50 Mile March

SUPPORTING VETERANS THROUGH COMMUNITY Every veteran matters. That’s the message that participants and volunteers hope to convey each year when they make the 50-mile trek from the Nebraska State Capitol in Lincoln to Nebraska Brewing Co. in Omaha. “It doesn’t matter how many homeless there are in Nebraska. It doesn’t matter how many have PTSD. It matters that there’s one. One is too many,” said Jay Miralles, co-founder and CEO of the 50 Mile March.

In addition to monitoring pace, evaluators are also looking at participants’ attitudes. “We do that because it’s safety first,” Miralles said. If accepted, participants are on the hook to raise a minimum of $2,500. “We’re looking for committed people,” he said. “We have veterans on the street begging for their next meal. If you can’t ask your friends for $10 you’re not committed.”

Showing up for Veterans

A $3.5 Million Dream

Approaching its fifth anniversary, 191 people have applied to participate in the next 50 Mile March on August 24-25, 2024. A maximum of 100 will be accepted. Due to the physical and mental stamina needed to complete the 22-hour walk, applicants go through a substantial vetting process. Currently, the vetting process includes a 15-mile group walk with two training stops. At both training stops applicants have to complete two circuits consisting of planks, jumping jacks, and high knees in one-minute intervals.

While previous missions benefited organizations like Guitars For Vets and Moving Veterans Forward, this year’s funds will go towards an entirely new initiative. The initiative, aptly named Operation Homebase, is a $3.5 million campaign to create a one-of-a-kind community to support veterans as they transition to civilian life. “When you leave a system that thinks for you, feeds you, and clothes you in exchange for following their orders, you lose your purpose,” Miralles said. “When I left the military I had a hard time adjusting

and that’s where I lost my way.” He experienced homelessness and struggled with his mental health. “But I was too proud to ask for help,” he said. Operation Homebase will feature 22 tiny homes as well as a community center and a new warehouse for Moving Veterans Forward. Miralles said the community center will host events teaching residents life skills, like how to balance a checkbook, budget, or apply for a home loan. Residents will work for Moving Veterans Forward, eventually transitioning into jobs with partner organizations, such as Werner Enterprises. Werner Enterprises has been recognized consistently for its dedication to providing employment opportunities to veterans, most recently being recognized with a 2023 Military Friendly Company Designation and a 2023 VETS Indexes 4 Star Employer. Greg Hamm, vice president of field and government recruiting for Werner, noted that 20% of its workforce is veterans.

“Veterans bring a unique blend of discipline, leadership, and problem-solving skills to the workforce, making them an invaluable asset to any organization,” he said.

Supportive Community

Miralles said sometimes veterans aren’t able to see the skills Hamm mentioned as applicable to civilian life, leading them to believe they’re unemployable. “When I left the military I felt so socially inept,” he said. “I felt like people on the outside were so much smarter and more equipped. The voices in my head told me ‘You’re not good enough.’” Providing a pathway to employment is one way to redirect negative thoughts. Another is providing a community support system. The goal is to have Ron Hernandez, the Omaha veteran who founded Moving Veterans Forward, live full-time in the community to offer support. The Greater Omaha community can support Operation Homebase

in a variety of ways. Aside from applying to walk in the 50 Mile March or monetary donations, the event is also in need of volunteers. Executive Director Leon Haith said the organization is always in need of volunteers to help set up the final destination celebration at Nebraska Brewing Co. They are also in need of ground crew volunteers to help maintain the safety of the walkers. As the executive director and a parent of a walker, he said safety is the biggest concern. “[When] my daughter called me and said she was doing the 50 Mile March from Lincoln to Omaha I said “no you’re not,”” Haith said. “I was worried about the safety.” Haith’s daughter was steadfast in her desire to support veterans, like Haith. Haith served for 34 years in the United States Army retiring as a command sergeant major after deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. Haith said when he showed up at the rendezvous point in Lincoln his daughter handed him an operation order. “I read it and saw they had obviously put the time into it like any military mission,” he said. Haith followed his daughter’s progress and was there to hand her an old pair of stretched-out tennis shoes so she could finish the walk. “She was hurting, but she was ready to do it again. She would have done it last year, but she fractured her ankle. She rode with me as a volunteer,” Haith said. Their story is not unique in this crowd, where veterans, family members, and friends, have signed up to walk or volunteer. However, every story is unique. “I wish you could hear everybody’s story,” Haith said. MBJ had the opportunity to collect a small sampling of those stories, which you can read on the following pages. VETERANS

