Sprinkk CHAMPION FOR CANDY ENTREPRENEURS

Tessa Porter has been making waves ever since she opened her candy manufacturing facility Sprinkk in June. Relatively unheard of in Nebraska, Sprinkk serves as a space for entrepreneurs developing their own candy products.

Confectionary manufacturing may seem somewhat of a fantasy in Nebraska, but Porter is making entrepreneurship in the candy industry much more obtainable for local makers.

Filling the gap

“To go from the benchtop in a development lab, to full-scale production is commonly a really big jump, and that jump can be like upwards of 20,000 pounds of production, if not more,” Porter said. “The purpose of Sprinkk is to be a product development agency where we have the lab here in Omaha, and also a flexible manufacturer for contract manufacturing that allows us to do smallscale production.”

She said that offering this flexibility allows candy makers the opportunity to validate the process and take risks. Furthermore, production time is saved and

ingredient loss is significantly reduced.

So how does one go from concept to products on shelves?

“Our customers will come to us, maybe with an idea, or they may have the idea fully fleshed out,” Porter said. “We’ll help them figure out what that concept might actually be like, what the product brief would be. And once we have that, then we do the development here in-house.”

Here’s where the science comes in. Formulation of a product, like a gummy bear, goes through a process of testing flavors and colors, and can even get specific in the chemistry, such as the capacity of magnesium solutions, she said.

“We get to do fun development where we’re coming up with ideas and seeing how it works, and then we also have big problems that we’re trying to solve, such as ingredient interactions and understanding the chemistry and studying physics — how ingredients are going to flow through pipes in manufacturing,” Porter said.

Clients may be starting out anew, or others have their own manufacturing facility and are trying to figure out how to create a product on their existing equipment. Once testing and trials are complete, products are ready for retailers.

Maker community

Omaha is known to show up and support local retailers, and independent candy brands are no exception. Grocery store chains like Hy-Vee, for instance, give makers a platform to get their products in front of customers. Porter said once products hit shelves, confectioners can scale as the need grows.

“Being able to do those smaller tests, maybe not producing 20,000 pounds of product at a time, but maybe 100 pounds of product, and testing it and getting feedback and being able to adjust it will allow you to go into the larger market a lot more smoothly,” she said.

Porter has actively engaged with the community to build connections and network with startups and experienced investors.

“We have taken on investments here at Sprinkk, so I always enjoy talking with people in that space to learn,” she said. “Candy science isn’t something that a lot of people think about, let alone think about being local.”

She noted resources such as Kitchen Council in Council Bluffs and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (where she initially studied food science) offer assistance in starting brands with small production and help via food scientists. However, if a food entrepreneur is looking to develop candy, Sprinkk serves that niche.

Homecoming

Porter’s education led her to the American Association of Candy Technologists, where her passion for candy making bloomed. She interned at Hershey and pursued her master’s degree in food science studying sugar. She began her career as a candy scientist working for Ferrara Candy Co.

After she honed her expertise with national candy brands, she ultimately returned to her hometown Albion, Nebraska during the pandemic. A second production facility is now located there.

“A lot of it boils down to resources that I knew I had,” she said of her family being nearby. “This was incredibly fun to bring something as unique and novel as small-scale candy manufacturing back to the place where I grew up.”

Another aspect of that homecoming was the development of her own candy brand, Norma’s. Created at the request of her grandmother Norma who is now 90, Norma’s is a fruit snack that pays homage to her grandmother’s elderberry syrup recipe. Well-versed in gummy candy, Porter developed an elderberry ginger flavor and a strawberry rhubarb flavor, both with locally sourced ingredients like Midwestern honey.

“I kept making samples of it in my free time as I was starting up Sprinkk, and a brand strategy consultant caught wind of it,” she said. “She convinced me to turn that into an actual brand.”

What it all comes down to

The name Sprinkk, which is a play on the word sprinkle, encompasses what Porter has set out to do.

“I like sprinkles for the fact that they have no purpose other than to add joy to whatever they’re going on; they don’t taste

good, no nutritional value, they are purely there to spark joy, and I’ve always just enjoyed that about them,” she said.

The biggest joy for Porter is the end result of a customer’s vision coming to life.

“There’s the moment when their idea is made into a prototype for the first time, and getting to share that with our clients is just really exciting, that that idea that they’ve had in their head is now a physical thing,” she said. “That moment is something that drives us.

