JACK STRUYK, PRESIDENT OF NEBRASKA OPERATIONS AT LOCKTON COS. IDENTIFIES AREAS OF GROWTH IN MULTIPLE SEGMENTS FOR THE OMAHA OFFICE AS IT HELPS ORGANIZATIONS NAVIGATE CHANGES IN THE INSURANCE AND BENEFITS INDUSTRIES.

LOCKTON COS. BUILDS ON OMAHA OPERATIONS
The Omaha office of Lockton Cos. — a Kansas City-based property and casualty, benefits consulting and retirement plan firm — is marking its 10th year in business by embodying the maxim that crises such as the pandemic, economic downturn, hard market, civil commotion and increased natural catastrophes offer opportunities. The 17,000-square-foot Omaha office at 13710 FNB Parkway, Suite 400, now is staffed by a workforce of 60, up from 50 two years ago. Nebraska President Jack Struyk, a 42-year veteran of the industry, said the local operations of the familyowned firm that was founded in 1966, earns about 60% of its revenues from property and casualty coverage, followed by benefits consulting and the smallest amount, 10%, in retirement plans.
Growth in Nebraska The Nebraska office has gained recognition for its work with clients in specific verticals that include private equity, food and beverage, energy, construction and property. “We are planning for continued double digit growth in all segments, but if I had to choose, I believe benefits and retirement have the largest upside,” Struyk said. “Both sides of the house are facing unprecedented challenges, which will lead to growth for the top brokers.” Whether organizations are fully insured or self-funded, cost related to health plans continues to rise and employers cannot continue to manage health plans as they have in the past, he said.
Changing the Conversation Struyk, a native Omahan, said while the property and casualty market is as hard as it has been in decades, said the best brokers are changing the conversation and the game plan to successfully study risk management plans. The use of analytics has become more prevalent in the product-marketing process, he said.
A longtime client was recently forced to make changes to their program to help control their cost of risk and Lockton ran a dynamic capital model analysis with thousands of loss simulations to model the best retentions/limits/structure of a potential insurance program to maximize return on the client’s capital. In another case, Struyk said his team partners with a Nebraska-based client that previously had been insured through a group captive for many years. “We modeled various coverage structures, including guaranteed cost programs, large deductions, and alternative captives to see how their cash flow would be impacted over the next 10 years based on their prior loss experience,” he said. “Our models incorporated estimated premiums, losses, and retentions, and helped the client determine the most efficient way to deploy their capital when it came to insurance.” Struyk said such work differentiates Lockton from many of its competitors. “Investing in dollars for [training] the people meeting with our clients has enabled us to develop a great mix of business clients in Nebraska that include contractors, large retailers, medical firms, including nursing homes and other skilled health care providers, distribution businesses and manufacturing firms,” he said.
Growing Markets Retirement products were added in 2018. Struyk, who places more than $75,000,000 in premium annually, said it has been his goal to build “bench strength” in Omaha, which is then augmented by specialists from the Kansas City corporate offices. Such is the case with cyber liability coverage. Lockton, since 2012, has hired about 100 cyber liability specialists who work out of the Kansas City headquarters. In Nebraska, Iowa and Minnesota, Struyk is finding more clients are seeking coverage and that multiple-factor authentication factors are not always being met.

Since the pandemic, more clients want policies electronically at a time when the number of personal identifiable records continues to grow — a situation that is coming back to bite them. “Tighter controls are needed,” Struyk said, noting that Lockton specialists partner with outside vendors, and various clients to assure that MFA items are implemented. The property insurance market is changing and becoming more challenging due to the complexity and severity of storms, the intensity of wildfires, hail and tornadoes. Lockton now has technology to study via mapping the probability of flooding. One railroad client sought a study of land in Sarpy County that was being considered for a data center. For employee benefit clients, Lockton continues to be “creative” in monitoring employee use of benefits with the hope of stemming some of the higher premiums clients are charged for employee medical care. InfoLock, a program developed by Lockton, enables a patient’s chronic conditions to be identified along with suggested preventive treatment that in the long run can help lower costs. Adding to a program initiated four years ago, six nurse-advocates in Omaha monitor client accounts and work with patients to carry out physician orders in situations requiring continuous monitoring and care. Diabetes is an example. “We’re working with our clients to drive the health care spending down,” Struyk said.
