EDITOR’S LETTER Bism Allah Al-Rahman Al-Raheem. In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah Wa Barakatu. May the peace and mercy of Allah Subhana Wa Ta‟ala (Glorious and Exaulted is He) Dear *MBM*Readers, I hope you are all in the best of health and increased Iman. I will start off by saying that I am very excited for February 1st. This issue really has some great content that MBM has come to known, alhamdulilah. Normally in my editor‟s letters I do a brief rundown of all the articles within the issue. For this issue, however, I decided to switch it up a bit. Instead of telling you about it, I want you to go read it. The issue encompasses some very inspiring Muslims. There are a handful of interviews that are of high value. I hope they will shed some light for you and bring you some insight, inshaAllah. The theme for the issue is *Moderation*, which is such an important concept in Islam. Our Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Do good deeds properly, sincerely and moderately. Always adopt a middle, moderate, regular course, whereby you will reach your target (of paradise)." - Sahih Al-Bukhari, Vol. 8, Hadith 470

EDITOR’S LETTER Do your research and study the Qur‟an and Ahadith. These treasures of knowledge will lead you to understand the type of balance we should stride for, both for the Dunya and al-Akhira. This month‟s Quran Challenge is Surat Al-Asr. Now, when I chose this Surah, I was aware that many of the readers probably already have this Surah memorized. Nonetheless, I chose it anyway. I think that it really does a good job in connecting with this theme of moderation and balance. So, for this month, if you already know the Qur‟an Challenge, then I have a new challenge for you. Find a Muslim (man, woman, adult, or child) who doesn‟t know Surat Al-Asr and teach it to them. As I said before, I do want to keep my letter short (so much for that!) Before I conclude, I would like to thank everyone that either reads or contribute to MBM. Without your contributions and readerships, this publication would not be possible. Also, let us remember that everything is only possible due to the will of Allah subhana‟wa‟ta3la. And Allah (SWT) knows best. Enjoy the issue. It‟s a good one! alhamdulilah :)

By Sister Nazeeha There are moments when life stares you right in the eye, and refuses to be ignored. I am just returning back home from a roller coaster of a week. And it is only fitting that I should return, and start writing on the topic of moderation. When was the last time you spent the day doing absolutely nothing? Okay let me rephrase that question. When was the last time you spent a “guilt free” day … doing absolutely nothing? I know! Smile, I can almost visualize your eyebrows making tiny wrinkles as you try and remember. Working ourselves to the point of exhaustion is not good for one’s health or for the sanity of our family. Unfortunately, the measure for success in today’s life is intertwined with financial wealth and the glitter that accompanies it. Who is the family the “Jones” that people try and compare themselves against? Now some of you may be thinking, this sounds great! There is nothing wrong with attaining success; the problem is devoting all one’s time in maintaining it. According to the Qur’an and the Sunnah, life should be lived in perfect balance or harmony. In other words, life is to be experienced permissibly and enjoyed in moderation. As Muslims we are each a marvelous creation of Allah (Subhana Wa Ta’ala). Personally I think (for what it’s worth, smile) we should try to show our appreciation by treating ourselves as the most important person we know. Taking care of our physical, emotional, and spiritual well being…is a form of worship. When we feel our best, we are able to give more to the ones we love. I have to admit it is quite difficult for me to spend time on myself. So trust me I am not pointing any fingers. I think as women it is our nature to put others first. I came upon these two beautiful hadiths that not only explain moderation, but give the reasoning for our need to maintain it in our daily lives insha Allah. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Do good deeds properly, sincerely and moderately. . .Always adopt a middle, moderate, regular course, whereby you will reach your target (of paradise)." - Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 8, Hadith 470

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "The good deeds of any person will not make him enter Paradise (i.e., no one enters paradise only through his good deeds)." The Prophet's companions asked: "Not even you?" The Prophet replied: "Not even myself, unless God bestows His favor and mercy on me. So be moderate in your religious deeds and do what is within your ability. None of you should wish for death, for if he is a doer of good, he may increase his good deeds, and if he is an evil doer, he may repent to God." - Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 7, Hadith 577 Alhamdulillah, the mercy that we receive from Allah (swt) never ceases to touch my heart. There is nothing that should ever cause excess in our life. So all the responsibilities we carry as women (raising families, working, school)… can no longer be used as an excuse. When we submit to the will of Allah (swt) we don’t always see or understand the benefits of what is required from us. In these moments, we rely upon our Iman (faith) that we are doing what is best. But, true sincerity in our devotion will earn us the best of rewards for the Hereafter. So my dear sisters, let’s relieve our burden of excess and do the best that we can in moderation. Take a few moments to check on another sister, let her know that she matters and is important.

Sincerely,

There will never be any advice or guidance more perfect that what is contained in the Qur’an and from the Sunnah. However, there is a quote from American author Mark Twain who said “Moderation in all things, including moderation.”