“Even when I worked in a large corporation producing candy on a large scale, that moment of production and seeing it on the shelf was really special to me. So we now get to create that moment and help other people experience that, that moment of just having their idea, and then having their idea be able to be in the hands of someone else that they can purchase it and enjoy it.”

No Shortcuts to Success

GRAEME EAGLESHAM

Just as there may be numerous ways to gauge the progress of one’s business, so are the sources of support that have contributed to those successes.

Understanding your audience

When Jennifer Lea originally founded Entry Envy, she was part of her own target market — a busy professional who valued a beautiful front porch but didn’t have time to fuss with it.

“What I have learned and been so pleasantly surprised by is that most of our customers truly experience joy from receiving a new decor kit each month,” Lea said. “They value feeling proud of their front porch, and it feels like a present to them.”

Women, she felt, are often busy taking care of everyone else.

“Our simple refill decor kits are, in a very small way, helping take care of other women and making them feel good about something they did for themselves,” Lea stated.

Entry Envy was born following a divorce, a full home remodel during

CYRUS JAFFERY

COVID-19, and a passion for increasing the number of women in trades and manufacturing — which drove a new venture.

“I started a second company called Hammers & Flip Flops to teach women how to tackle their own home improvement projects, and I have plans to create a pipeline of young women who may consider pursuing a career in the trades,” she said. “I am at the beginning of a lifelong quest to increase the percentage of women in the trades by a meaningful figure.”

She attributes her successes thus far to education through the likes of NMotion powered by Gener8tor, EO Accelerator through Entrepreneurs’ Organization, and various coaching programs.

“We are extremely active on social media and very in tune with our customers,” she said. “Being a startup allows us to be agile in the marketplace; however, the No. 1 ‘secret’ to our success is simply resilience.”

Lea said troubleshooting different things is a large part of the process.

“And each of those efforts requires time and money,” she said. “When they work, we do more of it and when they fail, we learn quickly and try something else.”

ENVY AND HAMMERS & FLIP FLOPS

Community support

Graeme Eaglesham, CEO of Future Kids, said he was pleasantly surprised when the nonprofit was awarded a grant from the Department of Education to deliver soccer programs in communities across the state.

“After the success of our after-school soccer program in North and South Omaha, this new project would see Future Kids work with youth in Kearney, Lexington and Nebraska City,” Eaglesham said.

Additionally, Future Kids is facilitating a new crime prevention program to provide evening and weekend soccer opportunities for youth in North and South Omaha.

“Future Kids provides access to high-quality soccer coaches for the youth in this area, and we are planning to create teams for the youth to experience club soccer without the price tag associated with traditional club soccer,” he stated. “This exciting new program will be launching this fall in partnership with Xtra Soccer Academy.”

In fact, it is also the quality of its coaching staff that Eaglesham attributes to its success thus far.

“Our coaches are able to provide a valuable and enjoyable soccer experience to programs and organizations,” he said. “When we are able to do that at scale, it has increased the demand for our service.”

Surprising growth

Initially, Cyrus Jaffery anticipated his eponymous firm — Jaffery Insurance & Financial Services — to add two new employees/contractors annually.

“We have far surpassed that number, growing to almost 120 employees/ contractors in our organization in the last four years,” Jaffery said. “We have seen a remarkable and sustained interest from highly qualified professionals who are eager to join us. This surge in talent wanting to be part of our journey was completely unexpected.”

No Shortcuts to Success

The impact has been far-reaching.

“With a larger and more diverse team, we have been able to accelerate our projects, hit revenue milestones that we never dreamed of, introduce new ideas, expand to other states, have amazing insurance company relationships, start new companies, and improve our overall productivity and creativity,” he noted.

He largely attributes the company’s successes to the willingness of its leadership team to step up and take on executive roles, ensuring smooth internal operations while allowing Jaffery crucial freedom to seek out new opportunities within its industry (such as podcasting for industry reach, starting new partnerships, and fine-tuning systems and processes).

“If you’re building a business or team, I would highly encourage you to find your leadership team and empower them daily, because their success will translate to yours,” he said. “It’s the best way to grow your organization at a rapid speed.”

Building trust

For Eryka Morehead, receiving the MBJ 40 Under 40 award in 2018 was a “complete surprise” and “a testament to the brand/reputation I had built.”

The founder and insurance strategist attributed two key factors to Collaborative Insurance Solutions’ growth, starting with a focus on brand reputation.

