for us because the Women’s Fund is turning 35. Milestone years like this offer a chance to reflect on how much we’ve accomplished over the past several decades while also underscoring the importance of continuing to work to safeguard the progress we’ve made.

If you could give your younger self one piece of advice, what would it be?

Everything will come together. You don’t have to have everything figured out right away, and it’s okay to take your time and find your flow.

Job swap: if you could do any other job, what would it be and why?

If I had to swap careers, I’d probably pursue something history-related, whether at a university or a museum. I earned my Ph.D. in history in 2024 and while I’ve taken a different path professionally, I still get really excited communicating with others about the past and talking about the stories that are often overlooked. Everything has a history and I love helping people uncover the histories that are important to them.

As an Omaha transplant, what has surprised you most about this city? What are some of your favorite places to visit in Omaha?

I was most surprised about the strong sense of

Employer’s Guide: Navigating the New Landscape of Immigration Enforcement in the Workplace

As immigration enforcement intensifies under the Trump administration, employers should strengthen compliance efforts to mitigate risks from workplace raids, audits and stricter scrutiny of employer immigration practices.

Q: With increased immigration enforcement, what steps should employers take to ensure compliance?

A: Employers should strengthen their compliance efforts by maintaining accurate employment records and preparing for potential audits or raids. Key steps include ensuring I-9 compliance, conducting regular internal audits and training staff on I-9 procedures. It is also essential to establish a response plan for handling visits from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Q: What is a Form I-9, and why is it important?

A: Form I-9 verifies the identity and employment authorization of individuals hired in the U.S. Employers must complete this form for all hires, including citizens and noncitizens, and retain it for three years after hiring or one year after employment ends, whichever is longer. Properly managing I-9 records will help businesses avoid significant fines and civil and criminal penalties in the event of an audit or raid.

Q: What is the best way to address I-9 issues now?

A: Employers should confirm a Form I-9 exists for all employees hired after November 6, 1986; retain I-9s as required and dispose of expired forms properly; conduct regular audits to identify and correct errors; train staff responsible for I-9 completion and finally, consider hiring outside counsel for a compliance audit.

Q: What should businesses do to prepare for an ICE enforcement action?

A: Employers should develop a written response plan, designate personnel to handle ICE visits, and ensure legal counsel is readily

available. Businesses should be prepared to maintain a record of all ICE requests and actions made in connection with an enforcement action and ensure designated personnel are trained to respond in the event of a visit from ICE.

Q: What authority does ICE have during workplace enforcement actions?

A: ICE agents may enter public areas at a worksite, such as lobbies and parking lots, without permission or a warrant. However, entry into private areas requires either employer consent or a judicial warrant signed by a judge. Employers should be aware there are two types of warrants ICE may present: an administrative warrant and a judicial warrant.

• Administrative Warrant: Issued by a government agency (e.g., DHS) for civil immigration enforcement. It allows ICE to detain individuals but does not permit entry into private areas without employer consent.

• Judicial Warrant: Issued by a court and signed by a judge based on probable cause. This grants ICE broader authority, including the right to enter private spaces without employer consent.

Employers can proactively mitigate risks associated with immigration enforcement by maintaining strict I-9 compliance, conducting regular audits, and providing ongoing training for employees who handle employment verification. It’s also crucial to develop and implement a clear response plan for potential ICE actions. Additionally, consulting legal counsel to review workplace policies and ensure compliance with evolving regulations is essential.
