SOMETHING IN the Water

FOUNDERS LOOK BACK ON BUSINESS ETHICS ALLIANCE’S SUCCESS

During the formative years of the Business Ethics Alliance – a period when the organization was little more than a lofty idea – longtime business leader and early adopter Bob Bates coined a phrase that has stuck in the minds of the group’s founders ever since.

“Bob had recently retired from Lincoln Financial Group and made the comment, ‘There’s something in the water in Omaha. There’s just something different about the way we conduct business in Omaha. There’s a palpable moral compass in business practice in our community today and we should foster it and not lose it,’” said Dr. Anthony Hendrickson, dean of the Heider College of Business at Creighton University.

Product of the Times

Bates’ rallying cry was both an affirmation of current business culture and a warning for the future. The Business Ethics Alliance was conceived in an era of an unprecedented business scandal. Just a few years before, Enron became the poster child for corporate greed, its malfeasance enabled by the misdeeds of its accounting firm Arthur Andersen.

The two sat atop a long list of chicanery revealed in the early 2000s, from the well-recognized Adelphia and WorldCom to the more easily forgotten Bayou Hedge Fund Group and RefCo. And, true to Bates’ point, these only served as harbingers for even more catastrophic incidents ahead in the form of Lehman Brothers, AIG, Bear Stearns, Washington Mutual and one Bernard L. Madoff. Troubled by the direction business interests in America and abroad appeared to be taking, Beverly Kracher, now chairholder

and professor of Business Ethics and Society at Creighton University, decided to take bold action.

“I love to think, talk, read and write about business ethics,” Kracher said. “I liked teaching undergraduate and graduate students, but was yearning for a way to bring positive, practical ethics education to our greater Omaha business community. Our interim dean at the time, Dr. Debbie Wells, provided me with an opportunity to fulfill that desire.

“For about a year, I met with and listened to business leaders. Enron and other corporate scandals had happened a couple of years before and were on everyone’s minds. Together with professionals like Butch Ethington at Union Pacific and Dennis O’Neal at First National Bank of Omaha, we created some initial ethics programming.”

The idea struck a nerve with other leaders, recalled Hendrickson, who were eager to preserve the ethical culture of business in Omaha.

“As a Jesuit institution, we have championed a moral and ethical approach to business for decades,” he said. “In fact, we’ve had a required course in business ethics since the founding of our College of Business in 1920. So it was natural for us to be part of this effort.

“Bob Bates helped to shape our founding by connecting us with the Better Business Bureau, led by Jim Hegarty, and the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce, led by David Brown. Together we formed a small nucleus of people to help champion the idea.”

Brown, now retired, agreed with the desire the founding members shared to help preserve Omaha as a haven for ethical business practice amid the sea of scandal.

“We were intrigued by the fact that we weren’t seeing those

kinds of ethical issues displayed in companies that were in Omaha,” he said. “If Omaha can be a bit of an island, we thought, then maybe we should try and put a program in place that would provide resources to businesses to make that happen in their companies and show how important being ethical is to a profitable and successful business.”

Programming and Resources

The Business Ethics Alliance’s programming through the years has consistently reflected this goal. Since the very beginning, education and resources have been the group’s stock and trade, putting the tools for fostering an ethical workplace culture into the hands of businesses regardless of size.

“I think the products we put out there were really designed to provide an ethics toolbox to smaller and medium-sized companies,” Brown said. “These companies probably didn’t have the budget to create a whole ethics department like some of the larger companies did but they still needed some of that expertise in those tools so that they could make sure their culture was one of fostering ethical decision-making in the company.

“I think another big part was the lessons that we learned from challenges and the responses that we saw from around the country. When we instituted CEO breakfasts and lunches around the educational piece, a lot of that was geared around current events that were happening around the world. Having experts at the table who could walk people through that helped those company leaders think through how they would solve a similar problem.”

Kracher said in the early days, programming was more by feel, a process of “throwing programming at the wall to see what would stick,” but by gathering input and listening to the needs of the business community, presentations became more targeted and refined.

“Attendance grew and grew,” she said. “The Alliance always did surveys and we found the programming addressed the moral isolation that people felt when they were trying to do right and get their organizations to do right. These people were now sitting in a room where others felt the same way. As a result, public conversations about ethics in business were normalized.”