“The simple art of doing what you say you are going to do, when you say you are going to do it,” she said. “This builds trust and trust is key to long-term success in business. Delivering excellent customer service is just as important as the product or service your business delivers.”

The second driver, according to Morehead, is staying up-to-date on changes in the profession/field.

“Change is happening at an incredibly rapid rate,” she said. “Businesses can become obsolete quickly in this type of environment.”

Leaning in to the like-minded

Entry Envy’s Lea is grateful to have had many mentors with more experience than she did in entrepreneurship.

“While my professional career was 20 years in corporate America, that experience is helpful, but does not all translate to the entrepreneurship world,” she explained. “The wisdom of those who have come before me, owning their own business, is never underestimated. However … just like there are a thousand books on parenting, there is not one that teaches exactly how to raise your child.”

Similarly, she said there are a thousand books on how to run a business, be a better leader, manage a team and so on.

“But there is not one book that will tell you how to start and run your company to make it successful,” she said. “It is your responsibility as a business owner to be in a continuous state of learning, listening, living and following your intuition to build a successful business.”

Eaglesham of Future Kids said it is helpful to reach out to people who are doing what you want to do.

“Especially if there are people in your network that you already have a relationship with or can provide value to,” he said. “I try my best to learn from others that are on a similar path to myself.”

He, too, has had several mentors throughout the journey.

“This has helped in preventing problems arising at times, as well has

Find your leadership team and empower them daily, because their success will translate to yours. It’s the best way to grow your organization at a rapid speed.

having people to lean on during difficult situations,” Eaglesham remarked.

As an entrepreneur, Jaffery said, it can be a very lonely world.

“There are long days, nights and extremely high stress levels,” he said. “It greatly helps to connect with other entrepreneurs who are on the same journey as you, and also to find those who are ahead of you to leverage and learn from.”

At the end of the day, he said others have traversed this path before you and made mistakes from which you can learn, saving you time and money.

“Recognizing that others have overcome similar struggles can be reassuring,” Jaffery said. “I recall my second year in business when we had accrued nearly $500,000 in debt and needed $50,000 to meet payroll, with no funds available. I took a deep breath and drew

strength from the knowledge that a fellow entrepreneur had faced and surmounted the same challenge. These experiences ultimately make the journey more rewarding.”

Collaborative Insurance Solutions’ Morehead also suggested reaching out to other businesses with complementary services.

“See how you can align your efforts, so two plus two equals more than four,” she said. “This will give you the opportunity to engage a fellow entrepreneur, and benefit from a broader lens of perspective when looking at some of the issues or challenges you are facing.”

Morehead said it is likely they have skill sets that are different than yours, which is powerful when you can team up to solve your overlapping issues.

METRO ENTREPRENEURS GIVE THEIR BEST ADVICE

Resources and inspiration for new and growing businesses often come from unlikely places and overlooked or underrated spaces.

“One of the components of my success has been working with mindset coaches,” Lea said. “Mindset is everything when it comes to life, but the amount of mental resilience, confidence and unwavering belief that what you are building will work is unbelievable and cannot be underestimated.”

While coaches can be expensive: “There is no price you can put on mental health,” she said.

As Future Kids grew, Eaglesham indicated it became very important to organize tasks to get closer to their desired result.

“A resource that helped me was an app called Notion,” he said. “This helped keep me on track and have things organized, it acts as my second brain.”

He added that the app helps him to categorize many tasks and create checklists for different departments.

Jaffery isolated mentorships, social media groups and podcasting.

“Mentors can offer strategic advice, industry connections and emotional support, which are crucial for making informed decisions and staying motivated,” he said. “Despite these benefits, many business owners do not seek out mentors, missing the opportunity to leverage the wisdom and networks of seasoned professionals.”

He said podcasting is the fastest way to get amazing information from people that are way ahead of you in your game.

“I am listening to podcasts daily; I have my own podcast where I bring on my mentors to have a platform to share, but it’s selfish as well, as I learn from them on my podcast while they are sharing insights to our industry,” Jaffery added.

Social media groups provide a space for like-minded individuals to share experiences, offer recommendations and build a sense of community around a brand.

“It’s one of my favorite things to scroll through when I have time,” he said. “These groups facilitate direct interaction with customers, providing valuable feedback and creating opportunities for organic word-of-mouth promotion.”

Morehead encouraged seeking out others with pain points or issues that your business serves to solve.

