CEOs for CODE

GREATER OMAHA CHAMBER’S COMMITMENT TO DEI In June 2020, the Greater Omaha Chamber hosted leaders representing approximately 150 Omaha businesses and organizations with a shared objective of initiating action to cultivate more diverse, equitable and inclusive places to work — and ultimately influencing similar transformation for the community. The initiative was called CEOs for CODE (Commitment to Opportunity, Diversity and Equity). A list of necessary actions was developed at the time, which included learning about the history and ongoing effects of systemic racism in Omaha, listening to people in marginalized groups, supporting nonprofit agencies that focus on underserved populations, using leaders’ influence to amplify unheard voices and endorse policies leading to racial justice, and fostering opportunity and success for people of color in the workplace. Perhaps the most important action was the intention to continue the conversation through ongoing CEOs for CODE meetings and activities, like the annual conference taking place this year on October 20. More than 300 executives have now signed the commitment statement. In August, the Greater Omaha Chamber hosted a workshop called “Strategic Doing for an Inclusive Omaha” that focused on five topics: “Top Notch Health Care, Transportation and Housing for Everyone,” “Rebranding: Omaha Is for Everyone - An Epicenter of Opportunity,” “A Thriving, Diverse Workforce

with more Representation in Leadership,” “New, Innovative, and Inclusive Models of Education and Development,” and “Cultivating a Diverse, Interconnected Community.” The content for the workshop was seeded in conversations had by CEOs involved in the CODE initiative since its inception, said Nebraska Methodist College President and CEO Deb Carlson. “One of the things that kept coming up was, ‘How do we attract and retain employees, especially top talent?’ The research is pretty clear that companies that prioritize inclusion are more likely to retain and attract top talent from diverse backgrounds,” Carlson explained. “So, it’s good for the companies when they start prioritizing inclusion; also, employees looking for that are more likely to stay with companies. They want to feel valued, respected; they want to have opportunities for growth and advancement.” The Strategic Doing method, associated with Purdue University, is an approach to strategy that emphasizes action, Carlson said, describing it as a “model and a process.” “We’ve been trained in Strategic Doing, so I offered one of my facilitators, Jillian Krumbach (NMC’s dean of professional development and community partnerships), to be the facilitator,” she said. “So, we were the trainers and we were the facilitators for that.”

We are not just talking about all the things that we could do, but, of course, putting some true action behind it. - DELL NARED JR., SENIOR DIRECTOR OF DIVERSITY, EQUITY & INCLUSION, GREATER OMAHA CHAMBER

Workshop participants were asked to consider two organizational assets they were willing to share or give away, such as relevant expertise, tangible resources like facilities or equipment, professional connections, and financial resources. “I think the thing that was interesting about my experience at Strategic Doing was that I happened to have an extraordinary table,” said Tri-Faith Initiative Executive Director & co-founder Wendy Goldberg. “The intention of everyone around my table was to bring the strengths of each of our organizations to the betterment of a project for Omaha. It wasn’t to come up with a new idea, it was to say, ‘How do we know what currently matters in our world?’” For example, Goldberg said her group discussed — among other things — some Omahans’ lack of access to appropriate shelter during extreme heat, especially in crisis events like power outages following severe storms. Discussion centered on what each organization could offer toward viable solutions. “As much as it is about everyone having access to a place to be cool and safe, it’s about people in leadership offering the best of what they have for

people, particularly at their hardest time,” she explained. Every group at the workshop came up with unique insights and strategies, said Dell Nared Jr., senior director of diversity, equity & inclusion for the Chamber. The end goal is real-world implementation. “There will be a portion during the [October CODE] conference where all those individual groups will be able to report on what they’ve been working on,” he said. “There will be a lot that’s covered on mapping an action standpoint of what’s been delivered, or what they’ve accomplished. But then also, ‘How do we think bigger about what we can accomplish?’” Dialogue is certainly important, Nared said, but movement starting at the top of an organization is key. “We are not just talking about all the things that we could do, but, of course, putting some true action behind it. I appreciate the partnership that we have across all of our members that are willing to show up and have these conversations, because I’m a true believer that every voice strengthens our outcome, and we’re doing that from a CEO perspective,” he said. “I’ve come CONTINUED

to understand that the executive leaders [are] the true decision-makers — while they may gather input and advice from their overall employees, and individuals who report to them will ultimately have the direct decision to listen or not — and actually, truly drive change. It’s about making sure those individuals have a space to be honest and candid but also learn from one another. I think having that group of closely-knitted C-suite individuals and CEOs — where they can have candid conversations around how they’re making the workplace more equitable but also some of the challenges that they’re facing — being able to talk through that as it happens is important.” “People in seats of influence like the C-suite have the business connections to make the investment, to make sure that we have strong leaders and a commitment to being people- centered,” Goldberg said. “We have the resources to get things done,” Carlson said, adding that