I don’t know what you are going to do, but I am going to go and have a big glass of milk and some cookies…in moderation of course! (Wink)

“Only Allah can make Muslims.”

“Islam has brought peace and tranquility into my life.” What was your life like before Islam? Before Islam, my life was filled with nonstop drama. I grew up in the streets of NYC in a neighborhood infested with crime, drugs, and violence. I spend a large percentage of my life running the streets of NYC, getting myself into all sorts of trouble. When I entered the music business, I thought it would be an escape from this repetitive life of sin. Unfortunately it landed me in an even more intensified cycle of sin that consisted of the same elements of my neighborhood, but multiplied by 10. What has Islam given you that you were unable to attain from your fame and success in the music industry? Islam has brought peace and tranquility into my life. Islam has enabled me to see my true purpose in life, and that's to worship the One True God Allah subhanahu wa ta a'laa. I spent many years in a business designed to lead you astray from this methodology. Now that I'm a Muslim, Insha'Allah bi‟ithnillah I plan on spending the rest of my life seeking knowledge

and doing good deeds for the sake of Allah's pleasure. Sometimes, individuals who are searching for the truth know that Islam is for them in their hearts. Yet they are afraid to officially convert for many different reasons. What advice would you give these individuals that might help them take the action that will best benefit them? Be patient. As Muslims we are not evangelist. Only Allah can make Muslims. So when someone has Islam on their heart an there hesitant, be patient. If you've conveyed the truth to them, then you've done your part. From that point, make du'a and trust in Allah azza wajjal to do the rest. And Allah knows best.

What advice can you give a convert who is dealing with difficulties of their family/friends who are not Muslim? ———————————————–— He/She must be patient with their family. Most people who revert and have family members who don't completely agree with Islam must be very patient.

We know that Salat (prayer) is such an important part of our Deen and that it is our connection to our Creator. What advice can you give to Muslim sisters who believe Islam is the truth but are not praying? ———————————————–—

This is because as Muslims we are commanded to not severe the ties of kinship.

Marriage is sometimes a stressful situation for both our young Muslim sisters and brothers. Do you have any tips for young Muslim adults who are having difficulties with this? ———————————————— Marriage is one of the most beautiful things in Islam, and one of the greatest protections from the fitna of this dunya. The Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam said:

So my advice would be when you‟re practicing your Deen, spend most of your time practicing in the Masjid. And when you are around your family, strive to show them the good manners and characteristics of the Muslim and abstain from actions that would lead them to frown upon Islam. And Allah knows best. I understand that you spend a large majority of your time giving Dawah. Do you have any tips for a Muslim who wants to get involved in their Ummah? ————————————————

First and foremost, it would be best to study tawheed—because calling the people to Islam requires an understanding of tawheed. This was the dawah of the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa salam and his Companions radiyallahu anhum (salaf as sahlih). Nowadays, you have Muslims using the wrong methodology to giving dawah. As Muslims we do not need to seduce anyone, or call the people to Islam without giving them a firm understanding of what it is we are calling them to. Because without calling the people to what is correct, could lead to a person having doubts or even worst apostate and leave the fold of Islam. And we seek refuge with Allah from this.

MBM

Fear Allah.

"O you young men! Those among you who have the means and the ability should marry, because it restrains the eyes (from evil glances) and preserves the private parts (from immorality). And whoever is unable to do so, should fast because it is a protection for him" And he sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam said: "If one whose religion and character pleases you proposes to you, then marry him. If you do not do so, it will be a cause of trial in the land and great corruption" And he sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam said: "Marry productive, loving women, because I will have the largest number of followers on the Day of Resurrection." “Fear Allah. And hang with sisters that fear Allah.” As we know, Islam liberates women by seeing them as a intellectual human being. Unfortunately, our society markets a very provocative standard for women and some of our Muslim sisters are giving in to temptations of this Dunya. How would you address this issue in order to motivate our Muslim sisters to stay away from these temptations? ————————————————— Fear Allah. And hang with sisters that fear Allah. Because the Muslim women are the greatest women to walk this earth (Maryam, Khadija, Fatima, Asma, Aisha, [the list goes on] may Allah be pleased with them all). Beyonce, Alicia Keys, and Rihanna ain‟t nothing compared to the Mothers of the Believers. So strive to be like the best and not like the rest. And the truth is with Allah.

MBM

What do you think is the biggest misconception about Islam? How would you go about clearing that up? ————————————————— The biggest misconception about Islam is the media perception of the Muslim. Those who control the media have made a business out of exposing the world‟s dirty laundry. For a religion of peace, it really tarnishes the credibility of Islam when they expose the acts of Muslims who do things that are not in accordance to the religion of Islam. The only way I would be able to contribute to cleaning it up.....is making du'a and seeking refuge in Allah subhanahu wa ta a'laa. Allahu Akbar!

The Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam said: "Stick to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly-guided Khaleefahs that (come) after me. Hold onto it and bite onto it with your molar teeth. And beware of newly invented matters, for indeed every newly-invented matter is an innovation and every innovation is a misguidance."

Image Credit: Loon2Amir.com In my own personal reading and research, I have noticed a common trend that some individuals feel Islam can be reinterpreted and molded to ways to fit their needs. How can we address this issue and emphasize the importance of staying in line with the Qur'an and Hadiths? ————————————————— Fear Allah! There is only one sunnah. And that is the sunnah of the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam, his Companions radiyallahu anhum, and the Tabi'een. These were the best of the people.

MBM

How does Islam keep you inspired? ————————————————— Constantly reading, listening to lectures (CD's, Paltalk, Masjids), surrounding myself around brothers who fear Allah, follow what‟s correct, and striving to return to Allah with good deeds that outweigh my bad deeds. Ameen Thank you so much Brother Amir. Do you have any final comments for my readers? Jazakallah khair sister for this opportunity. May Allah grant you taufiq. Barakallahu feeki JazkAllah khair brother Amir. Thank you so much. I truly believe that your interview will motivate and enlighten many readers (Muslim and non-Muslim). The great concept of haya‟ or modesty should be promoted. Haya can sometimes be abused as a justification for not doing something or giving up an obligatory act. Haya or modesty is a great Islamic concept that leads to goodness and keeps a Muslim away from doing a bad or indecent act when its level is maximized. Iman and haya‟ are linked. When there is Iman, there is haya‟, and vice versa. All of us are born with natural haya‟.

Interview with Author Dania Alkhouli Tell us about your book "91 at 19". *Well, 91 at 19 is a book of pure poetry. As the title states, it contains 91 of my favorite poems, all that I wrote up until the age of 19. So I feel that this is just my startup, a step out there for poetry in the female Muslim world. It ranges in topic, but a majority revolves around the genre of relationships.*

the water brought in the middle of the hot night was just this ironic beauty and completely refreshing and along came the poem - instead of the homework assignment.*

What else do you do besides writing awesome poems? *As a hobby, I do love dancing - as a workout, a stress reIs there anything about you that can help readers liever, and as a chance to just let all the worries go. So far I have been told Photos courtesy of Dania Alkhouli that readers do feel a sense of connection with the poem because of its depth - hopefully it continues to do so. * What inspires your poems? *Honestly, I find inspiration in everything. From the way a raindrop splashed on my windshield to a word someone says unconsciously. It all comes at me in a different way than I feel the world sees it and so somehow I find it beautiful or inspiration and I'm immediately caught in capturing the moment. Life is literally a drawing board - or really a writing board for me.* MashaAllah, Night Rain is such a lovely piece of work. Can you share more of an insider's view of it? *It's actually a funny story because although this poem came out beyond deep, it was inspired by sprinklers one summer night. I was stuck doing homework and it was such a hot night, so I had the windows open. Around 11pm, the sprinklers in our backyard came on and so the sounds and smells

Would you consider your poems to reflect you individually or something larger? If so, what? *Since I never imagined I would be published, when I started writing poetry, it was pretty much a reflection of myself - a way for me to honestly express how I feel without holding back (because my poetry is not censored – every emotion is out there). There are times however, when I encounter a situation larger than just me, and it brings about a poem. For example war or death or social problems - these all have inspired poems that are in my book 91 at 19. I even remember the way gossiping got to me and so I wrote a few poems about that. * Where can readers find more out about your book and purchase it? *My book is currently available with me and so I have been doing the marketing and selling for it. So I am open to anyone contacting me if they are interested in purchasing the book. It is also available at Jarir's Bookstore in Garden Grove, CA. *

Secrets of the Sky White skies, gray clouds, rain drops falling in bars. The rain falls across my window just like shooting stars. I watch one drop after another decorate the glass. As each drop lands another moment will continue to pass. I wonder if every rain drop carries a secret from the sky. And if, when it falls, the secret will there forever lie. Is it a message we were meant to catch? But instead it was destined on the ground to hatch? Did we then miss out on a chance to know the unknown? Or was it meant to be that this is another thing to postpone? It’s been said that if we only knew what was not meant for us to know, we would have gained an advantage that our minds could not even imagine, nor show. What if the raindrops bring this down to us? And share the secrets with those they trust? So catch the rain, don’t let yourself miss a drop. It is a blessing that at one point will stop. It may carry your secret, your wish, your dream too. And maybe by catching it, it will all come true.

Deep within the midnight darkness the drops of wetness glisten in finesse. A falsified rain sprinkles this dew, refreshing the night's heat, bringing it anew. Last intake of the freshest breath leaves a farewell to the lovely night's death. A heart so enlightened by the nature's touch. Never letting go of this everlasting clutch.