Struyk is one of 55 Lockton employees not related to the family of founder Jack Lockton to have ownership in the business. The firm, founded in 1966, has more than 8,500 associates and 65,000 clients globally. Organic growth is 13% and the client retention rate is 97%.
Opportunity Ahead The Nebraska office has a client retention rate of 98%, one percent above the 25 U.S. and 56 global offices. It has won numerous awards including two consecutive years as Best Place to Work in the under 250 employee category in an annual competition sponsored by Baird Holm. Since the pandemic hit many Omaha Lockton Cos. office employees have been experiencing a 60/40 office-home work arrangement. Flexibility is the key at present in transitioning employees toward spending more time in the firm’s office. “I’m continually amazed at the bench strength that we’re assembling,” Struyk said. “By being a privately-held company, when we see opportunity, we can evaluate the need and fill that niche quickly.” Struyk, 66, is nearing retirement and has started a transition process that gives three key employees more responsibilities for operations of the office. Tim Huber, vice-president of client services and a 30-year industry veteran, will take an active role in servicing the largest clients. Kirt McAlpine, vice president and producer, will continue to specialize in property and casualty products and be joined by Cody Beguin, as a vice president and producer.

HUMAN RESOURCE management
HR PROFESSIONALS AIM TO ATTRACT AND RETAIN WORKERS BY BROOK STRICKLAND
MICHALA ANDERSON
JOBS EXPERT, ROBERT HALF
For almost two years, the world has faced a series of tumultuous events. What we have cumulatively been through has impacted everything about how we live and work, and because of that, human resources professionals have had to adapt. Experts shared some of the key issues that human resources managers are facing right now and how companies can make sure they are doing the most for their staff.
Key Issues in HR
With 2020 being a year of incredible upheaval, 2021 has served as a time to reinvent what the human resources industry looks like. The pandemic caused workers to rethink what they really want most in a career, in addition to what aligns with their lifestyle and values. This is evident in the large number of workers that are leaving their jobs, not just for new roles, but leaving the workforce altogether. Because of this, HR professionals and other company leaders are getting creative in how they attract and retain talent, and they are considering how to traverse the challenging waters that continue to rise from the pandemic’s worldwide impact. “The demand for talent exceeds the available talent supply,” said Michala Anderson, jobs expert for Robert Half in Omaha. “Employers need to adjust and prioritize their retention strategies to ensure they attract and retain top talent. “Locally, we’re seeing historically low unemployment rates at 1.7% in Omaha. Nebraska is currently sitting at
STEPHANIE HAND SHAREHOLDER, LUTZ
a 2% unemployment rate, which has sequentially decreased over the course of the fourth quarter. Things are looking brighter but work still needs to be done in this recovering economy and retention is a big part of that recovery effort.” Emily Maurice, employment law attorney at Goosmann Law said a lot of HR trends still pertain to COVID-19. “Plenty of companies have questions about whether there can be a requirement for employees to provide proof of vaccination status, a vaccine mandate, and what accommodations need to be provided during the pandemic,” she said. “COVID-19 also compounds issues that were already facing human resources leaders such as gender discrimination, disability accommodations, and retaliation. “Employees are facing child care shortages, health concerns for themselves or family members that can be exacerbated through COVID-19, and increased worry about needing to take time off for either of those issues. While most of the human resources issues are familiar, the issues have taken on new life with the added element of the pandemic.” Anderson noted that human resources leaders are having a lot of discussions about pay and flexibility in hours and location. “Pay raises are on the horizon,” she said. “A shortage of skilled talent is driving up pay. While average starting salaries remained relatively flat in 2021, they’re expected to increase 3.8% overall in 2022. Roles in strong demand may see bigger gains.
ANDREA FREDRICKSON PRESIDENT, REVELA
“This is a candidate’s market and employers must adjust to the needs of workers and job seekers in order to attract and retain them. “In this tight labor market, competitive salaries are table stakes for employers. Companies must regularly revisit pay ranges and discuss career paths with employees to align on expectations. In Omaha, a high volume of candidates who are hoping to see a hybrid model remain after reentry plans are complete. Having that flexibility, we have seen, is as important as salary right now in Omaha.”
