Small businesses can be affected by tech trends just as much as large corporations. The pandemic highlighted a few key things in tech: the importance for companies to have a strong online presence, the need for employers to adopt a remote or hybrid work environment, and the rise of citizen developers that are learning the inner workings of website and app development.

Citizen developers, otherwise known as people with little to no coding experience or other training in the information technology field, are surging in popularity. They are building applications to solve business problems by using no-code or low-code application development tools to create what they need for their business. They might have advanced digital skills and

a deep understanding of the company’s processes and goals, but overall, they are inexperienced and usually learn the technical side of things as they go. While there are significant opportunities with this approach, there are also some limitations. “[Low code or no code technology] allows them to easily create efficient business apps and/or automate workflows,” said Angela McGraw,

Whitney Fritzinger, director of AIM Institute said, “Its popularity is due to the ability to drag and drop components to create mobile or web applications. This way of creating applications is attractive because of the perceived ease of use and modular design. Applications can be built quickly

without writing code line by line.”

David Vogelpohl, vice president of growth at WP Engine, noted that while there is a recent increase in acceptance of this method, the low code or no code trend is not a new concept. WordPress is a product that utilizes this approach and business owners have been using the platform for quite awhile.

“WordPress currently makes up 43% of the web, and a huge part of that is because it democratizes the Web for all,” he said. “You can take a plugin or a theme, or a set of plugins and themes, and do a no-code website.

“You’ve been able to do that for a very long time. Additionally, the

general population is much more technical than we’ve seen in the past.

They’re much braver at doing things like making a website — they have sophisticated online presences there.

They’re becoming more digitally native — they weren’t born that way, but more people are that way today.”

However, while there are some benefits to using the low code or no code approach, there are some disadvantages as well.

“If you do it the wrong way, the tax is that you can’t fully customize your site,” Vogelpohl said. “What often happens is someone builds a brochure site and then really wants some unique functionality to

make the site stand out. But with a site builder, you often can’t customize their one-size-fits-all templates.”

That customization is important for many businesses, too. So, it is

important to determine what your online presence demands and find the right technology to suit.

And by not using code, the options available to a developer can be limited.

“To some degree, low-code and no-code technology represents the flexibility-usability tradeoff, so businesses should choose the technology which best fits their needs.”

Personalization

Capturing a customer’s attention is key to drawing them into a business. To help with that website personalization does just that.

“Personalization doesn’t necessarily mean every person who visits your site gets a unique experience, but

there are simple tricks that can make customers feel that way,” Vogelpoh explained. “Geo-based customization is a good example — changing the phone number or changing the background image based on where the visitors live (i.e. their IP address).

“There’s also context-based personalization. When you buy ads on Google, you can buy certain keywords, and Google will tell you which keyword a person searched for to find your site. Your website can detect that and can change the words on the page to match the word the person was searching for, so you only have to build one landing page that basically shows multiple variants of those keywords.”

This type of personalization gives customers more relevant content, which ultimately opens the window for

them to act and hopefully become loyal customers. Not to mention, it helps companies have a better understanding of who their customers are and creates less wasted sales time.

AIM’s Code School provides accredited courses in website development, including courses that provide the foundations of web development, in addition to more specific training on full stack Java specialization and JavaScript specialization and Python coding.

“AIM’s leadership academies provide mentoring, career coaching, leadership development, tech career exploration and career development to participants,” Fritzinger said. “By equipping tech leaders with skills for the future, businesses and organizations can achieve efficiencies and growth.”

Additionally, it is critical to keep security at the forefront of everything you choose to do in your website or app development. Citizen developers may not be as knowledgeable when it comes to online or app security, so investing in the right firewalls and other security mechanisms to ensure your confidential

information is kept safe is key.

If you are unsure of which options are best, talk to a professional and make sure you have what you need.

Without the right security, you could put your company and your clients at risk for cyberattacks, malware, or worse.

If you are not sure where to begin, McGraw said one of the first steps is to create employment opportunities for people that have the technology skills needed to grow your business.

“Work with local colleges to create internships for IT graduate students (cybersecurity, computer science, information technology, etc.),” she said. “Speak with a college rep and get a good understanding of what the students are learning and make sure their skills align with your IT needs.”

Vogelpohl said that if a small business decides to outsource and hire a company or agency to build a site, ask questions and make sure to maintain ownership of the site.

“One common problem I’ve seen is that some small businesses will hire companies that offer to build the entire website, host it, do all of the marketing, and get all the analytics set up,” he said. “But it’s all on their platform — every bit of it — even the phone number on your website is their phone number, which they redirect to your phone number.