Another component of the group’s sustained popularity was the way it has deftly and consistently avoided certain pitfalls that might have derailed its status as a resource for companies.

“The community came to realize that the Alliance wasn’t trying

to judge or cast blame. That wasn’t the tone,” Kracher said. “We talked about the fact that none of us were saints and we weren’t judge or jury. The Alliance is just a group of business people who strive to do less harm and do good in business. The Alliance provides tools and resources to be better ethical business leaders and run better, more ethical organizations.”

Staying Current

Most satisfying of all to the founders is the way the Business Ethics Alliance has evolved with the times, offering relevant training and programming without straying from its core mission.

“The establishment of the Business Ethics Alliance’s cadre, which has occurred over the last few years, is an effort to bring together experts in ethics and education and business from both the for-profit and nonprofit sectors from around the world,” said Jim Hegarty, president & CEO of the Better Business Bureau Midwest Plains.

“The purpose of the cadre is to utilize the members’ intelligence, their influence and their efforts and it creates synergies that we wouldn’t be able to create on our own. This is a group of people that are meeting consistently to be sure that the Alliance is addressing the most critical issues on the subject of ethics.”

Hegarty said the success of the organization is not just a source of personal and local pride but has also become widely recognized as a program in a class by itself.

“The international and the national recognition that the Alliance has garnered for its unique approach makes it a true one-of-akind organization,” he said. “Better Business Bureaus from all over America have come to Omaha to witness and participate in Business Ethics Alliance programming because they are so impressed with the partnership that has been created for the benefit of promoting business ethics and marketplace trust.”

As satisfied as he is about what the Alliance has accomplished thus far, Hegarty is even more excited about what the organization will do in the future. He said the Alliance has cast a mold for certain standards of behavior that have become even more deeply ingrained in the local business culture.

“I think every business should be taking the time to sit down and ask themselves, first of all, ‘have we been thoughtful about establishing core values for our business?’ ‘Are we setting the tone for those values at the top?’” he said.

“We’re in an incredibly competitive marketplace right now for

employees and I think that employees want to know that they’re working for companies that have been thoughtful about the ways they approach the subject of ethics, the ways in which they embrace the core values of their company and how that results in the sort of culture those employees are embedded in.”

Looking Forward

Hendrickson said the future holds much of the same for the Business Ethics Alliance, as ethical issues are never going to go away.

“Ethical business practice is always in vogue for those of integrity,” he said. “Everyone wants to do business with people they can trust and be confident that their associates are being transparent and above-board. The relevance of this organization is always going to be present, primarily because we all need to be reminded that it truly is about ‘How you play the game.’”

Kracher agreed, saying the issue of ethics in the workplace is as important as ever, perhaps more so.

“There have been different iterations with some different words, but the mission and vision have always been the same: Build leaders, strengthen organizations and elevate greater Omaha through positive, practical business ethics,” Kracher said. “Even with a global economy, we still do business with people down the street, so we need to ensure that our cities have strong ethical business climates.

“The way to do that is to make sure business communities identify and articulate their core values and keep them front of mind. Just like in individual companies, a business community can showcase its values and teach them over and over and over until they become second nature in that community.”

The 15th Anniversary A TIMELINE OF THE BUSINESS ETHICS ALLIANCE

Hello!

My first encounter with the Alliance was in 2014, shortly after I moved here. I heard that the events sponsored by the Alliance were excellent resources for networking and as an educator, I was also attracted by the content. It was there I first saw Dr. Beverly Kracher, our founder, in action and I was hooked! Her style, her charisma, and her way of engaging the speakers appealed to the educator in me although it would be many years later before I would meet Dr. Kracher. Along the way I continued to attend Alliance events here and there not knowing that I might one day lead this incredible organization.

When I first started at the Alliance in December of 2022 as the vice president for leadership development, I was at a crossroads in my career, having just come off an almost 25 year run in higher education teaching, and in administration. In that career I had been bullied and gaslighted more than once. I saw ethical dilemmas and ethical decision-making play out regularly. Organizations and people I trusted let me down and organzations I never expected to trust earned my loyalty. I saw

Shortly after I began at the Alliance, the opportunity to lead the organization as the interim director arose. I saw in that period a talented and still growing “teenaged” organization with much to offer and programs yet to be realized. After much consideration, and many conversations with staff and the board, I pursued the executive director’s position and was offered it in March 2023.