“These people will be excited to participate in the conversation to build a solution for their need,” she said. “All too often, we try to guess what our client or customer needs. It is amazing what we can learn when we just ask them and listen.”

She also suggested subscribing to a system or methodology for running and operating one’s business.

“Whether it be EOS or another system, just having a system will help you go further faster,” Morehead said.

Tandem Works WHERE STRATEGY AND STORYTELLING MEET

Not many small business owners can say COVID-19 helped their company. But it’s something Tandem Works co-founders Vivian Kvam and Machaela Clark can, noting that COVID-19 highlighted their true passion.

Built on collaboration

Before Kvam opened the marketing consulting business with Clark, the duo worked together on commercial projects at a previous video and media production company Kvam co-owned. Both had a passion for storytelling through photography.

Following a divorce and exit from the company she co-owned, the duo cautiously merged their commercial services, ultimately creating Tandem Works in 2019.

But then the COVID-19 pandemic hit, causing a complete stop in the commercial photography contracts that had become their bread and butter.

“That was a real turning point for us, watching our friends, neighbors,

and other business owners within our community struggle,” she said. “We decided we weren’t just going to sit here watching our friends struggle.”

Survival strategy

The duo jumped into action to help other local businesses, starting with Barley’s Bar & Grill. Kvam recalls that it was on the eve of St. Patrick’s Day that restaurants were ordered to cease on-premises dining.

“We packed up our little blue wagon with a whiteboard and markers and went over there to start brainstorming,” she said.

The first order of business was figuring out how to offload all the perishable items that were bought in preparation for St. Patrick’s Day.

Barley’s ownership decided to donate corned beef dinners to local fire and police departments.

“We took pictures and used them to promote stories that challenged people to do the same,” Kvam said.

Next, they helped the company set up an online ordering system and developed a mobile beverage drop-off campaign.

“They would drive to a neighborhood and it was like the ice cream man, but with beer and specialty drinks,” she said.

At one point they were even selling the jugs of the housemade ranch.

Kvam reports that Barley’s is still thriving in the post-pandemic world and that the experience pushed the duo to reconsider their business model.

“We help people [make it happen] when they have these really great ideas,” she said.

Maximizing assets

Even before the pandemic, there were subtle cues hinting at the company’s evolution.

“What we noticed is that we would deliver these wonderful creative assets, but companies often weren’t sure how to use them strategically,” she said. “That led us down this path of helping them figure out how to use their creative assets.”

Today the duo operates in a few different spaces, the first being strategic planning. This space looks different for every client; some clients want a long-term strategic plan while others want help with a key issue, such as culture. No matter the topic, clients receive an action plan at the end of the experience to guide them to the desired outcome.

“We also do a lot of coaching for new entrepreneurs and business owners, which is more like day-to-day operations,” she said.

The final service is community building. Essentially organizations can hire Tandem Works to facilitate conversations with communities to help determine what an organization is doing well, and where it could improve.

“For the Iowa West Foundation we designed and created the Imagine Hours, which was a multi-month project that turned into a three-year project,” Kvam said.

The Foundation then contacted experts in the identified areas — economic development, education, healthy families, and placemaking — to dive into the data and provide recommendations. The information was used to update the foundation’s strategic plan in 2023. A similar model was used for Iowa Western Community College’s Campus Conversations, which influenced their strategic plan.

“The connecting thread is using storytelling in strategic ways to align people,” Kvam said.

Healthy relationships

Through it all, fostering a healthy and honest partnership has been the most challenging, and worthwhile, investment.

“It’s not always easy, and we don’t always agree,” Kvam said. They utilize the Entrepreneur Operating System’s Same Page Meeting

method to re-align each month and discuss any concerns, frustrations, successes, and goals.

“That has saved us more than once,” she said. “When you’ve hit 30 days and something is still grating on you, or you haven’t been able to express something, knowing that there’s a dedicated meeting time where we can do that … it’s huge.”

Understanding each other’s differences and utilizing accountability charts to divvy up tasks has also helped.

“Michaela always talks about how growing up she did her homework on the bus. I did my homework two weeks in advance,” Kvam said.

“I’ve had to learn that she’s going to get it done, it just might not be on my timeframe, and she’s learned to ask when I would feel most comfortable with it being done … I give a due date now that’s way less comfortable for me.”

