40 UNDER 40

Dear Readers,

One of my favorite issues each year is the Midlands Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 edition. 2022 marks the 21st anniversary of the awards, which are presented by Northwest Bank. Over the years, MBJ has honored both up-andcoming and accomplished young professionals under the age of 40 in the Omaha metro business community.

Midlands Business Journal was founded by my father in 1975. His desire was to publish a weekly business newspaper covering local business news and entrepreneurship. In 2002 he created an awards event honoring 40 young professionals under the age of 40.

Since then, MBJ has recognized over 800 YPs, and beginning in 2006, a special award has been given to the Entrepreneur of the Year.

This year we are honored to recognize three individuals, Dan Houghton, Steve Dugger and Jeff Dugger, founders of Buildertrend, as our Entrepreneurs of the Year.

Over the past 21 years, all of the honorees have excelled in their careers as well as made great contributions to the community. The Omaha metro is an extraordinary place to live. The creative talent and determination that I witness in the young professional population along with their generosity of spirit is why I am so proud to call this home.

The past few years have created challenges for all of us but also incredible opportunities for growth and innovation, and that is what I see in the group we are honoring this year. As you read about these individuals in the pages ahead, ask yourself, “What else is possible?” They are leading the way to the future and breaking barriers that will create even more.

Q&A with President Clay Baker

Q: What is your professional background?

A: I’ve been a banker in Omaha for 18 years: Eleven with Northwest Bank and seven with a large national bank. All of my experience as a banker has been in the commercial lending field. Prior to that, I worked for Ford Motor Credit Company for 11 years in various roles in commercial finance and moved around with them from Oklahoma to California and then to Texas.

My years with Northwest Bank have been the best of my career. The values of this organization align with mine. The leadership team and owners of Northwest Bank are incredible people who have their priorities in the right order. They truly care about their employees, customers, and community, which makes for a great place to work. Many places say these things but don’t back it up when it comes to decisions that affect employees, customers, and community.

Q: What are your biggest goals as president going into 2023?

A: My biggest goal for 2023 will be to build upon the great success we’ve had throughout the years in Omaha. We don’t need to change who we are. We simply need to continue to grow. We’ll grow our business, our employees and give back to the community that has blessed us. Sure, our business will have to adapt to new technology like everyone else, but we can do that while preserving our culture of putting people first. I’m fortunate to be a part of this great team in Omaha and excited about our future.

Q: Northwest Bank has been a sponsor of the 40 Under 40 awards since its inception, can you talk about what it means to the bank to recognize young leaders and entrepreneurs?

A: All businesses have a starting point. Many of the larger successful businesses in our community had humble beginnings. Many couldn’t find a bank willing to take a chance on them at the very beginning. They weren’t started at the perfect time under the perfect circumstances. If you believe in yourself and your idea, then don’t give up. When things get difficult (and they will), push onward. Surround yourself with good advisers, other successful business owners and take good care of your customers. I’m over-simplifying a bit here, but someone is buying a service or product from you. If you treat them better than your competition through that interaction, they’ll come back. One day, you might be the business that everyone is talking about.

A: We are nothing without our customers. Twenty years ago, we partnered with the Midlands Business Journal by sponsoring the 40 Under 40 event. Back then our main focus was on lending to small businesses and their owners. Many of those customers are still with the bank today. Those customers are part of the foundation of this bank. We got our start together. Although we’re established now, we’re still very focused on lending to businesses and their owners. It is the lifeblood of our bank. These young leaders and entrepreneurs are the next generation of this community and are making a big impact on our future. They are making this community better and helping to sustain Omaha and the surrounding area. If Buildertrend founders Dan Houghton, Steve Dugger and Jeff Dugger had thrown in the towel every time things got rough the company would never have made it past year one, let alone through The Great Recession or the COVID-19 pandemic.

“There’s been a lot of bumps along the road,” Steve Dugger said.