Emerging Benefits “Traditionally, employees desire medical insurance, strong retirement savings plans, and paid time off programs,” explained Stephanie Hand, shareholder at Lutz. “The pandemic has increased the desire for flexibility/ remote work options and wellness/ mental health benefits.” Andrea Fredrickson, president of Revela, agreed. “What seem like traditional responses and practices, have been challenged and in many cases, retired,” she said. “Standard, predictable work schedules

have all but been eliminated. People want more time to be with their families or to pursue personal interests — less stress and complexity in their daily lives, with more freedom and flexibility.” Anderson stated, “More than 4 in 10 employers are rethinking employee hours, saying they are open to staff creating their own work hours, less than 40 hours a week, or even four-day workweeks as long as they get the job done.”
Listen to Your Team
With such an intense focus on retaining talent within the workplace, it is important to remember that doing
right by your staff is part of the recipe for company success. Human resources professionals believe this starts with a listening ear. “It used to be that just the best companies were focused on listening to their employees and really putting things into place the things that are truly valuable for their employees,” Fredrickson said. “Today, doing this isn’t an option. It is a base requirement to attract and keep good employees. Truly listen to what people are wanting in their life.” Hand noted that companies can accomplish more by getting continuous feedback from their employees.
“It is important for us to acknowledge that one size doesn’t fit all when it comes to the employee experience — in fact, one size fits one,” Hand said. “Understanding and getting to know your employees’ stories, preferences, strengths, and needs is important to retaining, developing, and motivating them. Most important, work every day to inspire mutual trust with your employees. It takes ongoing effort, but it’s the secret sauce to a successful culture and organization.” An open-door policy also helps make way for human resources to create an equal playing field for all employees.
Page 10 • December 10, 2021
“Ensuring that there is an equal playing field also looks different than it did pre-pandemic,” Maurice said. “Pre-pandemic looked to equal pay, equal hours, and equal opportunities for advancement. “Now, an equal playing field looks to how employers can respond to accommodations for lack of child care or medical concerns or the desire to work remotely. The thing that employers are dealing with today is more of a leveling out of employee satisfaction and employer needs, rather than an equalization of employee to employee. But employer focus right now is

Communication is the key element to running an effective business with satisfied employees. - EMILY MAURICE, GOOSMANN LAW maintaining a successful business along with employee satisfaction.” Mike Bojanski, vice president of human resources for Finley Engineering, stressed that an equal playing field means emphasizing the need for strategic focus and integration of diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in all parts of business operations. And it starts from the top down. “Diversity, equity and inclusion is not an initiative or program, it is a cultural imperative,” he said.
Hot Button Issues
As an HR leader, there will be various issues that arise in the workplace but knowing how to navigate some of the most prevalent ‘hot buttons’ with sensitivity and a focus on education is imperative — especially right now, with issues still arising out of the pandemic. “The most prevalent legal ‘hot button’ issue today is vaccine status,” Maurice said. “This includes whether employees are required to provide his or her vaccine status and whether an employer can
mandate a vaccine. Other issues focus on gender — one is the fact that women are leaving the workforce in droves due to several reasons, the biggest being a lack of child care … the ‘Me Too’ movement is still very relevant. “Human resource managers must work harder to ensure employees are educated on these issues and that any training can be effectively provided to employees regardless of an employee’s work location. Companies need to make sure that effective communication is

the number one goal … a company that can provide effective communication to its employees will have the most satisfied employees.” COVID-19 vaccine mandates and paid family leave are current hot button issues. “My experience in a 30+ year career is that the legal hot buttons typically remain the same but depending on the makeup of the federal government, certain hot buttons get hotter,” Bojanski said.