What is QuranClub? QuranClub is a collaborative Islamic blog. We are a group of Muslim bloggers who love Allah, and we help our readers improve their relationship with Him. How was the name of QuranClub inspired? What kind of topics does QuranClub tackle? QuranClub was just a Quran reading club at the beginning. We used to read the Quran and post our reading progress on the blog to motivate each other to read more. Later, we decided we could do more than that, and started covering a wide range of topics. We post anything that in some way increases the Islamic knowledge of our readers, inspires them, or helps them live a better life.

benefit our readers, we just have to share it! QuranClub is just the platform that we use to share stuff. At QuranClub, there are no writing obligations or deadlines--we only write when we are inspired. I think this helps keep the quality of the articles high, since we only post things worth posting.

Sakina Al-Amin's answer to "What motivates QuranClub writers?" "Living daily life while being God Conscious is all the inspiration we need. Us QuranClub authors encounter problems in our personal lives and we try to find a way to look at the issue from an Islamic perspective. Gulan's answer: "My inspiration for every post I write for QuranClub is that other people may benefit from my words. I may put a smile upon one person's face and soul and that would be enough for me. Secondly, QuranClub is truly a daily dose of faith. Every post is inspiring, beautifully written, and soulfully felt." How can individuals get involved with QuranClub? As I mentioned in my answer to question four, usually I'm the one who finds authors. However, I'd welcome anyone who is a good writer and who loves Islam to join our team.

Does QuranClub have any food for thought on the topic of Moderation, from an Islamic viewpoint? Moderation means having knowledge of the Quran and Sunnah and following them to the best of our ability, while keeping in mind that Allah doesn't want to cause us pain, and that we are only responsible for what is in the scope of our abilities. We have to be forgiving of ours and other people's shortcomings, and we have to know that we can't become perfect Muslims in a day or two.

What plans does QuranClub have for the future, inshaAllah? Our biggest future goal is to keep the blog alive and to add fresh content to it every day. We have seen dozens of Islamic blogs start up and die after a few months. InshAllah, we will be able to continue our work, like we have done in the past seven months. In the future, we may publish our best posts as a book, inshAllah. But, for now we'd like to keep doing what we do best. This issue's theme is "Moderation".

Rejecting Racism on the Radio In the name of God, compassionate & merciful ‫َّح ِين‬ ِ ‫من الر‬ ِ ْ‫بِس ِْن هللاِ الرَّح‬ Peace be with you ‫السالم عليكن‬ Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakhatuh! So many people apparently are still victims of this dark prejudice and many others openly practice it. It’s shocking to know how much racism still occurs today -TODAY- and how much hate there is in regards to race, caste, sects, genders and culture etc. I just thought I’d share with you a verse from the Qur’an and some Ahadith (prophetic sayings) about equality and intentions that were mentioned during my show: 'O mankind! I know we don't all use that word; of 'righteousness' means to be "Morally upright; without guilt or sin" so your actions are justifiable. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) declared: "O people! You are all to Adam and Adam was made of dust. No Arab is to be preferred over a non-Arab except by virtue of his piety." In another hadith, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah does not look at your images or your colors but He looks at your hearts (intentions) and your deeds. Creatures are the dependants of Allah and the closest among them to Allah are indeed the most useful to His dependants." (mentioned in his farewell/hajj sermon). My message to Muslimness readers is to forget our differences, we were made to be different. Let’s concentrate on our similarities instead. Allah bless you , remember the Muslimness motto of respect and keep me, Crescent Radio team from Rochdale UK, and my family in your duas. Take care. Wa alaikum us salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.,

THE EFFECTS OF CULTURE, RACISM, AND DISUNITY IN MUSLIM COMMUNITIES BY RAABIA AHMAD “Asalamualaikum” I say, but am once again greeted by silence, as two Muslim sisters pass me by without returning the greeting. I shrug my shoulders and continue my trek through the mall. This is not the first time that I have been snubbed by a Muslim of another race or culture and sadly it will not be the last. Racism is something that is becoming all too familiar in our communities. There is not a town country or city that the concept of Islam has not reached, and because of this the population of Muslims is one of many different races, ethnicities and cultures. Although we all come from different backgrounds the practice of this perfect religion is the same for all of us. Islam is a way of life and we are all equal in the sight of Allah (SWT). The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said in his Last Sermon "O people! Your God is one and your forefather (Adam) is one. An Arab is not better than a nonArab and a non-Arab is not better than an Arab, and a red (i.e. white tinged with red) person is not better than a black person and a black person is not better than a red person, except in piety".

or sister in Islam with pride or arrogance or to think you are better because of racial background is totally against the moral principles of Islam. Would you choose to follow in the steps of Shaitan who in his pride and arrogance refused to bow down to Adam? This is seen in the following Ayah, “And we created you (humans), then fashioned you, then told the angels: Fall ye prostrate before Adam! And they fell prostrate, all save Iblis, who was not of those who made prostration. He (Allah) said: "What hindered thee that thou didst not fall prostrate when I bade thee?" (Iblis) said: "I am better than him. Thou created me of fire while him Thou didst create of mud". Qur'an Surah Al‟Araf 11-12. This ayah is a prime example of why we should stay away from the poisons of pride and arrogance. In this case the Shaitan was expelled because of them. Instead of seeking humility towards Allah he let his prejudices overcome him causing him to disobey his lord.