Leap of Faith

In fact, if they had stopped when they couldn’t obtain financing the company wouldn’t have existed.

“We had a lot of conviction,” Houghton said. “We convinced

ourselves that this idea was a really good idea, with or without investors.”

He jokes that it may have also been because they were so young when the trio founded the company in 2006.

But it could also be said that together they made a good team, each specializing in a different aspect of the company, but able to cover each other when needed.

“[My advice]; go into business with people that you trust,” Jeff Dugger said. “I would trust these guys to the end of the earth to do things that would be in the company’s best interests.”

Operating lean in the beginning helped when The Great Recession hit in 2007, lasting until 2009 and hitting the company’s primary demographic, residential contractors, hard. At the time they had between five to eight employees.

“I think we learned a lot by just putting one foot in front of the other, keeping our heads down, and powering through,” Steve Dugger said. “I think because of what those [employees] did, we still have an element of scrappiness in our company DNA.”

They agreed that the recession, albeit stressful, was a blessing in

disguise as it ended up weeding out competitors while increasing their business.

“The lesson learned there was don’t throw in the towel too early just because things aren’t going your way,” Steve Dugger said.

Staying True

Their resolve was tested again in 2020 when COVID-19 began to creep into the Midwest, prompting companies to lay off or furlough employees to conserve resources.

“As a leader of a company, the biggest challenge is to focus on what you can control,” Houghton said. “I can’t control pandemics, but I can control how we spend money and what we do at the company.”

Faced with the question of what to do, they considered their biggest asset.

“Our biggest asset in the software industry is definitely our employees,” Steve Dugger said. “We wanted to make sure that we kept this family together and didn’t have to start over.”

The team decided to ride it out for as long as possible without sacrificing staff members. Buildertrend went remote, and leadership worked to support staff members who were grappling with major lifestyle changes.

“It made us realize really quickly that our company is a lot bigger than just the four walls of our headquarters,” Jeff Dugger said.

Buildertrend has over 900 employees in 36 states and is used in over 100 countries.

The decision paid off as the construction industry remained strong. As companies considered work-from-home or hybrid business models, demand increased for Buildertrend’s target demographic, residential contractors.

Power of the People

Buildertrend, as a company, is currently using a hybrid/flexible work schedule, and is currently only sitting at about 50% capacity at its

corporate headquarters in Omaha.

In some ways, Steve Dugger said, it’s selfish that as employers they want their employees to return to the office full time. But, it also has to deal with the culture they’ve cultivated and won multiple awards for.

Buildertrend has been named one of Omaha’s Best Places to work since 2019, as well as one of Inc.’s Best Workplaces since 2020.

Benefits include traditional perks such as health, vision, and dental insurance, as well as creative perks that employees can select from, such as tuition reimbursement, student loan repayment, and child care assistance.

The goal, according to Houghton, is to thank employees for choosing to work for Buildertrend by offering them benefits that matter to them.

“Is there life better outside of the walls of our organization because they work here?” Houghton said.

To that end, removing barriers and encouraging employees to get involved in their community have been central.

The company, which has offered paid volunteer time off for years, launched the Volunteer Spotlight Award in 2021 to recognize dedicated employees. Winners receive a $1,000 bonus and a $1,000 companysponsored donation to a nonprofit of their choice.

In 2022, Buildertrend doubled its paid volunteer time off hours to 16.

Leading by Example

In 2021, the philanthropic arm called BT Cares, distributed over $90,000 to nonprofits. At the beginning of 2022, it announced a 22% increase in donation dollars.

“It is an awesome feeling to be able to give back to the community we grew up in and share that success back,” Jeff Dugger said.

It’s a reminder, in some ways, of where they started as three guys in a basement.

“Now there’s people that are building lives around our idea,” Steve Dugger said. “I think that’s pretty special.”

What is your advice for young professionals?