The demand for talent exceeds the available talent supply. Employers need to adjust and prioritize their retention strategies to ensure they attract and retain top talent. - MICHALA ANDERSON, JOBS EXPERT, ROBERT HALF IN OMAHA
Reshaping Leadership While good leaders can truly lead no matter what is thrown at them, human resources leaders have needed to lean into their strategic thinking skills these last two years, and this will continue to be the case looking ahead. “I believe strategic thinking HR leaders have always embraced flexibility for their teams which included allowing team members to balance work responsibilities and personal responsibilities, allowing remote working arrangements, and trusting team members will get the
work done regardless of where or when they work,” Bojanski said. “Effective HR leaders have embraced what the younger generations feel, ‘working to live instead of living to work.’” Hand noted that managing people on an individual basis is as important now than it ever was. “We have all navigated, interpreted and survived the pandemic in our own ways and with this, we have to continue to motivate and manage team members with empathy and individual understanding,” she said. “In turn, our HR staff will do the same for other
employees. With the continued challenges of the unique labor market, HR managers are encouraging their team members to think creatively about how to best attract, connect, develop, and retain talent.” One thing is certain, effective leaders must be skilled in communicating and connecting with people, so they can hear what employees need and ultimately, make a difference in the workplace. “Leadership amid a pandemic requires effective communication,” Maurice said. “Some employees want to have the option to work remotely or have medical restrictions that require exceptions to the
traditional workday and workplace. “There are other employees who simply want to continue doing their job without having to provide medical information or continue to be in a physical work location that is outside of the home. The pandemic has increased the range of employee desires and needs and human resources managers need to be open to that fact and respond accordingly. Communication is the key element to running an effective business with satisfied employees.”

FOCUSING ON PREVENTION
WORKPLACE safety DANNI ARROYO, OWNER, WORK SAFE CONSULTING, LLC
Preventing Injury
WORK SAFE CONSULTING MAKES IMPACT ON WORKSITES Work Safe Consulting was born out of a desire to prevent on-thejob injuries. Founded by Danni Arroyo in 2018, the company provides professional consulting and on-site clinic services to companies in Nebraska and Iowa seeking assistance for injury prevention, ergonomics education, and much more.
The American Dream Arroyo came from an immigrant family, with her dad coming to the United States from Costa Rica at the age of 19. He worked various construction jobs and learned English along the way. Eventually, he started his own roofing company, working diligently to provide a good life for his family. “Watching my dad work so hard during my childhood in order to provide the American dream for my sisters and myself set me up to have two things in life: an unrelenting work ethic and a passion for keeping safe those people who were working hard to provide their own American dream for their own families,” she said. Arroyo was the first member of her family to attend college and graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a
doctorate from Creighton University. “I have always been very passionate about impacting my community, and Work Safe Consulting is my way of providing my gifts to my community,” she said. Arroyo had experience developing industrial and office ergonomic programs as an employee at companies in the past and decided to venture out and work towards her dream of starting her own business. Today, her three-year-old company provides a variety of services for clients looking to prevent workplace injuries through education and proactive training that combine prevention services and ergonomics, which help fit the workspace to the worker.
Relationship-focused Model Work Safe Consulting’s business model is centered on building partnerships with clients. It works closely with company management to learn the ins and outs of each worksite, to best recommend improvements to the space. “We also strongly focus on education when working with employees,” Arroyo said. “We strive to understand the ‘why’ behind an employee that

may be experiencing discomfort at work. We then provide education on how to prevent that in the future. Knowledge is power, and the more knowledge an employee has regarding staying safe at work, the less likely they will be to experience an injury in the future.” Through Work Safe Consulting’s on-site prevention clinics, employees have free access to a skilled occupational therapist at their place of employment. This allows them to help catch work-related discomfort early and help prevent it from becoming a serious injury later.
Expanding Reach Arroyo has hired a team of three other occupational therapists to work with her at Work Safe Consulting and since the company’s inception, revenue has grown year over year. The team takes significant time to get to know each client’s business so it can provide the most impactful solutions for them. This is not only a win for Work Safe Consulting, but for the clients. “We are keeping Nebraska’s and Iowa’s workers uninjured,” Arroyo said. “HR professionals will often use our services as a recruiting tool. Employees seem to be more content when working for employers who truly care about their well-being.” Companies are continuing to recognize the value of Work Safe Consulting’s services, especially as the cost of health care and workers’ compensation are on the rise. “Prevention models, such as the one we have developed, will continue to grow as employers see the benefit of providing preventative services,” she said.
“We help to control workers’ compensation costs by preventing work-related injuries before they happen.”
