Lindsay Borgeson How I got into the business: My banking career started like many in the industry as a teller in college. Banking is a sector that can lead to many diverse opportunities with hard work and a desire to learn. Through a willingness to take on stretch projects outside of my scope and leaders that took a chance on me, I was able to continuously reach new career milestones over the last 13 years.

First job: An assistant at the Omaha Community Playhouse, which was so fun. After school I got to comb through headshots and make calls to talent to recruit them for upcoming productions.

The toughest part of the job: Keeping up with the pace of change and staying focused on priorities. Community banks need to stay disciplined to ensure strategic energy is given in the areas that they do best. It is easy to see what the competition is doing and feel the need to “keep up,” but knowing who you are, who your customer is, and your organizational values must remain at the center of all you do.

The best advice I have received: Recently at the ICAN conference I was introduced to the concept of “rounding up.”

Women often hold back from pursuing opportunities due to a perception of lacking certain skills. Go for it and “round up!”

About my family: I have been married to my husband and best friend, Rob, for 11 years. We have three amazing, loving, smart, and strong-willed children: Reed is 6, Ryker is 3, and Rowen is 2.

Something else I’d like to accomplish: Professionally I am embarking on an Executive Development Institute at the Colorado School of Banking with the goal of graduating in two years. Personally, and from a community perspective, I hope to continuously increase my impact and grow my engagement in the nonprofit segment.

How my business will change in the next decade: Banking is an ever-evolving industry and the next decade will only accelerate the pace of change. Partnerships with FinTechs, Banking as a Service (BaaS), client experience delivery, technology innovation, digital currency, and data analytics will continue to rise in priority.

I believe in banking change can be difficult for many, however, to stay relevant the “way things have always been done” will not allow an organization to stay relevant in the coming decade.

Mentor who has helped the most in my career: My mother.

Outside interests: Shopping, travel, concerts, time with family, wine tasting, and hosting gatherings for loved ones.

Favorite vacation spot: Anywhere with sun, sand, and sleeping in.

Other careers I would like to try: If money was not an object and talent not required, I would be a touring rock star!

Favorite cause or charity: Omaha has so many amazing organizations! I have found a ton of value in SHARE Omaha.

I am a big fan of RESPECT and other organizations that help children, provide access, or promotes DEI.

My Point of View SEASON OF CHANGE I started working at Midlands Business Journal around the time I was 10 years old. My first job?

Stuffing envelopes. From there I cleaned the office, helped with layout, took photos, developed film in the darkroom, sold advertising, drove the final layout sheets to the printer in Fremont… I am sure I am missing a few other “tasks” that I performed. You can certainly say MBJ is in my blood.

My father created something very unique, very special, something that has made a big impact with Midlands Business Journal. His love of small and local business, entrepreneurship and the Omaha metro community was a perfect recipe for success.

I ventured out on my own at the age of 28 when I became publisher of Metro Monthly, now know as metroMAGAZINE, and founded ALH Publications, Inc. My love of journalism and this community has been my recipe for success as metroMAG covers the philanthropic, cultural and charitable sectors. It’s a great sister publication that compliments MBJ as I bring the two together.

OCTOBER There is something special about October. October 1975 is when my father founded MBJ. A year ago in October I became publisher/CEO/owner of MBJ. And on October 1, 2021, we launch a complete redesign and expanded content to MBJ. The newspaper hasn’t changed much over the past 46 years. I felt it was time to shake things up a bit and put my stamp on the publication.

ACCORDING TO A CROSS-SECTION OF BUSINESS AND COMMUNITY LEADERS, THE OMAHA-COUNCIL BLUFFS METRO AREA IS RIFE WITH OPPORTUNITY FOR ITS CITIZENS AND BUSINESSES ALIKE. WORK MUST CONTINUE ON ENSURING THOSE OPPORTUNITIES ARE EXTENDED TO EVERYONE, BUT THE CONSENSUS IS THAT WE AS A COMMUNITY CAN LOOK FORWARD WITH CONFIDENCE.

Local leaders representing a spectrum of business sectors— women and men with a variety of backgrounds and life experiences, some native to the area and some transplanted from other communities—were asked to reflect on the character of the Omaha-Council Bluffs metro area. They painted a picture of the community as a great place to live and work, but also with challenges its people are working to resolve to ensure an even better place to be in the future.

They were quick to call out the community’s strengths and assets.

“It’s a community with a tremendous amount of integrity, a work ethic that has its roots in an ag background, great schools and academically very capable people,” said Mickey Anderson, president and chief executive officer of Baxter Auto Group.

CHI Health Interim President and CEO Jeanette Wojtalewicz, MHA, said the business community’s commitment to teamwork

and collaboration was especially demonstrated during the COVID19 pandemic.

“We know and have proven that we are stronger together,” she said.

“We have a collaborative business community, a strong work ethic and a desire to improve the cities and communities we serve.”

Metropolitan Community College President Randy Schmailzl said a commitment to partnerships has been notable during the pandemic recovery period.

“If we want to recapture the positive community momentum we lost due to the pandemic, we cannot tackle each problem individually, business by business, or industry by industry,” he explained. “This community has a rich history of addressing wicked problems through partnerships among businesses, schools, nonprofits, and others. If ever there was a time to tap into that strength, it is now.”

Looking ahead with optimism local leaders consider the community’s assets, challenges and future As a small-business owner and central Nebraska transplant, E Creative President and Chief Creative Officer Esther Mejia said she sees the community’s welcoming environment for businesses a big plus, but also that the community has a lot to offer in general.

“We have a great business community. We have a very strong chamber. We have wonderful nonprofits and philanthropist community. I feel like Omaha is a unique blend of arts and culture,” she said. “We have a (mix) of incredible assets.”

“The Omaha area has a lot to offer employers and their employees.

Clean air and water, relatively low cost of living, great schools.

From a business development standpoint, Omaha’s cheap power and ready access to water are draws for certain kinds of businesses, like data centers,” said Steve Grandfield, President and CEO, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska.

Perhaps Greater Omaha Chamber President and CEO David Brown summed it up best: “There’s a common underlying commitment to make this a great place for everybody.”

MORE THAN FLYOVER COUNTRY Despite its assets obvious to the people who live and work here, the metro area seems to be seen differently by outsiders, the business and community leaders said.

“Oftentimes, people visualize the Midwest as fields of crops and countryside. While we have those beautiful things and we feed the nation, we also have bustling cities with so much opportunity,” Wojtalewicz said. “I would love for anyone looking at Omaha or Council Bluffs from the outside in to see those opportunities, along with a chance to grow a career in ‘Silicon Prairie’ at a start-up and to raise and grow a family.