BRIDGING THE GAP IN OMAHA’S HOME CARE SERVICES

It all started with their grandmother who suffers from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and needed assistance with daily activities like cleaning and shopping. Despite being nurses, cousins Shanae Nared, LPN, and Breonna Kellogg, RN, realized they would require extra help to take care of her due to their full-time jobs and other family responsibilities.

However, they found it difficult to find the right in-home aide services in Omaha. In January, Nared and Kellogg, along with their long-time friend and fellow nurse Sheree Nelson, RN, launched Caring Expertise Homecare, LLC. The trio, with their extensive nursing backgrounds, had a shared goal to address community’s needs by providing comprehensive in-home care services. Each co-founder brought unique experiences: Nared, chief executive officer, had 18 years in long-term care focusing on Alzheimer’s and geriatrics, Kellogg, chief operations officer, had a decade in hospital, long-term care and traveling nurse services and Nelson had over 18 years in home care and clinical education.

Nared said she had dreamed of starting a home care service for 15 years, aiming to make companionship, transportation, medication management, personal care, meal preparation, and shopping more accessible.

Through their nursing experiences, each co-founder had developed an awareness that when patients are discharged by the hospital, “they often do not need medical home health care and need non-medical home care services to feel safe at home,” Kellogg said.

Meeting workforce challenges

The home care industry faces a severe workforce shortage, exacerbated by the increasing elderly population. According to a 2023 report by the National Association of Home Care and Hospices and Home Care Association of America, the home care workforce has declined since 2020. This shortage is expected to grow as the population aged 65 and older doubles in the next decade.

The AARP Policy Institute highlights the impact on families, with 69%

of working family members having to adjust their schedules or take unpaid leave to help provide care.

Kellogg said this is where Caring Expertise Homecare steps in to alleviate these pressures by offering “tailored care plans,” emphasizing the importance of individualized care, allowing families to feel comfortable bringing a loved one home, knowing their needs will be fulfilled.

“Regardless of whatever illness, chronic illness, disability, or even if they’re just aged, there’s a void,” Kellogg said. “Basically, we want to keep the clients at home with their loved ones away from the nursing homes and so they don’t feel like they are a burden on their family.”

Overcoming business hurdles

Starting a new business can come with challenges. Nelson explained that obtaining waivers from the state to care for clients at home is a lengthy process, taking up to 90 days for full assessment and service initiation. Finding the right caregiver for each client is also crucial to ensure that “everyone feels comfortable with each other.”

Another challenge is managing caregiver hours when Caring Expertise Homecare clients are temporarily hospitalized.

Once a client is on board there can be a separate set of issues that cause service delays.

“Their income may be too high,” Nelson said. “So then, that puts them in a position where they either get an insurance policy or there has to be some sharing of costs.”

Supporting community

Despite these challenges, the trio has learned to navigate the business side to support their community effectively and stand out from the competition in providing jobs.

“We actually pride ourselves on less is more,” Nelson said. “We pay our staff more because we have low overhead.”

Recently, they garnered the top spot in the Midlands African Chamber’s Pitch Black competition, boosting their recognition, momentum and awareness in the community.

“There’s definitely a void for the services we offer that need to be filled,” Nelson said. Caring Expertise Homecare is the only Black-owned homecare services agency in Nebraska.

Nared said the agency plans to expand its services, including seeking approval to work with children and open a child care center to help staff.

“They can still go out there, earn an income and not worry about their children needing sitters,” Nared said.

The agency strives to increase community awareness of their services through initiatives like a backpack giveaway for children, visibility at local parades and plans for a grand opening soon.

“We are big on community advocacy,” Nared said. “We just have a lot of big goals and we’re reaching for the stars and here to help.”

Individualized Approach

Now that it’s officially the start of school, families have likely made new child care arrangements for the school year. Whether it is a relief for parents who had to cobble together camps and favors from family members, or a stressor due to the cost, employers in the Midlands are showing up for the parents on their staff to ease the burden.

There is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all approach, said Diane Temme Stinton, owner and CEO of Lincoln-based TMCO. The contract metal manufacturing company became proactive in assisting parents on its staff of 230 employees by utilizing the services of Lincoln Littles, an organization advocating for quality care and education for Nebraska children. The child care program at First-Plymouth Church served as a reliable resource for TMCO employees, but when the program was forced to close its doors after 55 years this past March, it led the family-owned business to reassess its approach.