The Islamic community is often plagued by problems that come from ingrained cultural practices and beliefs being mixed with Islam. Some Muslims There is such a grandeur message that can be find it difficult to differentiate between their between taken from this statement. The Prophet SAW is letting their customs and Islam, believing they are one and us know that color does not separate one human be- the same. They might even go as far as to practice ing from another, and that the only separation is in cultural beliefs over the laws of Islam and this is righteousness. To look down on your brother Haram.

Every person is different in the way they think and interpret things. Islam is a religion that has no room for racism and or prejudices; it unites people from all races cultures and ethnic backgrounds. In a country that is all too familiar with discrimination, the beauty of Islam has made it a sin to hate one another because of something as insignificant as skin color.

So why is it that some Muslims continue to hate one another? Why we are still divided within our own communities?

same racial background you could have a hard time finding a mate. The amount of cases like this are becoming more and more evident in our communities and it‟s very sad. If we allow this sickness of intolerance to infiltrate our communities, to affect what Masjid‟s we go to, who we hang out with, who we marry, who we allow our children to marry we will only suffer. I have heard so many sad stories of Muslims who were extremely hurt when they found a potential mate but were not allowed to marry because that person was of another ethnic group. In some cases there are Muslims still practicing arranged marriages! The prophet in his infinite wisdom said the following, "If somebody comes to you and you are pleased with his character and religion then marry him. If you do not, there will be discord on earth and widespread corruption." Ibn Majah 1967. See Slsilah as-Saheehah.

If one were to take a look at the state of the Muslim Ummah they would see one of division, we are separated into different groups, stunting our ability to grow because we refuse to reach out to each other. More and more places of worship are being built with I pray that Allah allows us to unite little hope of unity in the ones that already exist. We and to love one another for his sake refind every reason to disassociate with each other from reasons that range from ethnic background to gardless of race, culture, or the color of religious practice. our skin. There are some instances where attending a Masjid frequented mostly by one nationality of people can be a problem. At these Masjids you can pray, attend functions, and essentially think you are a part of the community; that is until it comes to marrying someone from their Masjid. If you are not of the

―My New Found Hobby‖ Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim Assalamu alyakum to all my lovely ladies out there! I found a hobby and thought I‟d share it with everyone. This hobby fills me with love, happiness, hope, fear, respect, knowledge, wisdom, and clarity. And since I love this Muslimah family so dearly, I thought it appropriate to let you all know about it so you could begin to love it. Every Sunday (al-ahad in Arabic) me and two of my favorite Muslimahs refresh our minds and think of the most important thing in life, our Deen. We are so busy during most of the week that even though we pray five (5) times a day, we forget about important things in our Deen like remembrance of death, adab of speech, how to relate with people, especially our kith and kin, how to remember Allah (dhikr) in other ways apart from Salat, how best to serve Allah, for that is the purpose for which we were all created, and how to simply appreciate Allah‟s blessings on us. This started with just a thought. I had been thinking about it for a long time now and the right time just didn‟t present itself. So anyway, I sent a SMS to my friend, sister Nafisah, telling her how I thought it would be great to start a sisters‟ book club, a club where all that will be read, said and done would be in the name of Allah. The plan was that we would pick Islamic literature, read it, analyze it, digest it and relate it to our situation. And her reply: “sweet!! The idea has been in me for a long time now, but no one with that kind of like mind. We will discuss it over the weekend InshaAllah…” I was elated when I got the message, it was a Wednesday (al-arbi‟a) and I just couldn‟t wait for

MBM

the week to pass by… Thursday (al-khamis) came and I was already thinking of ideas...books we could start with, du‟as we could learn, life stories we could share, girl talk we could all relate with… the idea consumed me so much I couldn‟t imagine why it hadn‟t come to me sooner. I thought of the benefits, then I cautioned myself, and thanked Allah for giving me the wisdom to suggest it, and for making my sister Naf agree and be pleased with the idea. Then came the Sunday I had been eagerly waiting for, the day we were to start the sisters‟ book club aka „cercle de sœurs‟. We started in the name of Allah the Beneficent the Merciful, prayed for Allah‟s guidance and asked Him to forgive us and bless us in what we were about to begin. As I live in the hostel and it would be a bit inappropriate to start it in my room, sister Naf suggested we have it at her place, which is very conducive place outside school. I had no problem with this because, then, it would be me, her and her roommate, the lovely sister Rahmatu. From the first day my heart was filled with love, overwhelmed with a deep passion for my Deen. I couldn‟t imagine a life without Allah‟s love and blessings. It was at that moment I realized that life without fear of Allah and faith in Him is a worthless one. Words fail to articulate the intensity of that very feeling. The message: Allah loves us more than we can ever imagine.