Find resources who can help guide you on what you choose to work on and who you choose to work on it with. So often we think there’s a hack to get to where you want more quickly — make more money, get that next promotion, etc. More often, it’s spending time preparing for opportunities that present themselves at completely unknown and unexpected times.

What has been the most fulfilling moment in your career?

The most fulfilling stretch of my career was shortly after transitioning from public accounting to the private sector with McGill Restoration. I was able to consistently find ways to bring value to the team which opened new doors. Big picture decisions made during that time frame have helped set up the organization for long-term success.

Tell us about a mentor who has had a positive impact on your career.

Through a series of serendipitous connections, I met a successful local real estate developer who had a significant impact on my path as an entrepreneur. Ultimately the single, most impactful thing he did that changed the trajectory of my life and business career is introduce me to the Nebraska chapter of the Entrepreneurs’ Organization.

What has been the most fulfilling moment in your career?

The year we launched our roof donation program, we selected a woman who had just lost her husband of 40-plus years and had recently retired from a lifelong career at OPS. Through a series of unfortunate events, the home her husband built for their family was deteriorating. Her warm heart and smile were contagious. The moment I will never forget was showing up on our last day of work and our team presented her with a Thanksgiving dinner and all of the fixings to celebrate at her home, and to our surprise, she had also prepared a full Thanksgiving dinner for our entire team and invited everyone into her home to enjoy together and I knew that we were truly leaving each neighborhood better than we found it.

What is something about you that not everyone knows? I used to be a fire twirler.

What is your advice for young professionals?

My advice to young professionals would be get comfortable being uncomfortable. There’s going to be a lot of times in your career when you have to have tough conversations. Do not shy away from those, embrace them and they will make you better for it in the long run. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there —it’s important to get exposure in different areas.

What has been the most fulfilling moment in your career?

I would say becoming a team leader was a very fulfilling part of my career. It really meant a lot to me that my company trusted me to lead and develop our sales team going forward.

I would say the passion in the city. Whether it’s about public transportation, or supporting local shops, there seems to be a burning passion to band together and fix issues that come up and support others in this community.

Ask for help when you need it, and you will need it. Finally, and most importantly, know yourself and what drives you. Just because you are good at something does not mean it’s a good fit for you long term.

My most fulfilling career moment has been launching and leading the Omaha Community Foundation’s Impact Investing Program. Through this program, our team developed a Community Loan Fund that makes flexible, affordable loans to local nonprofits.

I am also honored to serve as the first female CEO for our organization in its 155-year history.

I spent about five years modeling starting at age 15. I had agencies in Minneapolis, New York and Athens, Greece and had the opportunity to spend a summer in Athens and traveled around the US. I didn’t appear in anything notable, but it was definitely an experience to remember!

What is your advice for young professionals?

My advice for your professionals is to seek what you love and learn as much as you can. You must do the fundamentals but take the opportunity to accelerate your learning curve. Seek out individuals that you regard as your heroes and try to learn from them and their core values. Finally, take the time to give back to the next generation.

What is something about you that not everyone knows?

Early in my career, I did not have confidence and did not enjoy speaking in public or receiving the spotlight. In the first few years of my professional career, I just always assumed I did not know the answers in meetings or that others always did. I also was afraid of making a mistake. I have learned that you need to be thoughtful but amplify your voice and use your voice as a tool to amplify others.

He shared with me the triumphs and hurdles of dealings in his career, which helped accelerate my growth in this industry. But if there’s one person who has truly been a guiding light for me through everything it’s my wife, Kayla. I can say with absolute certainty that Kayla is that person for me. Having her as a sounding board for ideas is crucial for me.

What is your advice for young professionals?

Outwork your competition, have a business plan and learn when to pivot. Having a business plan was something I lacked early on and something that I desperately needed. I eventually figured out that these four things are absolutely essential keys to having long-term success: know your metrics, know your employees, know your market, learn to plan ahead. Know when to pivot.