“I’d like people to realize what a gem Omaha is and not be a very well-kept secret, but right now I think it’s sporadic depending on the time of year it is and what events are going on here,” Brown said.

“Most of the country has only a vague idea where we are. It’s ironic that Peyton Manning put us on the ‘non-geographic’ map when he used ‘Omaha’ as one of his audibles in the huddle. For many people in other parts of the country, that’s the extent of their knowledge about our city,” Granfield said. “We want to see ourselves as a robust economic center, but we’re not—at least not yet.”

Chanda Chacón, who joined Children’s Hospital & Medical Center in 2020 as president and CEO, said she knew of Omaha as the home of the NCAA Men’s College World Series (she was previously at a children’s hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas) but not many details about the community. Now she sees the community as “the best story not being told big enough.”

“Coming here, it’s been such an eye-opener of how amazing the community is, how they invest in infrastructure and people and the connection you can have. It’s the best example of a community where individuals can still make an impact, and that is powerful.”

“People are surprised by Omaha. They are pleasantly surprised, but we need to do something so they’re not surprised. It’s clear we are not doing a good job of letting people across the company know what to expect when they came to Omaha. We are far more cosmopolitan,” Anderson said. “Not passing judgment on any initiative or effort, but my litmus test is that as long as people are coming to Omaha and they’re surprised, I know we’re not doing a good enough job.”

Noddle Companies Chairman and CEO Jay Noddle agreed.

“I think the stereotypical image is getting better but I still think Omaha is seen by many as a place you fly over, and you don’t stop,” he said. “But I think it’s changing. There are a number of things that have given Omaha exposure lately: the swim trials, the volleyball tournament, CWS, and the golf tournament. It’s interesting. One of the reasons I think Omaha is sometimes perceived as a flyover place is because people perceive— incorrectly—that there’s not of substance here, and that there’s not a lot to do, and then all of a sudden for 90 days all we are is on television on prime time every week.”

FINDING TRUE EQUITY FOR EVERYONE The community has some challenges to address, Brown said, like economic inequality.

“We have this strange paradox of remarkable prosperity on one hand and we still have far too high a rate of poverty on the other.

It isn’t strategic, it isn’t systematic; it has just continued to drag that way. While we are all very happy to see all the great things that are happening, there are parts of the community that are not benefiting,” he said. “I think that’s just a challenge we need to take head on; we know there are some things we can do to fix it and we need to fix it.”

Mejia had a similar position.

“I think there is an awareness that maybe for some the needle hasn’t been moved very far, and maybe it hasn’t but I think there is a genuine concern or effort to examine some of those things and see how they can be changed,” she said. “I’m not saying it’s unique to Omaha; this is an issue that’s everywhere, but it’s really finding true equity for everyone. This spans from education to employment to health care; it crosses the gamut of several spectrums. I think equity is the biggest challenge for any community… I think there is direction in changing that, but it’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon.”

“We need to be a place that’s more inclusive; we need to work harder and more intentionally on making it a more inclusive environment for people of all ages but particularly for young people who thinking about where to plant roots,” said Derek Leathers, Chairman, President and CEO of Werner Enterprises.

“I think the perception of Omaha is changing and that we’re on the cusp of being a first-choice community.

- JAY NODDLE, CHAIRMAN AND CEO, NODDLE COMPANIES Grandfield said “brain drain” is part of the concern for continuity in the local workforce.

“Low unemployment is a challenge. It’s tough to find workers.

The tendency is for younger workers to feel like they need to leave Omaha—the so-called ‘brain drain.’ They may eventually return to raise their families here, but this ‘I have to get out of here’ mentality hurts us,” he said. “We are holding our own population-wise, but we aren’t seeing the kind of growth we need to be competitive. In comparison, look at cities like Tulsa, Austin and Nashville. They are about the same size as the Omaha/Council Bluffs metro, but are experiencing tremendous growth, and are very attractive to workers, especially younger workers.”

“I think our biggest challenge is talent. The workforce has to be more robust. There’s a number of great organizations and certainly the university system and academic leaders; everybody is working together. The Aksarben Foundation is taking a leading role. The University of Nebraska is taking a leading role,” Noddle said.

“We have to find a way to keep our kids here and recruit more kids here, and when they graduate we have to have the jobs to keep them here.”

“From our perspective at Metropolitan Community College, one of the main ways business leaders can ensure the community’s bright future is by doing their part to help build career awareness, job skills and work-based learning experiences for tomorrow’s workforce,” Schmailzl said. “There is a whole host of ways businesses can help build the talent pipeline for the future; for example, they can offer job shadows, internships, mentoring, and well-paying entry level jobs on growth pathways tied to ongoing education and training.

A long-term investment in workforce development not only helps individuals find their purpose and paths, but also strengthens families, neighborhoods, and communities.”

Noddle said that getting past the “best-kept secret” problem starts at home.

“I was always fearful that outsiders, if you will, would come to Omaha and hurt our business because there would be more competition and we wouldn’t win. What I’ve learned is that it works 180 degrees opposite of that,” Noddle said. “When people from other markets start to take an interest in Omaha, that means Omaha can become more active. Yes, it raises the bar and we all have to be a little bit better, a little sharper, and the quality of our projects maybe needs to inch up fairly steadily. But at the end of the day, it makes for a better community. So, I think that it is important to embrace new people who are coming to our community to do business as opposed to being fearful of that.”

VISION FOR THE FUTURE In addressing these challenges, the community has some important goals to consider, Brown said.

“It all comes down to talent and population. The way the Omaha and Council Bluffs region is going to be successful near-term and even into the future is to be able to develop and retain and attract the best talent that we can find for our community and our employer,” he said. “That has a huge implication on everything from public policy to tax structure to quality of life to park development to philanthropy and public-private partnerships, to health care—everything you think about in our community ultimately leads to that question of, “How can we be so attractive to people that they want to stay here or want to come here?”

“In the medium to longer-term future, I think the goal now more than ever needs to be to continue to attract and retain the national talent that could and should make Omaha and Council Bluffs their home,” Leathers said. “We’ve got a great story to tell here but we have work to do in attracting at the individual level and the corporate level.”

“Omaha has a good work ethic, relatively low cost of labor, it’s an easy city to get in and out of—but the tax infrastructure is a problem for us. It makes us less attractive to employers than other cities of our size. At the state level, Nebraska is challenged in its

economic development funding—What’s good for Omaha isn’t necessarily good for the rest of the state. It’s a tough balance,” Grandfield said. “Business leaders need to continue to advocate for our community’s continued growth. We need to make faster progress. There is still a lot of work to do to eradicate disparities that still exist in areas like North and South Omaha. As a business community, we need to continue to engage city leaders to address these issues.”