On this note, I would like to define sisterhood from what I have learnt from these few days. Sisterhood is unity Sisterhood is iman (faith in Allah) Sisterhood is trust Sisterhood fear of Allah Sisterhood is companionship Sisterhood is a bond A bond we should never cut loose, as Allah (Azza wa jal) said, in Al-„Imran 3:103 “Hold fast to rope of Allah all together, and do not separate. Remember Allah‟s blessings to you when you were enemies and He joined your hearts together so that you became brothers by His blessing.” InshaAllah, our sister‟s book club will grow wider, until it reaches sisters across the globe. We are already planning to make it accessible, first to Muslimahs in the school, and then across Nigeria and then on the net, to Muslimahs all over. Allah gave us the gift of imagination, and when He blesses us with ability to deliver, Subhannallah! I implore all the ladies in the house to make a change. If you have the knowledge, get a group of sisters together, educate them on their Deen, share everything you have, try to solve their problems, just be there for people, for our Rasoul (S.A.W) said, Whoever relieves a Muslim of an ordeal of this world, Allah will relieve him of an ordeal of the Day of Resurrection; whoever makes it easy for the one in distress (i.e ., he who is indebted to him while being unable to repay), Allah will make it easy for him in this

MBM

worldly life and the Hereafter; and whoever conceals the faults of a Muslim, Allah will conceal him of his faults in this worldly life and the Hereafter. Verily, Allah aids His servant as he comes to the aid of his brother.” (On the authority of Abu Hurairah, related by Muslim) So you see sisters, if we share what we have and what we know, Allah rewards us. May Allah rewards our good deeds, and forgive us our sins. May Allah keep the Muslim Ummah together in faith. AMEEN.

French Onion Soup (Soup à l‟Oignon) It may sound cliché, but this recipe is inspired by Julia Child‟s original version in her book Mastering the Art of French Cooking. Long before she regained popularity in the last year or so, I became a huge fan—and student—of this great culinary legend. The original soup is made with wine, but I‟ve made it halal by using a very good quality grape juice instead. C‟est bon! Serves 2-4 (2 large bowls or 4 cups) Ingredients -2 Tb. unsalted butter -½ Tb. olive oil -2 large yellow onions -1 Tb. all-purpose flour -1 tsp. salt -4 Tb. real grape juice, not from concentrate -½ tsp. raw cane sugar -2 cups water or beef consommé -½ loaf of French bread (baguette) -Gruyère cheese

French Onion Soup (Soup à l‟Oignon) ..continued.. Directions 1. Heat the butter in a large Dutch oven over medium heat. When butter begins to froth, add the olive oil. 2. When the oil and butter have warmed, add the onions. Sautè for 5-10 minutes, or until all of the onions have browned and softened very well. 3. Add the flour and stir thoroughly. Add the salt, grape juice and sugar. Continue to sauté onions for an additional 3-5 minutes, to continue to brown very well but not burn. 4. Add the water or beef consommé. Reduce heat to low and simmer fro 15-20 minutes. 5. Cut four semi-thick pieces of French bread, then cut each of those pieces into quarters, making chunks or squares of bread. 6. Grate 1 cup of the Gruyère cheese. 7. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. For two large bowls of soup, divide the bread and cheese in half and place the bread on parchment paper first, then the grated cheese on top. For four cups of soup, divide the bread and cheese into fours and do the same thing. 8. Using the high setting on the oven‟s broiler, place the baking sheet directly under the flame and broil for 45 seconds-1 minute. Remove from oven immediately. 9.Ladle soup into bowls and top each bowl with one bread-cheese mixture. The bread-cheese mixture should come off very easily in one piece by sliding a knife or spatula directly underneath it. 10. Serve soup as soon as possible and while it‟s still nice and hot. Bismillah and Bon Appetit!

Chapter 4 By Meena Ansari Central Park, Friday, 9 AM So the day finally came. Daniela, Emma and Suhana had reached there on time. To their surprise, there were not that many people there. After all, Jerusalem was not really a place to "vacation". Therefore, not a lot of students bothered. Daniela had already known about this congregation long back. The organizers were some of her father‟s best friends, who had promised her, that even if her name did not come out, they would still reserve a place for her. However, Daniela being a girl of principles, insisted that she should be considered as a regular person and her name should be drawn out. Only then would she accept the lottery prize. This lottery was not a big deal for her. Daniela could have easily gotten a first class air ticket and flew to Israel. But, she wanted to experience this journey with the two other people. She expected them to have as much passion about their individual religion as her, whether they were Jewish or not. "Okay everyone! Let‟s settle down now! Please help yourselves with some refreshments! The lottery will start in five minutes!" Daniela decided to get a drink. She began walking towards the refreshments table and all of a sudden, bumped hard into two other girls. Daniela: "Oh my God! I am so sorry ladies!" Emma: "It‟s ok" Suhana: "Oh no problem" Emma went on her way to find Eddie, who got lost somewhere after they arrived at the congregation together.

