Serving Community with a Side of Kindness

Just ahead of its official February 3 opening, the city’s newest breakfast restaurant, HomeGrown Omaha, held a special sneak preview for friends and family. The new eatery is located at 3555 Farnam St., Ste 102, in Blackstone Plaza.

Guests were treated to a complimentary breakfast with the opportunity to donate to Completely KIDS, an Omaha nonprofit that provides a variety of community enrichment services for children, teens, and families through education, life skills and support services.

“We are incredibly grateful to HomeGrown Omaha for their partnership during their soft opening, which gave us the opportunity to connect with patrons, share our mission, and gather donations to support local kids and families,” said Taylor McBreen, the nonprofit’s director of marketing and communications. “Their generosity and commitment to the community helps strengthen the work we do at Completely KIDS, and we appreciate their

support in making a lasting impact.”

The restaurant is also currently home to an art installation by Katie Temple, program director at Completely KIDS, entitled “Cultivate Kindness, which the local artist described as a call to actively nurture an environment of compassion, empathy and support within our communities.

“I chose to depict actual streets located just south of HomeGrown Omaha,” Temple said. “A neighborhood or a street full of unique houses collectively reflects the diversity of the people.

“My work aims to highlight these interconnected ideas of kindness, community, and home, encouraging viewers to reflect on ways we contribute to and shape the environments where we live and thrive.”

Based in Kansas, HomeGrown Kitchen operates locations in Kansas City, Wichita, Des Moines and Rogers, Arkansas.

TOP 5 THINGS TO KNOW

Connecting businesses with interns

Over 200 high school juniors from 10 metro-area high schools attended an internship fair organized by Avenue Scholars on January 30. This event not only connects the students with potential employers and careers, but allows them to practice interviewing skills.

“This event is about more than just internships—it’s about investing in our community’s future,” said Lindsay Decker, CEO of Avenue Scholars, in a press release. “Our goal is to bridge the gap between education and industry, and the Internship Fair helps us forge connections between talented young students and local businesses.”

Representatives from 25 organizations in industries such as health care, business, education, information technology, transportation, and skilled trades met with students at the Avenue Scholars office, 2121 N. 117th Avenue in Omaha.

Avenue Scholars is dedicated to helping empower students through supportive relationships, coaching, education, and practice.

Companies and organizations looking to become involved with Avenue Scholars can find more information on the organization at avescholars.org.

Food Bank for the Heartland receives $1 million

Hy-Vee, Inc. presented a check for over $1 million to Food Bank for the Heartland on January 31, signifying the results of a 20-month campaign to raise funds for food banks across nine states. Funds were collected through register round-up campaigns at Omaha and Gretna Hy-Vee stores and Fast & Fresh locations. A number of national food manufacturers and suppliers also donated food and funds to the campaign. In total, more than 102 million meals were donated to partner food banks across the Midwest as a part of this multi-state campaign.

The Nonprofit Success Series

The Omaha Community Foundation announced a year-long program designed to help local nonprofits thrive. The series, called the Nonprofit Success Series, kicks off on February 11, 2025, at the Security National Bank location at 1120 S. 101st St. in Omaha and will cover what resources and tools the Omaha Community Foundation offers. Other themes being covered this year include: financial strategy, fiscal sponsorship fundamentals, winning grants, navigating funder relationships to sustain support, developing strategic plans, building non-discrimination statements, mastering non-profit finances, diversifying nonprofit revenue, understanding participatory grantmaking, and nonprofit lifecycle insights. Information about the events can be found on Eventbrite.

Hygiene Drive to benefit the WCA

The Omaha Community Playhouse is hosting a hygiene drive to benefit the Women’s Center for Advancement in Omaha during performances of “Waitress” running through February 16.

Attendees are invited to drop off essential hygiene items, such as deodorant, lotion, face wash, body wash, menstrual products, toothpaste and toothbrushes, shampoo and conditioner, and other hair and styling products. As an inclusive organization, the WCA would welcome donations that are inclusive of all hair and skin types.

The Women’s Center for Advancement helps support survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking.

Supporting student entrepreneurs

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has launched the Engler Enterprise Financing Program in partnership with Union Bank & Trust and Farm Credit Services of America to encourage student entrepreneurs. The program will provide low-interest startup loans, ranging from $5,000 to $25,000, to students as well as hands-on business training to students.