Challenging Tradition Arroyo noted that one of her biggest hurdles in growing the company has been finding like-minded occupational therapists to hire. “The prevention model I have developed is very different than the reactionary model that exists in traditional therapy,” she said. “The majority of the services we provide to our clients and their employees are centered around education, rather than treatment. Some therapists think the model is fantastic, others are very uncomfortable with the idea of providing education rather than insurance-based treatment.” Once she hires a new therapist, they undergo a full training on the company’s model, so they are ready to start interacting with clients. Looking ahead, Arroyo believes that demand for her company’s services will continue to grow. “Caring enough about your employees to provide prevention services can help a company to stand out to potential employees in this very tough job market that all employers are facing currently,” she said. “I believe that employers will need to start looking at prevention services in order to control their costs of business. Ensuring your employees are not injured can lead to many cost savings.”

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?R
40 under 40 ANDREW HUNT, CO-OWNER/PARTNER, HILEY HUNT
Financial Partner
ANDREW HUNT ENJOYS LASTING CLIENT RELATIONSHIPS To understand just how immediate Andrew Hunt’s impact in the financial services industry was, consider he was recognized as a Midlands Business Journal 40 Under 40 honoree in 2012 and nearly a decade later, he’s still well under the age cap for that award. But for as much of a 20-something-year old whiz as he was back then, cutting his teeth for Guiderock Capital Management, time has only ripened his expertise and effectiveness in his chosen field. Now a partner in his own firm, Hiley Hunt Wealth Management, he leverages that tenure into an ever-lengthening list of new and existing clients alike.
Out of Happenstance Not bad for a guy whose Plan A fizzled out mightily at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. “I kind of fell into this industry,” Hunt said. “I was a chemistry major in college and was going to flunk out of chemistry, so I switched majors to accounting. My roommate’s dad was an accountant and I thought well, he seems to be successful.
“I went down the path of accounting and tax and took my first job working down at Gallup as a staff accountant. I had the opportunity there to start serving Gallup associates and their family members with their financial planning needs, really just out of happenstance. It was fortuitous how it got started because I really did fall in love with it.” Hunt’s unique mix of experience and youth – he’s currently 35 – makes him something of an industry unicorn. Long-time savers like his street cred, while younger (but no less-knowledgeable) clients relate to him generationally. His wellproven approach appeals to all comers. “When I first got into the business, it was a culture that financial planners were the knowledge gatekeepers,” he said. “With the rise in the internet, that’s no longer the case. The planner’s not the gatekeeper of knowledge and we’re not the gatekeeper of products anymore. “In our practice, we’re there to equip and coach and counsel rather than come down from the mountain with knowledge or some product they didn’t know about. I like to think I’ve always worked that way, but now you have to work that way for sure.”

I think this is probably a universal statement in the work-from-home movement, but we’re seeing that clients are actually preferring a lot more Zoom video technology, a lot more Facetime, a lot more techenabled interactions than ever before. - ANDREW HUNT, CO-OWNER/PARTNER, HILEY HUNT
Young Savers Appealing to younger savers in particular holds other advantages. While all investors had to resort to technology during the early days of COVID-19, many of Hunt’s clients have made no bones about their preference for such gadgets going forward. This has forced a pivot into a dramatically different working environment, Hunt said. “In 2012, I was serving individuals and families all over the country and we still do that today at our current firm. We serve clients in 30 states,” he said. “But I was spending a lot more time on airplanes and in airports and hotels than I do today. We still get on the airplane and go visit people, but it seems to be that the job demands a lot less of that, and that’s of course been accelerated since the pandemic. “I think this is probably a universal statement in the work-from-home movement, but we’re seeing that clients are actually preferring a lot more Zoom video technology, a lot more Facetime, a lot more tech-enabled interactions than ever before.”
Community Connection Hunt keeps his finger on the pulse on various aspects of the community through his service activities, primary of which are Omaha Street School, Lifegate Church and UNO’s Scholars Academy through which he has mentored college students for six years.