working with top executives can mean bypassing a chain of approvals. “It seems like it gets done faster when you involve the CEOs ... And that’s why Strategic Doing works so well when you have the decision-makers in the room.” Nared emphasized that DEI practitioners within organizations are major players, too, when it comes to carrying out those decisions. “Yes, it starts at the top level, but then also the individuals who are charged with making sure you have outcomes and the organization is still moving in the right direction,” he said. “So, my mission for the Greater Omaha Chamber overseeing CODE … is to work with the Omaha Chamber membership base, to help them drive diversity, equity and inclusion and also accessibility in the workplace to create a more vibrant and sustainable environment for individuals to work.”

Executive Q & A

DIVERSITY & inclusion

STRATEGIC DOING FOR AN INCLUSIVE OMAHA

CEOs involved in the Greater Omaha Chamber’s CEOs for CODE (Commitment to Opportunity, Diversity and Equity) initiative participated in an August workshop using the Strategic Doing method, associated with Purdue University, for developing plans of action. Five of the participants discuss the event and what’s next.

KIMBERLY C. BARNES

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, CASA FOR DOUGLAS COUNTY CASAOMAHA.ORG Q. What is one of your biggest takeaways from the ‘Strategic Doing for an Inclusive Omaha’ workshop held in August? A. The greatest takeaway was the importance of moving into action to impact the community in a positive way. Inclusivity and equity are very important to the growth of a community, and the work cannot stay in the planning mode in order to be effective. Q. Why do you feel it is important for C-suite executives to lead conversation and action around DEIA? A. Senior leaders need to direct the tone and lead the work. It is the responsibility of the leader to identify gaps in areas that need change and to strategize to make changes. Additionally, it is the responsibility of the leader to engage others so their voice is heard, in order to elevate the work that needs to be done. Leaders who intentionally infuse strategy with race equity can weaken structural racism through a race-conscious lens due to their position of leadership.

WAYNE BROWN

PRESIDENT AND CEO, URBAN LEAGUE OF NEBRASKA URBANLEAGUENEB.ORG Q. What are some of your biggest takeaways from the ‘Strategic Doing for an Inclusive Omaha’ workshop held in August? A. 1) The importance of diversity and inclusion in the tech industry. A diverse workforce is more innovative and productive, and it’s essential to creating a tech industry that works for everyone. We need to make sure that we are creating opportunities for people from all backgrounds to succeed in tech. 2) There is need for more strategic thinking in how we recruit and retain young workers from diverse backgrounds in Nebraska. We need to be more intentional about how we use technology, entertainment, and culture to solve problems and create a better future. We need to think about the long-term impact of our decisions and make sure that we are using technology to create a more equitable and sustainable world. 3) The power of collaboration. The tech industry is at its best when we work together to share ideas and solve problems. The CEOs for CODE conference was a great example of the power of collaboration. We came together from different industries and backgrounds to learn from each other and develop ideas for how to make Omaha a more inclusive space. I’m excited to see what we can accomplish together in the future as we work to create a more inclusive and equitable Nebraska. Q. Why do you feel it is important for C-suite executives to lead conversation and action around DEIA? A. C-suite executives have a platform and a responsibility to lead conversation and action around diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility (DEIA). Nebraska’s future depends on today’s leaders to create the place where Generation Z wants to live.

CHANDA CHACÓN, MPH, FACHE PRESIDENT AND CEO, CHILDREN’S NEBRASKA CHILDRENSNEBRASKA.ORG

Q. What is one of your biggest takeaways from the ‘Strategic Doing for an Inclusive Omaha’ workshop held in August? A. In the August workshop, it was apparent that regardless of our business focus, inclusivity was a universally shared priority. The group also recognized that there was not one source, one project or one person able to address the issue alone; we all must work together. We are a community rich in resources, but sometimes lacking in connections. The workshop helped us start to build key connections in a tangible way. Q. Why do you feel it is important for C-suite executives to lead conversation and action around DEIA? A. C-suite executives are responsible for identifying the strategic needs of the organization within the context of their internal goals and the external environment. They also set the expectations for the culture that supports achieving those strategies. Leadership connections like those made through CODE enable those who lead to create synergies across organizations to accelerate the pace of change regarding the important issues of DEIA in a way that no one organization can do alone.

