NEBRASKA ORGANIZATIONS ADOPT NEW TECH IN INVENTIVE WAYS BY BROOKE STRICKLAND

MICHAEL SAUERS

FOUNDER AND CEO, SHINEFORTH

TECHNOLOGY MANAGER, DO SPACE

Technology continues to evolve rapidly, enabling businesses of all sizes to streamline operations and better serve customers. But with that ever-changing technology landscape — especially in artificial intelligence (AI) — businesses must set aside time to learn how to best implement the methods that will work best to reach goals.

AI Trends

AI has already changed business practices with content that mimics human-generated work. Whether it’s writing, creating music, drafting a report, or even providing patient care in a clinic

setting, AI will continue to change the business landscape. “AI is revolutionizing how we approach data analysis, customer service, and automation,” said Jon Weiss, founder and CEO of ShineForth. “Local businesses are increasingly adopting AI for tasks like generating content, as well as deploying solutions in customer relationship management, inventory forecasting, and personalized marketing. “AI-powered chatbots, for instance, are becoming common for customer service, providing quick and efficient responses to customer inquiries, especially now that they can be pre-trained. The key is to protect confidential information and only implement AI in responsible ways.” Michael Sauers, technology manager at Do Space, said it’s important for businesses to stay ahead of the curve. “In the next year, I envision most of the tech field really embracing the world of AI,” he said. “Artificial intelligence has already come so far in the past year and it will continue to do the same moving forward. Businesses will continue to find practical ways to utilize AI so that they can operate as efficiently as possible.” AI’s application spans numerous industries in the Midlands, notably agriculture. “The Heartland Robotics Cluster in Nebraska received a $25 million Build Back Better grant for AI and robotics in agriculture, highlighting successful projects such as the Grain Weevil for grain bin safety, Birds Eye Robotics for poultry farming automation, and Marble Technology for meatpacking robotics,” said Shonna Dorsey, executive director of Nebraska Tech Collaborative. “These initiatives aim to boost Nebraska’s agricultural efficiency and workforce development. AI is also reinventing the world of health care to augment clinical expertise. The University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) Division of Cardiovascular Medicine and the Interprofessional Experiential Center for Enduring Learning (iEXCEL) have employed AI and

other simulation technology at the Davis Global Center to improve patient outcomes. Three years ago, the University of Nebraska Board of Regents approved the UNMC Center for Intelligent Health Care (CIHC) to enable research and development in AI related to clinical care. “The Center reaches across the four NU campuses to harness the expertise of clinical experts, educators, data scientists, implementation scientists and artificial intelligence scientists to address the challenging problems facing Nebraskans,” said John Windle, director of CIHC. “Educators are building tools to simulate patients and situations that reach and teach all levels of learners, from learning to start an intravenous line in a mannequin to training a team of clinicians to set up a mobile hospital to treat Ebola patients in Africa. “AI also can be used to take real patient data to create novel solutions (like designing a stent to be placed in a patient’s artery) or to be trained to read heart studies. UNMC is pioneering an area of AI health care research termed ‘causality.’ This work helps provide transparent solutions that are understood by clinicians. We are committed to training the next generation of health care professionals, to narrow the gap in care between

urban and rural patients, the rich and the poor, and building it all with uniquely Nebraska values.”

Tips for Adoption

Before introducing and adopting new technology, experts recommend having big-picture goals in mind for your business, as well as a detailed plan that goes with it. “Consider starting with a small, manageable pilot project as a way to experiment with new tech, including AI,” Dorsey explained. “Keeping the customer experience at the forefront, staying current with ongoing tech developments, and being mindful of the ethical use of tech are also key.” Sauers noted that while it’s fine to experiment with new strategies, do so with a goal in mind. “If you know where you want to end up, the better you can steer your decisions in the right direction,” he said. “Keep your communication consistent and transparent. Make sure you’re keeping your stakeholders and employees informed and involved. Transparency helps build trust and buy-in as you change and adapt.”