50 Mile March Q & A

COVER story

SUPPORTING VETERANS THROUGH COMMUNITY

Q. Why did you participate in the 50 JODI JEFFERSON

DALE MCGAVRAN

A. After retiring from the Air Force after serving for 21 years, I got into a mundane cycle and my own mental health was suffering. Once I found out about the 50 Mile March and its purpose, I engulfed myself in every aspect of it. My dear friend and former co-worker Amy took her own life four years ago so she was my “why.” From fundraising to walking to spreading the word about the march and its impact on veterans – I did it for her.

A. I am a retired Air Force veteran. I have provided hundreds of suicide intervention counselings so I have a deep concern for those suffering with life’s challenges. I want to do everything I can to stop the epidemic of veteran suicide.

ADAM CASSIDY

STEVE WILLIAMSON

A. Being part of the 50 Mile March didn’t just raise funds for the foundation; it galvanized my commitment to be a lifelong advocate for veteran issues. The impact is not fleeting; it’s an enduring reminder of the work that still needs to be done. The experience left an indelible mark on me, reinforcing my resolve to stand by this initiative until the vision of the 50 Mile March Foundation becomes a widespread reality. The march didn’t just end after 50 miles; it started a lifelong journey of advocacy and support for a cause that I deeply believe in.

A. Being a veteran myself, I know a little about the stresses former military face when they leave the service. Some are negatively impacted by the duties they had and are permanently scarred. Being able to do something to positively help them means a lot. It’s way more than a walk, it’s a journey for a great cause. The preparation physically and mentally is life-changing for me. I am proud to say I raised money for a great cause and I found, as Jay likes to say, my tribe. I’ve done many things in my life but this is certainly one of the most impactful. Let’s Gooooo!!

SHERRY LERIGER A. It is life-changing! I participate, because patriotism and saying thank you is important to me. I participate because those who are suffering need our help. I participate because the need for resources is beyond what we can do as individuals, but together we can accomplish it!

MIDLANDS BUSINESS JOURNAL

Mile March and how did it impact you? ED FRAZIER A. I participated for two reasons: 1. Empower veterans facing mental health challenges and homeless. 2. Challenge myself by rucking 72 pounds, which is symbolic of the 72 Nebraskans who sacrificed their lives in the War on Terror. I failed this year’s 50 Mile March due to dehydration (long story) but I am determined to “continue the mission” next year. Veterans who face mental health challenges and homelessness don’t get to take a break ... I won’t either.

THREE GENERATIONS OF 50 MILE MARCH-ERS (LEFT TO RIGHT): BECK FRAZIER (ED FRAZIER’S SON), CHIP FRAZIER (ED FRAZIER’S FATHER), AND ED FRAZIER

GREG HAMM

PHIL TABER

A. I found out about the 50 Mile March at an event at the VA from a past participant. I was intrigued by the opportunity to impact not only the homelessness crisis that impacts the veteran community but also to attack the veteran suicide problem. As a veteran, I found the challenge of walking 50 miles in 22 hours also appealing to me as a mental and physical challenge. There are many worthy charities to give to, and never enough money to impact them all, but with the 50-MM, and Operation Homefront, they are building a tangible physical structure that will impact Veterans as soon as it is completed.

A. I did the 50 Mile March to help support those who volunteered to serve our country when they need support. Doing the 50 Mile March did two things for me. First, after crossing the finish line, it made me realize what I am capable of after being pushed to a breaking point. And secondly, after crossing the finish line, it made me so proud to give back to those who serve.

JAIME SEEMAN

LINDSEY BETSWORTH

A. As a co-founder of the 50 Mile March, we walk for those who have served this great country that I get the opportunity to live in. As a physician, I see the incredible impact that mental health has on these vets and their families. We take so many of our conveniences for granted and most of us do not struggle for basic necessities or a place to call home. My passion and purpose are leaving ripples in this world that can outlast me. 50 Mile March gives us all an opportunity to create solutions for those who have given so much sacrifice to our country. Together we are better!

A. To help raise funds and give back to our veterans who gave so much to our country. The mental health aspect and raising awareness in the country about the number of veterans who take their lives every day and letting them know it’s okay to ask for help and there are resources out there for you. The fact that all the money raised goes to giving back to veterans is a small gesture of how thankful we all are.