After college, I had an opportunity to be part of the management teams on prestigious Omaha projects such as TD Ameritrade Park, The Durham Museum – Truhlsen Lecture Hall, and the Salvation Army’s Kroc Center. I joined Project Control in 2011 as a project manager and quickly advanced to a senior project manager. At 33, I received another promotion to regional vice president. I have managed the Midwest office into a growing and successful project management and owner’s representative firm with more than $800 million in completed Midwest projects.

What is your advice for young professionals?

My advice to young professionals is to enjoy the challenges. Working in an industry prone to unforeseen issues and continuously developing solutions has led me to appreciate the need to overcome challenges. As you work hard, make the correct choices, and choices you would take back, it is all part of your experience and constant improvement.

What has been the most fulfilling moment in your career?

I cannot pinpoint one moment, but to me, it is grand openings on projects that everyone involved has found the project process enjoyable and successful. I would also say that being part of some incredible projects in my still young career and playing a role in their success makes me that dad who always has to point them out to my wife and kids in the car.

What do you love about the Greater Omaha community?

I grew up in a small farming community/town, and I have always appreciated the community feel of knowing your neighbors and helping each other out in times of need. I truly never thought that would be the case in Omaha when I moved here after college. But in truth, my wife Brittany, our kids, and I have found several small communities and groups where we know our neighbors and are there for each other.

Recently one of my direct report’s mother became very ill. She was diagnosed with terminal cancer and the prognosis was poor. I convinced her to take intermittent leave and eased her mind so she could see that she needed to be home, with her mom, not at work. Several months later, she came to me and thanked me. She said that because of me, she got to enjoy her mother a little longer and this she would never forget.

I am a first-generation immigrant. My parents sacrificed a comfortable lifestyle in their home country to give my sisters and I a chance. A chance that changed our lives. Now that I have children of my own, I understand why my parents did this and furthermore, I now understand that no matter what I choose to do with this gift, my parents will be proud and it will be worth it.

What has been the most fulfilling moment in your career?

I had a client who was looking to expand into Omaha. We tried to find the perfect location but kept striking out. Finally, over a year later, we succeeded and he signed a lease. Seeing the excitement in him, his family, and the community is something I think about often.

What do you love about the Greater Omaha community?

I love that our community thrives on helping others and making a difference. I’ve lived in other cities and states, and none of them have come close to what we have in Omaha.

What is your advice for young professionals?

Be authentic to who you are and where you are in that moment. There will be times to chase the next thing and times to continue learning new skills, but the fun is had along the journey. I spent years chasing what I thought would make me happy because “I finally made it.” After achieving goals and moving on to the next, you realize that there is joy in the journey and living in the present will make you much more at peace with your life than trying to control the future. If you feel imposter syndrome because of inexperience, confidence, or skill, know that we all do at some point or another. This is all part of the journey that we are on.

What has been the most fulfilling moment in your career?

The greatest moments of my career have been watching team members or colleagues grow into their best selves. I have seen junior-level employees develop into strong leaders and the strongest leaders become the greatest version of themselves through pursuing their passion. The best people I have worked with possess all of the talent and skills already; they just need a strong leader to give them nudges along the way to make them the best version of themselves and live in accordance with their values.

What is your advice for young professionals?

Ask questions from people who know what they’re talking about. One of the best and worst things about running your own business is being able to make all of the decisions. However, you soon realize that you don’t know what you don’t know. While this blissful ignorance, in the beginning, makes it easier to sleep, it also makes a lot of other aspects of the business arduous and frustrating. I’m most proud of not being afraid to ask questions and let others know when I’m up against something I have no experience in. What’s important, however, is asking the right questions to the right people. Seek advice from seasoned professionals in their respective industries.

What has been the most fulfilling moment in your career?

While there have been so many “pinch me” moments, the most memorable was the day we moved into our 5,000-square-foot office. I couldn’t believe that something I had started in my basement had led us here. That day, and for weeks after, my husband and I spent hours walking every inch of that building dreaming and designing our future. It’s been almost two years since, and that empty building looks vastly different. Our team has helped us create an inviting and productive workspace as our business grows.