“I think that one of the biggest things is he’s very approachable and he really does make time for the students to ask him questions,” said Bethany Hughes, director of the CBA Scholars Academy. “The students who’ve been paired with Andrew consistently talk about how wonderful their meetings are, how beneficial they are and how they will continue to stay in contact with him even after they complete the program. In that sense, he’s ideally what a mentor should be, approachable but also with a lot of good information, a lot of good experience.” Hunt meets each mentee where they are, although secretly he’d love to preach the merits of a career in financial planning, seeing unprecedented opportunity in the gigantic turnover of wealth from baby boomers that continues to unfold. He said while Hiley Hunt is and shall remain a boutique firm, this opportunity makes staffing a primary challenge for the future. “We are a talent-based business, so we’re only as good as the talent that works here,” he said. “We’re not out there hiring a hundred people a year, which makes the talent thing that much more important because we are a small team. “Being a financial planner is the greatest job in the world. I am shocked that more people don’t do it, because it’s incredibly fulfilling. You can make a great living; if you have an entrepreneurial spirit, you can be an entrepreneur. And you get to help people every single day with some of the most important decisions they’ll make in their lives. I love what I do.”

CONNECTION THROUGH COFFEE
WOMEN WHO rock AUTUMN PRUITT, PRESIDENT, OWNER, HARDY COFFEE CO.
BREWING connections
AUTUMN PRUITT’S INGENUITY FUNDAMENTAL TO HARDY COFFEE CO. A multi-faceted java-fueled business was percolating well before Autumn Pruitt started Hardy Coffee Co. during the not-so-great recession as a 23-year-old business administration and humanities graduate. She didn’t have rose-colored glasses, though. “I started working in a small bakery to make sure that the dream I had matched up with the actual work in a commercial kitchen,” she recalled. “It didn’t disappoint.” Less than a year later, Pruitt and her husband, Luke, took over the lease and purchased equipment from her then-employer. “In 2012, we acquired the coffee shop we had been subleasing from and have since opened three additional locations,” she said. “In 2015, we began roasting our own coffee under the brand Hardy Coffee Co.” Later, every piece — bakery, coffee shops, roasting lab — and every location — downtown, Benson, North Omaha, Chalco — was unified under the Hardy brand. Pruitt owes much of her going “all in” on coffee and baked goods to her upbringing.
“We always joked that there should have been a couch in the kitchen, because that’s where we all managed to gather,” she said. “I’m convinced,” she continued, “that there is no more authentic way to bring people together than around delicious things. For us, every cinnamon roll and mug of coffee is an invitation to rest and gather and connect.” The familial connections don’t stop there; Pruitt’s grandfather, Leo Bastron, was a cook in the Air Force during WWII. Post-military service, he worked at a bakery in Gering, Nebraska. “’Hardy’ is a real word, of course,” she added. “We hope that the name of our brand resonates with the resiliency of our Midwestern customers. But it’s also my maiden name.” Interestingly, neither one of Pruitt’s parents were coffee drinkers when she was growing up. “My dad is now on board with Hardy Coffee every morning, but my mom will forever order from the tea menu,” she said. “I think coffee love may be a recessive gene.”

I’m convinced that there is no more authentic way to bring people together than around delicious things. - AUTUMN PRUITT, PRESIDENT, OWNER
Recipe for a Buzzy Business
As a young entrepreneur, seeking funds amid a historic credit meltdown, Pruitt recalled how banks weren’t “too keen” on lending to her. “From the very beginning, we had to be creative and scrappy in the ways we funded the operation and spent money,” she said. Pruitt has also had the fortune of leaning into an “incredible support system.” “I have a husband who has jumped into this dream with both feet and, even after seeing the ugly and hard parts of it all for the past 11 years, continues to bet on us,” she said. “This last year, he finally made his way onto the payroll after working for free for years … It’s been so rewarding to run after this vision together.” Success, she said, isn’t a “secret.” “People tend to romanticize their plans, but dread the daily work of executing them,” Pruitt asserted. “A successful business, just like a successful life, is about doing the next right thing. About following through on the things you know are right.” And Pruitt hasn’t experienced the “industry mantra” of “you just can’t hire good help.” “True leaders and some of the best humans I know who have come alongside me on this journey to help shoulder the load — and to have so much fun in the process,” she said. Speaking more to the industry as a whole, Pruitt said women have been baking forever and are increasingly better represented in specialty coffee circles. “Most of the work I do these days is not the physical work of baking and brewing, but that of CEO of a small business,” she said. To that end, she cites a 2021 Small Business Trends survey, whereby a reported 31% of small business or franchise owners are women (up from 27% year prior). “The relationships I have built with other women entrepreneurs has been lifegiving to me on this journey,” Pruitt said. “We experience a unique set of challenges in creating and building and leading, without a safety net that being part of a large organization provides.” She said it’s a reminder of how much representation matters in any type of role that needs more diversity. “When you connect with — or even just see — someone in a role who you can identify with, it creates precedent and the encouragement to attempt it, too,” she said.