This past year has been one of change, amazement and hope! Dr. Kracher has been nothing but gracious, a champion, and mentor. She is the Alliance’s biggest cheerleader! Our governing board has been, well, on board with my vision for the Alliance’s future and I am grateful every day for their insights and support. The staff and partners I work with to make the magic happen daily are second to none and none of the last year would be possible without them. Finally, business and community partnerships comprising the Alliance’s foundation make it a unique and highly innovative organization; there is no other organization like the Business Ethics Alliance anywhere!

Please join me in looking back at a few key highlights from the Alliance’s 15 year history, and celebrate many more years of ethical dialogues to come! Because ethics matter, always.

Initial business ethics programs were tested for interest in the local community, and a larger strategic committee met regularly to create the structure needed to run business ethics programs long-term.

March 2008

The Greater Omaha Alliance for Business Ethics was legally established as a stand-alone, independent, not-for-profit entity with three founding partners: the Heider College of Business, the Greater Omaha Chamber, and the Better Business Bureau Midwest Plains. A fourth partner, the Greater Omaha Business Community, communicates that the organization is for-and-by the business community.

Annual surveys regarding organizatioanl ethics and values are launched. Five core business values are identified: accountability, community responsibility, financial vitality, integrity, and moral courage.

A Q&A with BUSINESS ETHICS ALLIANCE CONTRIBUTORS

SHANNON UNDERWOOD OPERATIONS MANAGER, BUSINESS ETHICS ALLIANCE

“I was interested in working for the Business Ethics Alliance because diversity, equity, and inclusion are essential to me. When I learned there was an organization in Omaha that educates other organizations on the importance of DEI, I was immediately interested in becoming part of this team that genuinely cares about our community and those in it. We all have to come together to be truly diverse.

The people of Omaha keep me working with the Business Ethics Alliance. I enjoy going into the office each and every day, knowing we are making a difference. I have met many wonderful people, from big organizations to small nonprofit organizations in the Greater Omaha area, who are very passionate about our community. The Business Ethics Alliance is, by far, the greatest employment decision I have ever made.”

TRACEY FRICKE FOUNDER, OCCASION DESIGNED

“I have been a huge fan and supporter of the Business Ethics Alliance since its inception. Bev Kracher was one of my favorite professors in my Master of Business Administration program at Creighton. Bev opened my eyes to the world of discovering and discussing ethics in business and the importance of ethical decision-making in the business world. As the Alliance’s founding leader, her vibrant spirit motivated our community to be involved in this important movement.

Ethics are crucial for the success and sustainability of businesses, that is a fact, and the Business Ethics Alliance continues to remind us of that. Promoting ethical behavior and keeping the conversation open around ethical considerations is essential for maintaining trust with stakeholders and fostering a positive culture. It’s a reminder that ethical decision-making should always be at the forefront of our minds as we navigate the complex world of business. Happy 15th anniversary!”

KRISTI ANDERSEN FOUNDER, KRISTI ANDERSEN COMMUNICATIONS

“Doing what’s right and treating people with respect was instilled in me from a young age by my parents and many teachers and mentors along the way. The Business Ethics Alliance is filled with like-minded people who live by those same principals. Working with individuals who truly want to see all people in our community thrive is inspiring and pushes me to be a better leader.”

STUART CHITTENDEN FOUNDER, SQUISHTALKS

“I first encountered the Business Ethics Alliance a decade ago through one of its signature events, the ‘Mind Candy’ series where, over breakfast or lunch, a variety of business people from across the community engaged in thorny yet relevant ethical quandaries. These raised the kinds of issues, challenges, and opportunities facing businesses and the communities in which they operate, but were often not centered in executive level and day-to-day conversations, instead being relegated to the fringes of business-related considerations.

That vibrant blend of the theoretical and the highly practical was and remains appealing and relevant. As contemporary social changes have forced workplaces, industries, individuals, and communities to wrestle directly with issues about the ‘How?’ ‘Who?’ ‘What?’ and even ‘Why?’ of work, the range of discussions that the Business Ethics Alliance fosters have become only more critical to Omaha.”