50 Mile March Q & A SUPPORTING VETERANS THROUGH COMMUNITY

Q. Why did you participate in the 50 Mile March and how did it impact you? CONTINUED

JOSEPH WILSON A. When I took my first steps from the Lincoln capitol and embarked on the 50 Mile March I had one goal: to help veterans in any small way I could. Little did I know how transformative this event and organization would be to my life and to the veteran community. I’ve been fortunate enough to have veterans as family members, friends and colleagues and have witnessed a glimpse of the sacrifices they make to ensure our freedom. The march pushes people to their max. The pain is temporary, but our efforts can make a lifelong impact on the vets who need help. They served for us, we march for them!

ALICIA COSTANZO A. I have always been a patriotic person and supportive of our veterans. I know firsthand how a pack of resources can affect a veteran. When my father came home from Vietnam, not only was there a lack of resources but there was also no support. They were not welcomed home. It affected him in a most drastic way and, in turn, we all were affected. There is no reason someone like him should face depression and PTSD without help. We owe them at least that.

LOGAN WEST

CHAD ELLISON

MARTIN APPRICH

A. I learned about the 50 Mile March while employed as the veteran advocate for Benchmark Mortgage. As a veteran and having been impacted by suicide myself, I knew this was an organization I had to be a part of. When you put yourself through that grueling of a process, you really get a glimpse into what veterans suffering from mental health challenges and homelessness deal with on a daily basis. Raising a small amount of money and donating my time is the least I can do to support such an important demographic in my community.

A. I participated this year to honor the men and women who serve our country. It was an amazing experience with even more amazing people. Overwhelming sense of accomplishment and community. Can’t wait to do it again next year.

A. I’m a veteran marching for veterans. I am a disabled veteran myself, but am fortunate to not have or carry the scars of my combat experience. I march for those not so fortunate and many of those suffer from injuries seen and unseen, like PTSD and TBI – like me. This effort is for them and those who will follow in our footsteps in defense of our great nation. I am doubly honored to have led this march at the age of 59.

With the fourth quarter well underway, planning for 2024 means taking a look back at 2023.

Assessing Performance

First, business owners should consider their key performance indicators (KPI). Comparing industry benchmarks, as well as the company’s overall performance, can help management identify missteps or opportunities. In addition, comparing a company’s actual performance to its budget helps management identify where there may have been unexpected changes. “There may be some financial ratios that really highlight areas that management should focus on,” said Jerry O’Doherty, audit partner and Omaha office market leader for Eide Bailly. “For instance, certain liquidity ratios tell management about their

ability to meet short-term obligations.” Business owners should also take a look at their marketing KPIs and set goals for 2024. “Looking at metrics, how marketing efforts performed, increase in sales, decrease in client/customer turnover, and overall reactions to marketing efforts should all be taken into consideration at the end of the year,” said Angela Chaney, partner at Pixel Fire Marketing. James S. Bowen, president of Five Nines, which provides managed IT services, noted the importance of assessing the performance of equipment to ensure a business can continue to streamline its operations. “For our part, being in the technology space, even something as seemingly simple as an IT budget for next year takes a lot of effort to do right,” Bowen said. “Everything that touches technology

Those that are asking questions and learning more tend toBUSINESS JOURNAL MIDLANDS make the more informed decisions that help them navigate the ever-changing landscape in the business world we all live in. JERRY O’DOHERTY, OMAHA OFFICE MARKET LEADER FOR EIDE BAILLY has a different lifespan. Your laptop, the version of Windows it is running, the wireless it is interacting with, and the switches that wireless is connected to — they all last different lengths of time.”

Creating a Needs Assessment Plan

A business needs to start with a goal in mind, O’Doherty said. Once it has that guiding light, it helps identify what investment is needed to achieve that goal. “If [the] goal is revenue growth in a people-driven business, the needs assessment would include identifying the number of personnel to hire,” O’Doherty said. “Capital-intensive businesses would need to look at the amount of machinery and/or space needed to increase production.” He suggested creating a projection of the amount of capital needed to achieve the goal. Once that is identified, management will need to determine the funding sources, whether that be through additional borrowing from a bank and/or equity infusion from the owners. He did caution, however, that business owners should be aware of rising interest rates. If marketing goals have not been met, small businesses should consider either hiring a professional marketing firm or, if they