CHRIS SUND

PRESIDENT, UNITI MED UNITIMED.COM Q. What is one of your biggest takeaways from the ‘Strategic Doing for an Inclusive Omaha’ workshop held in August? A. I walked away from the Strategic Doing event energized at helping create strategies from the information we received. We paired up leaders from all over Omaha into small groups, and we tackled common issues we all face and came up with real-life solutions to help make an impact. I still continue to meet with that small group of leaders every few weeks to continue working on ways we can make a difference. Q. Why do you feel it is important for C-suite executives to lead conversation and action around DEIA? A. It’s important for executives to lead conversations and action around diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) because their leadership sends a powerful message throughout their organization. The commitment needs to start at the top, and their involvement demonstrates making it a priority, which is essential for creating a diverse and inclusive workplace culture. These leaders have the authority and resources to drive meaningful change. They can allocate budgets, implement policies, and establish initiatives that promote DEIA. Their leadership can also help hold the organization accountable for progress and ensure that DEIA is integrated into the company’s long-term strategy. When a leader makes DEIA a priority they can make a profound difference by fostering innovation, uplifting morale, and forging a path toward a more equitable and inclusive future for our community.

CARMEN TAPIO

CEO, NORTH END TELESERVICES, LLC NORTHENDTELESERVICES.COM Q. Why do you feel it is important for C-suite executives to lead conversation and action around DEIA? A. It’s important for C-suite executives to lead the action behind DEIA because they are uniquely positioned in their organizations to make decisions that remove obstacles and barriers as it relates to diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility. Having the appropriate and necessary DEIA initiatives requires a commitment from the very top of the organization to move beyond conversation and conceptualization to a concrete strategy that results in measurable action. Each executive should be able to see, lead and actualize DEIA. DEIA statistics indicate the equitable benefits of DEIA in the workplace: diverse companies enjoy, on average, 2.5 times higher cash flow per employee. Diverse management has been shown to increase corporate revenue by an average of 19%. Gender-diverse companies and executive teams outperform less gender-diverse peers. It is the right thing to do. We need accountable and invested business leaders to develop concrete solutions to address the root causes of the lack of diversity and accessibility in the workplace. Page 10 • October 13, 2023

LEADING THE CHARGE FOR DIVERSITY AND EQUITY IN THE WORKPLACE BY MICHELLE LEACH

CAMMY WATKINS

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, INCLUSIVE COMMUNITIES

In an ideal world, our differences would be celebrated and we would all have an equal playing field to rise to our fullest potential. Midlands organizations are intentionally and strategically moving the dial on this front, taking direct aim at the large and growing body of research that further underlines and quantifies the inequities that so many experience on a day-to-day basis. These groups are helping and partnering with others to lift their respective businesses, organizations and communities. Such heavy lifting requires strong leadership. When asked about both challenges and progress related to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) efforts, Cammy Watkins, executive director of Inclusive Communities, pointed to the latest “Women in the Workplace” report by McKinsey and LeanIn.org. The report surveyed more than 40,000 employees at upwards of 300 organizations. “[The McKinsey report] talks about women in the workplace and what they are looking for, and why so many are leaving for smaller businesses or to start their own businesses due to the lack of flexibility in ‘traditional’ office spaces,” Watkins said. The report characterizes this shift as the “Great Breakup,” noting that women are “demanding more from work and are leaving companies in unprecedented numbers to get it.” In fact, reportedly, women leaders are switching jobs at never-before-seen rates – and at higher rates than men in leadership, which the report surmises “could have serious implications for companies.” Watkins referenced its LeadDIVERSITY and Transformational Leadership programming, the latter of which she said is designed for leaders who are just starting to explore opportunities to improve DEI competencies as a means of enhancing business effectiveness and prosperity. “That program is a shorter time commitment and is specifically directed at building individual skills, as opposed to the collective impact focus of LeadDIVERSITY,” she said. “We host two classes of that program a year; one that started in August and the other that starts in January.”