Mejia added that opportunities need to reach everyone. “DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) is really important, but I think it needs to be true equity work where we’re building equity across this area and not just for some,” she said. “My greatest hope is that we live in a community where there is true equity for all, a city that celebrates our diversity and understands the unique lens that we all bring.”

QUALITY OF LIFE Leaders said they have many reasons to be optimistic about the future of the community.

“I believe there’s been an open and renewed focus on diversity and equity and how we, as a community and business leaders, can help embrace these efforts across the metro and all of Nebraska and Iowa,” Wojtalewicz said.

“I think we have clearly taken seriously the notion that quality of life matters, that sense of place matters. We continue to see remarkable improvements in place in facilities and amenities across all kinds of spectrums from sports to culture to recreation to the arts to education to medicine. If you think of a key area, we’ve been working on it. I think it’s a remarkable harbinger of what is to come,” Brown said. “We’re paying attention to those things that we need to get better at and we’re getting better at it.”

He added, “We are having a daily impact on the world. We’re a beautiful, remarkable, quality place for that to happen, and it’s about time for the world to recognize that.”

“We feel very fortunate to be located in North Omaha, an area we recognize as the ‘next’ economy and a growing innovation hub supported by surrounding communities. North Omaha is diverse, expanding, supportive and integral to Nebraska’s overall success,” said Carmen Tapio, the president and CEO of North End Teleservices, LLC. She added that she wants her company to be part of the solution. “North End Teleservices is committed to a future that includes competitive wages, investment in our human capital, economic prosperity and collaborative goals that benefit a diverse population—a population fueled by exceptional education, access to transportation, and diverse leadership with 50 percent of our leadership positions held by women and minorities,” she said.

“One piece I love about living here is that there is a lot of big thinking and impressive innovation, so I think it’s around making sure we keep thinking big but remember to act locally, too, and then scale,” Chacón said. “If you put people first, the other things have a tendency to follow because people are what make culture happen; they’re what does the amazing thinking and innovation.”

“I think the perception of Omaha is changing and that we’re on the cusp of being a first-choice community. We’re also on the cusp of some remarkable growth over the next 10 to 15, 20 years,” Noddle said. “People are thinking that they are willing to give up parts of their current lifestyle on either coast for a little more peace of mind in the Midwest.”

ALL VOICES IN THE CONVERSATION Everyone—whether business leader, community leader or private citizen—plays a role in shaping the community’s future, Grandfield said.

“The more engaged and aware everyone is, the better off we will be. We have strong, capable city leaders, but they need input and support from the community,” he said. .

Mejia agreed. “We all have such a unique lens and it’s important for our voices to be incorporated in these conversations or in these decisions that are being made.”

“We really have to have new generations being as committed to making Omaha a remarkable place as past generations have,” Brown said.

A FAVORITE PLACE Overall, leaders expressed great confidence in the Omaha-Council Bluffs metro area as a great place to live and work.

“The work ethic is incredible, the character and the integrity of the people here is very high,” Leathers said. “There’s a lot to like here, and as a transplant myself I can tell you that I reluctantly agreed to relocate to Omaha 22 years ago and now it’s one of my favorite places on the globe. I think it’s an amazing place to live and work and I’m proud to say I raised my kids here. I certainly had it all wrong in my perception as an outsider 20-plus years ago.”

“The reason we moved here was the potential we saw, and the people. That, for me, is what builds a place where people want to live,” Chacón said. “I remembered when I interviewed that I said to my husband how engaged the entire organization and community was. That was our hook.”

“There is no weather, no geographic feature, no entertainment district or athletic offering that stacks up to the quality of the people who live in this community,” Anderson said. “Every day we deal

with the most delightful people and it is a privilege and a pleasure.

And I promise you there are a lot of people all across the country who would enjoy it as much as I do; we really have to let them know it’s here.”

“No matter where they come from, people here are genuine, hardworking, and eager to make a difference for each other. Our local work ethic reinforces those who are not in it for themselves, but for the good of the cause,” Schmailzl said.

“I think the future for Omaha and the region is really bright.

I think we can persevere through the tough times ahead, whatever those are going to be, because of our people and their commitment to one another and a great quality of life. We have a lot to do and it starts with talent,” Noddle said. “The people are our best asset, second to none.”

I love living and working in Omaha because we have a thriving business climate, an entrepreneurial spirit, and a wide range of entertainment and leisure activities. I love our common-sense attitude about getting things done and the smalltown feel of always being connected with someone no matter where you go. Omaha is a vibrant and fast-growing community that offers many opportunities for jobs, education and innovation. The people and businesses are very charitable and are always finding ways to improve our community and serve those in need.

Omaha is the best of both worlds. You get the amenities and world-class business opportunities of a large city with the accessibility, affordability and quality of life of a mid-tier city. There’s a culture of supporting one another, and community actually means something here. Omaha’s been a great launching pad for my professional career and you can grow a career, start a business, and just have the freedom to do what you want and be successful here. Lots of growth, activities and opportunity abound in Omaha.

Last month, a household name in media with offices on both coasts said, “What amazes me most about you, Bill, is that with your client and talent roster, you are still working from Omaha instead of making the jump to New York or LA.” I understand his point, but while airplanes and technology easily solve for what we lack in proximity by being based in Omaha, there’s not an equalizer for the intangibles we enjoy by being Nebraska-based.

As an e-commerce business owner, I like being centrally located in the country, in a city with a reasonable cost of living. This enables me to own the building we operate in. Q&A with David Brown GREATER OMAHA CHAMBER PRESIDENT AND CEO In July, Greater Omaha Chamber President and CEO David Brown announced that he will retire in 2022 after leading the Chamber since 2003. As he begins to wrap up his professional responsibilities, Brown reflected on his Chamber career, the local business community, and his life in Omaha.

Q. What Greater Omaha Chamber accomplishments during your tenure are you most proud of?

A. We’ve had a huge role to play in making sure the economy kept growing. The GDP (gross domestic product for the metropolitan area) has grown 88 percent since 2003, wages have gone up significantly, there have been more than $12 billion in capital investments, and there are almost a thousand projects that we’ve done, 47,000 jobs and almost 500 new companies to the market.