BLAKE PETERSON WEALTH ADVISOR, KEYSTONE FINANCIAL SERVICES

When you attend a BEA event, you truly never know who you are going to sit next to and learn from. They provide a space for open discussion about relevant ethical topics and whether you are the CEO of a Fortune 500 company, or the teller at a local bank, your opinions are welcomed and valued equally.

The fulfillment I get from these events is so immense that I felt compelled to share it beyond the event walls. I approached the BEA about starting a podcast to bottle up some of those valuable lessons from their programming and provide them to a global audience at their leisure. That is how ‘Business Ethics, Walk the Talk’ was created and now has thousands of downloads across 34 countries.

Whether you’re a founder, C-suite executive, manager, or boots-on-the-ground employee, ethical dilemmas will arise in your work. The Business Ethics Alliance offers an excellent platform to discuss these issues, ensuring you and your workforce are prepared when they do.”

CJ BRACCIA INTERN, BUSINESS ETHICS ALLIANCE

“The thing that first attracted me to the Business Ethics Alliance is their commitment to the local community. I felt that the Alliance really wanted to better the local community and help organizations of all sizes and purposes, which to me was admirable. In a similar vein, the community is what keeps me connected to the Alliance. The Alliance has formed a tight knit group all working towards the same goal, a more ethical Omaha.”

Leaders in Ethics

A GLIMPSE INTO THE BUSINESS ETHICS ALLIANCE BOARD

Members of the governing board of the Business Ethics Alliance are powering the programs, events, and opportunities that support core values to lift our communities — accountability, integrity, moral courage, financial vitality and community responsibility.

Mark Pohl is both the chair of the Alliance’s governing board and programs and planning manager of OPPD’s utility operations.

“My earliest involvement with the Alliance was over 10 years ago when I was asked to participate in a panel discussion at the Omaha Chamber’s Young Professional Summit,” Pohl explained.

Facilitated by founding Executive Director, Bev Kracher, Pohl recalled how the panel also included Borsheims, Phenomblue and Union Pacific execs who shared personal experiences, the positive impacts of celebrating moral courage, and the repercussions and cascading effect when moral courage is lacking.

“I felt inspired by the courage that was demonstrated by the panelists who stayed true to their moral compass, even when it came at personal cost,” he stated.

Pohl serves as chief of staff for OPPD’s largest business division, leads strategic development and supports its leadership team.

When asked further about motivations for joining the board, Pohl said the Alliance plays an important role in the community by tackling tough, relevant topics and providing spaces for multiple perspectives.

“As a frequent attendee at Alliance events, I would always walk away from those programs with a tool, approach or question to consider,” he said.

During Leadership Omaha Class 40, Pohl reflected on where to invest time, talent and treasure.

“It was clear to me that I wanted to support an organization that was helping drive growth in our community on such an important topic,” he added. “The armchair quarterback in all of us can identify the business decision gone wrong. It’s much more difficult to be the person tasked with making the decision in the moment.”

Pohl noted Alliance leadership presents a way to channel his passion for making a difference in the community by equipping leaders at all levels to make the best decisions.

“I’m most proud of the way we have navigated change as an organization, and the lessons we have learned along the way,” he said. “Celebrating 15 years as an organization is a major milestone accomplishment and something that deserves celebration … We can’t predict what ethical dilemmas businesses will face over the next 15 years, but the Alliance will be there to provide support and guidance to companies as they navigate those challenges.”

A Morally-Courageous Village

When Board Vice Chair Madeline Moyer attended an Alliance event over 10 years ago, she was hooked. Today, Moyer is SVP, diversity and inclusion officer/market manager with Security National Bank. Her notable community achievements include serving on the committee that selected Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer.

Moyer recalled her early Alliance impressions, noting how she always left with great information.

“The content shared how we could all be ethical leaders and make Omaha a more ethical place to live and work — met so many amazing leaders in our community,” she said.

In fact, Moyer said joining the board was an “easy commitment for me to make.”

“I believe strongly in following your moral compass, we all have a set of principles and values. The Business Ethics Alliance operates on these guidelines,” she said. “To be a part of helping to push this message out was an easy ‘yes’ for me.”

