CAREER-DEFINING

When visitors and patrons got their first look last September at the long-awaited second expansion of The Joslyn — two years and $100 million in the making — they marveled at the architecture, the massive windows flooding interior spaces with light, and the seamlessly graceful manner in which the new section redefined the beloved art museum’s existing structure.

Few, it must be said, likely commented on the project’s mechanical systems, lighting or how it was all engineered to a level of sustainability and efficiency worthy of LEED Gold certification.

Ironically, the fact people didn’t notice the air ducts and miles of electrical accoutrement in the walls — and still don’t — is something of a compliment, at least as far as Andrew Lang is concerned.

“Obviously the stakes were very high,” said Lang, a partner with Morrissey Engineering and electrical project manager for the high-profile addition. “The museum specifically had goals of this being an iconic piece of architecture

for Omaha, which made designing the building systems within that very complicated. It required a lot of interdisciplinary coordination and a lot of creativity to make our stuff be in the background and not distracting from the design of the building.

“Also, being trusted to provide a safe environment for an irreplaceable, priceless art collection, which was our first responsibility, set a pretty high bar of excellence right there.”

Challenge accepted

As if those details weren’t anxiety-inducing enough, Lang also noted the onset of the pandemic added another level of complexity to what was already a far-flung project of daunting complexity.

“It was a very interesting process actually, because the main design architect was the New York City office of Snøhetta and there was a structural engineer firm in Seattle,” he said. “We had a lighting designer from New York.

The Joslyn is a visitor-centered cultural institution. The collaboration with Morrissey on our expansion ensured the optimal environment for art and people.
-

We had a façade consultant from New York. So, a very big, complicated team that spread all over the country.

“We were maybe 35% of the way through the design process before COVID19 struck and before that everyone was coming to Omaha to meet every so often. [The pandemic] shut that down and really pushed us into a virtual collaboration, which we all sort of learned on the fly.”

The resulting 42,000-square-foot expansion project is breathtaking, offering new gallery spaces, atrium and redesigned exterior public garden spaces. Lang takes particular pride in the exacting details of the work which was successfully orchestrated virtually during the planning and design phase.

“We spent a lot of time looking at 3D models with everyone’s stuff in it and talking through how each piece comes together,” he said. “We were not only coordinating internally but with architects who are out-of-town and a structural engineering team that included an out-of-town and an Omaha structural engineer.

“There’s things that all had to be coordinated to the quarter inch so that when they made the steel beam, the holes are in the right spot for the duct to go through it. That occurs everywhere in that building.”

Award winning

The general public may not appreciate what it took for Morrissey Engineering to pull off this complicated feat — in addition to electrical under Lang, the firm also handled mechanical engineering duties under project leader Jason Eickmeier — but the industry has sat up and taken notice. The firm took home the Grand Award from the Nebraska chapter of the American Council

of Engineering Companies and is in the running for a similar accolade at the national level.

Among the many other things that stand out about the project is its focus on sustainability, a requirement which has, in a relatively short time period, become a priority for clients across the board, Lang said.

UNVEILED LAST SEPTEMBER, JOSLYN’S STUNNING EXPANSION TOOK TWO YEARS AND COST $100 MILLION.

Being trusted to provide a safe environment for an irreplaceable, priceless art collection … set a pretty high bar of excellence.

MORRISSEY ENGINEERING’S AWARD-WINNING WORK ON ELECTRICAL AND MECHANICAL SYSTEMS AUGMENTED THE MUSEUM’S STUNNING DESIGN ELEMENTS.

“[Joslyn officials] made the point that they wanted it to be the most sustainable museum in the state of Nebraska,” he said. “It’s been a really interesting trend overall. Take something like LED lighting which, obviously these days is the standard, the baseline expectation. The Nebraska History Museum was a project I worked on only 10 years ago and I distinctly remember that was the first building that I designed that was 100% LED. Everything up until then included fluorescent tubes and this mishmash of different things.

“Since then, for our firm specifically, sustainability has been one of the core principles of what we do. We believe in it strongly and we’ve tried to educate clients on it to varying degrees of interest. What we’re seeing now is the sophistication of questions that we are getting from clients is getting better. They’re asking about things like beneficial electrification and indoor air quality before we even have a chance to bring it up. It’s definitely something people are more aware of and having these conversations helps us advance sustainability in our industry.”

