United Way of the Midlands
CELEBRATING A CENTURY OF HELPING PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY In 1923, community leaders and residents in Douglas County created an organization called The Community Chest to support local health and human services efforts, distributing funds to 30 participating nonprofit organizations. In 2023, the fundamental purpose of helping local citizens overcome obstacles to creating a better future is much the same, but the name has been United Way of the Midlands (UWM) since 1975, the organization now serves the entire greater metro area, and the funding distribution model has evolved. “One of the things that we’re most proud of is that we really bring people together — whether it’s businesses, not-for-profit foundations, government, or individuals — to work together to ensure that our health and human services programs have the resources they need to address some of our biggest challenges in the community,” said President and CEO Shawna Forsberg. “One of the things I think people might not understand about United Way is that we fund a ton of very important programs, but we also do direct services. So, it really is looking at the entire community, identifying where needs are and leaning into that, whether it’s finding a program that addresses a need or delivering that service.” In the early years, as The Community Chest and, later, United
Community Services, the organization raised thousands of dollars annually for its member agencies. Most recently, UWM raised $40 million in a campaign year to support programs and direct services addressing social and economic disparities and essential needs from nutrition and housing to physical and mental health services and employment preparedness. Thousands of individual donors, many through workplace giving campaigns organized for more than 600 employers, along with corporate and foundation donors support more than 150 programs of over a hundred nonprofit agencies. “You’re going to know best in your community the nuances of what that community needs,” Forsberg said. “United Way only works if there’s a lot of people coming together — donors, people on the front lines delivering the services, the volunteer hours. I think that’s the beauty of it: it’s a community-led organization.” UWM is part of a larger organization, United Way Worldwide. “We’re part of the largest nonprofit in the country, but we’re independent 501(c)(3)s. I think it’s like the secret sauce for United Way because you take advantage of everything that a large organization has: best practices, connection, professional development, branding,” Forsberg said. “But the

work is done at the community level. All of us have our own 501(c)(3) designation. We have our own governing board. Really, the decisions are made at the local level with top leaders from that community.” In 2012, a committee of local leaders explored the area’s needs and UWM’s role in the community. A strategic plan emerged to expand fundraising and launch an open grant process, which made more organizations eligible to apply for funding. The Community Care Fund allocates dollars toward a variety of programs in what the organization calls a Circle of Support, and awards are determined by a review committee of subject-matter experts and other volunteers. “We’re able to not only support those amazing 32 (member agencies) that were partners with us forever but also invest in programs that are doing new and innovative things that maybe weren’t in that long tenure with United Way. I think that was a really smart change,” Forsberg said. “We’ve really diversified how we fund and we also have really expanded some direct service programs. It’s allowed us to be community-impact driven. We identify where challenges are at and figure out the best way to fund and address those challenges.” For instance, UWM’s 211 Helpline, a free service that provides multiple channels for individuals to seek assistance, now serves both the entire state of Nebraska and the entire state of Iowa. “I don’t know that those things would have occurred if we wouldn’t have really changed directions back in 2012,” Forsberg said. In 2019, JAG Nebraska was established in collaboration with Governor Pete Ricketts and the Nebraska Department of Labor to help students
develop skill sets to overcome challenges in the classroom that later translate to personal and career success. In 2020, UWM began partnering with the Omaha World-Herald to administer the longtime Goodfellows fundraising program. In 2022, together with Mayor Jean Stothert and the city of Omaha, UWM was selected to distribute $5 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to agencies in the metro area. “We’re very, very proud of our heritage. But I think where United Ways do the best work is that they’re very entrepreneurial and adaptive to what that community needs,” Forsberg said. “When we had flooding in 2019, we raised extra money, we were very intentional about funding programs that help families get back on their feet. When the pandemic happened, we actually reevaluated the investments that we had, and we worked with agencies to switch dollars to things that were really needed during the pandemic. You don’t want to be complacent. You really want to, as an organization, be listening and learning and have that continuous-learning mindset so that we can make the most of the previous treasure that people invest in the community through us. UWM had a lot to celebrate in its 100th anniversary year, and corporate sponsors stepped up to allow the organization to host several community events. “We wanted to showcase the amazing programs that we have the joy of funding. The work they do on the front lines to help stabilize families every day is just simply amazing. We wanted to be able to celebrate that because sometimes you only hear the negative,” Forsberg said. “There’s a lot of good going on. And you want people to have hope.”