Moyer was also part of the committee that selected the Alliance’s two executive directors.

“This is a critical position,” she stated. “The responsibility to bring in the ‘right’ individual that will continue to build on the foundation set by our founders was an assignment that I did not take lightly.”

since the beginning, with the QLI COO and CFO serving as trustees, too.

“Not long into my tenure as CEO for QLI, Bev [Kracher] encouraged me to also become a trustee, because she felt strongly that ethics start at the top of every organization and every CEO should be engaged with the Alliance in some capacity,” Kearns said. “Bev was also intentional about recruiting more female leaders to the organization.”

Kearns welcomed a group of like-minded individuals, serious about ethical business practices, who further supported her growth as a leader and QLI’s ethical decision-making.

“The Business Ethics Alliance has been a tremendous resource for QLI and has made me a better leader,” Kearns added.

Omaha native Joe Woster’s first brush with the Alliance was a “speed ethics” event in 2016.

“Young professionals went around a room of business leaders and quickly discussed approaches to various dilemmas,” he explained. “I was hooked from day one and have volunteered for the Alliance ever since.”

Woster balances board membership and chairing its long-term strategy committee with involvement in the Omaha Community Foundation, Joslyn Art Museum, UNO and his day job managing strategy and innovation at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska.

“A strong and supportive partnership between a staff and board is so important for advancing an organization’s mission,” Woster said. “I believe in what the Alliance does and want us to succeed. So, the opportunity to co-create our future was exciting to me.”

Thus far, Woster is most proud of helping to “steer an eventbased organization through the thick of the pandemic.”

He noted this was no easy task amid a leadership transition.

“I’m proud of everyone who stepped up and grateful to all the organizations who supported us through a challenging time,” Woster added.

A Call to Action

Pohl emphasized that organizations of all sizes can benefit from an intentional focus on positive, practical business ethics.

“Making ethical decisions takes exercising your moral muscle,” he said. “The more preparation you put in, the better the outcome when you make a tough decision.”

Ethical decisions in business are not always easy or clear-cut, Pohl stressed, and committing to ethics as individuals, companies and a community creates an environment whereby all can learn and grow together.

Moyer also pointed back to its mission statement: “We build leaders, we strengthen, and elevate the Greater Omaha community.”

“Who wouldn’t want to be a part of an organization that does that?” she said. Kearns emphasized how the Alliance has become a unique and valuable resource.

“It is now in our hands to continue the prioritization on ethics in our business community and assure the Alliance remains a healthy resource,” she said.

Referring to the upcoming EthicSpace conference, Kearns noted how easy it is to engage.

“I have absolutely no doubt that every leader, regardless of industry and company size, will benefit from being part of the Business Ethics Alliance,” she said.

Woster encouraged to not be shy about participating in upcoming events.

“Ethical organizations win in the long run, and this creates prosperity for their people and communities,” he said. “Supporting the Business Ethics Alliance fosters an environment where leaders can discuss positive, practical approaches to tough situations and spread this culture to others.”

After acquiring the Little King franchise operation in 2021, Lockwood Development is announcing that the firm’s first Omaha Little King store opened to the public on November 1, with a Grand Opening featuring the Creighton Volleyball team scheduled for Saturday, November 5. The store, located at 8602 West Dodge Road, represents a step forward for both the brand and its footprint in the Omaha area. “Our new store is very close to where the very first Little King store was located when it opened in 1969,” said Chip James, president and CEO of Lockwood Development. “That’s no coincidence. We’re truly inspired by the roots of this historic franchise, and we look forward to carrying that spirit forward to loyal Little King customers, as well as a new generation of Omaha residents.” The 1500-square-foot store combines modern design and an inviting dining area with classic Little King branding and artwork. Customers can expect to order from Little King’s beloved menu featuring subs and sandwiches made with bread baked in store and fresh-sliced meat, as well as soups and desserts, while taking advantage of a variety of conveniences, including a drive-thru. Day to day operations at the 86th and Dodge location, as well as the operation of Lockwood Development’s subsequent stores, will be overseen by Mark Edwards, an Omaha native who grew up in the fast-food business. “It’s an honor to merge the industry I’m passionate about with a brand that means a great deal to me and so many families in Omaha,” said Edwards. “Little King has more than 50 years of rich history in our area, and now we get the opportunity to move it forward, modernize it, and highlight the very best of what it has to offer.” The new store is the first in a series of new locations James, Edwards, and the team at Lockwood Development plan to open in Omaha and Lincoln. Hold Fast Product

DIGITAL PRODUCT CONSULTANT HELPS CLIENTS HIT THE GROUND RUNNING

Neil MacLeod spent two decades helping companies solve some of their most entrenched product problems before he hung out his own shingle. Now, he’s helping clients solve their way to success under his own banner Hold Fast Product.