“This is a trap that people should be aware of. Having ownership over your website means you have ownership over your digital destiny, and it’s critical. In the ‘we’ll do it all’ scenario, unfortunately,

you don’t have that ownership, and end up in a hostage situation that can be difficult to get out of.”

Keeping Up with Shifts

Technology continues to evolve, customer preferences are changing along with it. Thankfully, small businesses are no stranger to going with the flow, so when it comes to technology, it is important to stay as agile as possible.

“Small business owners need to make sure they have a platform that allows for high customization in the future but also the ability for non-developers to create custom content and experiences themselves,” Vogelpohl said.

Cultivating Next-Gen Talent FOSTER GROUP ADDS SIX NEW SHAREHOLDERS The Exit Planning Institute reports that 62% of Nebraska business owners have given “little to no attention to [an] exit plan.”

Forty-three percent have done “no planning at all.”

Foster Group, founded in 1989 by Jerry Foster, is an investment management and consulting firm that is, naturally, not leaving its future to chance. In May, Foster Group announced the recent addition of six new shareholders, including Omaha’s Stacie Neussendorfer, a senior lead advisor who brought 20 years of estate planning and wealth management expertise with her when joining the organization in 2018.

There are 24 shareholders spanning over three generations.

“Turnover is a distractor for employees as well as clients,” said Ross Polking, lead advisor - business development in Omaha, when asked about the significance of multi-generational leadership.

“Clients want long-term relationships with their financial advisory team.

We have structured our leadership and employee ownership to span multiple generations. So our clients can feel confident in our commitment to continuity.”

As Polking put it, Foster’s vision from the very beginning was to build an organization that would thrive perpetually and not be beholden to third-party influences or short-term financial performance.

“We wanted to be built on the shoulders of great people,” Polking explained.

“We have long believed in the mantra of ‘hiring people smarter than ourselves.’

That’s served our firm really well … we hire great people and let them thrive in their role.”

Its people are based out of offices in Omaha and west Des Moines. “[Our offices] were never meant to operate independently from one another,” Polking remarked. “We intentionally create dependencies across our offices. We think of Interstate 80 as a long hallway between our front doors.”

When a great fit in Foster Group’s communities is identified, Polking said, every effort is made to bring them onboard regardless of location.

“And remote work has made it easier to think more creatively about a team members’ physical location, which fosters even more collaboration between offices,” he added.

Polking indicated its talent-oriented journey, culminating recently in new shareholders, is built on a visionary and cultural foundation of care, competence and character that informs both engagement and a sense of shared ownership.

“We are very clear in our interview process about ‘The Foster Group Way,’” he said. “We offer accountability along the way. Team members stick around because they see congruence between what we say and how we behave.”

The best way to foster next-generation talent is to develop and keep good people, Polking emphasized.

Additionally, Polking said it has not experienced the slowdown in new clients that is commonly seen when financial markets are not working in investors’ favor.

“This industry is all about trust,” he explained. “No one is going to engage you to help with their financial life unless they have complete trust and confidence in you.

“The market and our economy present a lot of uncertainties and unsettledness right now. People recognize that they need help in making objective decisions,

while preserving and growing wealth.”

Perhaps further validation of its trust-inspiring team, Polking alluded to Foster Group being ranked among the top advisory firms in west Des Moines and Iowa

by AdvisoryHQ, a global organization that independently reviews firms from around the globe.

Such recognition, Polking said, creates the credibility that further draws prospective clients.

Future Forward When asked about current initiatives and priorities, Polking said that the rapid change associated with technologies means it always has initiatives around how to do things more consistently, effectively and efficiently.

“We continue to expand our offerings for both individuals and organizations,” he said. “People we serve are asking us to do more for them, and we are trying to meet these needs in smart ways.”

Polking stressed that it’s important to never lose the firm’s “boutique” feel.

ONE-STOP SHOPPING PROPELS GENERAL FIRE & SAFETY There are few guarantees in life and fewer guarantees in business – unanticipated, catastrophic incidents are one of them. Any business that’s around long enough will experience its share of storm damage, burst pipes and even a fire.

For the past six decades, General Fire and Safety of Omaha has made its name on minimizing the chances of a fire turning deadly, steadily expanding from fire extinguishers to sprinkler and other suppression systems. Today its one-stop model for sales installation and service has it well-positioned for future growth.

Service a Top Priority “It all boils down to customer service for us, and that customer service could be a family coming in and buying an extinguisher for their home,” said CEO Jason McDonald. “It could be a large high-rise that’s been in Omaha for 30 or 40 years looking to us to inspect and maintain the systems that they have. It’s making sure we follow up with thoroughness and always doing things by the book.”

