COVER story SHANNON JACKSON, OWNER OF HEAVI HITTERS BARBERSHOP.

Making History

WOMAN-OWNED BARBERSHOP HEAVI HITTERS EXPANDS When Shannon Jackson opened Heavi Hitters in 2019, the licensed barber and salon made history. “We are the first LGBT-owned salon, barbershop and tattoo parlor in the Omaha-Benson area,” Jackson said. “We are different in many ways. But, first, by making history.” Heavi Hitters may very well be distinctive for its notable growth; within three years, the business had outpaced available space and expanded into a larger shop at 6570 Maple St. “My last shop was a step in my growth,” Jackson said. “I also had a business partner. This new shop is all mine and my wife’s.” To better understand this journey, we go back a few decades, to when Jackson was kid. “I have been cutting hair since I can remember,” she said. “At the age

of 14, I started to gain clientele.” Ultimately, Jackson earned her barber’s license and landed in the former shop, which was then owned by an entrepreneur who lived outside of the state. “I started to rent my space from him summer of 2019,” Jackson explained. “He and the owner of the building had a falling out and their contract ended abruptly.” It was the building owner who approached Jackson with an offer to lease the space. Since then, the business has evolved into a new and expanded shop. “I wanted more for my family,” she said. “I got married and became more invested in my future, goals and life in general. I have always been a person who chooses growth over stagnation.”

Building a Shop and Community

This growth is embodied in more than the square footage of its shop. “In my shop now we offer multiple services,” Jackson stated. “We have four licensed barbers, one licensed cosmetologist and a licensed tattoo artist.” Its offerings, she said, range from locs, haircuts, braids, twists, natural hair care, barbering, silk pressing, extensions and wig installs, to makeup, facials and tattoos. “All are licensed, professional and everyone works with every single hair texture — no matter the curl pattern or permed, relaxed or naturally straight hair,” Jackson added. In addition to the range of services that are now provided by Heavi Hitters, its approach to services also packs a punch. “We offer care,” she said. “We house a community of professionals who care about your hair, skin, well-being and cleanliness. We prioritize being on time, making sure our space is family-friendly … and providing a secure space with consistent services.” Jackson also indicated that as passionate as the team is about careers and delivering on the client experience, they are equally passionate about community values and giving back. This is far more than lip service. CONTINUED

Local media coverage from this spring featured Jackson’s commitment to the community through providing free haircuts to homeless shelters. “I started giving haircuts, free, when I was 15 years old, starting with family, of course, following that, the homeless shelter has and will always have a special place in my heart,” she explained. “I volunteer there at least once a year and I have done this for over five years. Backto-school programs are always a part of our give-backs.” Additionally, Jackson said 2023 marks the second year of Heavi Hitters working with Change of Omaha, a nonprofit focused on eliminating race-based discrimination, revitalizing the community, eradicating food deserts (and food insecurity), and uniting to fight against injustice.

The Heavy Lifting Pays Off

Thus far, the approach to creating community in the shop and outside of its walls appears to be working. “Every single client has loved the space entirely,” Jackson stated. “I still feel like I’m dreaming at times. It has been a swarm of support. It’s almost overwhelming. The most beautiful thing is that we can honestly say we are truly doing what we love.” In fact, team members spoke to the sisterhood and family within Heavi Hitters, as well as the creation of a safe space for all clients – no matter their background. Jackson also acknowledged the support that she has received spiritually and from her wife and family, as well as resources such as Nebraska Enterprise Fund, which specializes, by way of its site, in

investing in the “underserved small and micro business owner.” She indicated NEF has been helpful for funding, as well as for financial growth and support in general. When asked for words of wisdom to share with other Black women who may be forging their own paths in respective industries and businesses, Jackson enthusiastically encouraged them to, “Go for it. Reach out. Network. Don’t you ever think it’s too big – the dream, the business, the support or the success – it’s for you!” “Besides, women who create history are far from perfect,” she said.

“So, why try to be? We support you. And the support may not be next door, but it’s definitely around the corner.” As for Jackson, she is once again choosing growth over stagnation. “My goals are to expand, collaborate and grow in the community,” she said. “I am considering expanding in the career of teaching and hosting events, speaking and continuing to grow within the field of beauty and hair.”