Suhana went towards Naina. Suhana: "Partner, I am dead nervous, I was shaking while filling the form, I don‟t know why, but I really hope my name comes out, I feel like Jerusalem is literally calling my name!" Naina: "Chill yaar! I am sure your name will come out! For the time being, listen to some Bollywood Music!!" Bollywood is India‟s biggest movie Industry. Suhana loved Bollywood movies and Music. Most of them were romantic and had love stories similar to Suhana‟s dream world. Listening to Bollywood Music made her forget all her sadness and worries. Suhana: "Yeah, I‟ll do that" Meanwhile, Emma suddenly found Eddie. Emma: "Ed! Where were you? I got so worried! Eddie: "Em, I was just around the corner talking to some friends" Emma: "Well you should have told me at least!" Eddie: "Calm down buddy!" Eddie gave Emma a warm hug. Emma: "Ed, I am really worried, this has been my life-long dream, to go to Jerusalem, the birthplace of Jesus (Peace be upon him) and research the roots of my religion." Eddie: "Em, you will win, Have faith, God loves you, you do so many things for our Church, volunteer to clean it, preach little kids, I am sure you will get what you want" Emma: "I really hope so Ed, I really hope so…" "Okay Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls! The time is here! Get your fingers crossed and see what‟s in store for you!"

Suhana, who was listening to her Ipod, took off her earplugs. Suhana: "Huh?" Naina: "Uff! Partner! Its you!!! Your name is called! Get up there yaar!!" Suhana‟s heart suddenly began to beat faster; she couldn‟t believe what Naina said. Naina: "Go!! And give me this!!" Naina snatched the Ipod from Suhana. Suhana was in a shock. She slowly walked towards the stage; all eyes were fixed on her. "Congratulations Ms. Suhana," said the announcer with a big smile and handed her an envelope. Suhana: "Thank You, Thank you so much" "Alright, next lucky winner is… Ms. Daniela Spielberg!!" Daniela got up as soon as she heard her name. She went up to the stage, said her thank you, and greeted Suhana as well. Daniela: "Congrats Suhana!" Suhana: "Thank you Daniela, Same to you"

Get up there! Slowly, Emma turned around and looked at the crowd that was staring at her. Eddie helped Emma up to the stage. When Emma reached the stage, the announcer said: "Yes Madam‟ its most certainly is you! Congratulations!" Emma: "I still can‟t believe this, but Thank you, Thank you from the bottom of my heart" The man handed Emma the envelope that contained the prize, which were the air and railway tickets" Emma walked towards Daniela and Suhana. Emma (smiles): "Well, we meet again! Congratulations Ladies!" Daniela (smiles): "I guess destiny wanted us to meet" Suhana (smiles): "Yes, it was all destined" Daniela: "Well, as you know my name is Daniela. Daniela Spielberg. Mr. Roberts: "Hello Ladies" Daniela, Emma and Suhana turned around; Daniela was in for a pleasant surprise. Daniela: "Mr. Roberts? What a pleasant surprise!" Mr. Roberts: "It sure is a very pleasant surprise isn‟t it? You may be guessing what I am doing here, so before you even ask I will tell you. Daniela, when I met you at your Dad‟s party that day in New Haven, I saw the dedication and passion in your eyes to travel to Jerusalem, and from what I had heard from others about you, I knew that most likely you would not want to travel this journey alone. Therefore, I organized this congregation for this lottery as fast as I could; I spread the word around, and even though it was suppose to be a secret, I let the secret out that the ultimate city would be Jerusalem, the reason I did this, was because I knew for sure, that the people who would come to apply for this lottery to travel to Jerusalem, which is a very holy city, would also be as curious to learn the roots of religion as you And then of course, once I saw that it was Emma and Suhana, that were going to go along with you, I was even more glad, because I have heard about Emma‟s contributions to her Church and Suhana‟s writing stories" Daniela: "Mr. Roberts, how will I ever be able to repay this favor of yours?" Mr. Roberts: "You can and you will, by going to Jerusalem with Emma and Suhana, and researching your religions as much as possible and who knows you might come up with a unique message…" Emma: "Thank you so much Sir, I am very happy that my contributions to my Church have been appreciated by God and this world"

56

Directions 1. Bring a pot of salted water to a boil. Cook penne according to package directions. 2. Melt butter over medium heat. Add flour and stir for one minute. Add half-and-half and stir until thickened, around 6 minutes. Lower heat; add a little bit of cajun seasoning, cayenne pepper, salt and pepper and stir well. 3. Pound chicken to 1/2-inch thickness (and cut into bite size pieces). Add salt, pepper, Cajun seasoning, and cayenne pepper. Warm oil in a nonstick skillet over mediumhigh heat. Add chicken and cook, 6-8 minutes. Add tomatoes near the end, to soften. 4. Add the chicken and tomatoes into the half and half mixture and mix well. Add cooked penne into it as well, mixing and tossing well. Add shredded parmesan cheese and mozzarella cheese and mix well. 5. Add extra Cajun seasoning if need be (depending on taste buds).