“We do want to encourage families to make the best decisions for themselves and their children,” Stinton said. “What we do now is we frontload dependent care [flexible spending] accounts. So we give each family $1,000 and then they’re free to take that to whatever provider or whatever type of care that they need for their dependents.”

Stinton said the dependent care FSA allows TMCO to support employees financially for whatever needs they may have as caretakers. When surveying team members about their needs, respondents noted child care costs were either high or they were relying on free care from family members.

“I was just shocked at that point to learn that there was no middle ground,” she said.

Support

Not only are needs varied among parents, but employees will always be at different life stages with their families, including those just starting to have children.

“There’s no wait time for parental leave,” said Brooke Denker, senior business partner at Arbor Day Foundation. “A lot of companies will have a set waiting period before you’re eligible, but you’re eligible with us day one if you’re having a baby, and we offer 12 weeks of paid leave to birthing parents and two weeks of paid leave to non-birthing parents.”

Denker said Arbor Day Foundation includes a hybrid schedule with individualized flexibility so that parents can work around their family schedules. Additionally, the organization offers a dependent care FSA and reimburses the cost of shipping breast milk when an employee travels.

“We support people no matter what their stage of life is, sometimes you’re a caregiver for a parent — everyone’s life looks a little bit different,” she said. “We just offer people the flexibility they need to make sure they can take care of what’s happening at home and not be solely focused on how to work.”

Shawna Matz, chief people officer at Veridian Credit Union, said the credit union’s benefits package has been the most popular perk for parents on staff.

“Working parents are most attracted to benefits that give them the flexibility and resources they need to support their family,” she said. “At Veridian, they find that in generous vacation and retirement packages, 12 paid holidays, paid volunteer time and a wellness program that offers up to 100%-paid health insurance premiums, dental and vision coverage. Many positions are also eligible for a hybrid work schedule.”

The impetus for a need

Taking a broader look at why there is a spotlight on work/life balance for parents, Elizabeth Everett, deputy director and public policy manager at First Five Nebraska noted that 74% of Nebraska children under the age of 6 have all parents in the workforce. Additionally, Nebraska ranks No. 6 nationally for children under 6 being raised by a single mother in the workforce.

“Those statistics would show hopefully we would have an infrastructure in place to support these working parents, but unfortunately like other states, we just don’t have that,” Everett said.

A 30% turnover rate in the child care industry and a decrease of in-home child care programs (which account for two-thirds of all child care programs in Nebraska) contribute significantly to an increased need for child care solutions.

“The Bipartisan Policy Center did a report that showed if all children with parents in the workforce needed access to care, around 20,000 children or so would not have access to care,” she said.

In order to avoid any pitfalls with a parent having to miss work due to lack of child care, employers should assess what would be more helpful for their own team.

Informed decisions

Culture, company size and cost are all important factors to consider when creating a work environment that helps employees thrive. Before making any changes, each of these organizations had one commonality: they did their research.

Both TMCO and Arbor Day Foundation partnered with Lincoln Littles to better understand their needs such as distributing a survey to their employees.

After discovering what some parents were doing to get their children cared for, Stinton knew she could not stand idly by.

“I was seeing employees that were making decisions for their families that weren’t necessarily in the best interest of their family,” she said. “I heard about employees that were taking their kids way out of the way because that’s just where they could get in or having to pay so much.”

Arbor Day Foundation maintains open communication with employees with its annual engagement survey.

“We score really highly on our individual needs section for people having the flexibility that they need, and we’re just constantly asking for feedback,” Denker said.

Individualized Approach

WHAT

WORKING

PARENT SUPPORT LOOKS LIKE IN NEBRASKA

We support people no matter what their stage of life is, sometimes you’re a caregiver for a parent — everyone’s life looks a little bit different.

Going a step further, the organization brings that transparency to the recruitment process.

“I think people are requesting that flexibility, but I think it’s also a very vulnerable thing to ask or to talk about in a recruitment process, and so we try to be the ones to lead that conversation and really tell people what that looks like so they don’t have to feel nervous or curious or scared, because I think that’s the hardest part of switching to a new job, is understanding what that actually looks like,” she said.

Consistent feedback is crucial in getting employees the benefits they need rather than wasting time and money on a benefit they do not use.

“We’re intentional about gathering feedback and suggestions from our employees on Veridian’s benefits package, and several of our benefits have come about or been enhanced as a suggestion from employees,”

Matz said.