ALICIA FRIEZE

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR, COUNCIL BLUFFS AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

The organization is also a member of the Council Bluffs Area Chamber of Commerce, whose Workforce Development Director Alicia Frieze suggested as among those local resources for readers seeking DEI and unconscious bias training. She said that such training is beneficial for individuals, organizations and teams before someone advances into a leadership position. “[They should have] a solid understanding of DEI and be aware of their own unconscious biases,” Frieze added. “So, they don’t negatively impact their leadership or the culture of the organization.” Frieze noted findings by Forbes that stated that companies with a focus on DEI increased employee productivity and morale by 77% and 67%, respectively, while turnover was reduced by a reported 58%. “Knowing these statistics, it is important for the CB Chamber to provide training opportunities for teams and resources for our businesses as a vehicle to get to see these positive results locally,” she explained. “Helping businesses understand what DEI is, how to have a diverse workforce, an inclusive hiring process and equitable policies and culture, will help with recruitment and retention.” Accordingly, Frieze said the chamber has updated its policies and procedures to ensure they are more inclusive and allow leadership to treat everyone equitably. “We have included a diversity and inclusion statement on our website, as well,” she said. “We have developed a dedicated page to DEI that includes resources and members that work in the realm of DEI as an extended resource for members to receive or provide DEI training to their team.” Frieze said other DEI offerings include Women Inspiring Women, Executive Women Partnership, and Impact CB (for young professionals), CB Tech Career Acceleration (focused on providing Latino residents free access to IT training from AIM Institute and career placement assistance), and L.I.F.T. (Leveraging Individual Female Talent, a six-month mentorship program for females who have been out of the workforce for more than a year).

Building Strong Communities

Promoting diversity and the economy is central to the Midlands African Chamber’s (MAC) mission. “Investing in diversity at the executive level helps create a more inclusive business environment,” said President Karine Sokpoh. “It reflects a commitment to providing equal opportunities for all, irrespective of their backgrounds, which can lead to a richer and more diverse talent pool.” Additionally, Sokpoh attributed MAC’s investments in training opportunities through its Power Hour and MAC Xcelerator programming to better decision-making and innovation driven by diverse teams within today’s global business landscape. “By nurturing diversity in executive roles, [MAC] positions itself and its members for a competitive advantage in the market,” she stated. Rounding out motivations for such resources and support, Sokpoh referred to community engagement and talent attraction. “When businesses in the Midlands African Chamber support diversity and leadership initiatives, they enhance their relationships with the local community, fostering goodwill and collaboration,” she said. “Companies that invest in leadership and inclusion programs are more likely to attract top talent and retain employees. Individuals from diverse backgrounds are more likely to stay with organizations that value and support their growth.” Overall, Sokpoh concluded that such resources and offerings reflect a proactive approach to enhancing skills and fostering diversity that informs positive outcomes for businesses and communities. When putting the numbers to such themes, she cited statistics courtesy of talent firm Insight Global; for instance, how companies that are “diverse” earn 2.5 times higher cash flow per employee than less diverse teams, with inclusive organizations also driving more than 35% better productivity and better decision-making 87% of the time. “From the Midlands African Chamber’s perspective, the interrelationship between diversity, equity, and inclusion and career advancement within the organization should be a deeply intertwined and mutually reinforcing one,” Sokpoh summed up. She referred to efforts to ensure career advancement is accessible

to all members, regardless of background. “This means that diversity and inclusion should be at the core of talent development and succession planning,” she explained. Sokpoh also emphasized initiatives to cultivate a diverse talent pool at all levels, for instance, recruitment from diverse sources. In addition, she underscored striving for leadership teams that elect the diversity of both team members and the broader community. “This representation can inspire and serve as role models for others, reinforcing the belief that advancement is achievable for all,” she added. Sokpoh encouraged leaders to educate themselves on: • Equitable skill development to address historical disparities • Mentorship and sponsorship — formal programs to support, guide and advocate for employees’ advancement • Transparency and fairness in promotion processes • Feedback and continuous improvement facilitated by open feedback channels • Accountability in achieving diversity/inclusion goals

Leading Transformative Change

Inclusive Communities’ programming leadership provided additional insights into the challenges and solutions that their teams grapple with and provide. “One recent insight discussed in our workshops that has resonated with me, pertains to a recent CDC report,” said Director of Programs Dominic Green. “It highlights that one in four people live with a disability; however, when examining reported HR statistics, only 3% to 5% of individuals openly disclose their disability to their employer or team.” This discrepancy, according to Green, suggests a significant portion of the population refrains from sharing this information due to concerns about how they may be treated or what the response might entail. “Even if we account for individuals who are retired or not currently in the workforce, there remains a substantial number of people who do not openly acknowledge their disability, exceeding the reported figures,” he said.