No sound financial plan would be complete without some disciplined and consistent savings strategies. Yet, a steady journey toward reaching one’s financial goals is easier said than done with more investment platforms than ever before on the market. Fortunately, resources are available to elevate financial literacy and get to the heart of what really matters – building wealth. Creative Planning Partner and Managing Director Ryan Swartz noted that it’s common for investors to not meet their financial goals due to credit card debt, overspending, failing to plan for taxes, neglecting retirement savings, not being adequately insured

and what he characterized as “behavioral mistakes.” “Our clients have a financial plan in place that allows them to manage their progress toward their goals,” he said. “By being accountable to a financial plan that you check in with regularly, you can work to limit the risks of these pitfalls and create a process to remain on track.” Swartz offered a simple solution to overcome many common barriers investors face. “Most of the mistakes that investors are unable to recover from are because they abandoned their strategy, or moved away from the plan they had in place,” he stated. “Part of being a successful

investor is to stick with what you know will have a high probability of success in the long run [even] when it may not be popular in the short term.” While the markets are very unpredictable in the short run, he said, they become more dependable over long periods. “Use this to your advantage to meet your financial goals,” Swartz remarked. “Time in the market versus timing the market.” He encouraged individuals not to charge more than they can afford to on their credit cards and to consistently pay off the entire balance on their card each month, thereby avoiding potentially considerable interest. Additionally, by maintaining emergency funds that account for six months of expenses, Swartz said people can avoid the need to fall back on credit in the event of the unexpected. Establish clear financial goals and priorities. “Beware of spending on food, online shopping and subscriptions, which are all common areas of overspending,” Swartz added. “[Also] be aware of ‘lifestyle creep’ as your income increases over time; increase the savings rate instead of letting

increased spending take away the extra income.” He suggested enlisting the expertise of qualified tax professionals to manage tax payments throughout the year, versus one time during filing, especially as income changes. “Consider strategies such as Roth conversions and tax-efficient income withdrawals if needed,” Swartz said. Automating savings helps with the notion of “paying yourself first,” as he indicated one is more likely to save early and often when the process is “out of sight, out of mind.” Lastly assess personal and financial needs to determine what should be insured. “As your life changes, review these needs from home, auto, and umbrella coverages, to life, medical and disability,” Swartz said. “Determine what may be provided through work, but also what can derail you if you were to sever employment.”

wealth is not taking advantage of 401(k) or retirement plan contributions. “[These families have] significant discretionary income, but they aren’t taking full advantage of their retirement contributions,” he explained. “Maxing out contributions allows for tax-deferred growth and potential employer matches.” Strategies like backdoor Roth contributions, a means of converting nondeductible contributions into a Roth IRA, can provide extra tax advantages. “Additionally, in the event they are 10-plus years away from retirement, making too many changes to their retirement allocation when volatility is present or being too conservative too early can affect long-term returns,” Nieland noted. “Investors need to stay focused on their financial goals and avoid reacting emotionally to short-term market fluctuations.” Largely, he characterized such emotional decisions as among the top hurdles to investors reaching their goals – something that could be avoided with a plan in place. “ … it’s easier to understand the risks and avoid making changes that could affect long-term outcomes,” Nieland added. “Getting a second opinion with a trusted financial professional can confirm you are on track to accomplish your financial goals or

identify what changes could improve that plan.” Another barrier is often quite simply a lack of budgeting. Being prepared with an emergency fund and applying for credit before even needing to, is key. “So, it’s there to use if necessary and there are no barriers that could be a challenge in a tight financial situation,” said David Swearingen, private client relationship manager at Core Bank. Resources, such as apps for tracking expenses, finding trends, saving and planning for the future can be a big help. “It’s also important to be making payments on time, not utilizing more than 50% of available revolving credit lines, and limiting the number of credit inquiries you complete,” said Heather Seaman, senior banking center manager at Core Bank. “When there is the ability to pay balances down or off, concentrate on the highest interest rate first.” For those who are struggling to manage their finances or want to uplift a friend or family member on this front, advisers often use discovery questions and try to see what the client truly wants to accomplish with funds that fit in their budget. “We may have to review statements to help find trends or items that they may be unconsciously spending money on,” Swearingen explained. “Free credit reports are a great way to help a client