But I think some of the work I’m most proud of is the work that we’ve done in the community. As an example, most of the folks don’t understand the role that we’ve played in helping to shape how K-12 education is measured in the state. When I first got here, the standardized testing that was done across the state was different in every district, so you couldn’t compare schools in one district to another… The business community, led by the Chamber, went down to the Legislature and got that changed… That was a huge, huge undertaking to get that done but I think the impact it had on the quality of education around here was dramatic.

In more recent times, the Greater Omaha 2040 Plan might be the thing that will have the longestranging impact on the community. This was developed in 2017 in partnership with the United Way and the Urban League and (many) other people, trying to figure out what Omaha could be by 2040.

Q. Do you feel you’re leaving with any unfinished business?

A. That the Chamber agenda is going to continue on its path over the next decade is really important and I don’t see the Chamber dropping the ball on some of the things I have identified. It might be unfinished now but it’s not going to be dropped. It just takes time to get some of these big issues done.

Q. What has been your biggest challenge during your tenure at Greater Omaha Chamber?

A. Sometimes our desire to do great things exceeds our bandwidth. It’s tough to turn down big, cool projects, but…you have to pick and choose… There are so many great things that could get done.

And there are so many things that are crucial and that you have to get done; you have to do those things first and then start moving on to the others.

Q. How do you want to be remembered after you retire from the Chamber next year?

A. Hopefully, they’d think that I was a good leader, that I could work with just about anybody and tried to get the right thing done every time.

Q. Just for fun: How many other David Browns have you met in your lifetime?

A. It might only be a half a dozen or so that I’ve met, but I’ve known about hundreds in the different communities I’ve been in. There was one place where the mayor of one city was David White and the mayor of the other city was David Black, and of course I’m David Brown—so whenever we’d show up for ribbon-cuttings, it would be ‘The David White, David Black and David Brown Show.’

Q. What would you like to say about your family?

A. My wife Maggie is the ultimate partner. We met back in the early ‘80s and were married about six months after we met and have been together almost 40 years now. She has been behind me every step of the way.

My sons are 27 and 37. They’re both here in Omaha. Elijah, 27, is an aspiring opera singer and just got his master’s in opera performance at the University of Alabama. And Greg, 37, finished his master’s degree in marketing, and is in marketing at the UNMC School of Public Health…

I’m really proud of both of them.

Q. What else would you like to say?

A. Chambers, by virtue of our membership, tend to have members all over the political spectrum but most of them congregated around the middle… I think chambers are uniquely positioned to make a difference in communities by just recognizing that we are supposed to be building those communities and that business organizations are great places to get that done.

Buildertrend launches INNOVATIVE PARTNERSHIP WITH HOME IMPROVEMENT GIANT Buildertrend, a 15-year-old Omaha-based software company, is forging a first-of-its-kind partnership with the world’s largest home improvement brand, The Home Depot, to help professional contractors, homebuilders and remodelers increase customer satisfaction, reduce delays and eliminate communication hiccups amid a flurry of activity within the construction industry — heavy workload represented partly by several months’-worth of backlogged projects.

Leadership indicated the integration of Buildertrend’s software with the giant’s Pro Xtra loyalty program may be a first, but it won’t be the last — as it’s keen to carve out partnerships with other suppliers — and the program is spurring additional value-adds for customers.

“The goal was to not only diversify revenue streams, but also expand the scope of our relationship with the residential contractors who signed up for our project management software,” said Chief Strategy Officer David Arnold. “Outside of our involvement with The Home Depot, this exploration has led to offerings such as payment processing, Builders Risk Insurance, as well as a focus on contractors’ material purchasing needs.”

Based out of 11818 I St., Buildertrend’s cloud-based project management software has grown to be used by more than 1 million users across 100-plus

countries. In late August, the companies announced their “newly integrated experience,” which was characterized as allowing Buildertrend users who enroll in the Pro Xtra program to view real-time availability and buy products from The Home Depot within Buildertrend’s app. Buildertrend users can also enjoy discounts on products at The Home Depot, and Pro Xtra members are also eligible for discounts on Buildertrend’s software.

Arnold was the lead strategist and key player behind the two brands joining forces.

“Buildertrend has been evaluating partnership opportunities with The Home Depot for years and, ultimately, formalized a strategic partnership in March of 2020,” he said. “Both companies have had great respect for each other from the very start of our discussions.”

But, Arnold noted, it did take a number of conversations, trips and pilot collaborations to determine how the supplier and software-as-a-service, as he puts it, “could and should work together.”

“What brought the companies to the table originally is the same thing that runs throughout all the partnership focus areas: a laser-like focus on helping contractors by providing them tools and services that save them time and money,” he said.

Partners like The Home Depot make “strategic sense,” he continued, adding that Buildertrend is taking on private equity partners and increasing investment in new growth opportunities related to this rife-with-opportunity contractor market.

“We … have long-term plans to duplicate this partnership model with other material suppliers in the industry,” he said.

Corporate Development Strategist Michael Vandevoort oversaw integration beta testing with a select group of Buildertrend users.

“It’s been a multiple-year iterative process,” he said, describing a “lightweight integration” in 2018 with a simple Excel import and export into Buildertrend.

“With each feature update to the integration, we would spend one-on-one time with customers to ensure we were receiving user feedback through every step of the process,” he said. “We are lucky to have such a strong relationship with our customers to ask for their feedback during the development of this integration.

Their feedback ensured that we were creating the best experience possible for our customers.”

Vandevoort recalled how those early testers liked the integration’s seamlessness; updates on daily pricing and inventory from preferred The Home Depot stores are pushed out.

“Having the ability to give them confidence in both price and materials availability is a game-changer and can significantly impact accuracy and profitability of their businesses,” he said.

Vandevoort also described “a lot of excitement” associated with its receipt management tool.

“It automatically syncs purchases made at The Home Depot, online or in person, to the corresponding Buildertrend account,” he said. “It includes a feature where you can manually upload and reconcile receipts to a specific job.

“It is not uncommon for construction crews to make several trips to The Home Depot to purchase miscellaneous supplies during a project. It is easy to lose sight of these transactions. And, all too commonly, these purchases can really add up.”

The receipt management tool’s overall expense management benefits allow builders, he said, to focus on what they do best.

“While Buildertrend helps them better manage their businesses,” he said.

When asked how the recent integration has gone over with users, Vandevoort said more than 13% of all eligible customers had connected their Pro Xtra accounts to their Buildertrend accounts just seven days after the launch.

“We are extremely encouraged,” he said.

Over the longer term, Vandevoort indicated the partnership will significantly improve customers’ efficiency.

“This integration seamlessly helps builders from project start to finish, and helps to manage and organize all the hiccups in between,” he said. “Builders who utilize this tool will never have to guess on material pricing or if they are staying on the project’s budget.”