Fueling Others’ Successes
The question of how she inspires others is a “loaded” one for Pruitt. “The danger comes in trying to be inspiring,” she said. “A few years ago, we went through the process of closing one of our shops. From the outset, everything about it seemed like it would be wildly profitable.” After all, the Hardy team had done the painstaking work of planning, building, staffing, training. “But it just never worked,” she said. “I had my first baby just two months after this location opened and it felt like, for two years, I was trying desperately to keep everything together. To say the right things. To hide the mistakes. To do the same things I had done before and more, and to learn how to step into a new role as a mom at the same time.” Exhausted, discouraged and on the verge of bankruptcy, Pruitt worked up the courage to be completely vulnerable with her team. She showed them the real, hard truths.. “And it turns out that the stories I had been telling weren’t nearly as endearing or inspiring as what was true,” she said. “Since then, I’ve tried to lean into authenticity much more than trying to craft a message that rallies anyone.” Pruitt also acknowledged what she characterized as the “wildly talented people” before her, who contributed to making specialty coffee more mainstream and a staple in people’s lives. “I’m so grateful for the work they’ve done that has served as an on-ramp for me and my business,” she said. “I am also thankful to be on the front end of some of these trends in Omaha. But, in a global economy, we really have the benefit of sharing information and knowledge and trends in ways that push us ahead so much faster than we could go on our own. Going forward, the Hardy Coffee Co. team is committed to growing its coffee program to partner with wholesale accounts across the region. “We want to become a regional partner with anyone looking to open a shop or brew really good coffee in the neighborhoods they know and love,” she said. The business’s roasting side is also being cultivated. “I plan to develop direct relationships with coffee growers around the world,” Pruitt said. “We work with a really great importer now. But I’d love for our team to visit and personally connect with these operations in the same ways that we invest in our communities and teams here.”

OPERA OMAHA HAS TAKEN AN ACTIVE STANCE ON INCLUSION WITH THE HIRING OF ANDREA JOY PEARSON, THE FIRST DIRECTOR OF BELONGING AND INCLUSION FOR THE COMPANY. In a press release Opera Omaha said that Pearson will “work with the staff and board of directors to create an organization-wide equity-based goals and strategies, with an initial focus in the areas of recruitment, onboarding, and employee engagement.” “Opera Omaha is deeply committed to anti-racism and anti-oppression, and it is imperative that we have expertise within the staff to help drive this organizational growth forward,” said Shannon Walenta, managing director. “Already in the few weeks since she joined the team she is positively impacting the culture within the company and building new relationships in the community.” The position blends Pearson’s two passions: music and DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) work. In college, Pearson studied music (voice and opera), graduating with her bachelor’s degree in music from Oberlin College in 2011, followed by a master’s degree in music from the University of Kentucky in 2014. She held various roles before becoming the office manager with the Inclusion, Equity, and Diversity Program at Kennesaw State University in Georgia in 2018. She became a SHRM Certified Professional in 2019 and earned a certification in workplace diversity, equity and inclusion from USF Corporate Training and Professional Education. “I am excited to join hands with Opera Omaha in curating the voice of opera in the 21st century by bolstering awareness and opportunities to enhance diversity, equity and inclusion within the operatic field of artists, administrators, and guests,” Pearson said in the release.