By its very definition, investing refers to dedicating time, money, effort, and energy to particular undertakings or sources with an eye on future growth, profit, and otherwise enriching outcomes. Similarly, Midlands organizations serving the health care, sports, technology, education, ag, and construction industries are re-investing in the community in ways that are as multi-faceted and expansive as the stakeholders and services supported by their respective teams.

In the upcoming spring semester, he added that Creighton Jesuits will affirm their active presence in the community by relocating to a new residence following the recent revitalization of the 24th Street Corridor (between Cass and Cuming streets) in collaboration with the city. Both city and state partnerships are in the works, including improvements to the NCAA Men’s College World Series, and green space and safety features for pedestrians and bicyclists. A decade of “robust enrollment” and evolving needs are keen drivers. “With the majority of our first-year class majoring in health sciences and over 3,100 students enrolled in a health sciences school or college, we are investing to meet the growing demand and need in this field,” he stated. “Outside of Omaha, our innovative 3+1 dual degree nursing program at our campus in Grand Island has seen much success.”

Originally established with Hastings College, the program has expanded to York University, Wayne State College and Concordia University. Outside of the health sciences, strong growth in its Heider College of Business program is fueling several new courses; for instance, Hendrickson referred to its pioneering fintech degree program in partnership with First National Bank of Omaha. Further investment in the community includes programs such as the “Sick and Tired” project, which emphasizes mental health, and the Financial Hope Collaborative, as well as partnerships with organizations such as 75 North and its Highlander Accelerator. Its School of Dentistry and School of Law also maintain community clinic and legal services. And, last month, Creighton announced its Institute for Population Health initiative to address equity and access issues within the community and health care at large. “This institute embodies our mission of service and the roots of Jesuit humanism by uniting our students, faculty and staff with partners to identify solutions that enhance individual well-being and

League One Volleyball (LOVB) is set for success in the Omaha market, announcing in August that the metro would become home to a professional team – joining teams in Madison, Houston, Atlanta and Salt Lake City. “We believe in the power of this market – and for good reason,” said co-founder and CEO Katlyn Gao. “Nebraska’s deep history of volleyball fandom is exemplified in its record-breaking collegiate attendance records. The market has bred incredible athletes, whom we are strongly tied to. Our robust pro roster includes Justine Wong-Orantes and Kelsey Robinson, who both hail from the University of Nebraska.” Gao also referenced established relationships with Nebraska NIL (name, image and likeness) compensated athletes. Familiar names

include Lindsay Krause, Lexi Rodriguez, Harper Murray and Norah Sis. “These athletes will connect with the local LOVB clubs, through in-person clinics and appearances as well as virtual connections,” she said. “Prior to LOVB, club-to-college players would have to go overseas to continue their careers. But we are changing that entire paradigm. Omaha is the perfect market for us to help club to college players carve out an all-new path to pro.” As the pro league team takes the stage, Gao said it will integrate into programming for its club, Premier Nebraska. Premier Nebraska is the highest-ranked club with an all-female leadership group and one of only three clubs in 2023 to qualify a team in the highest division of each age group for USAV Girls Junior Nationals. “This means our pro athletes will train alongside Premier’s players, giving club athletes the opportunity to learn from, witness and build even stronger ties with pro players they admire,” she explained. At launch, the league will reportedly start with six teams in six cities. The pre-season (with scrimmages, friendlies, and exhibitions) kicks off next November before moving into the main season with CONTINUED

official games the following January, running through April. “While volleyball is the fastest growing women’s team sport in the U.S., attracting record-selling crowds in college arenas and prompting millions of people to tune-in to Olympic and NCAA games broadcast on-air, it’s wild to think that there was no professional league in the U.S.,” Gao stated. “Investors, athletes and organizations all knew that it was time for this to change.” A decades-in-the-making venture, Gao said it started with Title IX, the landmark gender equity legislation of 1972. “But we have an advantage – we don’t need to put energy in parity,” she said. “There is no ‘W’ in our league name. Instead, we are building major league volleyball from the ground up and how we are doing it is unlike anyone else in the space.” Furthermore, Gao referenced flipping the script, building leagues with a community-first instead of a top-down approach. “We are being deliberate and disciplined in the markets we choose, tying our pro teams to our clubs to create an ecosystem of fandom from the get-go as our pro players become even more familiar and accessible to our club players and the community at large,” she added.