United Way of the Midlands CELEBRATING A CENTURY OF HELPING OTHERS
1923 – Local citizens and community leaders banded together to create United Way of the Midlands’ prototype, The Community Chest. United Way was, and still is, dedicated to the community’s needs, by investing dollars in local health and human services programs that make the most impact. In its first year, funds were allocated among 32 participating nonprofit agencies.
2002-10 – UWM’s 211 Helpline expanded from four counties in 2002 to covering the entire state by 2010. In 2003, the 211 Call Center was accredited for the first time by the Alliance of Information & Referral Systems, and in 2010 the State of Nebraska funded 211 to take “Safe Haven” calls. 2012 – A committee of local leaders explored the area’s needs and UWM’s role in the community. This led to a transformational strategic plan that called for expanded fundraising and the establishment of an open grant process – allowing more nonprofits to apply for funding and partner with UWM to meet defined goals and community needs. Since this reset, UWM’s strategy continues to evolve through community-led strategic plans every three years.
1920s – From the beginning, a strong network of human services was essential to address interconnected needs in the community. For decades, UWM called the members of this network “red feather agencies.” The red feather was part of fundraising and campaign efforts, and organizations receiving UWM funding proudly displayed a red feather as a symbol of this partnership. 1933-34 – With the introduction of federal relief programs, The Community Chest temporarily shifted its focus to those unable to receive government aid. The organization’s 1934 annual campaign lasted 10 days with a goal to raise $554,800. 1940s – Women of the metro have always played an important role with UWM, raising funds and identifying issues.
2019 – During the catastrophic flooding, UWM worked to help with aid and recovery efforts – raising over $1 million and making statewide pay-outs, setting up a temporary call center for FEMA, taking disaster reports for NEMA and more.
1950 – Omaha was one of the few communities to pioneer a national model for a single organization dedicated to all facets of nonprofit fundraising and program investment…and the organization became United Community Services. 1966 – “Volunteerism” was added to the organization’s mission, increasing opportunities for the community to participate in supporting the cause. 1972 – The “Citizen of the Year” award was established to recognize individuals for their commitment and dedication to the community. 1975 – The organization officially became United Way of the Midlands. 1987 – UWM combined forces with United Way of Council Bluffs to expand fundraising efforts in the greater metro area, and also created a partnership with the Combined Health Agencies Drive (CHAD).
1998 – The Court-Referred Community Service Program (CRCSP) was created. This program, with support from Douglas County, refers criminal offenders to agencies for completion of judge-ordered community service.
2019 – JAG Nebraska is established in collaboration with Governor Pete Ricketts and the State of Nebraska. An evidenced-based, for-credit classroom elective, JAG helps students develop skillsets to overcome barriers to graduation – while setting them up for success in the classroom, workplace and life. Also in 2019, Senator Mike McDonnell made funding for the 211 Helpline his priority bill in the Nebraska Legislature and created a public-private partnership.
1941 – Built upon a mutual desire to create a better, stronger and more vibrant community – a partnership was established with the Omaha Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO to work together and strengthen the metro area for generations to come.
1987 – The Tocqueville Society was established. The charter group included 12 members whose vision and belief in the community spurred others to join and give.
2015 – The Corporate Partners of the Year awards are established to recognize organizations that go above and beyond to support UWM and our community.
2020 – UWM partnered with the Omaha World-Herald to administer the Goodfellows program. Also in 2020, we expanded our partnership with MUD and OPPD through the 211 Helpline for utilities assistance and secured CARES funding for housing stability needs. 2021 – UWM partnered with the Metro Area Continuum of Care for the Homeless (MACCH) in the distribution of the City of Omaha’s $22 million grant from the U.S. Department of Treasury Emergency Rental Assistance fund. These funds helped Omaha citizens who needed rental and utility assistance due to the pandemic. 2022 – Through a partnership with Mayor Jean Stothert and the City of Omaha, UWM was selected to distribute $5 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to agencies in the metro area. Today, UWM continues to serve the Omaha-Council Bluffs metro by bridging the business and not-for-profit sectors to create a Circle of Support that helps our neighbors overcome difficult challenges and start building a better future. For fiscal year 2021-22, UWM raised $36 million to support programs and direct services that address social and economic disparities and meet families’ essential needs such as healthy food, safe and stable housing, physical and mental health services, career preparation and job training.