Buildertrend and its subsidiaries are powered by almost 800 employees, 650 of which are in Omaha, and in more than 25 states, according to Vice President of People Brandy Menaugh.

“We plan to continue to grow over the next 12 months,” she said, adding that they project a net headcount growth of at least 150 employees. “The hybrid work environment allows us to explore remote opportunities for more focused positions, which expands our footprint and enables us to pursue the most qualified talent nationally.”

Menaugh, who oversees people and recruiting teams (and all HR efforts), is actively growing its executive-level team with top talent to lead new business units, which support the growth and expansion of revenue streams.

She also said that they awarded eight hours of volunteer time off at the beginning of 2020 to each employee for use throughout the year.

“VTO was originally intended to encourage teams to engage in community service activities together,” she said. “The pandemic broadened our view of our VTO program and led us to foster deeper relations in the community by getting involved and assist with more organizations in need.”

This year, Buildertrend expanded the ways VTO can be used (individually and virtually) and by awarding each employee 16 hours annually. A quarterly volunteer spotlight award also debuted, which recognizes an employee for his or her outstanding contributions to the community by donating $1,000 to their choice charity.

2021 also saw the debut of Buildertrend’s employee wellness program, providing incentives to employees for wellness activities and volunteerism. Since the pandemic, Menaugh said, employee favorites for in-person service activities include Heart Ministry Center, ABIDE, Nebraska Community Blood Bank, Together Inc., Food Bank for the Heartland, Heartland Equine Therapeutic Riding Academy, Girls in STEAM and Completely Kids.

“Virtual engagements have included the United Way’s virtual read-aloud, Keep Omaha Beautiful and Big Brother Big Sisters Mentoring program,” she said.

Company-wide efforts range from Project Harmony and Adopt-a-Family (through the Salvation Army) to Habitat for Humanity and Brew-Haha. Longstanding relationships include those with Habitat for Humanity and Building Homes for Heroes.

Every year on Sept. 11, a pall falls over the country. But Jill Slupe, the president of “Omaha first” sales agency Verde Martin, was there — in New York City, watching as the Twin Towers fell. Just as the direction of history was forever altered — there will always be a “pre-9/11” and a “post-9/11” — Slupe’s career trajectory was also altered and defined at least partly by the tragedy that prompted such monumental change.

“It was a difficult time; I did some soul searching and decided I wanted to move back to Omaha,” Slupe recalled. “[It] took two demotions to get here, and it was the best decision I ever made.”

Formerly, the self-described “lifelong learner and teacher at heart” went to school in England — an experience that motivated her desire to work internationally.

“A professor suggested I look at working for the Department of Defense,” Slupe said. “I wrote to over 20 bases looking for an internship. I landed an internship working at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona, that led to a civil service job working at Minot Air Force Base.”

“Then,” she continued, “I was promoted and transferred to Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines and worked on special projects in Asia. I was lucky. I had bosses who supported me.”

Slupe recalled how she ran facilities that were characterized as “profit centers.”

“Think golf course, bowling alley or youth activities,” she said. “I won several awards for performance and was then recruited to develop a training program for Air Combat Command that trained facility leaders on how to accelerate sales in their operations. I traveled all over the world studying operations and training leaders.”

Slupe wanted a career change; she didn’t see an opportunity in her previous line of work.

“So, I earned my MBA,” Slupe said, a reference to her degree from Creighton University. “Then, I worked in outside sales and moved into leadership. I was promoted many times and my responsibility grew.”

While she always enjoyed “being a top performer in sales,” Slupe said, her greater passion has been teaching and watching sales, peers, students and clients grow from new knowledge.

She ended up working for a national advertising firm, leading the countrywide rollout of training reps to sell Google Ads. “I wanted a change,” she said. “Instead of leading team members, I wanted to partner with business owners and help them with their sales and advertising.”

Slupe started Verde Martin in 2007, designing the firm around feedback that she had received from business owners regarding their needs.

“I … created training, tools and systems to help the owner get to where they wanted to go,” she said. “I … love working with business owners, helping them accelerate sales and obtain their goals.”

She said the most satisfying part of the job has always been that “lightbulb moment,” when the client expands their mind and creates new ideas.

Verde Martin’s niche is in training city leaders on how to increase revenues — efforts that have resulted in the firm being recognized twice in the National Recreation and Parks Association magazine.

“Publicity and awards are nice,” she continued, “but the greatest recognition is when a peer calls or emails and shares a story about how our training program impacted a customer or the organization.”

Slupe said “selling is selling,” regardless of if the salesperson is a man or a woman. Both can excel; however, technology has transformed the process.

“And will change it further,” she added.

When Slupe started her career, she met with clients in person or via phone.

“Now I can text, Zoom, email, call, instant message, see in person or communicate through social media, or not even communicate with a customer and let artificial intelligence do the selling,” she said. “Sales is changing, and AI is having the greatest impact on the sales process.”

She described “success” as delivering on one’s personal values.

“I feel successful when my team members, clients, mentees, organizations I serve (boards and committees), and peers obtain their goals,” Slupe explained.

“My philosophy is to ‘hold the ladder.’ So, the people I am supporting are steady as they climb progressively closer to their goal. Success may be raising money for a nonprofit to fund a program or making an introduction for a business to develop a new partnership. Their excitement is my excitement.”

A past president of West Omaha Rotary, awarded with the organization’s highest honor (Outstanding Club – for District 5650), Slupe said she inspires others by listening, asking questions and encouraging others to open their minds.

“When an individual opens their mind, they create energy, enthusiasm and new ideas,” she said. “I believe these ideas are what inspire people. Simplified, having a clear understanding of what is important to others, and using my skills and resources to encourage, open doors and help them get what they want.”

Slupe, who also teaches undergrad and graduate programs for Creighton, Midland University, Nebraska Wesleyan University and Bellevue University, is personally inspired by the visual.

“I have dyslexia,” she said. “So, I am less inspired by words and more inspired by art.”

She shared with the Midlands Business Journal her screen shot; it’s a painting

by Dr. David Jasper that features a large, green-hued eye.

“I see this painting many times a day,” Slupe said. “It inspires me to ‘look,’ to really look at people and not just listen, but hear them.”

As with all businesses, it’s not all puppies and rainbows.

“In 2019, more than half of all the Verde Martin clients were preparing their businesses for exit and I loved working with the business owner on their transition,” she said. “I saw a need for a product that consolidated exit expertise.