No one should ever feel marginalized or MIDLANDS excludedBUSINESS JOURNAL due to a lack of understanding or because their identity or way of being doesn’t align with societal norms. DOMINIC GREEN, DIRECTOR OF PROGRAMS, INCLUSIVE COMMUNITIES

The array of opportunities to develop leadership skills is driving diverse workspaces and experiences at all levels, according to Veronica Smith (her name has been changed for safety purposes). “The approach to our programming is truly dialogue-based and all-inclusive, allowing leadership to take place at every level of an organization,” she stated. “We often say, ‘Lead from the seat you are in.’ Leadership ability and capacity are not tied to a title … cultivating the skills to have courageous and inclusive conversations around equity throughout an organization is extremely valuable.” To that end, she referenced both free, community-based dialogue on topics of equity and social justice on a monthly virtual/in-person hybrid experience, as well as workshops and services to develop specific skills. “We work with organizations ranging from, but not limited to, universities, community organizations, corporations, school districts, and health care institutions,” she said. “We also have a speakers bureau for organizations looking to bring a subject matter expert in to address a particular topic with their audience.” Green reinforced how investing in its programs and offerings, at its core, promotes a “profound sense of humanity.”

“It is our fundamental belief that no one should experience discomfort or fear in the presence of their neighbors or colleagues simply because they may appear or behave differently,” he said. “No one should ever feel marginalized or excluded due to a lack of understanding or because their identity or way of being doesn’t align with societal norms.” There exists the universal desire, he continued, to be treated with the same dignity and respect that is extended to one’s neighbors, friends and family. “The essence of this work lies in building and nurturing relationships,” Green added. “When individuals begin to recognize this and open themselves to it, we witness the potential for meaningful change to take root and flourish.” And their efforts are bearing fruit. “We have seen a shift towards more equity and inclusion in our region,” Smith said. “We believe that this is in no small part due to the coalitions of leaders we support committed to a vision of a society strengthened by diversity, inclusion, respect, equity and justice for all people.”

REPRESENTATION IN CONSTRUCTION STARTS WITH ACCESS BY DWAIN HEBDA

KRIS MONTGOMERY OMAHA MARKET LEADER, MCCARTHY BUILDING COMPANIES, INC.

Asking Ashley Kuhn, president of Blair Freeman in Omaha, about diversity, equity and inclusion in the construction industry is like asking her for a retrospective of her career. For Kuhn, who with business partner Maranda Adams created the construction company, DEI is much more powerful than a company initiative. It’s been the foundation of their company since day one. “We have been there,” Kuhn said. “We understand the barriers that we ran into as women-owned and as minority-owned, so we understand the stresses that our trade partners are under.”

Turning Tide

Across America, the construction field is changing. Besieged by decades of shrinking numbers of trade workers and pressed on all sides to diversify,

the industry is inviting more women and minorities to a seat at the table. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, 43% of members in the National Institute of Building Sciences had some DEI program in place and local construction experts said there are noticeably more minorities and women in the local construction industry as well. The changes are not only a matter of social and economic justice but also because research is showing that diversity pays dividends in the workplace. According to builtin.com, diverse companies achieve 2.5 times higher cash flow per employee, achieve higher revenue and result in work teams that are more engaged and make better business decisions. Not to put too fine a point on things, but recent regulatory actions, including 2021’s Executive Order 13985 by President Joe Biden, demands more attention be paid to the level of DEI brought to the bidding process by would-be government contractors.

The ability to scale from a one- or two-person shop MIDLANDS to a largeBUSINESS JOURNAL employer can be a tough jump, especially when the owner is both the back-office support and the physical labor in the field. ASHLEY KUHN, PRESIDENT, BLAIR FREEMAN

Industry experts say it isn’t that construction companies don’t recognize the tides shifting toward a more diverse workplace. The problem, they say, is change isn’t happening fast enough. “The construction industry has become more inclusive in hiring and promoting women and minorities, however, there is still a sizable discrepancy for women and minorities,” said Kris Montgomery, Omaha market leader, McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. “Advancements are still needed to create opportunities and cultivate environments conducive to everyone succeeding without barriers.” The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the vast majority of individuals in the construction field are still white (87.3%) and male (89.1%). The Hispanic community has steadily made inroads into these jobs, representing 34.2% of the construction workforce, but growth among Black and Asian workers has been slower. In 2022, 7% of workers were Black and 2.1% were Asian.

Women have grown to occupy 11% of construction industry jobs, but a closer look at the breakdown of these positions shows something more nuanced. According to the National Association of Home Builders’ 2022 data, women made up less than 4% of trades and labor jobs and were underrepresented in leadership roles. “It is rare to find companies now that do not have some form of diversity,” Kuhn said. “However, many are still failing to have women directly involved on jobs, rather stacking their marketing, accounting or sales departments with these roles.”

