COVER story THE PLANIT INC. TEAM OF ALL WOMEN.

Event Planners Adapt and Thrive PLANIT INC. CELEBRATES 25 YEARS With a single client, Renee Black and Lesley Brandt launched the meeting and event planning company now known as planit inc. on November 3, 1998. A quarter-century later, it’s a multi-milliondollar, international company with an all-woman team managing the production of complex events, conventions, conferences and meetings for clients of all sizes. “One of the things that Lesley and I are most proud of is that when we started this 25 years ago, our identity and who we are and what we wanted to do has not changed; we’ve not wavered in that we have always wanted to be in that meeting and event and conference space,” said Renee Black, principal & senior event producer. “Now, what has changed is our venues and growth … our skill set became stronger.” Technology enhances events more than ever, and the company has incorporated digital expertise into the team. In the early years, the events were usually local, with larger gatherings at the Civic Auditorium downtown or the Holiday Inn Convention Center, Black said. Both venues are now gone, but they served as an effective training ground.

“From there, when we started gaining a book of business, we started planning events all over the country,” Black said. “We were doing things in Orlando and Chicago and Los Angeles and bringing that to our backyard to be able to execute those kinds of events at the nowCHI Health Center.” From the very beginning, cultivating positive relationships with clients has been a top objective, Brandt said. “Nobody loves on our clients like us.” Black reiterated that the company knows its purpose. “It’s great to put your team in front,” she said. “But if you don’t have the clients, and you don’t have the infrastructure in place, you don’t have anything …We are a client-centric firm.” That client-first mentality paid off as the company grew its capacity and services, which required changes in pricing. “We’ve had clients that have gone another direction because of cost and have come back to us,” Black said. Pricing remains competitive and that helps planit inc. stand out even in new markets, she said.

FROM LEFT, LESLEY BRANDT AND RENEE BLACK, FOUNDERS OF PLANIT INC.

We’re women-owned, we’re women-led, we’re women-run. - RENEE BLACK, PRINCIPAL & SENIOR EVENT PRODUCER, PLANIT, INC. “I think we have a Midwest pricing model that has helped us,” she said. “If you put us up against a firm in New York City or LA, I’m guessing our Midwestern hard work and pricing model is still going to rise to the top; you know that we’ve got a fair pricing model.” With so many moving parts, no event can be predictable down to the last detail. The planit inc. team is unfazed by the unexpected and is skilled at in-the-moment problem-solving, Black said. The company has also successfully met multiple challenges on a larger scale such as hits to the events sector including 9/11, the economic downturn of 2001-2008 and, most recently, the social distancing measures and travel restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic. Some innovations borne of necessity, like hybrid virtual/in-person events in 2020 and 2021, have actually been incorporated into planit inc.’s repertoire. “Our book of business is very diverse; we’ve got so many different kinds of business that it’s just crazy to think about,” Black said. “It’s definitely not a one-shot, one-size-fits-all, yet our processes fit everyone. And that’s pretty cool, right? No matter what’s brought to us, we have an answer to it.” Planning events is not an easy business, Black said, and requires a dedicated team for the late nights, early mornings, and meticulous level of detail it demands. “There are people who do not want to travel, do not want to work outside of an 8-to-5 or a 9-to-5 type of environment,” she said. “For whatever reason, we’re having a hard time finding people that want to

truly be immersed in the event-professional life. I think it will change. I think as the job market tightens … as we have COVID in our rearview mirrors, I think that will change for the better. But right now, finding qualified talent is a challenge.” It’s a challenge that the team is already overcoming. “We just have to find the different ways to search for people who want to be an event professional,” Black said. The women of planit inc. can attest to the numerous rewards of the work; they learn to be versatile and resourceful whether they’re determining space allocation, booking entertainment, creating a marketing plan, coordinating transportation, or smoothly finding a great solution to a last-minute snag. The company has women on staff who have been with planit inc. for years, but it also provides incredible opportunities for rising young professionals to learn valuable skills such as time management, working with budgets and developing contingency plans. Being the first on-site and the last to

leave is satisfying as much as it is exacting. “We’re women-owned, we’re women-led, we’re women-run. That is what we wanted to be 25 years ago; it’s what we are today. We’re very, very proud of empowering, and teaching women to lead and make a change in our communities,” Black said. “I think the women who have worked for us, whether they’re still with us or moved on to other career options, know that we were very dedicated to them and dedicated to their growth.” Plus, she added, gatherings are enjoyable by nature. “We love to have fun,” she said. “I think that people assume that the owners are not immersed into the business, or that the owners aren’t fun, that they must be very serious because they’re running a business. Lesley and I are immersed or have a hand in every client that planit does business with … we like to celebrate, we love to laugh, we love to celebrate our successes.”

Since 2014, the Women’s Entrepreneurship Day Organization (WEDO) has recognized female entrepreneurs and their community contributions each November 19. Over the organization’s nine-year existence, Women’s Entrepreneurship Day has grown to be celebrated as a movement across more than 144 countries.