Seaman suggested the FDIC website for courses on different aspects of budgeting, saving, credit and lending. These educational offerings can be found at the “resources” tab in its “Consumer Resource Center,” which also features the likes of podcasts, tips, and an electronic deposit insurance estimator. “Fannie Mae offers a first-time homebuyer’s class to help educate on how to save for, buy and what to expect during your first year in home,” she noted. Creative Planning’s Swartz encouraged reviewing one’s financial plan to evaluate for any changes that may impact goals. If you are unable to maximize retirement contributions, he suggested increasing retirement plan contributions to capture any match. “Increase by any amount you can,” he said. “Even 1% to 2% can make a big difference pre-tax.” Rebalancing an investment portfolio also presents an answer for those who are questioning how to manage their flailing finances. “As markets adjust, it makes sense to sell investment gains from areas that are performing well, while adding to areas of weakness

in a disciplined way,” Swartz explained. Be sure to check in on existing insurance coverages and, broadly, risk management needs. “If there are life changes, small adjustments can go a long way,” he said. “Evaluate your health care coverage.” Swartz encouraged implementing an estate plan if you haven’t done so, making sure to verify beneficiaries and review estate planning documents. “This time of year is a great opportunity to do year-end CONTINUED

By partnering with families, Nieland indicated clients can then make the best, most informed decisions regarding their finances. “We are not here to tell you what to do, but rather understand what is important to you, how you define financial freedom and design a path to achieve those goals together,” he stated.

ARCHITECTURE NOW CALLED UNION BANK PLACE, THIS HISTORIC LINCOLN BUILDING DESIGNED BY I.M. PEI AND IS SHAPED TO LOOK LIKE THE STATE OF NEBRASKA.

Behind the Renovation UNION BANK REMODELS ICONIC BUILDING In August 2023, Union Bank & Trust (UBT) held its grand opening for Union Bank Place, a remodel of an iconic building at 13th and O streets in Lincoln. Work on the project began in the spring of 2021.

Renovating an Iconic Building

The building was constructed in 1976 to house the National Bank of Commerce (NBC). After NBC vacated, Wells Fargo occupied the space for many years. “UBT had a branch across ‘O’ Street,” Vice President of Marketing Carol Ash said. “When Wells Fargo decided to no longer lease it, we decided to move into the space because of its history for Lincoln. Turning that space back to its original intent was what we wanted to do with the design. We had a temporary location until the build-out phase on the north side was finished.” The building was designed by I.M. Pei Partners, an internationally acclaimed architecture firm. Among I.M. Pei & Partners’ most notable works is the National Gallery of Art East building in Washington, D.C., the renovation of the Louvre Museum in Paris, and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. The building’s structure is famous for the cast-in-place reinforced concrete, the unique buff color of the concrete, and the attention to local and state design features. For example, on 13th Street, one can see that the building is Page 20 • December 1, 2023

The UBT team’s focus for renovation was to reconnect with the original intent of the building design. - ANGIE MUHLEISEN, PRESIDENT AND CEO OF UNION BANK & TRUST GUESTS AT UNION BANK PLACE ENJOY THE SITTING AREA NEAR THE FIREPLACE, WHICH ALSO FEATURES AN IRRIGATED LIVING WALL.

in the shape of Nebraska and has 93 windows representing the number of counties in Nebraska. “The UBT team’s focus for renovation was to reconnect with the original intent of the building design — be something special for downtown Lincoln and all visitors; be a connector to the UNL campus, the arts, business and the residential areas of downtown; and serve customers in a way that meets today’s banking needs,” said UBT’s President and CEO Angie Muhleisen. The UBT team worked with Sinclair Hille Architects and Brester Construction to design and build out the space to maintain the building. The renovation involved roughly 31,844 square feet and consisted of areas on the main floor, the mezzanine level and second floor. The mezzanine renovation included an updated boardroom and a new lunchroom. The second floor was renovated to accommodate UBT’s management and staff who manage 529 college savings plans.