What is your advice for young professionals?

My advice for young professionals is to make yourself believe that failure is NOT an option. If you work hard and keep that in mind, you will not fail. Starting any business is the most difficult thing you will ever do but it’s also the most rewarding thing you’ll ever experience! I see a lot of young professionals getting paralyzed by over analyzing their market, competition or just negative self-talk in general. If you keep your head up and push through, what’s on the other side will be very fruitful!

When Curt Drew opened Fish Window Cleaning in Omaha in 2005, he had one vision in mind: to start something special. He aimed to create a great work environment for his team while providing excellent customer service.

A national franchise, Fish Window Cleaning offers commercial and residential window cleaning year-round. For Drew, hiring the right kind of people has always been more important than experience.

“We focus on finding individuals with a good work ethic who care, and then we teach them how to clean windows,” Drew said. “We build really good relationships with our team members. We have some employees who are with us for 10 years and some who might only be working with us for a few years. In those instances, we help them find their next job.”

While it can sometimes be a challenge to depend on businesses to call back or arrive on time, Drew said that’s never the case at Fish Window Cleaning, where customer service is always the prime focus. Because of this reputation in the community, Drew said the business has gained many referrals over the years.

In 2022, the business was named Franchise of the Year by Fish Window Cleaning, an award that is given to one franchise out of 250 locations across the country.

“It’s really a tribute to our team of people who are doing a great job,” Drew said.

Six years ago, Drew joined EO Nebraska to gain professional and personal development.

“I have had the opportunity to learn from other very successful people,” Drew said. “Two years ago, I became the president of the EO board. While this was out of my comfort zone and it was a challenge to balance the role and being a business owner, it really helped me grow as a leader and it was a really great experience.”

Drew, who also owns Radon Defense Midwest and National Radon Defense, looks forward to the future.

“I am really excited about our people and the growth opportunities for our team members,” Drew said. “I’m also very excited about continuing my involvement with EO.”

As 2022 winds down and we look ahead to 2023, we are pleased with the work our team has accomplished this year. On the member relations front, we grew our membership and have ambitious goals to reach highs for new and total members in 2023. Sponsorships remained strong and allowed us to grow our programs and offerings. With a transition to Livability for our community guide, a membership drive, and several new programs and events on the horizon for 2023, we know that we will continue to see steady growth in membership, program, and sponsorship revenue. The CB Chamber Workforce Development Program, an Initiative of the Iowa West Foundation, saw strong growth as well. We introduced the Leveraging Individual Female Talent (LIFT) Program in partnership with the Human Resources Association of the Midlands and Business Ethics Alliance to assist females throughout the MSA as they return to the workforce. We also worked with Lutheran Family Services to assist in integrating Afghan refugees to Council Bluffs, grew the highly successful Professional Development Series to three sessions, including one focused on DE&I, and will increase it to five in 2023, added several new GrowCB partner businesses, designated 20 organizations as Unbelievable Workplaces and hosted a new signature event to honor them, offered monthly lunch and learns, and expanded the offerings and resources of the Pottawattamie County Child Care Coalition. Advocacy is a strength of the CB Chamber, and we are proud to report we hosted our first DC Trip in over five years. We also hosted a State Legislative Reception in Des Moines for the first time in two years, offered Legislative Roundtables throughout the State Legislative Session, hosted two candidate events prior to the General Election, grew our Public Policy Committee, introduced the Southwest Iowa Advocacy Collaborative to empower Southwest Iowa and ensure we have a strong and meaningful advocacy presence at the state and federal level, supported Iowa’s historic state income tax reform, and provided consistent and timely updates throughout the Legislative Session with weekly video updates. Communication is so important, and we strive to keep our members more informed than any in the state through our growing advocacy program. Leadership programming is a staple of any