So, we partnered with over 20 exit professionals and created Exit Playbook, a website with tools, by exit experts, for business owners planning to exit.

“It is a beautiful site with 16,000 business owners receiving weekly information.”

Since Exit Playbook launched in 2020, though, Slupe said “only half the revenue model worked.”

“Our timing may have been off because of COVID,” she said. “But mostly, business owners did not want to pay for content. It was a hard lesson.”

It isn’t all business, all the time for Slupe.

“For over 13 years, I have tried to take a trip every month to explore new cities or shores, enjoy great restaurants, and view art and architecture,” she said.

“Minus a couple months in 2020, I have met that goal. I have Kansas, Chicago, Minnesota and Arizona planned to round out 2021.”

When asked about what she aspires to for her future, Slupe said: “Owning a business is often a lot of responsibility. And, sometimes, I dream of working for the Zaha Hadid architecture firm, doing business development in the U.S. They do the most beautiful work, and I would love to use my sales skills to expand their presence here.”

The traditional image for inspiration as a light bulb has never been more apt than when applied to Travis Freeman.

Not only has the 50-year-old entrepreneur built a twinkling empire through his holiday lighting company Brite Ideas Decorating, but he’s also expanded it to a Colorado office and branched into marketing his own brand of holiday lights. All of which, by the way, comes as the serial entrepreneur continues to dabble in real estate and the restaurant business.

Even with all of that, the light bulb of inspiration continues to go off for the entrepreneur, a 2003 Midlands Business Journal 40 Under 40 honoree and father of four.

“I always say if you’re going to do something every day, do something you love because you’ll excel at that and have fun doing it,” he said. “To me, if you have that, it’s not a job. You’re just blessed to be doing something every day that you love.”

Freeman launched the company in 1990 as an offshoot of his landscaping business to help fill the winter months. Decorative lighting quickly eclipsed the landscaping venture and, in the time since, Brite Ideas Decorating has grown to serve a long roster of residential, commercial and civic clients.

In just two years, the company expanded from its original lighting options and

developed the patented Linkable Lights and many other custom pieces. By 1998, Brite Ideas began offering distributorships for its products, signing up 15 in the first year. Today, Freeman puts that number at more than 600 distributors nationwide, making Brite Ideas one of the nation’s largest manufacturers of specialized outdoor holiday lighting.

Tony Gowan, parks and facilities director for the City of Papillion, is a longtime client and friend. He said he saw Freeman’s expertise and drive from the very start of their working together in 2008 when Freeman walked Gowan, then brand new to his role, through the first Winter Wonderland city display.

“I think the thing that jumps out at me with Travis is, he’s always willing to try new things to move his business to greater heights,” Gowan said. “I saw that when he moved from his location on Farnam Street out to the location at 150th and Blondo in the old grocery store or opening the distributor site down in Atlanta and, of course, getting involved in the production aspect with the facility in China where he actually makes his own product.

“All those things show innovation. It shows a great knowledge of the field he is in to be able to attack and to run offshoots of what used to be a fairly small business into making it now global for him. That just really appeals to me. I’m so proud of him.”

Freeman said the decision to expand into manufacturing was a natural one, given the narrow window for holiday lighting installs and the wide disparity of decorating tastes from region to region in the country. Manufacturing lights helps even out revenue over a bigger swath of the year, he said.

“Christmas is 90% of the decorating business,” he said. “If you look geographically, most of our sales come from the Northeast and places with different seasons. It’s still not as big in California as it is in Colorado, New Jersey and New York where people do more decorating during holiday months.”

Freeman’s other entrepreneurial passion is as a restauranteur.

“I’ve always owned real estate, since I was 20,” he said. “I had an opportunity to buy land at 72nd and Dodge, which then we bought Fudruckers at that time. Another friend of mine wanted to open a restaurant with me, so we bought a building at 6913 Maple which is now Mantra.”

His longtime association with the restaurant business also widened his circle of mentors and advisors. Willy Thiesen, founder of Godfather’s Pizza, said he was impressed with Freeman from the start and continues to serve as a mentor and friend.

“Travis’s strategy is not ‘I hope I get this done.’ Hope is not a strategy for him,” Thiesen said. “We’re alike in that sense; I expect results, I don’t hope I get them. And he’s that guy who can do everything he expects you to do, and he can probably do it better.

If you need a left-handed monkey wrench with a three and a half socket and a self-tightening bolt, he says, ‘I think I got one right here in my truck.’”

Thiesen said the thing he most admires about Freeman is how he earned everything he has through hard work and never-say-die determination. Even these very traits he came by honestly, through watching his father, Jim. “His father had one of the most difficult jobs there could possibly be. He was a vacuum cleaner door-to-door salesman,” Thiesen said.“

But those are where the skills I’m talking about came from. He got confidence from his dad. He got perseverance from his dad. He got salesmanship from his dad. He saw how hard his dad worked to put food on the table. Those are skills not everybody has.”

For his part, Freeman credits all kinds of influencers for helping him navigate his career in business and various entrepreneurial ventures.

“I say I never made it here on my own, there’s always been a steppingstone,” he said. “I’ve had a lot of influential people help me. There’s a lot of people who have worked for me that have gone and found their own success in landscaping, nurseries, even the lighting industry world. They start their own company and they’re buying lights from us, decorating customers’ homes. I’m not one of those people who says I did it all on my own.”

Still, when Freeman faced his ultimate challenge in business — a devastating 2005 fire set off by lightning that razed the company headquarters and handed him a $2 million loss — he showed the depth of his grit and determination. The company was back up and running in 24 hours and exactly one year later, Freeman moved back into the refurbished building.

As other challenges have come along since then, as they invariably do in business, he points to that event as proof of what a company can do when it just won’t quit.

“You can get down on yourself quickly about things and circumstances happen to everybody. Everybody gets knocked off the horse; it’s how quick you get back on,” he said. “I refer back to when I had my fire; it took pretty much everything from me.

“This year, getting product in from overseas, the lack of workers and truckers getting things here, things have been challenging. But if I can get through the fire, I can get through anything. You also have to understand how important it is to hire the right people. No one is going to do everything the way you would, and you have to accept that. But you can’t grow or even run your business if you don’t keep the right people around you.”

Mixins Rolled Ice Cream OPENS SECOND LOCATION, PLANS FOR FRANCHISING Now reaching its third anniversary, Mixins Rolled Ice Cream is set to expand after opening a second location in the spring and aiming to franchise in 2022.