Abby Miller, a UNL alumna, received the first loan, which helped her expand her mobile tap-truck business. In a press release, Miller said that she came up with the idea to retrofit a 1950s Chevrolet truck when she was a freshman at UNL enrolled in the Engler Agribusiness Entrepreneurship Program. The $25,000 loan helped her add two vehicles to her fleet, enabling her to take on more businesses and hire employees all at the age of 23.

As loans are repaid, UNL officials said the money will be re-invested into new projects.

Black history is American history viewed through the experiences of African Americans, and it is essential for everyone to learn.
- ERIC L. EWING, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, GREAT PLAINS BLACK HISTORY MUSEUM

Black History Month IS EVERY DAY FOR LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS

The theme for this Black History Month, African Americans and Labor, centers on the varied and profound ways work intersects with the collective experiences of Black people.

According to the Washington D.C.-based Association for the Study of African American Life and History, 2025 also marks the centennial anniversary of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters and Maids, the first Black union to receive a charter in the American Federation of Labor.

Closer to home, the Great Plains Black History Museum has been an invaluable resource for the community since 1975 when Bertha Calloway envisioned creating a place to share the rich history of African Americans in Omaha. The museum’s mission is to educate as a means of bringing everyone together and encouraging the dialogue that bridges the divide.

“The Great Plains Black History Museum offers educational exhibits on African American organizations and pioneers in Omaha and the region,” explained Executive Director Eric L. Ewing.

When asked about particularly memorable or surprising historical facts, two came to mind.

“Omaha is home to Nebraska’s oldest African American-owned business, which has been operating since 1938 as the state’s only African American newspaper – [The] Omaha Star,” he said. “Hayes

& Associates, the largest independently owned and operated accounting firm based in Omaha, Nebraska, has been serving the community since 1983.”

Ewing also confirmed how history impacts present day entrepreneurship and business contributions, and its overall importance.

“Through our exhibits, we aim to inform guests about the history and contributions of African Americans to the United States and their influence on current and future entrepreneurs,” he stated.

“Black history is American history viewed through the experiences of African Americans, and it is essential for everyone to learn.”

During Black History Month, GPBHM is hosting its annual membership drive. Ewing encourages anyone wishing to support its exhibitions and gain members-only benefits to visit gpblackhistorymuseum.org. There are various membership levels, from student to business and lifetime memberships.

Year-round, he said, teams can schedule an appointment to visit the museum online on Wednesdays to Saturdays between the hours of 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Ewing also noted readers can request a traveling exhibit for display at their respective organizations, or a virtual or onsite Lunch and Learn presentation.

MIDLANDS BUSINESS

As the nation engages in more open and ongoing conversations about Black experiences, students of all backgrounds are increasingly eager to explore these topics in-depth. Black Studies provides a platform for those open discussions.

The community classroom

For Cynthia L. Robinson and her team at the Department of Black Studies at the University of Nebraska Omaha, every month is Black History Month.

“That said, we are working on organizing speakers who can engage with both the campus and the broader Omaha community,” the department chair and associate professor said. “These efforts are part of our commitment to fostering ongoing dialogue and education around Black experiences, history and culture.”

Robinson indicated the department has made significant strides in 2024.

“One highlight was the North Omaha Initiative, which is housed in the Department of Black Studies, receiving Weitz Innovation Excellence Fund support,” she said. “The grant has enabled UNO to further engage with and support the local community, strengthening our mission to connect education with real-world impact.”

As a partnership with the Urban League of Nebraska, this “community-centered” education initiative is described as not just a classroom, but a hub of collaboration, innovation and opportunity.

The Weitz Innovation and Excellence funds are designed to inspire faculty and staff to consider new ideas that align with one of the following pillars: educating all learners; community engagement, development, and partnerships; and workforce and economic development.

“There are several ways the business community can support our mission. Getting involved with the North Omaha Initiative is a great start,” Robinson added. “This program is now in its second semester, with enrollment numbers increasing. Additionally, contributions toward tuition assistance for our community classes make a tremendous difference.”

While many individuals want to participate, she said they need support with tuition costs.

“Even small donations can help us extend access to these valuable educational opportunities,” Robinson said.

In general, she emphasized that there is great excitement in Black Studies among students and in the community.

“Our focus is ensuring that students are well-advised and aware of the broad applications of a Black Studies major, which integrates seamlessly with other fields of study,” Robinson said. “As the nation engages in more open and ongoing conversations about Black experiences, students of all backgrounds are increasingly eager to explore these topics in-depth. Black Studies provides a platform for those open discussions.”