NEBRASKA MARKETMAKER

AS AN AGRICULTURE STATE, NEBRASKA HAS PLENTY OF LOCALLY GROWN PRODUCE AND MEAT TO OFFER BUT CONNECTING THE FARMER TO THE CUSTOMER HAS ALWAYS BEEN A CHALLENGE, LEAVING GAPS IN THE MARKETS. In a press release, Nebraska Extension educator Ben Jewell said: “We struggle with local food sources in public schools and universities because it’s a lot of work, it takes time, and it’s a challenge. Buyers already have established distributors, and farmers who would like to sell directly to schools don’t always know how to get started.” Last spring the Nebraska Extension set out to reinvigorate a tool that will help solve the gap in communication. MarketMaker, first launched in 2004 by a team from the University of Illinois Extension program, is a free tool that hosts a searchable database to connect farmers to potential customers. Jewell said that the Nebraska Extension has been using the platform for over a decade, but last spring it decided to dedicate more time to the platform to improve accuracy and experience. The tool allows users to create a business profile where they can tell potential customers about where they’re located, what they sell, if they have certifications, product attributes, and more. “The main thing we will be working on going forward is raising awareness about the site, working with partners to encourage farm to food business owners to register with Nebraska MarketMaker, and ensuring the information is accurate on the site,” Jewell said. There are close to 600 producer/business profiles in Nebraska that include farmers, ranchers, packers, processors, value-added producers, restaurants, and grocery stores. Information on producers in Nebraska can be found at ne.foodmarketmaker.com.
CREIGHTON UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE LONG BEFORE COVID-19 EXPOSED THE SHORTCOMINGS OF MENTAL HEALTH CARE ACCESSIBILITY, SHANNON KINNAN, MD, WAS TEACHING A MODEL THAT COULD INCREASE AVAILABILITY EVEN AMONGST A SHORTAGE OF PSYCHIATRISTS.
Since 2016 she has been teaching Creighton University Medical School residents about the Collaborative Care Model with the help of her employer, One World Community Health Centers. The approach makes the primary care physician an active team member in treating mental health needs alongside therapists and psychiatrists. For example, if a patient sees their primary care physician and is diagnosed with a mental health condition the primary care physician would take the lead on treatment instead of referring to a psychiatrist who may not be available for weeks or months. The primary care doctor would start a first line of treatment, paired with a program were they received therapy. The therapist would monitor the patient to see if the treatment was improving. If there wasn’t improvement, the therapist would bring the case to the psychiatrist who can then offer advice, like changing dosage or medicine. “The program is designed to make sure the patient continues to improve,” Kinnan said. Additionally, in a press release Kinnan said “the integration of behavioral health and general medical services improves patient health outcomes, decreases health care costs, and reduces mental health stigma.” Residents spend 12 afternoons with Kinnan at One World to learn the model, with the hope that they will take this model into their future practice. THE GROVE COMING OUT OF THE INITIAL WAVES OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, THE GROVE JUICERY & WELLNESS CAFÉ PICKED UP WHERE IT LEFT OFF BY ADDING ITS HEALTH + WELLNESS LIFESTYLE MARKET.
Since opening over three years ago the Café — which focuses on cold-pressed juices, plant-based milks, wellness shots, tonics and super foods — has had a small retail selection that included superfood, adaptogen and CBD collections. The health + wellness lifestyle market adds grocery, beauty, supplements and vitamins. “When we start to understand how to take care of ourselves properly, fueling our mind, body, and spirit on a cellular level to see & feel the vital benefits, that is when we can start to optimize our lives,” said owner Meghann Schense. Schense has spent months researching and testing what products to carry. Taking into account a growing trend towards ingredient transparency, she has paid special attention to traceable ingredients, as well as products that are ethically and sustainably made. “Consumers are driving transparency, which is essential in the evolution of our astronomical food and agricultural industries that are literally feeding out existence,” she said. She highlighted brands such as PULP, a chip made from the pulp that results from juicing, as well as 12 Tides, a puffed kale chip, for being “delicious, sustainable and highly nutritious.” Located at 2401 Farnam St. in Omaha, the café is open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“ We were looking to make university education more accessible to our employees.” ANDREA HARGUS Director of Human Resources Mutual of Omaha
Why Mutual of Omaha works with Bellevue University to offer valuable education services.
“ Mutual of Omaha prides itself on promoting a learning culture.
We have implemented several programs designed to encourage our associates to continue their learning, whether through formal education, industry education, internal course offerings, or applicable experiences. We worked with Bellevue University to make university education more accessible to our associates. Bellevue University supports our tuition reimbursement program, offers courses that work for working adults, and degree programs that are relevant to careers. Our hope was that our associates would take advantage of this benefit, and they have! We have had more than 25 individuals graduate from Bellevue University through this program and another 75 are currently enrolled. Our associates are appreciative of the opportunity, resources, and connection Mutual of Omaha provides through this relationship with Bellevue University.”