More Than a Bank

The building includes a pop-up shop, which provides an opportunity for one of UBT’s up-and-coming small businesses to showcase their business and products. Selected businesses will occupy the space for four months. The first pop-up shop business is Susa’s Sweets & Balloons, which will occupy the space until December 31. Stories Coffee was chosen to run the coffee shop at Union Bank Place. “Stories is a customer of ours based out of Omaha,” Ash said. “This is their first location in the Lincoln area. Dan Loutzenhiser, owner of Stories, is very familiar with UBT as he was once an associate working as a teller when he attended UNL.” Also on the main floor on one side of the branch is the community room, which is available to community groups and nonprofits that need a space for their meetings, and on the other side is the small business resource center. “We have strategically moved a small business team into Union Bank Place to help answer questions and guide small businesses,” said UBT’s Vice President of Small Business Stephanie Dinger. UBT integrated digital screens into the design. As one enters the space from the 13th Street door there is a large screen that serves as a welcome to Union Bank Place. To the right is a digital screen promoting the pop-up shop. Two screens anchor the teller stand area. Across from the teller stands is a screen that invites visitors on 13th Street into the space. On the north side of the community room is a large “community” screen, which focuses primarily on sharing a variety of community information, announcements, art and other digital media in addition to bankrelated messaging. “We’re encouraging local organizations and nonprofit community groups to submit information or items they’d like to post to advertise upcoming events or share video clips,” Ash said. The UBT team worked with Nanonation to bring the digital vision to life. Nanonation team members are also working alongside UBT’s marketing team to produce a variety of content displayed on the screen. “Our goal was to breathe new life into the 13th and O intersection, once known as the center of downtown Lincoln,” said Executive Vice President

WHILE THE SIGNATURE CONCRETE FEATURES OF THE ORIGINAL LOBBY WERE UNTOUCHED, RENOVATIONS INCLUDED MODERNIZING THE TELLER LINE, ADDING SPACE FOR STORIES COFFEE CO., MEETING SPACE, A SMALL BUSINESS HUB, IMPROVED LIGHTING AND SEATING THROUGHOUT, AND UPDATING THE CONFERENCE ROOM ON THE MEZZANINE.

Jason Muhleisen. UBT is a privately-owned bank that has 38 full-service and loan production offices in Nebraska and Kansas. It is the third-largest privately owned bank in Nebraska. As of June 30, 2023, it had bank assets of $8 billion and trust assets of $46.1 billion.

SARPY CHAMBER

Operation Holiday Cheer SARPY CHAMBER TEAMS UP WITH OFFUTT TO SUPPORT SERVICE MEMBERS The Sarpy Chamber’s 2023-2024 Magazine & Member Guide gave a spotlight to each of the cities of Sarpy County. The conversation Ryan Hansen at the 55th Wing Public Affairs office at Offutt Air Force Base highlighted the upcoming initiative, Operation Holiday Cheer. Read more about his work and this meaningful project in the excerpt below: As the head of the 55th Wing Public Affairs office at Offutt Air Force Base, Ryan Hansen is used to a work environment where all walks of life cross paths. “There are over 10,000 people working here every day,” he said describing activity on the base, “and we’re proud to share all those different stories and make a connection to the community so people have a sense of pride in the missions that people from all over serve.” The 55th Wing Public Affairs office serves as the vital bridge between Offutt Air Force Base and the surrounding community of Bellevue and Sarpy County, as well as the communication hub for those working and living on the base. Sharing Offutt’s globally scaled mission is important to Ryan, but building local bonds between Offutt and Bellevue is just as rewarding. Operation Holiday Cheer is a special program that Ryan finds to be emblematic of that warm relationship between the base and the city. “It’s a tremendous program that has been going on for years,” he explained, “and it’s made possible by so many volunteers from the Bellevue community.” The objective of this seasonal operation is to fill around 500 gift bags that will be delivered to new service members in the dorms on the base. “They’re brand new, they’re away from home,” Ryan said, describing the need for the bags, “and what better way to say and to show that this