The department describes Black Studies as a “newly revitalized

OF NEBRASKA OMAHA

discipline.”

“The revitalization of Black Studies lies in its interdisciplinary approach,” Robinson said. “By connecting with other departments across the university, we’ve made it easier for students to pair Black Studies with other academic interests, whether as a major, minor or through elective courses. This flexibility allows students to integrate Black Studies into a variety of career paths while highlighting the program’s relevance across disciplines.”

In the new year, Robinson said a top institutional priority remains increasing the number of Black Studies majors and enrollment in its courses.

“This year marks my 10th year as chair and during this time, we have completely overhauled the curriculum to make it more interdisciplinary,” she said. “This transformation ensures we are meeting students’ needs and growing interest in the field.”

[The program] aims to create a cohesive and attractive business district that will attract visitors and shoppers, ultimately boosting local commerce.
- LAVONYA GOODWIN, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, NORTH 24TH STREET BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT ASSOCIATION

New life for a historically important area

LaVonya Goodwin serves as executive director of the North 24th Street Business Improvement District Association, which is dedicated to championing the economic development, infrastructure improvement, promotion and safety of the area. The nonprofit association functions as the operating arm of the BID.

Goodwin highlighted four priorities: the North 24th Street Streetscape Master Plan; building restoration and façade improvement; litter control and beautification; and crime prevention through environmental design.

Master plan projects address the likes of sidewalk repair, pedestrian safety, sustainable landscaping, historical themes, parking, and multimodal transit from Meredith Avenue to Cuming Street. The project, which has about $53 million in funding, will, in part, include community engagement beginning in the first quarter of this year.

The $2 million restoration/façade improvements seek to revitalize the visual identities of businesses between Meredith Avenue and Cuming Street.

“[The program] aims to create a cohesive and attractive business district that will attract visitors and shoppers, ultimately boosting local commerce,” Goodwin said.

The latter projects include regular groundskeeping and cleanups, advocating against commercial dumping and improving upon neglected properties, as well as the efforts of its pilot Crime Prevention Through Environment Design (CPTED) program.

The 24th Street BID’s CPTED program was launched in June 2020, and Goodwin said through grassroots efforts and low-cost, accessible tools they are working to “create a neighborhood that is conducive to economic investment and healthy living.”

She referred to tools and efforts such as monthly community conversations, dusk-to-dawn lighting, public safety announcements and closed property signs.

Going forward, she highlighted the opening of the restoration/ facade improvement program in March; Good Morning Business Networking event on March 12; and Community Clean Up dates on Saturdays starting in April. Addressing classroom, business barriers

The Urban League of Nebraska recently announced two projects with big implications for the business community and greater community as a whole: the Nebraska Opportunity Exchange: Empowering Small Businesses to Thrive Through Contracts Onboarding and Certification Series, and a grant to support the Youth Attendance Navigator program.

The former initiative aims to support underrepresented small businesses in the state by equipping them with tools, resources, and training to access capital, navigate contracting and thrive in the competitive business landscape.

These efforts are in conjunction with the Greater Omaha Chamber and MCL Construction, and the series (which runs from January to March) spans in-person and virtual workshops and training on unlocking venture capital and federal grants, and financial planning and tax strategies.

“Nebraska Opportunity Exchange Fund participants will have the chance to apply for a microloan of up to $50,000, specifically designed to assist with procurement costs,” said President and CEO Wayne Brown. “To qualify, participants must attend three in-person sessions on topics such as capital access, legal compliance, financial planning,

and contract growth, in addition to completing three procurementfocused sessions.”

Eligible participants include minorities, women and veteran-owned small business entrepreneurs who are looking to scale and win government and corporate contracts through funding, certifications and growth strategies.

The Urban League is also involved in a program through the Oregon Research Institute to help improve student attendance and academic success in urban schools.

The Youth Attendance Navigator Program operates across eight urban middle and high schools in Omaha, and will include embedding mentors with lived experiences into schools to effectively address barriers to attendance and foster meaningful connections.

Brown noted that the program has demonstrated success in addressing chronic absenteeism exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This significant investment allows us to rigorously evaluate and enhance the Youth Attendance Navigator program, ensuring its continued success and providing a blueprint for replication nationwide,” he said. “This research partnership with ORI enables us to refine and expand a program that is already making a difference in the lives of students and families.”