‘I Wish I Had Known’

Close to home, female entrepreneurs in the Midlands are sharing their insights, challenges and obstacles alike to lift and empower others in the community in advance of the upcoming celebration. “One of the things that I wish I had known before entering the industry is the importance of systems and automation,” said Leressa M. Joiner, founder and racial equity consultant at the coaching and consulting firm that shares her name. “In the coaching and consulting industry, client relationships are at the core. So, automating administrative tasks can be a game changer.” Embracing these administrative tools, Joiner noted, allows one to focus on what matters: serving clients, developing expertise and business growth. “It’s an investment that pays off in terms of time, energy and the

potential for long-term success in this field,” she said. Additionally, Joiner wishes she had known the profound impact that having a supportive community in her personal and professional life could have. “Building a network of like-minded individuals who share your vision and values is invaluable,” she explained. “It’s not just about what you know; it’s about who you know and the relationships you nurture along the way.” Speaker and author Nicole Bianchi wished she had known about the power of resiliency. “It’s easy to underestimate the obstacles and setbacks you may encounter, but having the bravery and determination to persist, adapt and bounce back from failures is an invaluable trait for any entrepreneur,” she said. This trait was the inspiration for her first book, “Small Brave Moves.” “Bravery is an acquired behavior and it takes practice,” she said. “For me, I put in the practice. It was being bullied by a bad boss that inspired me to get it together as a young student, and to then graduate and change the face of leadership, which is my life’s inspiration and my life’s work.” Photographer and Creative Director Ariel Panowicz of Ariel Panowicz Creative said valuable insight she wish she had when starting in the

Resilience in the face of inevitable failures and roadblocks again topped the list of attributes that have contributed to Bianchi’s success in entrepreneurship and industrywide – allowing one to “persevere and learn from these experiences.” Bianchi also said being courageous, pursuing mentors, and being willing to network have helped her succeed. “Courage is essential for pushing boundaries and driving innovation,” she said. “It’s essential to seek guidance and support from those who have walked a similar path, as their insights can be instrumental in your growth.” When asked about barriers she has overcome, Bianchi referenced pushing past the notion of “making it” as the first college graduate and

scholarship recipient in her family. “A few tough situations kicked me into gear and I became the hardest, most focused worker you’ve ever seen,” she said. “Studying full-time and working two jobs is an insane lifestyle. So, when I was headhunted, I actually told them — as a student mind you – ‘I have only an hour for you at 6 a.m.” They met her at 6 a.m. and she got the job. “I learned right out of the gate that being clear, focused and on time, and clear about where you want to go and what you want to do is a huge asset,” she said. “Self-doubt” has been Panowicz’s biggest barrier. “Especially as women, we tend to feel like we aren’t doing enough,” she said. “We get trapped in the comparison game and we greatly overthink, well, just about everything. Learning to walk through the fears of starting and owning your own business can be really challenging at times.” Her antidote to the doubts? “Reminding myself every day that I am capable,” she said. “For a long time, I was made to feel like I had to act a certain way in certain rooms to be taken seriously as a businesswoman,” she recalled. “The sooner I realized I can carve my own path and make what feels true to me happen, the sooner the world felt more open to me and the sooner I was able to find my community. No one will believe in you if you don’t believe in yourself.”

SMALL business DAVID STEVENS, FOUNDER & PRINCIPAL OF STEVENS CAPITAL PARTNERS.

Unparalleled Opportunity STEVENS CAPITAL PARTNERS GROWS EXPONENTIALLY In 2020, David Stevens opened Stevens Capital Partners (SCP) in Omaha with 100 clients and approximately $100 million in assets under management. Nearly three years later, SCP has grown exponentially and now serves 300 clients, representing over $220 million in assets under management.

Building A Career

Stevens started his career at TD Ameritrade in the late 1990s and spent over 20 years cultivating his career in the financial services industry. “Cutting ties with TD Ameritrade to open my own independent advisory firm wasn’t easy, but it was a necessity to be able to better serve my clients and have greater flexibility and autonomy,” Stevens said. Before opening his firm, Stevens held several positions at TD Ameritrade, where he worked in three major divisions of the brokerage firm, including operations, retail distribution and institutional. Given this unparalleled opportunity, he learned all

aspects of the business. “The breadth and depth of the knowledge I acquired at TD Ameritrade has been instrumental to SCP’s growth,” Stevens said. His career was launched at TD Ameritrade when — as a 19-year-old college student, wearing his father’s suit because he didn’t have one of his own — he applied for a summer job in the mailroom. Somehow, he got the wrong application, and after taking a series of analytical tests and scoring high, he was offered a job— but not in the mailroom. “I was a 19-year-old kid from Bellevue, home for the summer from college, working with retired military personnel and MBAs,” Stevens said. “It was a great experience. I loved every minute of it.” After graduating from University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Stevens returned to TD Ameritrade, and 20 years later he was the firm’s No. 1 financial adviser in the nation. At the time the ranking was based on total guidance of assets being

professionally managed by advice solutions introduced by Stevens and provided by TD Ameritrade, including third-party and internal solutions. His TD Ameritrade experience was the impetus for starting SCP. He wanted to offer clients a fee-only, independent, registered investment advisor (RIA) who could advise on a breadth of topics without constraints or limitations. “I’m focused on making a positive difference in the lives of the individuals and families I work with for years to come,” Stevens said.