Tips **I add jalapenos sometimes to the chicken and tomatoes mixture. * You may need to add more half and half; it tastes better creamier (based on preference) . ** Instead of using parmesan cheese and mozzarella cheese, I have tried using the combination of parmesan cheese and Monterey jack cheese as well (so either one of those will be fine).

Taking Care Of Your Mouth And Teeth By Marwa Taking proper care of your mouth and teeth is one of the first steps to achieve optimum health. Brushing Careful and frequent brushing with a toothbrush helps prevent build-up of plaque on the teeth. The bacteria that metabolizes carbohydrates from our meals and snacks excrete acid which demineralizes tooth enamel, eventually leading to tooth decay and toothache if acid episodes are frequent. Calculus (dental) or tartar buildup on teeth which is usually opposite salivary ducts occur because of calcium deposits in resident plaque. Frequent brushing and swishing saliva around helps prevent these deposits. Cavities can be costly, in terms of the monetary cost to drill out the cavities and insert dental fillings, and in terms of the tissue already damaged. Fluoride- containing, or anti-plaque (tartar control) toothpastes may be recommended by your dentist. Early toothbrushing utilized powdered pumice stone as a polishing agent. Later, flavored powders were mixed with the powered pumice to develop a more tasty toothpowder. In the late 1920's, powdered pumice was mixed with a flavored paste to make toothpaste, with no added treatment agents as found in toothpastes today. Flossing In addition to brushing, the use of dental floss too may help to prevent build-up of plaque bacteria on the teeth. Almost all cavities occur where food is trapped between teeth and inside deep pits and fissures in grooves on chewing surfaces, where the brush, toothpaste, mouthwash, saliva, and chewing gum cannot reach. Special appliances or tools may be recommended to supplement (but not to replace) toothbrushing and flossing. These include special toothpicks, oral irrigators, or other devices. Initially. electric toothbrushes were only recommended for persons who have problems with strength or dexterity of their hands, but many dentists are now recommending them to many other patients to improve their home dental care. Scrubbing Unlike tooth brushing, scrubbing can also be done using a twig. With this approach, no brush is used but the twig itself is used to clean the teeth. Plant sap present within the twig make the use of additional tooth paste unneeded. In many parts of the world Teeth cleaning twigs are used. In the Muslim world the miswak or siwak is made from twigs or roots that are alleged to have an antiseptic effect when applied as a toothbrush.

Although not mentioned in the Qur'an, use of the miswak is frequently advocated in the hadith (the traditions relating to the life of Muhammad). Situations where the miswak is recommended to be used include, before religious practice, before entering one's house, before and after going on a journey, on Fridays , before sleeping and after waking up, when experiencing hunger or thirst and before entering any good gathering. In addition to strengthening the gums, preventing tooth decay and eliminating toothaches, the miswak is also said to halt further increase in decay that has already set in. Furthermore, it is claimed to create a fragrance in the mouth, eliminate bad breath, improve the sense of taste and cause the teeth to glow and shine. Supposed benefits not related to the teeth and gums include sharpening memory, curing headaches, creating a glow on the face of the one who continually uses it, strengthening the eyesight, assisting in digestion and clearing the voice. None of these claims, however, have been researched scientifically. From Sahih al-Bukhari: Narrated Abu Hurairah: The Prophet said, "If somebody eats or drinks forgetfully then he should complete his fast, for what he has eaten or drunk, has been given to him by God." Narrated 'Amir bin Rabi'a, "I saw the Prophet cleaning his teeth with Siwak while he was fasting so many times as I can't count." And narrated Abu Huraira, "The Prophet said, 'But for my fear that it would be hard for my followers, I would have ordered them to clean their teeth with Siwak on every performance of ablution." The same is narrated by Jabir and Zaid bin Khalid from the Prophet who did not differentiate between a fasting and a nonfasting person in this respect (using Siwak). Aisha said, "The Prophet said, "It (i.e. Siwak) is a purification for the mouth and it is a way of seeking God's pleasures." Ata' and Qatada said, "There is no harm in swallowing the resultant saliva." Narrated Abu Burda: My father said, "I came to the Prophet and saw him carrying a Siwak in his hand and cleansing his teeth, saying, 'U' U'," as if he was retching while the Siwak was in his mouth." From Sahih Muslim 'Abd al-Rahman son of Abu Sa`id al-Khudri reported on the authority of his father that the Messenger of God said: Bathing on Friday for every adult, using of Miswak and applying some perfume, that is available -these are essential. So far as the perfume is concerned, it may be that used by a lady.