“The Midwest is very familiar with agile coaching and implementation of process,” he said. “What I do is the upfront work, the discovery work identifying what the most effective solution to the focus problem might be.

“The other thing that I do is the go-to-market preparation, execution and launch. A lot of people have gotten good at execution, but not very many people are good at strategy and launch and measurement. Knowing your positioning, knowing the key value proposition and knowing how to measure success are all things people seem to skip. That’s my focus.”

Brave New World

Digital product consulting may be defined as comprehensive services that seek to help clients bring value to the business and its customers. MacLeod’s potential market is broad, as the strategies and principles he applies are relevant in almost any field for companies of almost any size.

“It doesn’t really matter what you do from an industry-specific standpoint, I can help you figure out what problem to solve,” he said.

“I happen to have a background in logistics and digital marketing and that tends to steer me in a certain direction. But it doesn’t mean that I would at all be afraid of tackling manufacturing or banking or any other industry where I didn’t have previous application.

“What I’m going to give clients is a process and a framework to efficiently determine which bets to place and how to actually figure out which problem to solve very rapidly using prototyping and proven concepts that are done in a week as opposed to a quarter or a year in some cases.”

An Omaha native, MacLeod graduated from Burke High School in 1989 and from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in ’94. After graduation, he moved around for nearly a decade, ultimately running a small temporary housing company in Denver. Family matters brought him back to Nebraska where he signed on with what was then called InfoUSA, now Data Axle USA, where he remained for 17 years.

“I was fortunate enough to be able to build my career in product there,” he said. “I also coupled that kind of progressive curve with some pretty cool introductions via education. I was given the chance to go to Harvard University for a week for executive education with Clay Christensen who wrote “The Innovator’s Solution” and “The Innovator’s Dilemma” which are a couple of the seminal books on product.”

Page 28 • September 22, 2023

NEIL MACLEOD, OWNER, HOLD FAST PRODUCT.

Path to Entrepreneurship

One of MacLeod’s foundational clients was Werner Enterprises, a relationship that inspired him to launch his current venture after he left InfoUSA.

“I basically did an entire digital transformation with [Werner] over the course of about three and a half years,” he said. “That’s when I decided I’d love to apply that knowledge and help other organizations, especially the ones that aren’t as familiar with what ‘product led’ means.”

MacLeod said another thing he’s addressed since Hold Fast began last September is how to help equip established companies to counter encroaching competition from startups.

“The startup community is typically digital savvy,” he said. “What the startup community is doing is going in and trying to disrupt and carve out market share by applying the latest, greatest technologies and taking some of those traditionally mid- to large-sized businesses’ market share away.

“I’m finding that organizations have figured out that they needed to invest in technology probably in the ‘90s and now they’re finding that they have not kept up. They have not applied the best and most recent technologies to solve the problems that are there today. What I’m trying to do is help those businesses stave off that competition, stay innovative and actually prepare for the next generation of success more effectively than they did before.”

Tackling Problems

MacLeod is equally flexible when it comes to defining his work style and preferences. He said while he uses and appreciates Zoom and Google Teams, at the same time he favors in-person meetings where he is able to connect with clients personally. He said this is particularly effective when dealing with clients who are new to his methodology. “I’m an in-person kind of guy,” he said. “The reality of the situation is I think you can build personal relationships a lot more effectively face to face. So my preference is to do onsite, in-person meetings at least once a month. At these meetings, I get the opportunity to work with functional teams, get my hands dirty, and show them how I’ve done things in the past that have worked effectively. I love to help mid- to large-sized businesses understand how they can improve and how they can do things better.”