Empowering Through Tech

Google first broke ground in Nebraska in 2019 with its data center in Papillion and, across the river, it has called Iowa “home” since 2007. Commitments in the Midlands reportedly total upwards of $5 billion in the Council Bluffs facilities (including a recent additional $350 million investment in Iowa) and ground-breaking on a second data center in Northwest Omaha. In fact, the Council Bluffs center represents one of Google’s largest facilities. Furthermore, it was announced in August that it has made a $1.2 billion investment in Nebraska and plans to build a third data center

in Lincoln, with monies being directed toward powering Google Cloud, Gmail, Search, ongoing artificial intelligence innovations, and other digital services. To date, more than $3.4 billion has been invested to fuel full-time and external supplier roles in both states. Its efforts can be felt beyond Google’s walls; according to information provided by the company, it has supported $5.7 billion in economic activity for thousands of Nebraska and Iowa businesses, including nonprofits and creatives, with 289,000 organizations connecting with customers using Google’s free tools for phone calls, bookings, and other interactions. It has also awarded $5-plus million to local schools and nonprofits in the past 14 years. Local representatives also highlighted efforts to address barriers to economic opportunity not limited to the build-out of reportedly one of the largest free public Wi-Fi networks in the country. “Both Iowa and Nebraska have welcomed Google to the community,” said Allie Hopkins, head of data centers, Iowa and Nebraska. “We have built strong partnerships with community leaders, found a workforce full of exceptional talent and found remarkable access to renewable resources within the utility infrastructure — all of which make Iowa and Nebraska great places to build.”

serving on boards and sponsoring events in the community,” said VP Doug Duren. “With significant professional involvement and nearly 30% of our team living in the area, we have deep ties to Sarpy County.” Superintendent Joe Hansen also isolated how the firm is leaving its mark on the industry by investing significant resources in promoting building trades as an alternative career path to the traditional four-year degree. “We have a team that travels to campuses and classrooms to educate K-to-12 students about what the trades offer,” he said. “JE Dunn also understands that there is a great opportunity to help develop up-and-coming women- and minority-owned businesses in our market in order to help shrink the workforce gap.” To accomplish this, the Nebraska team launched the Minority Contractor Development Program.

Grown in Nebraska

Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture’s Recruiting and Communications Coordinator, Andela Taylor, noted several growing programs including the equine industry management program, the agricultural production systems major, and training at the NCTA meat lab and University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Loeffel Meat Laboratory. The latter opportunity is the outgrowth of an examination of the training challenges faced by processors, which was hosted at NCTA’s Curtis campus and included UNL faculty and 28 private sector reps.

“The industry emphasized that it would go a long way if potential hires had a baseline understanding of the industry and potential paths before they started their employment, along with some preliminary training in essential skills,” said NCTA Dean Larry Gossen. “For plants both large and small, such a program would alleviate some of the initial burden of training and would help them better-fit applicants to a position where they would be successful.” Collectively, the Nebraska Department of Education reported that 80% of seventh- through 12th-grade students participated in career and technical education (CTE) courses from 2020-2021. “One of the most encouraging findings was the 29% of Nebraska high school students who concentrated on CTE coursework,” she said.

OMAHA COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

NONPROFIT news

Legacy Giving A CONVERSATION THAT’S FULL OF OPPORTUNITY BY CATHERINE FRENCH MCGILL, JD, CAP®, AEP® GIFT ACCEPTANCE MANAGER, OMAHA COMMUNITY FOUNDATION Charitable giving is an important part of any estate planning conversation. Certainly, legacy-making plans are frequently in the news because of the high-profile people who establish them. Your clients may not realize that they, too, and nearly anyone, really, can leave a legacy to support their favorite charitable causes. By discussing what legacy charitable gifts are, how they work, and then formalizing the client’s plan with the proper documentation, you can help your clients tie up a few of “life’s loose ends” far in advance of when that legacy gift is actually made — and give your client the peace of mind of knowing it will actually get done. Clients’ charitable giving intentions and the possibility of establishing legacy gifts should be a routine and standard topic of any financial or estate planning discussion, right alongside provisions in an estate plan for family and loved ones. Here’s a primer to help you simplify key principles when you discuss legacy giving with your clients. What is a legacy gift? Encourage your clients to think of leaving a charitable legacy as a post-life gift that the client structures in advance. Legacy gifts are often referred to as planned giving. What assets can be used to make a legacy gift? Like the gifts to nonprofit organizations that your clients are already making during their lifetimes, cash, stock, real estate, life insurance, an IRA beneficiary designation (which