Growing Pains

Kuhn also said there are market factors that help explain the slow pace of change that go beyond mere prejudice. She said working with some woman- and minority-owned businesses presents the same challenge as any other relatively new firm in the marketplace. CONTINUED

“Diverse trade partners are typically newer companies and do not have negotiated rates for supplies, material and equipment,” she said. “For instance, a 50-year-old paint company would have a history of purchasing volumes, likely owns their own lifts, supplies and equipment necessary to do the job, so they do not have the added burden of leasing. This difference leaves diverse trade partners at a disadvantage when in a competitive bid situation. “Diverse trade partners also typically do not have as much back-office support as other firms due to overhead. Quite often the owner is both the labor on the project and the back-office support such as procurement, estimating, contracting, marketing, sales, billing and receivables. This burden allows them to spend less time on job sites, which means that their schedules for completion take longer.” Having said that, industry figures agree that more can and should be done to help diversify the construction field at all levels. “At JE Dunn, it’s a company-wide goal and commitment to build a diverse and inclusive workplace,” said Jason Studt, vice president of

JE Dunn Omaha. “Our action plan includes three initiatives: workforce, workplace and marketplace. We strive to attract diverse, engaged talent; to take care and celebrate all aspects of diversity in our current talent pool; and to support small-emerging and minority and women-owned businesses throughout our community, which includes engaging diverse trade partners and providing resources for local companies that are looking for support.”

Support System

As proof of this commitment, Studt said 2023 was JE Dunn’s inaugural year for its Minority Contractor Development Program. The company interviewed and selected 10 minority-owned small construction-related businesses to participate in an eight-month training program that meets for eight hours per month on the finer points of running a successful construction business including leadership, human resources, marketing/ business development, legal, financial, documentation, estimating/bidding and other topics. “The purpose of this program is win-win,” Studt said. “We develop

these companies into commercial builders that we can do business with and it benefits our city by creating generational wealth and jobs in underserved communities. This will be a reoccurring, yearly program that will continue into perpetuity. Our Kansas City office has been doing this program for 15-plus years and has seen a dramatic improvement in the quality of the minority contracting community.” The company also launched two new employee resource groups, adding to its existing ERGs serving women and minorities, to strengthen relationships and to foster education, networking, professional development, mentoring and leadership opportunities. “JE Dunn’s ERGs are designed to support our diverse employees and increase engagement, offering people an opportunity to make a lasting difference across the organization as they navigate their careers,” Studt said. “ERGs are voluntary, employee-initiated and employee-led groups aligned with the vision and guiding principles of the organization. In 2023, we launched the Hispanic ERG with the purpose to unite our Hispanic employee community and provide a space of support. In 2023, we also launched our Veterans ERG.”

Changing the Environment

Kuhn agreed that more needs to be done both internally and externally to help construction professionals and entrepreneurs grow in the kind

of business acumen needed to qualify them for larger projects and professional advancement. She said business practices from established firms go a long way toward expanding these opportunities. “The ability to scale from a one- or two-person shop to a large employer can be a tough jump, especially when the owner is both the back-office support and the physical labor in the field,” she said. “Access to the correct capital to allow this growth to be quicker and on a larger scale is necessary to scale, but often hard for diverse subcontractors and suppliers to get. “Our office helps estimate, review estimates once they are in, put contingencies in our budgets to allow for mistakes on behalf of smaller diverse and growing companies. This trust in our partnerships creates a familial bond with our trade partners. Our jobs accomplish, on average, 82% diverse partners and although admittedly it is a burden on time, budget and oversight, the impact is tremendous.” Montgomery said in addition to a range of internal DEI programs targeting employee education and subcontractor development, McCarthy Building Cos. has been aggressive in its commitment to developing the future workforce. “McCarthy has long partnered with industry organizations, trade schools and high schools to introduce construction as a rewarding career option,” he said. “We often begin as early as elementary school to start the conversation. “In 2020 McCarthy partnered with five of our industry peers to work together to advance diversity, equity and inclusion across the entire construction industry. In Omaha and Lincoln, McCarthy has applied innovative recruiting strategies, such as partnering with Prairie STEM to host Girls in STEAM community events, Metro Community College, ACE Mentors and outreach through our client, Omaha Public Schools. We have also implemented a project coordinator program to pair recent high school graduates from diverse backgrounds with a seasoned McCarthy project manager to work full-time on a local project while also attending college or trade school. After a year in the program, McCarthy provides a tuition waiver for their education and an opportunity to transition to a salaried position after graduation.”