Second Martin Luther King March

DIGNITARIES AND CITIZENS MARCH IN KING’S HONOR

Over 400 people braved the cold to participate in the second Martin Luther King March in north Omaha. Local Black leaders and representatives from City Hall including Mayor Jean Stothert and Omaha Chief of Police Todd Schmaderer joined local citizens in saluting the life and legacy of the fallen civil rights leader.

King, whose “I Have a Dream” speech delivered at the March on Washington in August 1963 is held as one of the most important moments in the U.S. civil rights movement, was felled by an assassin’s bullet in April 1968 in Memphis. In 1983 Martin Luther King Jr. Day was established as a federal holiday.

Some organizers of the Feb. 1 event told media outlets such public displays are important to keep King’s work and message alive.

“People have allowed themselves to fall asleep,” Tim Clark, co-organizer told WOWT. “I think it is time that folks realize how we got here is hard work. It was folks like Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, civil rights leaders who did the work, did the marching.”

From the starting point at 24th and Lake Streets, marchers made their way to Salam Baptist Church where North End Teleservices announced $50,000 worth of college scholarships.

Bonafide Dog Academy TREATS FOR TRICKS

From the outside, Bonafide Dog Academy looks like a warehouse for dog training. Upon entry the warm interior invites fur parents to relax in the comfort of knowing their dogs will be taken care of by people passionate about their animals.

The building is a repurposed Bounce U with two large rooms in the back for play or training, a room towards the front where a rehab specialist helps the dogs who need it, a side room for the young, elderly or anxious and a sniff room for dogs to exercise their minds.

“We have dogs who were in our puppy training course when we first bought Bonafide who are still with us,” said Susan Bailey. Bonafide has a day academy that offers more structure than the average doggie daycare.

“We don’t really train the dogs in our classes. We train owners how to lead their dogs,” Bailey said.

Bailey and her late husband, Andy, were customers before they acquired Bonafide. The founders, Jeff and Dawn Antoniak-Mitchell, moved to Arizona and suggested the Baileys purchase the academy.

Qualified staff

Dog training is an unregulated industry. Anyone can put up an ad on Facebook and get some skin in the game. Bonafide prides itself on having educated training personnel, with each trainer being a Certified Professional Dog Trainer, or being trained through the Animal Behavior College. New recruits are required to shadow other

trainers before leading classes on their own.

“There’s one thing to have book knowledge but another to actually do it,” Bailey said.

The classes offered at Bonafide range from puppy to adult as well as other classes targeting special training needs.

The academy is a proponent of positive reinforcement training as a tool to strengthen the bond between dog and owner. Prong collars and shock collars are not used on Bonafide’s grounds.

“It’s instant gratification. The dog will do whatever you want it to do because if they don’t it’s punitive,” Bailey said. “There’s no easy fix. You have got to put the time in.”

Innovation rules

“I belong to an online community of people who own dog training businesses and we share new practices,” she said.

One piece of knowledge shared is in Bonafide’s sniff room. It is an area in the building for mental exercise. Treats are hidden throughout the room and dogs get to play a tasty game of hide and seek.

It is important to Bailey to stay ahead of the curve. When Bonafide began its day program, there weren’t other places offering structure but as the years gone by, similar models have become more common.

Personal touch

Bonafide made it through the pandemic without shutting its doors and without offering online dog training as a workaround. While she understands the convenience, such remote training is not something Bailey is interested in now that pandemic worries have eased.

“When a dog is isolated in the home they don’t get the socialization that in-person classes offer. They don’t learn to tolerate others,” she said.

At the heart of Bonafide is a love for animals. The company provided its back room to a local rescue working to get a particular dog rehabilitated for adoption. On the first visit, the dog cowered in the corner. On the last, it was running around playing with the tunnels and different obstacles.

Bonafide started in the back of the Ralston Vet Clinic. Six years and two locations later, it resides in the former Bounce-U building just north of 72nd Street on Pacific Street.

Thank You China

What an eventful time in the ever-evolving world of artificial intelligence! Last week during the World Economic Forum, a number of notable announcements were made. First, Meta announced that it would spend upwards of $65 billion in capital expenditures in 2025, largely driven by AI. Microsoft reiterated its plans to spend $80 billion on AI data centers. Furthermore, President Trump announced Stargate, which is a joint venture by OpenAI, Softbank, and Oracle to spend $500 billion on AI infrastructure in the US over the next 5 years. The future of AI couldn’t have looked any brighter in the US.