A thriving industry

Omaha is a prime breeding ground for this kind of innovation, be it in sustainability or some other aspects of engineering, Lang said, thanks to the presence of several major engineering firms. This environment helps attract and retain young talent and while it’s a very competitive marketplace it’s also one that has a national reputation within the engineering field.

“In engineering, we obviously rely heavily on the right people and so recruiting talent is a key business success factor,” he said. “We have great partners at the University of Nebraska, where we have been very active in hiring. I came from that program, a lot of our firm did. Omaha is a very engineering-heavy city because there are several very large firms headquartered here, so competition for people is very great.

“That creates a lot of great opportunity for students and people in the industry but it also creates a demand that is higher than it otherwise would be for a city of our size. So, we regularly look to surrounding states to recruit people to come to Omaha. We’re always looking to maximize the available talent pool.” CONTINUED

ENGINEERS WEEK INTRODUCES STUDENTS TO THE WORLD OF ENGINEERING

Year after year, the field of engineering continues to evolve. The industry has seen specific changes when it comes to the advancements of technology but it has also grappled with finding the right strategies to build a flexible yet knowledgeable workforce.

Looking ahead at 2025, there are some unique things to keep an eye on when it comes to engineering trends. But one thing is certain: engineering is still a stable and desirable career option and inspiring students to pursue a career in this meaningful work is a priority.

Engineering trends

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment within the architecture and engineering fields is projected to grow faster than the average for all occupations from 2023 to 2033.

“Employment trends for engineering still appear to be strong both in 2025 and beyond,” said Steph Guy, principal and mechanical engineer with Alvine Engineering. “We may have to be more flexible and nimbler with changes in the economy. While overall design and construction spending is solid, it is down from recent highs in 2022. But, we remain

optimistic and are always looking to add skilled professionals who meet specific needs.”

Engineering firms everywhere are looking for ways to draw people into the field, too.

One way is by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into the business. Students are learning how to use the technology and incorporate it into their daily lives. When it comes to their careers, more and more companies and organizations are finding ways that it can benefit operations. Within the engineering sector, there are a variety of AI tools that can automate processes and bolster productivity. This allows engineers in all different fields to focus more on client service and on other higher-value tasks.

Another is by taking a more active role in the field by participating in local and national career fairs, hosting lectures and partnering with local universities to provide internships and other on-site work opportunities.

With the various advancements in robotics, automation, and other technologies, more unique engineering projects are being completed. Firms are demonstrating some of the one-of-a-kind projects to inspire

16 and culminate on February 22. Local educators, engineering firms, professional organizations and universities are preparing to commemorate the special week with various events.

Designated as one of the largest science, technology, engineering and math events of the year in the United States, National Engineers Week was started by the National Society of Professional Engineers in 1951. The celebration coincides

with President George Washington’s birthday, who was considered the nation’s first engineer.

This year’s theme is “Design the Future” and it will be used as both a call to action and a celebration of the boundless possibilities and opportunities that the engineering field offers. The week invites participants both young and old to dream, innovate and use creativity and ingenuity to reach their goals.

DiscoverE, the organization behind Engineers Week, aims to inspire innovators through fun and engaging engineering activities, lesson plans, lectures, workshops and other means of sharing information.

According to the DiscoverE site, engineers are working to advance technology and solve global challenges. The work engineers are doing today is creating a stronger future and helping reshape how people live and work, primarily in the areas of renewable energy, artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, gene editing, urban planning and more.

“Engineers design the buildings we work in, the roads we drive on, and the computers and phones that we use,” Guy said. “Engineering is a great field to work in because it offers new challenges every day and engineers love solving problems.

“The new challenges engineers face daily are how we keep engaged. There are also ample opportunities for both collaboration with others and heads-down work time so it can be a good fit for a lot of different people.”

Local firms promote industry

“This E-Week, we are celebrating how engineers design our future,” said Sarah Mullen, communications senior specialist at Olsson. “One way we’re doing that is by holding a friendly competition among our employees: the Mystery Box Challenge whereby participating teams will receive a box with instructions, rules and supplies

to complete an engineering challenge. It’s a great way for our teams to gather together and celebrate the benefits of engineering while building camaraderie.”

Katy Boggs, executive director of the Nebraska Society of Professional Engineers, said local society members are participating in different activities designed to promote their profession and inspire young people.