Paying it Forward

The short-term goal of all of these efforts is to enrich the local industry and improve access for all, but the long-term implications are far more

substantial as each small company nurtured today is inspired to do its part to continue to widen opportunities in the future. Daniel Felder, CEO of Axiom Construction Group, who has been mentored through JE Dunn’s programs, is a prime example of this pay-it-forward mentality. “This industry has its own ecosystem,” he said. “It takes businesses at all levels, large and small, to maintain vibrancy and a healthy balance. We are seeing a shift due in part to progressive policies and the will of business owners to see change happen in our industry. One example we have personally experienced at Axiom is the mentor-protegee program certified through our local government. “In an effort to not just give us a contract but teach us how to grow a generational company, JE Dunn has opened its doors to us, allowing us to walk side by side with all levels of professionals in their organization and supporting our efforts of being a mentor to other diverse firms by sharing best practices that we have learned and implemented. That is a full circle organic approach to healing our ecosystem.”

SMALL BUSINESS

EDUCATION REBECCA MILLER, FOUNDER, FIXLEXIA. (COURTESY OF NEBRASKA BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTER)

Unspoken Reality FIXLEXIA OFFERS HOPE TO STUDENTS WITH DYSLEXIA If you know five people, chances are you know someone who lives with a learning disability. Yale Center for Dyslexia & Creativity estimates of the individuals with a learning disability, nearly 80% have a form of dyslexia. Rebecca Miller, founder of FixLexia, saw it consistently during her 15 years running a tutoring company in Omaha. “My husband has a really good phrase for it,” she said. “It’s a problem everywhere and nowhere at the same time.”

Overwhelming Need

Before opening FixLexia, Miller and her husband operated a Club Z! Tutoring franchise for 15 years that provided services for 3,200 students. They had also built relationships with public and private schools and state agencies. “In our work, I found pervasive reading issues,” she said. “What we embarked on [next] was opening Nebraska’s first dyslexia clinic.” Opened in 2015, FixLexia provides clinical evaluations to determine if a child meets eligibility for a language or literacy disorder, dyslexia being one

of the most common ones. “There are neural networks in our brain that help us match speech sounds with letters. Individuals with dyslexia have difficulty efficiently making those connections,” Miller said.

Rampant Misinformation

Because individuals with dyslexia have a hard time translating sounds to letters, many incorrectly assume that it’s a hearing on vision-based disorder. “It’s not. We call it a deficit in the core phonological component of language,” she said. “One of the myths is that reading is primarily a visual task. It’s not. We use visual memory for the storage and retrieval of individual letters, but we do not retrieve individual words. We store and retrieve them from a phonological system.” One of the other significant misconceptions Miller hears regularly is that individuals living with dyslexia aren’t trying hard enough, or their parents aren’t doing enough.

Page 24 • October 13, 2023

MIDLANDS BUSINESS JOURNAL BY SAVANNAH BEHRENDS

Parents are the frontline diagnostician. They know something’s not quite right, but they don’t know exactly what to do about it. - REBECCA MILLER, FOUNDER, FIXLEXIA

“I have never met a kid that does not want to learn to read,” she said. “I have met frustrated kids. I have met kids that have given up. I have met heartbroken kids that just want to learn how to read.”

Delayed Identification

One of the challenges facing children with dyslexia is that parents and teachers often don’t begin to notice an issue until after Pre-K, Grade 1, and Grade 2 “where we can make the most gain.” “If we used evidence-based instruction, like structured literacy, in school it would be good for all kids. The difference is kids with dyslexia need it earlier, more intensively, and for longer periods of time,” she said. Presently Miller said many children are taught using balanced literacy, which maintains that the more a child reads, the better they get. That’s why a misconception persists that children who aren’t excelling in reading aren’t trying hard enough, or being given interesting content. Structured literacy, on the other hand, is modeled by the teacher systematically and sequentially, which helps build foundational skills such as decoding words.

Potential Crossover

The evaluations to determine if a child has dyslexia take about 15-17 hours and are performed by a licensed speech-language pathologist and a specialist in the special education field. For the past five years, after the evaluation, an intervention plan was developed using the structured literacy model, including coursework from the American Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators and Dr. David Kilpatrick’s program“Equipped for Reading Success.” Children would often come to the clinic after school to work with the

instructional staff, similar to tutoring. However, that will change soon as FixLexia moves to an evaluationonly practice. “Schools are beginning to bring some of these pieces in,” Miller said. “With regard to the instruction, it’s not very robust.” But, she said, it could become a “too many hands in the cookie jar” situation. “They’re going to school during the day and possibly learning two methods of how to read. Then after school, they’re going to the clinic,” she said. “It’s too much and it’s not the right thing to do by kids.”