Then China crashed the party. Or did it just spike the punch bowl?

In a very well-timed announcement, a small Chinese firm called DeepSeek released an AI model that seems to be competitive with top US models. While this was notable, what spooked investors was its claim that it spent only $6 million to train and used a relatively small amount of strippeddown Nvidia chips. Well, not exactly. What the media overlooked was a key sentence in DeepSeek’s technical paper that stated that this amount did not include “costs associated with prior research and ablation experiments on architectures, algorithms, and data,” which likely required hundreds of millions of dollars. Also, OpenAI and others said that there’s evidence that DeepSeek used “distillation” to train its model. In other words, it stole the technology by using US models to “teach” its smaller “student” model, which is against OpenAI’s terms of service.

While media and markets were abuzz about what this meant for future AI investment in the US, there was a meaningful gift that the Chinese gave the world’s AI community – a new architecture that meaningfully reduces AI’s operating costs. In fact, it claimed that the model’s cost to generate an “answer” was 93% less than OpenAI’s and required much less memory. Granted, it had to make trade-offs that hurt the model’s performance in other ways, but most agree that it was an algorithmic breakthrough. The Chinese have a history of taking existing inventions and engineering out costs. This doesn’t appear to be much different.

What people seem to have forgotten is how Silicon Valley was built on falling costs, as shown in the chart above. Whether it’s personal computers, internet broadband, televisions, or solar panels, US technology has thrived on declining cost curves. This either reduces price or substantially improves performance at a similar cost. This allows the technology to become ubiquitous and unlocks new functionality. We doubt there were many users of dial-up internet in the late 1990s thinking that faster broadband would allow for the creation of Uber or Airbnb. We think this latest AI breakthrough will yield similar results over time.

Don’t get us wrong – China’s AI progress is concerning from a geopolitical perspective, especially considering the technology restrictions that it faces. Ironically, this was likely the source of its breakthrough due to only having access to AI chips with low memory. However, China’s word should be met with skepticism. They have large incentives to discourage further US investment. Lastly, we just can’t imagine a world where Chinese AI models would be adopted widely in the West.

Our final thought about this past week was how easily investors were rattled by these developments. For those that are concerned (or convinced) that we’re in an AI bubble, it sure didn’t take much to get investors to question everything and cause a meaningful selloff. Rather, it proves to us that many are still quite skeptical of AI, which gives us more confidence that we’re still in the early innings of this powerful trend.

What inspired you to become a lawyer?

I always knew that I either wanted to be a doctor or a lawyer. I didn’t have a great representation of what it would be like to be a lawyer within my family, or even within my extended village. So I took notes from the women who I saw in the media. My big influence was Phylicia Rashad’s character Clair Huxtable on “The Cosby Show,” because she was a Black woman who was an attorney, and she was married with a family, and those were all things that I wanted growing up.

You’ve shared your time and expertise with several organizations throughout your career. Why was volunteering important to you, and what impact has it had on your life?

So many people helped me and poured into me when I was growing up. My parents placed me in these wonderful community organizations, like Girls Inc., where I could be around people who could help me get to where I wanted to go. My parents were also very big on volunteerism, so growing up, that was part of what we did in my family and it carried over into my adulthood. I try to make sure that I instill those values in my two sons, who I have dragged to probably too many community events, town hall forums, and polling places.

What is one piece of advice you would give your younger self?

A lot of the financial knowledge and literacy that I have now was from making mistakes. I would tell my younger self to make sure that I prioritize my financial literacy and wellness early on.

I would also tell myself to focus more on alignment.

Sometimes, when you’re younger you take every responsibility that comes your way and then you look up and realize this really isn’t anything that you’re interested in. Or, I’ve taken some jobs in the past because I felt like I could make more money, and I ended up not caring for those positions because I didn’t feel like I was helping anyone. So making sure that things are aligned with what I’m most passionate about.

How do you find balance and avoid burnout?

Balance is always one of those goals that’s off in the distance that I’m trying to meet. I try to set goals around balance, like I would my finances or my education, and I try to hold myself accountable. I have friends that are my own personal board of directors who serve as accountability

A friend or family member is visiting Omaha. Where are you taking them to experience Omaha like a local?

I would definitely take anyone to our zoo. You have to eat a steak while you’re here. We have some wonderful neighborhood districts, like Blackstone, Benson and Dundee, so I’d take them there.