This corporate philosophy has led the company to see steady growth

over the years both in client headcount and staff size. It’s also led them to new and larger quarters this year, a 16,000-square-foot facility that doubled the size of its previous digs, featuring space for up to 26 offices, a showroom, training and meeting space, a warehouse, a shop and prefabrication workspace for sprinkler and fire suppression pipe.

The company worked with DLR Group on the design of the facility, located at 13002 I St. “The front entrance is basically in the middle of the building, the core of the building, which has a showroom, a training room and a breakroom/event space. So, if we are hosting events or hosting clients, the heart of the building is going to be the setting.”

The new facility also reflects the diversity of the company’s current roster of products and services.

“Just like in any industry, technology is a big piece of this,” he said.

“On the fire sprinkler side of things, some of the new technology is nitrogen systems. Nitrogen inside of pipes helps maintain the pipes from rusting out so the pipes last much longer. That’s a huge deal for sprinkler systems.

“Fire alarm systems, right now, if you look at let’s say, a college campus,

the technology is now where all of the fire alarm systems in all of the buildings on a campus can connect remotely into one fire alarm graphic annunciator. So, one person at a security desk can see every fire alarm at all of the buildings across the campus.”

Corporate Accounts Lead Sales McDonald said nearly all of the company’s sales reside with corporate clients and of that, 60% is made up of service and inspection work and 40% is project-based. He said General Fire and Safety’s ability to install and service what it sells is a key differentiator and has spurred the company’s growth.

“The end-users and the clients that we have are so busy that for them

to have just one contact at General Fire has been absolutely imperative for us,” he said. “They don’t have time to think, ‘What company is doing this? What company is doing that?’ With us, they’re able to make one call and say, ‘Yeah, come in and take care of my fire alarm systems, my sprinkler system,’ and we take care of it. We pride ourselves on that.”

General Fire and Safety was founded in 1964 in Lincoln. Starting in the early 1970s, the firm grew to include locations in Omaha, Sioux City and Des Moines, all of which were sold off and became independent entities using the same name in the early 1990s.

McDonald joined the Omaha operation in 1999 as general manager, gained part ownership of the company by 2012 and by 2016 owned 100% of the company. In that time, employees have increased almost four times over, from 14 workers in 1999 to more than 50 today.

Alexis Perea was a driven college student, pushing her studies into a near-impossible timeline.

Perea found the motivation to not only succeed as the first generation in her family to go to college, but also finish her undergraduate degree in three years.

Today, the South Omaha native is a role model for women and students of color attending Bellevue University where she is senior director of admissions.

“When I was in college, I was told you are not going to be able to finish undergrad in three years,” she said. “It was actually my college adviser, ‘There is no way you’ll be able to do this.’ Well, yes, I can do this.

I’ll prove it and I’ll get it done.”

“As a first-generation student myself, I have the chance for me to relate to this population now, giving them the opportunity to complete Pathway to Success, which is a new student orientation and get comfortable with the college format prior to starting class.”

“My dad was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer while I was in college, so I felt I needed to show him that I can do something, even after he’s gone,” she said. “I ended up finishing my undergraduate degree in three years so he could see me walk for my bachelor’s degree.

“Then, I felt if he was still going, so should I. So, I pursued my master’s degree and he had the opportunity to see me graduate with my master’s degree as well. He passed away a few months after that.”

In between receiving her undergrad and graduate degrees, Perea joined the staff of her alma mater. She moved into the guild partnership position in 2019 and recently added admissions director to her title.

Through these positions, she gets to work with many students who remind her of herself, something she finds most rewarding.

“Most of our students at Bellevue University are first-generation students,” she said. “Many of these students have barriers coming in, such as communication, technology and just understanding the support

corporations on really up-scaling individuals,” she said. “Walmart, Disney World, Chipotle and Taco Bell, just to name a few, offer cap-funded degrees and some of them have debt-free programs. It gives their employees a real opportunity to go to school without financial barriers.”

As if her job didn’t provide enough opportunities to pay it forward, Perea has also found other ways to mentor youth, giving them an even earlier boost in school.

“My fulfillment is always through youth in the community,” she said. “I found the mentorship program through Partnership for Kids and I’m mentoring ninth graders back at South High School where I attended school.

“Youth just need an opportunity, like I did. There have been a bunch of them who remind me of myself. I don’t want to be the person telling them they can’t do something; they need the kind of support system that says, ‘You can do this. Don’t let anyone hold you back.’”