Considering Impact

Miller contends that there is plenty of work to be done in the evaluation space, and while they will no longer be providing interventions they will provide resources. The move will also allow her to spend more time contemplating how she can make a greater impact in Nebraska for kids and educators. “At the end of the day I may see 100 kids in my clinic,” she said. “But, if we can make teacher training accessible, one teacher is going to see 25 kids a year [then we could help more kids]. If you have one school with four first-grade classes, that’s 100 kids per year.” Providing structured literacy instruction in school would also eliminate financial barriers for families, and reduce stigma. Miller encourages parents to call FixLexia for a complimentary consultation if they suspect their child might have dyslexia. “Parents are the frontline diagnostician,” she said. “They know something’s not quite right, but they don’t know exactly what to do about it.”

RTG BUILDING SERVICES INC: A SPOTLIGHT ON ITS CONTINUED FEDERAL JANITORIAL CONTRACT AT THE LUKEVILLE LAND PORT OF ENTRY ARIZONA To obtain a federal contract a company must have the capability and experience to stand out from the competition, to build a business relationship with the government, credentials and the quality of work must exceed expectations. This is something RTG Building Services has demonstrated by consecutively holding a disputed janitorial contract with the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), at the Lukeville Land Port of Entry in Arizona. Custodial services, construction and commercial cleaning, floor, and window care, are amongst the areas of expertise of RTG Building services. Based out of Omaha, Nebraska, they have the capability of working for other regions that have even reached the state of Arizona. Aside from being a Hispanic American Owned Small Business/DBE/MBE, being a SAM registered company, and being a U.S federal contractor, having more than 20 years of experience, makes the business the ideal candidate to provide janitorial services to the government and to satisfy the cleaning needs of large corporations. Part of the U.S. Customs and Protection network, The Lukeville Land Port of Entry is one of the world’s largest law enforcement entities. RTG Building Services has the knowledge of their facilities through its extended period of service, key component to focus on protecting this particular land port of entry “It’s very satisfying to be trusted and get the opportunity to perform a large contract for the U. S Government” mentioned Ramiro Gaitan, President. RTG Building Services is led by President Ramiro Gaitan, and Vice President Fred McBride, GSA, the U.S Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S Air Force, and the U.S. Strategic Command, are amongst their satisfied customers currently receiving janitorial and specialized window care services. The following are some guidelines to consider when posting legal notices with the Midlands Business Journal: 1. Submit a written notice in either Microsoft Word or as a PDF document either through mbj.com or through the Legal Department at legals@ mbj.com. For trade names, submit a copy of approved (bar code in upper right hand corner) Application For Registration of Trade Name from the Secretary of State to the same email address. Please include your billing address and the desired duration you’d like your notice to run (trade names run for only one week). As a publisher and not a legal advisor we print notices exactly as they are submitted and therefor only comp reruns when the notice was rejected or messed up due to a MBJ error. All companies submitting notices are responsible for ensuring the content fits with the State’s requirements and are responsible for the cost of republishing the notice if it is rejected due to misinformation or missing information 2. You will receive a confirmation and price quote. Legal notices, except for trade names, are charged per line. The flat fee for a trade name is $50. Payment is now credit or debit card. 3. Deadline is 5 p.m. on Monday for a notice to start publishing that Friday. 4. All costs include fees to file the notice with the Secretary of State and/or any appropriate courts. 5. Invoices must be paid prior to publication.

Why Nebraska Hospital Association partners with Bellevue University to offer valuable education benefits.

“NHA’s partnership with Bellevue University goes back 19 years when we launched the NHA Leadership Institute.”

“Nearly 19 years ago, NHA

approached Bellevue University to co-develop our healthcare leadership program for our members and their employees. The response has been overwhelming. To date, more than 600 Nebraska hospital leaders have graduated from the NHA Leadership Institute. In 2016, the program received the “Power of A” Award from the ASAE (Center for Association Leadership) for extraordinary contributions and efforts to enrich lives, create a more competitive workforce, drive innovation, and make a better world.

JON BORTON Vice President NHA Services, Inc. Nebraska Hospital Association

Building on Bellevue University’s collaboration and innovation, today the partnership includes expert meeting facilitation, training and development, and supplemental tuition assistance for our employees and member hospitals.”

Bellevue University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (hlcommission.org). Bellevue University is committed to providing an environment that is free from harassment and discrimination based upon race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, genetic information, military obligations, or status in any other group protected by local, state, or federal law.