“School visit outreach is a great way for our members to spark interest in engineering careers and demonstrate the real-world applications of STEM concepts,” she said.

Guy said her team will celebrate internal staff and projects.

“At Alvine, we share our recent American Council of Engineering Consultants award recognitions, highlighting our project work throughout the U.S. over the past

year, as well as a special ‘Introduce a Girl to Engineering’ feature on our social media channels. In addition, we provide some special treats for our employees to celebrate their dedication to the engineering profession.”

When asked what advice he had for people considering the field, Priebe said the time has never been better to pursue a career in engineering.

“Do it! You won’t regret it,” Priebe said. “Engineering is a very rewarding profession, allowing you to witness and be a part of projects from start to finish. You often get to see the results of your hard work. Although it can be difficult and challenging at times, you will grow and become a better person and engineer because of those challenges.”

State of Nebraska - Office of the Capitol Commission | NE State Capitol HVAC and Window Repair

Alvine Engineering is the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) engineer of record for the Nebraska State Capitol (NSC) HVAC Replacement and Window Restoration Project, which is a seven-phase renovation that includes two pre-construction design phases and five phases of construction. Phase 3 of the renovation involved all of the areas within the basement through the third level of the NSC’s northwest quadrant, which notably contains the iconic George W. Norris Legislative Chamber and the West Lounge. The two-pipe induction unit HVAC system that supplied the facility meant the office spaces couldn’t be heated and cooled at the same time, which proved to be disadvantageous during temperature fluctuations experienced throughout Nebraska’s spring and fall seasons. This, in addition to the aging infrastructure, caused the Office of the Capitol Commission to initiate the replacement project.

Kiewit Luminarium | Kiewit Luminarium

The Kiewit Luminarium is a testament to the design ingenuity and cross-discipline collaboration that occurs when great minds get together. Seated on the Omaha Riverfront, the museum is built on top of an old industrial site. While the site was preferred for the vistas and views associated with an iconic downtown riverfront community learning and STEM space, it was not ideal for the associated challenges related to the adjacent flood wall and below grade obstructions. The structural design responded to what lurked beneath the building and HDR’s engineers were able to adapt and adjust to the challenges associated with remnants of an industrial plant that occupied the land from the 1870s to 1997. HDR played a key role in implementing innovative solutions to make the land usable again. HDR provided building design services for the development, including architectural design, interior and landscape design, together with holistic building engineering services, including structural, mechanical, electrical, public health, site civil, lighting design, information and communication technologies, security and fire protection.

Central Platte Natural Resources District | Alda Crane Viewing Site Improvements

Each spring, over 80% of the world’s population of sandhill cranes — around 1,000,000 birds — converge on the Platte River in central Nebraska. This migration draws bird watchers, scientists, and tourists from around the globe. The Alda Crane Viewing site, located near Alda, Nebraska, is a key destination for this migration. However, after 30 years of being exposed to the elements, the site faced several challenges: the wooden deck was deteriorating, the asphalt trail was in poor condition, and there was inadequate parking. Recognizing the need for substantial improvements, the Central Platte Natural Resources District (CPNRD) contracted JEO Consulting Group to develop a renovation. The renovation project replaced the deteriorating wooden deck and outdated asphalt trail with a new elevated viewing deck and a 1,160foot ADA-compliant concrete path. Alternatives were explored for the three existing parking lots, resulting in two being upgraded to concrete surfaces with designated handicapped parking spots, while the third was decommissioned and repurposed for maintenance activities.

From start to finish, it included all aspects of engineering from surveying, demolition and removal of existing buildings and infrastructure, over-excavation and surcharging of the soils, relocation of significant utility mains, ADA accessibility analysis, detailed grading design, incorporation of aesthetic landscaping and intriguing light systems, drainage and stormwater calculations, fire truck accessibility and pedestrianfriendly design. The project has created a unique space that will bring together people from across the city and the region to enjoy the amenities, the events, the restaurants and the retail shops for years to come.