The business was founded by Vandra Caldwell and Trishonna Helm, two business owners in their mid-20s that had the idea after Helm’s trip to Los Angeles three years ago. She was visiting the city and tried rolled ice cream for the first time, then posted a photo to her Snapchat story. Caldwell saw the story, was interested in where the ice cream was from, and once the two women connected, the rest was history. They knew they wanted to bring rolled ice cream to the Midwest.

Rolled ice cream is literally just that: rolled. It is different than the traditional spoonfuls that are found in many other ice cream shops around the country. Mixins Rolled Ice Cream flavors are homemade and rolled out on super-chilled flat tops for their customers in a variety of different sweet and savory flavors that range from key lime pie, strawberry cheesecake, and all sorts of other flavors in between.

In August, Mixins Rolled Ice Cream marked its third year of business operations. When Helm and Caldwell first started out, they put in 16-hours a day, side by side, for three months straight. Their goal was to create a company that was going to be an asset to the community that sparked joy and brought people together. After beginning with just five staff members and realizing that this was not enough to keep up with the demand for their products, the company now has two locations, 1405 Jackson St. in downtown Omaha and 2821 S. 108th St. in Rockbrook Village. During the winter, there are fluctuations in staff due to demand and the colder temperatures outside, but when summertime weather is at its hottest, they employ up to 40 people total.

The team also works with marketing specialists, social media managers, and a business consultant to help increase brand awareness and cultivate a bigger following.

When asked why Mixins Rolled Ice Cream has become a popular addition to the Omaha area, Caldwell said, “The product is high quality and completely different from anything around. As owners, we uphold a positive persona and are well known in the community. Omaha loves to rally around us to show support.”

Unique flavors are also what keeps people coming back for more.

Menu items range in flavors from “Matcha Madness,” which includes matcha Pocky sticks, a fortune cookie and mochi, to “112,” a mix of peaches, graham crackers and cinnamon drizzle on top of the rolled ice cream.

“What makes our company stand apart is that it is continuously ‘cutting edge,’” Caldwell said. “We take risks with our flavors and merchandise. Our slogan is ‘More than ice cream, it’s a lifestyle.’ We live this slogan everyday as we continue trend-stacking with all of our products. The apparel also remains upbeat, streetwear, and trendy.”

Mixins recently added “ice cream sickles” to the menu and is known for spelling names out in ice cream for their customers.

When the pandemic hit, sweet treats were the go-to recipe that hit the spot for many people dealing with stress and the chaos happening around the world.

While there have been staff shortages this summer and now moving into the fall months, Caldwell said that overall, business has been steady.

“With business comes plenty of challenges and many unforeseen circumstances,” she said. “We’ve grown over the years, steadily improving costs of goods, payroll percentages, balancing inventory, building culture amongst our walls, and expanding overall. Surprisingly, Covid has impacted our industry very minimally, as people use ice cream to help cope during these trying times. We consider ourselves a comfort food and this is what keeps our customers coming back.”

Looking ahead, Mixins Rolled Ice Cream has a vision that is already coming to fruition. Helm and Caldwell are planning on bringing plenty of delicious rolls to young and old alike across the country, as they are set to become an official franchisor in the next three months. In the beginning of 2022, the team plans on opening another brick-and-mortar store in Atlanta, Georgia. By the end of next year, they hope to have at least 10 franchises open.

BREEZE, AN OMAHA-BASED INSURTECH COMPANY, HAS REPORTEDLY RECEIVED THE LARGEST RECORDED SERIES A FUNDING FOR A NEBRASKA STARTUP. The $10 million in financing will help the startup continue to build a platform that makes supplemental disability and critical illness insurance more accessible.

Colin Nabity, Midlands Business Journal’s 2019 Entrepreneur of the Year recipient, founded the company with Cody Leach in 2019.

In 10 to 15 minutes, the platform is able to use artificial intelligence and a users medical records to create individualized policies.

Nabity noted that while Breeze can support and write individuals ages 18-60, most of its customers are in their late 30s to 40s.

“People start to become more concerned about potential health-related matters and how they may affect personal finances when they’re in their prime earning years and have major responsibilities like a spouse, children or a mortgage,” he said.

The funding will not only help Breeze continue to build its product, support and distribution teams in Omaha, but also add other products.

“Most notably, a new short term disability insurance product that will also help support women while on maternity leave,” Nabity said.

“This is a huge issue, especially for women working independently that don’t have access to traditional employer benefits.”

Noting that Omaha is “surrounded by a lot of great insurance companies and insurance talent,” Breeze partnered with Lincoln-based Assurity, as well as and Des Moines-based Principal, to issue policies.

The company, which opened its doors on Aug. 20, facilitates drug testing services, alcohol EtG, fingerprinting services, and paternity tests for a variety of reasons, including court orders, employment opportunities and work mandates.

For example, if a client was applying for a job driving a city bus in Omaha through Metro Transit they would need a Department of Transportation drug test, which tests for marijuana, cocaine, opiates, amphetamines and methamphetamines, and phencyclidine (PCP). Accurate Screening is qualified and able to administer the test and report its results.

As a business owner and community member in North Omaha, Quartey said she recognized a gap in accessible services in the area.

“I understood one of the dynamics behind unemployment rates in the Black community,” she said.

“Prior to our office opening for business, these services could only be obtained in west Omaha and in areas not situated on the bus line for the most part.”

The business is open seven days a week, again, with the intention of eliminating barriers. Appointments can be made online.

NORTHPOINT RECOVERY

NORTHPOINT RECOVERY HAS OPENED THE FIRST OF ITS THREE PLANNED FACILITIES DEDICATED TO HELPING TREAT ADDICTION AND MENTAL HEALTH IN THE OMAHA AREA. The first facility, located at 7215 Ontario St., is geared towards inpatient treatment for up to 44 adults. The two remaining facilities will be for outpatient care of adults and adolescents.

Dr. Mark Jones, who received his Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in counseling and recently serviced as general director of health and medical services at Union Pacific, is leading the Nebraska expansion. Northpoint Recovery also has locations in Colorado, Washington and Idaho.

In 2020, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Rural Drug Addiction Research Center released a report from 2017 data concluding that out of 13,467 admissions to publically funded treatment facilities, 52.61% where in areas such as Omaha, Lincoln and Grand Island. Alcohol, methamphetamine and marijuana accounted for 87.55% of admissions.

“Northpoint is unique in that we offer a full range of integrated substance use disorder services,” said Jones, vice president-Nebraska.

Staff includes physicians, advance practice professionals, registered nurses, therapists and recovery techs, who help patients understand triggers so they can avoid relapses and live sober lives. In addition to inpatient programs, a range of outpatient services with varying intensities are available.