While giving is often characterized as a thread within the fabric of our communities, Giving Tuesday this Nov. 28 is a reminder to give generously, especially as nonprofits are facing unprecedented challenges. The need within our community has only grown, and now is the time to step up.
Generous Teamwork
For Centris Federal Credit Union, there has been an increase in employee volunteerism this year – to the tune of 1,000-plus hours across 35 company-sponsored activities – as well as requests for volunteers from the many nonprofits that the credit union partners with, according to Dawn Gonzales, vice president

of community relations. “The change that stands out the most is the increase in requests for in-person financial education for teens and adults,” Gonzales said. “This is a focus for Centris, and we welcome the opportunity to teach people about money management and tools that will help them keep more of their money.” When addressing notable changes, Gonzales also underscored that the need for volunteers is “greater than ever.” “The workforce has changed and studies show that employee engagement increases when employees can volunteer for a few hours during the workday,” she added. “We have seen this at Centris and will continue to encourage our employees to volunteer for nonprofits that they can be passionate about.”

Greater Need
As Stephanie Sullivan, assistant director of marketing and communications put it, the Food Bank For The Heartland’s mission can only thrive through the ongoing support and the generosity of the community. “Monetary donations were up more than 20% in [fiscal year 2023], with individuals/households accounting for more than 40% of all monetary donations made to the Food Bank,” Sullivan said. “We also saw the average gift size from organizations increase by more than $1,000 in [fiscal year 2023].” Volunteer hours donated during the same time reportedly rose by 20% to 39,900 hours. “This is a direct testament to the giving spirit of the Heartland — and their compassion to help neighbors in need — during unprecedented times,” Sullivan stated. Citing a recent USDA report, she noted that food insecurity in Nebraska stands at 12.1%, exceeding the national average of 11.2%. “While we’re thrilled to report higher numbers of giving in the fiscal year 2023, we saw a significant decrease in donations in the fiscal year 2022 coming out of the pandemic,” Sullivan explained. “As our country, and the Heartland, have become acclimated to a new normal, people have returned to their pre-pandemic philanthropic priorities, not realizing the insurmountable need we’re still facing.” In fact, Sullivan said that the Food Bank is serving four times the number of households now versus in 2018. “The lingering effects of the pandemic coupled with inflation have devastated Heartland neighbors — resulting in more people than ever turning to the Food Bank and our partners for food assistance,” she said. Donna Kush, president and CEO of the Omaha Community Foundation, noted the impact of the shift back from pandemic-era funding. “Nonprofits continue to address issues exacerbated by the pandemic, like shortages in mental health care and food insecurity,” Kush said. “Nonprofits received relief funding through PPP loans, CARES Act, and ARPA, but those one-time infusions are gone and nonprofits are faced with inflation and struggling with their own increased costs, high staff turnover and budget deficits.” Additionally, she said there is increased competition for limited funding with new projects and programs. “In a recent SHARE Omaha survey, the majority of nonprofit respondents report that their fundraising is down in 2023,” said Teresa Mardesen, executive director of SHARE Omaha. The Silver Lining? “Over 80% said they need fewer than 200 new $100 donors to meet the needs of their nonprofit mission before the end of the year,” Mardesen said. “If you’ve felt the pull to help a cause you care about, now is the time to raise your hand and offer your support.”