is extremely tax effective), are examples of assets that can be used to make a legacy gift. The donation can be expressed in a client’s estate planning documents as a dollar amount, percentage of the whole, or a gift of the assets themselves. Your client will want to choose assets carefully, enlisting your expertise to do so. How can a discussion about legacy gifts help motivate clients? Estate planning can be an uncomfortable topic because, by definition, it requires a client to contemplate mortality. This is likely part of the reason that 40% of Americans say they won’t even consider putting a will in place unless or until their life is in danger. Most clients think charitable giving, though, is a much more pleasant topic than discussing the end of their own lives. That’s why legacy giving is a topic that can help break the ice and pave the way for the broader, essential conversation about overall estate planning. What are some particulars to be aware of? Most legacy gifts can be revoked or altered while the client is alive. This is an important feature to mention to clients who want to include charitable giving in their estate plans but like the idea of flexibility as the overall family and financial picture changes over the years. What tools does the Omaha Community Foundation offer to help? A particularly useful technique for legacy giving is to have your clients establish a fund at the Omaha Community Foundation that spells out their wishes for charitable distributions upon death to specific organizations. The client’s estate planning documents can, in turn, simply name the fund at the Omaha Community Foundation as the beneficiary of charitable bequests. The client can adjust the terms of the fund with the Omaha Community Foundation anytime during their lifetime to reflect evolving charitable priorities. Please contact the Omaha Community Foundation to learn about ways we can partner with you to help your clients with their legacy planning: 402-342-3458 or giving@omahafoundation.org.

Your Partner in Philanthropy Your clients rely on your guidance to make important financial decisions. When it comes to charitable giving, we can partner with you to simplify their giving and amplify their impact.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP

LINCOLN business journal JAY WILKINSON, FOUNDER OF FIRESPRING, WITH THE SBA NEBRASKA LEGACY BUSINESS AWARD. (COURTESY OF FIRESPRING)

Do More Good FIRESPRING AIMS FOR POSITIVE IMPACT Jay Wilkinson is a big believer in daily motivation. The longtime entrepreneur and founder of Firespring has traveled the world to discover the wisdom of the universe and keeps a stack of books on his desk from which to draw inspiration. “Do More Good” is even spelled out in neon on his office wall. But one thing above all else has nourished his entrepreneurial spirit, driving him to think bigger and reach farther, a Stephen Grellet quote that’s lit his line of sight ever since his professional journey began in high school.

“I expect to pass through this world but once,” it reads. “Any good therefore that I can do or any kindness I can show, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it for I shall not pass this way again.” “That quote still hangs here above my desk. It’s been there for my entire adult life,” Wilkinson said. “But it wasn’t until 2013, when the sign was hanging on my mirror above my sink at home, that the words ‘Do it now,’ jumped off the page. I kind of went, ‘What are you doing?’ I came in and told my leadership team I had this idea.”

Page 16 • October 20, 2023

MIDLANDS BUSINESS JOURNAL BY DWAIN HEBDA

A Whole New Ball Game

The idea was to transform Firespring, and the vision Wilkinson had for doing it was unlike anything he had launched before. Until that time, the successful string of companies he’d built all followed the tried-and-true ethics model shared by millions of other entrepreneurs worldwide. The businesses did no harm but didn’t exist to intentionally do good, either. With Firespring, Wilkinson proposed to turn that business model on its head, making way for a new kind of purpose-driven enterprise. “I’d been doing research and I found this thing called Certified B Corporation,” Wilkinson said. “I thought this might be a way to give us structure and guidance and best practices around what it means to be a company that lives by its purpose rather than have aspirations to just be.” What Firespring does is provide clients marketing, printing and various means of digital tools, including services specifically designed to help nonprofits sharpen their messaging and build their brand. What the Lincoln-based company is goes far deeper. As one of the state’s first Certified B Corps – a legal status conferred by 35 states and certified by third-party B Lab – Firespring is required to support ethical, purposeful operations right down to reporting its social and environmental performance. In other words, Wilkinson and his crew are not only judged by what they do in the marketplace but how they do it as it benefits humanity and the good that grows from those efforts.