already work with one, changing their strategy or choosing a different firm for the next year, Chaney said. “Goals should be set out at the beginning of the year in terms of marketing and, if they have not been reached, small business owners will know they need to make alterations for the upcoming year,” she said. Bowen said a way to determine an accurate budget for next year is to look back three years or more as well as forecast forward three to five years based on past decisions. “As most small businesses don’t have full-time CFOs, this information and skill set is often hard to come by,” Bowen said. “I’m a big believer that innovation will happen as long as time is dedicated to it.” Bowen emphasized the need to set time aside to plan. “Many businesses choose to do these planning sessions offsite because something seemingly that simple can make it easier for the participants to have the right mindset going into the strategy meetings and set aside their day-to-day worries,” Bowen said. Five Nines starts its strategic planning process in the third quarter so that it can all be completed in time for finalized budgets in the fourth quarter, which takes into account the wants and needs of each department. The firm’s planning process starts with each department head presenting a SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) for their function. “Preparing the presentation requires the department heads to dedicate the time to think about the overall needs of their department and our business from a higher perspective, and that is the big win here,” Bowen said. “After all the presentations are heard by the full leadership team, then we are in a better position to prioritize the most obtainable wins and consider budgeting for longer-term goals.”

Bring in Professionals

O’Doherty said that ideally, the development of the plan is a repetitive process. Once the business develops its projection, management should continuously update and improve the budget as more information becomes available. “For instance, in California where they are raising the minimum wage for fast food workers to $20 per hour next year, those restaurants will need to quickly adjust pricing for when that becomes effective,” O’Doherty said. The various needs of the business will determine the right kinds of professionals to get involved.

“Typically we see the most successful businesses have a very good working relationship with their CPA for financial and tax planning needs, their attorney for legal needs, their insurance agent for risk management needs, and their investment adviser to assist with net worth growth if there is excess capital generated by the business,” O’Doherty said. End-of-year planning will ideally take place in October or November to give the business owner time to implement any needed changes before the new year. “In terms of marketing, a professional marketing firm can help a business owner look over their results from the previous year and help them create a needs assessment for 2024,” Chaney said. Marketing is just one aspect of performance, but it is a crucial one. Small businesses that have an effective and strategic marketing plan in place can save time, money, and resources attempting to get and retain new clients or customers. Finally, keeping in tune with industry trends will give business owners a leg up. “Those that are asking questions and learning more tend to make the more informed decisions that help them navigate the ever-changing landscape in the business world we all live in,” O’Doherty said.

JULIE HOCKNEY ESTABLISHES FAMILY OF BUSINESSES BY TIFFANY BRAZDA Becoming an entrepreneur was natural for Julie Hockney. In 2007, sitting at home with a newborn baby, she was inspired to start JH Interior Design Studio. It was the confidence to try out the interior design business, messy or not, that gave her the boost to dive in. “I was just excited to start something and I think for a lot of entrepreneurs, that’s where it begins,” she said. “I started in my basement. It wasn’t glamorous, it wasn’t big. It was really grassroots. And I just loved building something. I loved finding people to come alongside that vision.” Once established, Hockney often found herself creating bouquets of flowers for photo shoots in her kitchen late at night. It was then that she realized she could open a companion business. Bouquet, a full-service floral design studio, was opened in 2014. But, she didn’t stop there. The Studio by JH, a retail store featuring a showroom and art gallery was opened in 2021. Additionally, she opened a second interior design branch in Steamboat, Colorado. With the majority of her businesses located off of N. 98th Street within the Clocktower Village strip mall, Hockney rounded out her ventures in 2022 when she purchased The Winery, an established wine shop and deli that had previously shuttered its doors.

I was just excited to start something and I think for a lot of entrepreneurs, that’s where it begins. -JULIE HOCKNEY, FOUNDER, JH INTERIOR DESIGN STUDIO

“I naturally have a lot of energy. I love people. And I love figuring things out,” Hockney said of her serial entrepreneurism. “I think the combo of those three is always just a great formula for a new project. You can’t do it alone. So bringing people in and getting to know them and what motivates them and having them feel successful is a better feeling to me than anything.”

Hockey serves on the board of EO Nebraska and is currently president-elect, making her the first female president of the organization when she steps into the role in July 2024. She said her involvement in EO has provided a key support system along the way.