Felsburg Holt Ullevig City of Omaha | 156th Street

This project improved a heavily-traveled roadway in the community and provided a significant increase in public safety, particularly around Kiewit Middle School. The main objective was to find a way to alleviate severe traffic congestion during school hours. The solution to expand 156th Street to four lanes and to realign the school’s north driveway to create a new intersection solved the problem. The addition of a traffic signal and the redesign of the roadway resulted in a smoother traffic flow, drastically reducing the bottlenecks that previously caused frustration for parents and commuters during peak hours. A key feature of the project was its focus on pedestrian safety, particularly around high-traffic areas like Kiewit Middle School. By enhancing sidewalk connections, the project prioritized the well-being of students and community members, ensuring safer and more accessible routes, which is a testament to its commitment to social responsibility.

Felsburg Holt Ullevig City of Blair | Blair South Bypass

In smaller communities, the downtown district often serves as the lifeblood of the area, but for the City of Blair, that vitality was at risk. The Blair South Bypass Project is a forwardthinking solution designed to tackle pressing traffic issues while enhancing the overall quality of life for the community. This project isn’t just about constructing a new road — it’s about building a safer, more accessible, and vibrant environment for everyone. The new road provides a critical alternative route for traffic, particularly the heavy truck flow that has long caused congestion in downtown Blair. By offering drivers a more direct way to travel between two major highways, the project significantly reduces traffic in the heart of the city. With the addition of new sidewalks, crosswalks, and a multi-use 10-foot trail, the project ensures that everyone — whether walking, biking, or driving — can navigate the city safely and comfortably.

City of Lincoln Parks and Recreation | Fletcher Landmark Trail

The Fletcher Landmark Trail project is a 1.2-mile,10foot-wide by 5-inch-thick concrete trail that improves pedestrian and bicycle access in north Lincoln and connects the community to nearby parks, businesses, and schools. Lincoln’s Parks and Recreation Department, Nebraska Department of Transportation, and Olsson worked closely to keep the project on schedule and within budget. The team successfully delivered a project that minimized impacts to adjacent properties and natural resources, including the protection of 14 different wetlands. The design also avoided filling into an existing pond and maintained existing drainage paths to remain within the Nationwide Permit threshold. Facilitating a potential future roadway widening was another consideration during design. In cooperation with the City of Lincoln, Olsson led engagement activities to effectively provide the public and area residents with details on construction detour and project information. The trail links residences and businesses bound by North 14th Street, Interstate 80, and North 27th Street to the City of Lincoln’s greater trail network.

Denny Wilson Recognized for Service to State’s Engineering Industry

ACEC NE honors Wilson with the Nebraska Engineering Pillar Award

Dennis (Denny) Wilson, Director for Sarpy County Public Works, has been awarded the 2025 Nebraska Engineering Pillar Award by the American Council of Engineering Companies Nebraska (ACEC NE) for his leadership and service to the profession.

“I am shocked, excited, and elated, but most of all, I feel honored. It is an honor to be recognized by my peers and the ACEC NE Board of Directors,” said Wilson, who has served as Director for Sarpy County Public Works for the last 15 years. Wilson is in his fourth elected term as the Sarpy County Engineer.

In his position as the Director of Public Works, Wilson has charge and general supervision of improvements by the county board. He and his staff prepare road and bridge designs, stormwater control, project estimates, and conduct winter work.

Wilson has spent his entire career in engineering. He received a bachelor’s degree in engineering, design, and construction at UNL and UNO. Wilson also holds an Executive Master of Business from UNL and a PhD in Consumer Behavior from Iowa State University.

“Engineering is an interesting field that comprises science and math, which may sound simple, but the requirements are anything but that. A Professional Engineer’s (PE) responsibility is to protect the public with help and support by organizations such as ACEC NE and the Nebraska Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE),” he explained. “It necessitates licensing through education, experience, and expertise to practice safely and ethically.”

Wilson often thinks about the future of the industry. “When I have the opportunity, I ask young people if they are still in school and have plans for college. I provide them with information and explain how engineers can save lives. That usually starts a conversation,” said Wilson.

He adds that one thing hasn’t changed.

“There still exists a lack of engineers. The gaping hole was present in 1974, and it is still present today. Large and small firms are searching for college graduates and seasoned engineers. It is gratifying to see more women involved in the practice and more diversity in hiring for our professions.”

After a 42-year career, Wilson says he has two loves.

“My first love is work with consultants and agencies. My second love is politics. Before I worked for Hal Daub, the former mayor of Omaha, he surprised

me by attending, speaking, and handing me the Executive MBA Student Award of the Year (1999). He later asked me to work for him to oversee the massive growth of downtown Omaha,” said Wilson.