Good on Purpose

“We had done a lot of things right, things that would benefit the people helping build our company and not necessarily just owners or shareholders,” Wilkinson said. “But just being frank and honest, even though that ethos was present, there were so many years when it disappeared into the sea of uncertainty and frustration that every business goes through, wondering if you’re going to make payroll that week. Things that, still to this day, we struggle with from time to time as we grow and expand. “The Certified B Corporation structure gave us a list of 117 things we, as a business, should consider. It gave us a framework for all these things and it wasn’t any one of those, it was the totality, the wholeness of all of these different possibilities from social, environmental, HR to community involvement. All these things that truly do make a difference in terms of what it means to be a do-more-good business.” To say Firespring was out on a limb is putting it mildly; there were only 1,000 Certified B Corps worldwide in 2014 when the company earned its designation and still only about 6,000 on the planet. Unconventional though it was, the company’s new purpose-driven ethos was amazingly effective, balancing its growth with equally robust community service and ethically responsible behavior both internally and externally.

The World Takes Notice

Every year that passes has elevated the company to another plateau of capstone accomplishments. The company has been recognized nationally in the top tier of industry sales as well as being a “best place to work” and ranking globally for its social, corporate and environmental responsibility. In 2023, Firespring added SBA Nebraska’s Legacy Business award to its resume. “When I got the notification the SBA was going to present this award with us, I was under the impression it was the local SBA coming over to

say thanks,” Wilkinson said. “I did not know there were 70 companies chosen across America on the 70th anniversary of the SBA and the gravitas of the intention behind the award until I literally was in the middle of receiving it. It took me a bit by surprise. It was very humbling to accept it, just an incredible honor.” As for where the company goes from here, Wilkinson admitted that like any business, Firespring has its mountains yet to climb and he’s as ambitious to do good as he ever was to do well. But he’s also been shown by time how, with constancy of purpose, the company can

leverage what’s best in people to achieve great things. “Without question, every human innately desires to feel seen and heard, to feel appreciated and to be part of something that’s bigger than themselves,” he said. “I didn’t realize that in the early days. Some of it was just kind of happenstance, some it happened accidentally, some of it happened with a little bit of intention and then grew into something more. “I don’t see work and life through the lens that they’re somehow two different things anymore. Life is work and work is life. It’s all one thing and the more we bring our wholeness and our humanness into work, the better off we all are. Building intentionally around a cause, where people feel they are part of something bigger, that’s the community aspect of business. Everyone wants to be part of that.”

The following are some guidelines to consider when posting legal notices with the Midlands Business Journal: 1. Submit a written notice in either Microsoft Word or as a PDF document either through mbj.com or through the Legal Department at legals@ mbj.com. For trade names, submit a copy of approved (bar code in upper right hand corner) Application For Registration of Trade Name from the Secretary of State to the same email address. Please include your billing address and the desired duration you’d like your notice to run (trade names run for only one week). As a publisher and not a legal advisor we print notices exactly as they are submitted and therefor only comp reruns when the notice was rejected or messed up due to a MBJ error. All companies submitting notices are responsible for ensuring the content fits with the State’s requirements and are responsible for the cost of republishing the notice if it is rejected due to misinformation or missing information 2. You will receive a confirmation and price quote. Legal notices, except for trade names, are charged per line. The flat fee for a trade name is $50. Payment is now credit or debit card. 3. Deadline is 5 p.m. on Monday for a notice to start publishing that Friday. 4. All costs include fees to file the notice with the Secretary of State and/or any appropriate courts. 5. Invoices must be paid prior to publication.