For example, an all-day care program is available, as well an intensive program that’s three hours a day, three days a week.

“These offerings help patients transition to a lower level of care as they progress in treatment, or increase the intensity of the care as needed,” Jones said.

OLSSON, THE ENGINEERING FIRM HEADQUARTERED IN LINCOLN WITH MORE THAN 1,000 EMPLOYEES, HAS OPENED UP ITS 30TH OFFICE IN NORFOLK, NEBRASKA. “We have considered the Norfolk office as a potential area for expansion for several years, but the key factor that let us to move forward at this time was finding the right personnel,” said Jeff Palik, Greater Nebraska office leader.

Leading the branch will be Seth Lange, a professional engineer with more than 10 years of experience.

Palik said that opening this office will not only help Olsson serve current clients in and around Norfolk, but it will also help them reach new clients in northeast Nebraska.

“This will allow us to market to new clients that used to feel like we were too far away in our Grand Island or South Sioux City offices,” he said.

Recent projects in Norfolk include the 25th Street project (transportation planning, structural engineering and construction management services) and the East Norfolk Avenue Bridge (landscape architecture, civil engineering, geotechnical, materials testing, surveying, construction management, traffic management systems and project visualization services).

The East Norfolk Avenue Bridge project won the 2017 Outstanding Achievement award from the American Concrete Institute, Nebraska Chapter.

Previously the Grand Island office handled these projects.

CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL & MEDICAL CENTER

AFTER NEARLY FIVE YEARS UNDER CONSTRUCTION, CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL & MEDICAL CENTER WAS FINALLY ABLE TO OPEN THE DOORS TO THE NEW HUBBARD CENTER FOR CHILDREN. The expansion, which doubles the hospitals physical capacity, will house the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Fetal Care Center, and the Hematology/Oncology Unit.

Children’s Hospital President & CEO Chanda Chacón also noted enhanced surgical space, expanded Radiology and Emergency Departments and a new rooftop helipad.

“One truly innovative feature is the addition of an intraoperative MRI,” she said. “This allows us to see images of the brain during surgery to get the very best outcomes for children.”

Taking a progressive approach to future care, the Hubbard Center also houses Children’s Hospital’s first ever-Cardiac Care Unit.

“The unit is exclusively dedicated to providing the full range of high-quality pediatric cardiac care, from admission to discharge,” said Chacón. “The CCU represents an entirely new care model, where we will have one highly skilled and specialized team in one place.”

The building will also include a new dining and cafeteria facility, meeting space for learning and continuing education, chapel space and outdoor gardens, according to construction manager Kiewit Building Group. The project also included 50,000 square feet of renovation to the existing hospital building, adding an operating room, expanding the emergency department lobby and waiting area, updating existing patient check-in, and expanding the pharmacy, according to Kiewit.

HDR provided the architecture and engineering services.

The Center is named after Dr. Theodore F. Hubbard and Claire M. Hubbard, Omaha residents who have left a legacy of philanthropy across the metro.

Branding is the topic of Omaha Realtor, motivational speaker, and author Van Deeb’s next as yet untitled book.

“I believe that in our new world in the business climate we are successful because of the way we brand ourselves,” Deeb said. “I think you’ll see more and more people brand themselves and not just sit back and wait for the phone to ring. I want to help people with that because that’s what I’ve been doing my whole career.”

Deeb’s career began in the early 1980s when he received a marketing degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and then enrolled in a real estate specialty school in Dallas in 1983.

Deeb remained in Dallas — which was the No. 1 real estate market in the U.S. at that time — for 10 years. To build a list, real estate students are advised to call everyone they know and tell them they are in real estate.

“I had no one, so I had to start from scratch and organically create customers without any resources,” Deeb said.

Deeb moved back to Omaha in 1993 where he started Deeb Realty out of his 200-square-foot basement. He slowly added agents, eventually bringing on 350 agents and becoming recognized as one of the largest independent real estate firms in the Midwest.

In 2009 he sold the firm — known today as Nebraska Realty — to Andy Alloway who had started as Deeb Realty’s receptionist and advanced to assistant manager, manager, general manager until finally Deeb sold him the company.

Deeb, who has been doing motivational speaking for 25 years, opened Big Omaha Realty in 2011.

“This company was designed to remain extremely small and more customer service oriented,” Deeb said. “It makes me a better motivational speaker when I can tell my audience that I’m still in business, that I’m still doing it. It makes me very relatable to my audience.”

Deeb has written five books, beginning with “Selling From The Heart” in the late 1990s. His latest is “Baxter: My First Dog at 59,” which he put his branding book on hold to write.

“I had to write about the joy [Baxter] brings me,” Deeb said. “He’s a 10-pound, 2-and-a-half-yearold Havanese. I named him after [Will Ferrell’s character] Ron Burgundy’s dog in Anchorman.”

His previous business book was “The Power of Asking.”

“It goes with my seminar’s design,” he said. “It teaches people how to ask people for business as

well as how to be the person people want to do business with. It’s very beneficial for entrepreneurs and people who are trying to build their business.”

Deeb writes all of his books to share his victories and his failures, which he hopes will encourage and empower others with the knowledge that they can accomplish anything they set their minds to.

“My message when I go out to speak to people is that there’s nothing they can’t do if they have the work ethic and the discipline,” he said. “A big reason why I write these books is because of my own experiences.

“When I read inspirational, motivational, and spiritual literature, if I get one thing out of it, it was worth reading the whole book. I want people to know what I’ve experienced in business. It’s experiences of what to do and what not to do. Being a business leader, I want them to know the failures and the victories. My books aren’t encyclopedias — they may be 95 to 195 pages — but my whole mission is to hopefully resonate with something they’re going through in their business lives, something that will be helpful.”

In several of his books, Deeb talks about the power of the handwritten note. People often tell him that they are writing five handwritten notes a day or are writing 10 each week. He knows many people who keep his books in the front seats of their cars as a reminder of the basics and fundamentals of being successful in business.

About three years ago, Deeb started a monthly podcast.

“It’s a great way to reach my audience because they can listen in their car or their office,” he said. “[The podcasts] are designed to help people move forward, to feel that they’re OK, that there are ups and downs of being in sales and in business. The purpose of the podcast is to help people in their journey, not just in business, but their journey of life as well.”

Reflecting on his career, Deeb noted how technology has revolutionized the real estate industry.

“When I got into the business in 1983 we had no cell phones, no internet,” he said. “You were considered high-tech if you had a fax machine. We didn’t have the resources. Today there’s no excuse for real estate agents to not be extremely successful because the resources are abundant.”