Douglas County Engineer Todd Pfitzer first met Wilson in 1990 when he was the design engineer at the City of Omaha. Wilson and Pfitzer served together on a Metropolitan Area Planning Association (MAPA).

“Denny always stays on the ethical side of engineering and within the lines that a PE should. I have so many great memories of working with Denny throughout my career. He has been and will continue to be a pillar to the industry,” said Pfitzer.

Pfitzer acknowledges their 35 years of friendship.

“Denny has a quick wit and great (sometimes very dry) sense of humor and loves telling long jokes with the perfect pauses in place, then delivering his dry punch line with that little grin on his face. His good-natured ribbing often results in laughter as we tease each other front a room full of people – always with much love and appreciation for one another. I can’t wait to help honor him,” said Pfitzer.

ACEC NE Executive Director Jeanne McClure credits Wilson’s leadership and partnership with ACEC NE and within the industry.

“Strong leadership in our community is exemplified by those who build and sustain the infrastructure that supports us all. The engineering professionals who serve as pillars in our community not only create the physical foundations of our daily lives, but also inspire the next generation of innovators and problem solvers. We are deeply grateful for Denny’s dedication, expertise, and vision. I am grateful for his partnership with ACEC NE,” said McClure.

Denny lives in Papillion, NE, and has three daughters and seven grandchildren.

ACEC Nebraska established the Nebraska Engineering Pillar Award to recognize outstanding engineers who have supported the organization and its mission, as well as contributed to the engineering community in the state. The organization represents consulting engineering firms in Nebraska, and its mission is to improve the quality of life in the state by strengthening the business environment for the consulting engineering profession.

Debunking Market Concentration Concerns, Part II

HFS is still hearing a lot of misguided takes about the S&P 500’s concentration. Several months ago, we addressed this topic in an article titled “The S&P 500’s Concentration is a Denominator Problem.” We pointed out that many top components generate a substantial portion of their business overseas, so their size should be compared to global market capitalization – not just the U.S. This “concentration risk” now seems like an excuse used by traditional value investors to explain their underperformance in the name of “risk management.” It’s like they believe that the top 10 holdings of the S&P 500 are on the edge of some proverbial cliff and will eventually plunge like Wile E. Coyote in Looney Tunes. Mean reversion is the core of their thesis, which is heavy on hope versus substance. Instead, they’re hiding out in “low valuation” areas that are cyclical, sensitive to higher interest rates, and have little exposure to the powerful secular trends that are reshaping the corporate and consumer landscape.

Ironically, one of these preferred hideouts is international stocks, which are often even more concentrated than the US.

In fact, the chart above understates market concentration overseas. It’s even more pronounced when looking at the MSCI indices, which are some of the most widely used for international and global investors. For example, the top 10 components of the German MSCI index account for 61% of its value with the software firm SAP representing about 18% alone. (Imagine the anxiety that would occur among traditional value investors if Nvidia became 18% of the S&P 500). Australia’s top 10 holdings make up nearly 61% with its top holding (a 114-year-old bank) being over 13%. The top 10 companies of France’s MSCI benchmark account for just under 60%. The UK is nearly 50%. Currently, the top 10 holdings of the S&P 500 represent 36% of its value and no single company accounts for more than 7%.

Furthermore, this isn’t the first time that U.S. markets have been concentrated. In the early 1960s, the top 10 US firms accounted for about 30% of stock market value. A study published by finance professors out of Princeton showed that stock market concentration reached 38% in 1900. During these times, U.S. stocks didn’t plunge shortly after – subsequent returns proved healthy. Another study from the Journal of Economics

Source: FactSet and Counterpoint Global. Note: Stacked bars reflect cumulative concentrations; Universe includes companies on the following stock exchanges: Switzerland: SIX Swiss Exchange; France: Euronext Paris; Australia: Australian Securities Exchange; Germany: Xetra; South Korea: Korea Exchange; United Kingdom: London Stock Exchange; Taiwan: Taiwan Stock Exchange and Taipei Exchange: Canada: Toronto Stock Exchange; U.S.: New York Stock Exchange, NASDAQ, and NYSE American; India: Bombay Stock Exchange); Japan: Tokyo Stock Exchange; China: Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Exchange

showed that the weighting of the top 10 positions in 47 equity markets averaged 48% from 1989 to 2011. In other words, higher concentrations have proven durable, historically.