Future Growth

Stevens foresees expanding the business in terms of the services offered and the number of employees. His goal is for SCP to take on additional clients and be a one-stop solution for clients’ needs. “Advisers are drawn to independence because they want greater autonomy and the ability to build equity in their own business,” Stevens said. “While these benefits factored into my decision to launch SCP, the primary reason was to be 100% fiduciary and 100% fee-only.” Stevens credits his firm’s success to his discipline and commitment to staying at the forefront of investing and advising. He is an avid reader and invests one to two hours every morning studying the markets, and he reads three to four books each month, a lifelong passion instilled into him by his parents. Self-study and continuing education are critical to help him keep up with what is happening in this ever-evolving industry. Stevens is a member of several professional organizations,

including the National Association of Personal Finance Advisors (NAPFA), an organization for fee-only advisers. He also believes in mentorship and paying it forward, having benefited firsthand from individuals who provided invaluable guidance to him over the years. “I have a couple of great mentors who have built large financial planning practices and continue to act as a sounding board for all of my endeavors,” he said. When hiring people, Stevens seeks individuals that embody what he calls the three C’s — credentials, confidence, and caring. “It’s difficult, especially in my industry, to find people with all three,” he said. “Finding the right people, people who have the three C’s, is the biggest challenge, but also the greatest reward when we find somebody who meets those criteria and joins our team.” Stevens has long tried to stay ahead of industry trends and believes in offering, when possible, holistic financial planning to his clients under one roof. For his part, Stevens is looking forward to the continued growth of his RIA and building a lasting organization that will take care of clients for the rest of their lives. “I view this as a 30-year partnership, and I sincerely mean that,” Stevens said. “At SCP, we guide each individual or family, creating a comprehensive financial plan based on their personal goals. To further SCP’s impact, our firm maintains a 10% pledge, where 10% of net profits go to charitable causes such as health care for low-income families and fighting human trafficking.” Stevens graduated from UNL and holds Series 7 and Series 66 securities licenses. He is also a Certified Financial Planner and a member of the Financial Planning Association of Nebraska.

Omaha Businesses Value a Philanthropic Culture Giving Tuesday, led locally by SHARE Omaha, is November 28th. This global day of giving is critical to local nonprofits whose ability to help those in need has been greatly challenged in the past few years by the pandemic, inflation and a rise in the numbers of individuals and families they serve.

Medical Solutions is also a lead sponsor of #GivingTuesday402. “Our partnership with SHARE Omaha is an investment in the betterment and vitality of the Omaha community we call home,” said Craig Meier, CEO of Medical Solutions.

Desmond Tutu said, “Do little bits of good where you are. It’s those bits of good put together that will overwhelm the world.” SHARE Omaha is encouraging those “bits of good” from businesses and corporations across the Omaha metro for Giving Tuesday with a goal of raising 5 million dollars for local nonprofit organizations. In a recent survey of area nonprofits, a majority of those responding said their fundraising is flat or down, and 38% said their fundraising is down more than 25-50%.

Lead sponsors CQuence Health and Medical Solutions are joined by supporting sponsors Farm Credit Services of America and Kiewit in boosting Giving Tuesday efforts.

Businesses across the metro can change this dynamic in a day.

Choose a way your business can help on Giving Tuesday.

Examples of how businesses can help on Giving Tuesday include choosing one of the holiday collection drives posted on the SHARE Omaha website, donating a portion of sales on Giving Tuesday, offering pro bono time and expertise to a local nonprofit, providing a matching gift for every employee who contributes to a nonprofit and donating material items from your business (i.e. art supplies, diapers, toys, sports equipment).

The SHARE Omaha website has over 675 nonprofit profiles across hundreds of areas of need from food insecurity to health and wellness, arts, youth, education, homelessness and many more. These nonprofits need new donors, and businesses can encourage philanthropy. Collectively, every gift large or small makes a difference. The following are some guidelines to consider when posting legal notices with the Midlands Business Journal: 1. Submit a written notice in either Microsoft Word or as a PDF document either through mbj.com or through the Legal Department at legals@ mbj.com. For trade names, submit a copy of approved (bar code in upper right hand corner) Application For Registration of Trade Name from the Secretary of State to the same email address. Please include your billing address and the desired duration you’d like your notice to run (trade names run for only one week). As a publisher and not a legal advisor we print notices exactly as they are submitted and therefor only comp reruns when the notice was rejected or messed up due to a MBJ error. All companies submitting notices are responsible for ensuring the content fits with the State’s requirements and are responsible for the cost of republishing the notice if it is rejected due to misinformation or missing information 2. You will receive a confirmation and price quote. Legal notices, except for trade names, are charged per line. The flat fee for a trade name is $50. Payment is now credit or debit card. 3. Deadline is 5 p.m. on Monday for a notice to start publishing that Friday. 4. All costs include fees to file the notice with the Secretary of State and/or any appropriate courts. 5. Invoices must be paid prior to publication.