“It’s hard to explain how incredibly helpful it is to have other people in the same situation,” she said. “Having those people there even just to listen or share an experience of something they did is just so incredibly valuable and helpful. It’s almost this built-in safety net.” Address: 721 N. 98th St. Omaha, NE 68144 Phone: (402) 934-3474 Website: www.jhdesignomaha.com Social Media: Facebook, Instagram, Houzz

EO NEBRASKA: MARTHA MCSALLY EO Nebraska is excited to welcome Martha McSally, America’s first female fighter pilot, to speak about how to overcome fear, build exceptional teams and be agile and resilient in a turbulent world. As the first woman in U.S. History to fly a fighter jet in combat and command a fighter squadron in combat, Colonel (ret) McSally has proven she has the right stuff to survive and excel in high-pressure, high-risk, dynamic environments.

In this awe-inspiring program, Colonel McSally equips leaders with step-by-step guidance to choose courage, create a “wingman” mentality, and have a mindset of agility to overcome adversities and succeed in an uncertain world. Are you an entrepreneur with a thirst for knowledge, who wants to grow your business and value events like this? GREATER OMAHA CHAMBER

Pathway to Prosperity RECOVERY GRANTS BRING OPPORTUNITIES TO OMAHA NEIGHBORHOODS Businesses and organizations hardest hit by the COVID-19 public health emergency are taking advantage of a new Nebraska grant program signed into law in June of 2023. The North and South Omaha Recovery Grant Program (NSORG) will provide a substantial $225 million in grant funding to organizations in critically affected areas. The grant is broken down into eight funding categories addressing a variety of critical needs, from small business support and workforce development to arts and culture improvements. Federal funding came from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), which was designated for these specific communities by the Nebraska Legislature. Grant applications opened in September for businesses and organizations in affected areas. Deadline and application requirements vary by category and can be found on the Nebraska Department of Economic Development’s website, along with helpful guides and workshop recordings. The NSORG Program is just one example of good public policy spurring economic development in the region. LB 531, passed in the Legislature during the 2023 session and signed into law by Gov. Jim Pillen over the summer, directed the application and distribution process of NSORG and builds upon last year’s economic and community development efforts, initially introduced as LB 1024 in 2022. The Greater Omaha Chamber supported both bills in the Legislature and remains committed to partnering with other community entities to ensure that process rolls out smoothly. “The Legislature has recognized that areas of our city have historically been underinvested or disinvested in,” said Jennifer Creager, Senior Vice President for Public Policy at the Greater Omaha Chamber. As the Greater Omaha Chamber outlines its priorities for 2024, economic development is at the top of the list. Programs like NSORG create a path for growth and expansion in key Greater Omaha neighborhoods, bringing greater prosperity to the region as a whole. “This is a generational and transformational opportunity and one we all have a responsibility to make sure succeeds. We believe that prosperity for Omaha truly means prosperity for all

Omahans,” said Creager. As the city and state transition out of the pandemic emergency and the related economic uncertainty left in its wake, the Chamber will continue to participate in conversations with city and neighborhood officials, elected officials and local businesses to ensure that the distribution of funds remains consistent with the needs identified by the application process. We also plan to establish North and South Omaha Economic Development Working Groups in coordination with our partner organizations to ensure we are providing adequate resources to support the community’s needs. Working together with regional partners, the Greater Omaha Chamber prides itself on connecting key resources with the people and organizations who need them most. The following are some guidelines to consider when posting legal notices with the Midlands Business Journal: 1. Submit a written notice in either Microsoft Word or as a PDF document either through mbj.com or through the Legal Department at legals@ mbj.com. For trade names, submit a copy of approved (bar code in upper right hand corner) Application For Registration of Trade Name from the Secretary of State to the same email address. Please include your billing address and the desired duration you’d like your notice to run (trade names run for only one week). As a publisher and not a legal advisor we print notices exactly as they are submitted and therefor only comp reruns when the notice was rejected or messed up due to a MBJ error. All companies submitting notices are responsible for ensuring the content fits with the State’s requirements and are responsible for the cost of republishing the notice if it is rejected due to misinformation or missing information 2. You will receive a confirmation and price quote. Legal notices, except for trade names, are charged per line. The flat fee for a trade name is $50. Payment is now credit or debit card. 3. Deadline is 5 p.m. on Monday for a notice to start publishing that Friday. 4. All costs include fees to file the notice with the Secretary of State and/or any appropriate courts. 5.