We don’t accept the excuses of traditional value investors. Market concentration has been surprisingly common since the beginning of capital markets. Today, there are fundamental reasons why this is happening and we wouldn’t be surprised to see the S&P 500 become more concentrated –not less.

Javier Saldaña, Jr.

has dedicated his life to serving his community. As a firstgeneration American, he decided to enlist in the Nebraska National Guard to serve his country. He served for 13 years and earned a bachelor’s degree in criminology and criminal justice at the University of Nebraska Omaha. He continued his service as associate director, and then interim director, of UNO’s Office of Military and Veteran Services. He currently serves as the administrator for the Nebraska Department of Economic Development’s economic recovery division overseeing more than $800 million in funding to create inclusive economic impact in north and south Omaha.

You joined the Nebraska Department of Economic Development after serving as the interim director for UNO’s Office of Military and Veteran Services. What was it about the position with Nebraska DED that appealed to you?

My sense of calling and passion always falls back on the following question of “Are you making an impact in your community?” My service in the military and veteran advocacy spaces solidified that question, which is now my identity.

When I was approached with this one-of-a-kind opportunity, knowing that I would be leading a team in executing the investment of hundreds of millions of dollars into Nebraska’s most negatively economically impacted communities throughout the state, I knew right then and there that this position was my next career move.

If you could give your younger self a piece of advice, what would it be and why?

Seek out mentors who are willing to invest in you. Mentorship has played a vital role in navigating both successes and failures in my personal and professional lives. Don’t be afraid to seek them out, regardless of their job title.

Job swap: if you could do any other job, what would it be and why?

During my military and professional careers, I

had the opportunity to work with U.S. embassies abroad and was hooked on the work our ambassadors and foreign service officers had on their respective missions. Our nation’s global footprint and impact is unlike any other nation on earth. This spans anywhere from our economic might to cultural influences such as music and film.

BRITNI SUMMERS

How will Nebraska’s new paid sick leave law impact my business?

AThe Nebraska Healthy Families and Workplaces Act (the “Act”) requires businesses to provide paid sick time to eligible employees. Below I answer key questions about how the changes could affect your business.

Does my business have to provide paid sick leave to its employees?

Likely, yes. The Act applies to private employers with one or more employees. All employees working in Nebraska, including full-time, parttime, and temporary workers, must be provided paid sick leave. There is an exception for employees working less than 80 hours in Nebraska within a year and for certain federal railroad workers.

How much paid sick time are employees entitled to?

Employees must accrue one hour of paid sick time for every 30 hours worked. Annual caps are:

• Small businesses (less than 20 employees): 40 hours

• Larger employers (20 or more employees): 56 hours

When does paid sick leave begin accruing?

Paid sick leave must begin accruing at the start of employment or by October 1, 2025, whichever is later. Employees can use accrued sick leave as it is earned.

What situations qualify for using paid sick leave?

Paid sick leave may cover situations such as recovery from illness, injury, or health conditions; medical diagnosis, care, or treatment; care for family members; and public health emergencies, such as school closures or isolation due to disease exposure.

How does the Act define “family member”?

“Family member” includes not only immediate family such as spouses, children, and parents but also covers grandparents, grandchildren, siblings (biological, foster, adoptive, or step), and individuals with a close association equivalent to a family relationship.

What documentation can employers require for sick leave usage?

Employers may require reasonable documentation for absences longer than three consecutive workdays.

Can employers with current paid leave policies avoid offering separate paid sick leave?

Yes, if the existing policy meets or exceeds the Act’s requirements.

Are there penalties for noncompliance?

Yes. Employers face penalties up to $5,000 and lawsuits from employees.

What steps should employers take to ensure compliance with the Act?

Employers should work with employment attorneys to update and draft policies, implement systems for tracking leave accrual and usage, provide required notices, and train management to handle leave requests appropriately.

What have you seen as the most significant changes employers need to make?

From the policies I have reviewed, critical updates include expanding paid sick leave to part-time and temporary workers, allowing leave to accrue from the hire date and be used as earned, and meeting notice requirements.

The Act lacks clarity on details like PTO carry-over and payout upon termination, requiring legal expertise for policy review and drafting — again, consulting an attorney is advisable! Future legislation and regulations may also provide clarification to the Act.