Sullivan encouraged getting involved with the Food Bank’s Shine the Light on Hunger campaign, spearheaded by the Conagra Brands Foundation, which is going on now through the end of the year. “To encourage the public’s participation in the campaign, every gift made before December 31 will be matched up to $245,000,” CONTINUED

for our fundholders and help them amplify their impact,” she said. Donating to OCF’s Let Good Grow fund aids efforts like helping former residents of Legacy Crossing apartments – a complex shut down by the city last year due to code violations. Mardesen reinforced how Giving Tuesday is the biggest local giving day of the year. “What if every Omaha area family set aside a tenth of what they would spend on holiday gifts and gave that amount to nonprofits they care about on Giving Tuesday in honor of their loved ones?” she said. “According to recent spending statistics Americans spend an average of $997 on holiday gifts so that could mean vital nonprofits would benefit by almost $100 from each person.” At the time of this writing, early giving was open. “Donors can enter donation code, GIVINGTUESDAY, at checkout at SHAREomaha.org to indicate their early participation,” Mardesen said.

Charitable Giving Stragies END-OF-YEAR ADVICE FOR CLIENTS
BY THE OMAHA COMMUNITY FOUNDATION Clients coming to you at the end of the year want to ensure they are in the best possible financial situation heading into tax season. This proactive approach not only ensures legal compliance but optimizes tax benefits. By reviewing their finances and planning ahead, you can identify potential deductions, credits, and strategies – including a number of charitable giving options – to minimize your clients’ tax liability. Below are some charitable giving options to discuss with your clients.
Charitable Bunching
Since the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) of 2017 significantly increased the standard deduction, charitable bunching has become a popular, tax-savvy strategy for many people. By bunching several years’ worth of charitable contributions into a single tax year, your clients may surpass the standard deduction threshold, potentially maximizing their tax benefit. Charitable bunching can be particularly beneficial if your client plans to donate highly appreciated assets, such as stock. Your client can take advantage of the charitable deduction while also potentially avoiding capital gains taxes on the appreciated assets. Donor Advised Funds, like those offered at the Omaha Community Foundation, are great tools for charitable bunching. Your clients can donate the bunched amount into the fund, then distribute the funds over several years. Because the funds in Donor Advised Funds are invested, the amount has the potential to grow, as well, potentially creating more money that can be directed to support the nonprofits your clients choose.
Federal Estate Tax
Upcoming changes to the federal estate tax exemption may affect your high-net-worth
clients. In 2023, the per-person federal estate tax exemption is $12.92 million. Without Congressional action, that number will drop to $7 million at the end 2025. Donating assets such as real estate, business interests, stock, retirement accounts, or annuities can reduce the value of the estate. Assets donated to a Donor Advised Fund or other type of fund at the Omaha Community Foundation can be used to support your client’s church, alma mater, or other causes closest to their heart.
New Clients
First-time clients coming to you at the end of the year might need tax solutions quickly. A Donor Advised Fund or Charitable Checkbook fund at the Omaha Community Foundation are great solutions. By donating to a fund at OCF, your clients can receive the tax deductions for 2023, then take time to determine which causes or nonprofit organizations they want to support in the coming years. Please contact our Donor Services team at 402-3423458 or giving@omahafoundation.org to learn more about charitable giving options and strategies. Disclaimer: This article provides an overview of the possible tax advantages of various types of charitable donations and is not intended to provide tax or legal guidance. The Omaha Community Foundation recommends discussing these strategies with an accountant, financial advisor or attorney.
Your Partner in Philanthropy Your clients rely on your guidance to make important financial decisions. When it comes to charitable giving, we can partner with you to simplify their giving and amplify their impact.

The firm has worked to enhance its capabilities and expertise through a series of strategic moves. In 2022, two longstanding Omaha law firms, Gross & Welch (founded in 1927) and Marks Clare & Richards (founded in 1933) merged to establish Gross Welch Marks Clare. Submit a written notice in either Microsoft Word or as a PDF document either through mbj.com or through the Legal Department at legals@ mbj.com. For trade names, submit a copy of approved (bar code in upper right hand corner) Application For Registration of Trade Name from the Secretary of State to the same email address. Please include your billing address and the desired duration you’d like your notice to run (trade names run for only one week). All companies submitting notices are responsible for ensuring the content fits with the State’s requirements and are responsible for the cost of republishing the notice if it is rejected due to misinformation or missing information 2. You will receive a confirmation and price quote. Legal notices, except for trade names, are charged per line. The flat fee for a trade name is $50. Payment is now credit or debit card. 3.