One result of that feedback was the start of an adoption assistance program. Those eligible are reimbursed up to $5,000 per child (up to $10,000 total) for qualified adoption-related expenses.

Another factor in attracting and recruiting for Veridian is its Best Place for Working Parents designation, a program providing a network of businesses across the U.S. that adopt policies to help working parents.

“We elected to complete a confidential online self-assessment that analyzes our benefits against the top 10 research-backed policies proven to benefit working parents,” she said. “To receive the designation, businesses must offer a variety of those policies, including company-paid health care coverage, paid time off, parental leave, flexible hours and more.”

Getting creative

Not every business has the resources to provide benefits financially, but that doesn’t mean business owners can’t offer support to parents juggling responsibilities.

Flexible hours, remote work, avoiding scheduling meetings first thing in the day and encouraging vacation day use to avoid burnout are all no-cost benefits. At Arbor Day Foundation, Denker said the organization offers

– BROOKE DENKER, SR. BUSINESS PARTNER, ARBOR DAY FOUNDATION

employees multiple family events throughout the year to encourage a personal connection to work.

When searching for the right benefits for parents, employers may be worried about other employees seeing it as unfair treatment. Stinton said you may be surprised at their reaction.

“When we first started, we announced what we were doing, and the response was just overwhelmingly positive, even from the employees that weren’t going to benefit from this,” Stinton said. “And I think it’s because people as a whole, like in our community, just recognize the burden and the challenges that are on young families and how stressful that is to find care. When you care about families and you care about community, it really speaks to a culture.”

She said innovative thinking and being bold enough to try something new is a great means to building the right culture. While going as far as building an onsite day care is out of the question for many businesses, these organizations encourage those interested in finding a new solution to do what works best for their individual needs.

“Our solutions might not be the best solution for you, but we have found what works really well for our team, our people, their needs,” Denker said. “But at the end of the day, it comes down to treating people like people and making sure that, yes, we always have to meet business objectives.”

Other services can be provided when the unexpected happens.

Everett noted companies can use the services of organizations like Bright Horizons, which offers backup child care.

In the end, retaining and recruiting quality employees is always at the top of the list for employers.

“Accommodating the unique needs of our employees with a generous benefits package isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s good business sense,” Matz said. “We want all employees to feel comfortable bringing their entire, genuine selves to work. They’re more able to do that when they feel supported.”

KEY TIPS FOR CHOOSING AND MAINTAINING YOUR HVAC SYSTEM

As the weather changes, it’s a prudent time for homeowners to consider their heating and air conditioning systems. The true cost of owning an HVAC system extends beyond the purchase price to include maintenance and operational expenses. With heating and cooling being significant energy expenditures in a typical home, maintaining these systems is crucial for both efficiency and costeffectiveness.

Pre-Purchase Considerations

Before buying a new system, an energy audit is advisable. This assessment can reveal energy inefficiencies and help determine the right size and type of system needed. Some utility companies offer audits, but for more detailed analysis, hiring a specialist may be necessary. Weatherizing your home—by updating caulking, weather stripping, and insulation—can also reduce the system size required, potentially lowering costs.

When selecting an HVAC system, it’s important to compare different brands and models. Considerations should include not just the initial cost but also energy efficiency, which affects long-term operating costs. Look for systems that exceed minimum energy efficiency standards, as they often come with additional benefits like cash rebates or tax incentives.

properly. It’s essential to get detailed estimates and understand the scope of the work, including any additional necessary services like ductwork installation.

Contractors should provide a follow-up service to check the system post-installation. Many offer service contracts, but it’s vital to evaluate these against the warranty that comes with the system. The warranty should clearly outline what’s covered, including parts and labor, and any service contract should complement, not duplicate, this coverage.

Maintenance and Repairs

Routine maintenance is key to extending the life of your HVAC system and ensuring it runs efficiently. Regular checkups by a qualified technician can help catch potential issues early. For cooling systems, spring or early summer is ideal, while heating systems should be checked in the summer or fall. Simple maintenance tasks like replacing or cleaning filters can also be done by homeowners. For any repairs or system replacements, it’s advisable to get multiple estimates to ensure fair pricing and quality work. Understanding the contractor’s licensing and insurance requirements is also essential for legal and financial protection.

Choosing the Right Contractor

Selecting a qualified contractor is as crucial as choosing the right system. Ensure that any contractor you hire is an authorized dealer for the manufacturer, which often means they have met specific standards and are trusted to install and maintain the product