More than half of Americans either own or work for a small business, creating about two out of every three new jobs in the U.S. each year. As part of National Small Business Week, the U.S. Small Business Administration takes the opportunity to highlight the impact of outstanding entrepreneurs, small business owners, and others from all 50 states and U.S. territories. Every day, they’re working to grow small businesses, create 21st-century jobs, drive innovation, and increase America’s global competitiveness. To learn more, visit www.sba.gov/nsbw.

An EPIC Day

EPIC FOR GIRLS HOSTS SOLD-OUT EVENT

“I started at EPIC about a year ago and I didn’t think we’d be here, but I was proved wrong,” said Kim Thomas, executive director of EPIC for Girls, as she welcomed a sold-out crowd.

Nearly 600 individuals supported EPIC at its inaugural fundraiser, An EPIC Day, at the College of Saint Mary’s Fieldhouse. The event featured Dawn Staley, one of the most celebrated women in women’s basketball.

A quick look at Staley’s bio includes achievements like three Olympic gold medals as a player and one as a coach, the first person in USA Basketball history to have earned the USA Basketball National Coach of the Year and Basketball Athlete of the Year, Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, and so much more.

To say the least, Staley embodies EPIC’s belief that when girls receive equal opportunities to play sports, they excel.

“It’s interesting to see how many women who have played sports become executives in companies,” said Terri Campbell, vice president of alumnae & donor relations at the College of Saint Mary. “It teaches them to be a team player, and how to be confident. It was incredibly important that CSM support this event.”

Just hours before Staley took the stage, EPIC Board President Dalhia Llyod would unknowingly preface Staley’s advice.

“This event is important because it highlights the need for us as a community to support girls of color and it shows girls of color that they have a community around them,” Lloyd said.

“It truly takes a village, and EPIC is creating that village.”

During the fireside chat, Staley spoke about several individuals’ impact on her career, from her mother to the boys she grew up playing to her coaches.

“You have to surround yourself with people that can only help you,” she said. “You have to be really selfish about that. If those people aren’t driving you toward your passions, they should not be part of your life because they’re going to derail you.”

Individuals like Rachelle Tucker and Monica Bosiljevac, who were named Advocates of the Year during the awards ceremony.

Tucker has been a coach for Nebraska Hoops Elite for eight years, a leading figure in Lady Express United & Team Nebraska Express basketball programs, and is the founder of Engage Insight Foundation.

Bosiljevac is the executive director of Football for the World-USA, an organization that is focused on providing youth, specifically individuals of color, with opportunities to play football (soccer). The organization has reached youth in 30 countries and locally has supported 700 youth through programming in 2022.

Dominique Kelley-Jackson was named Coach of the Year. Kelley-Jackson is a teacher and the head coach for the girl’s basketball team at Lincoln High. In the past five years, she has led her teams to 89 wins. For reference, before Kelley-Jackson The Links had won 76 games in 15 years. Her efforts were recognized by Girls and Women in Sports and Fitness with the 2021 Dr. Barbara Hibner Mentor of the Year in Lincoln Award, and the 2023 Ralph Beechner Coach of the Year Award.

Dariuna “Stretch” Lewis was named College Athlete of the Year. A native of North Omaha, Lewis is a role model for the girls in her community. Lewis has received two college degrees and numerous awards for excelling in her collegiate basketball career. During breaks in college, she would return home to facilitate free basketball camps for young girls in hopes of encouraging them to pursue their dreams.

EPIC High School Athlete of the Year went to Omaha Central High School senior Inia (Nia) Jones. Jones currently plays for Nebraska Hoops Elite and has received 10 full-ride division one scholarship offers.

When Centris Federal Credit Union wanted to develop a topnotch leadership program, they tapped Bellevue University for the job. “ I wanted to partner with a credible organization that was an expert in leadership development,” said Robin Fredieu, Training Manager. “ Called CentrisUp, the custom program is taught by industry experts from, and associated with, Bellevue University. It focuses on the management skills Centris employees need to grow and develop, and it provides a practical application that participants implement in real-time on the job.

“ We’ve seen results in behavior changes and how graduates interact with their teams. We know that the more we invest in our employees, the happier and more engaged they will be — and that translates to providing our members the best experience possible. This aligns with the Centris Service Promise of providing a highly trained and knowledgeable staff to serve members’ needs.”
