From the Bism Allah Al-Rahman Al-Raheem. In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah Wa Barakatu. May the peace & mercy of Allah Subhana Wa Ta‘ala (Glorious & Exaulted is He) Dear MBM Readers, InshaAllah, I hope you are all in the best of health and increased Iman. This issue‘s theme is desires. A big part of Islam is mastering one‘s desires in the way we were created to do so. Unfortunately, main stream society is on a whole different page, as society is rapidly ―liberating‖ us by allowing us to indulge in our desires, no matter what they are. A few years ago, when I was at the prime of my teenage years, I used to think that Islam was no fun. Truth is, many Muslim teenagers see Islam this way, especially when they are bombarded with a hedonistic society around them. Looking back, I wonder how I ever even carried that mindset. I have realized how Islam is the perfect way to live my life, alhamdulilah. Islam makes me realize that all those desires we so call crave for are man-made. Think about it. Half of the things we tend to desire do not even come from our own internal desires. Rather, they come from our environments and what is marketed to us as being ―what we want‖. Islam does not oppress women. Islam liberates women. Ask a woman who dresses revealing and provocative who she is dressing for. She may tell you that it is for herself, but it is not. We have been molded in a way to believe this. But it is not.

4

Editor If a woman dressed this way solely for herself, why is it that the majority of women cannot even be recognized if you were to see how ―dressed down‖ they are when at home. Islam encourages the woman to do the opposite. To dress conservatively in public and then to glamour herself for her own pleasure as well as her husband‘s. Some feminists will immediately stand up to this and say it is ridiculous. Then they will follow it up by explaining this is backwards and that a women‘s purpose is not to glamour herself for her husband and that we are not meant for that. I never said that was a women‘s purpose, as the purpose of a women is much deeper. However, there is nothing wrong with this. If everyone (male and female) were more concerned with pleasing their spouses rather than the entire public world, we would face many less problems as a society. Moreover, is it not more ridiculous when women glamour and demoralize themselves for random strangers and the whole world to see? The mainstream evolution of women‘s rights? Truth be told, society has not gotten that far. Women are still subjected the way they have always been. I‘d like to conclude by mentioning that desires are not bad. They are actually very good and they are what keep us motivated. However the things in which we choose to desire can make us or break us. Join MBM in this issue to learn the Islamic take on desires and what the teachings of the Qur‘an and Ahadith say on this topic. Enjoy the issue.

School of Fish

W

hen I graduated high school, I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my life. I wanted to go to college and major in education. I wanted to become a teacher and solely focus on my academics. I did not have time for boys or to even think about marriage. At the end of my first semester of college, I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my life. I wanted to explore my new found love for science and become a dentist. I had no time to think about boys or marriage. I began practicing hijab my

sophomore year of college, and I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my life. I had transferred to a new university full of many new opportunities and friends. I wanted to make a difference in the world as a Muslim. I wanted to still work with teeth but as an orthodontist. I had no time or interest in men or marriage. By my senior year of college, I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my life. I wanted to get married and have a family of my own. I graduated college with a degree in my hand and a ring on my finger. 6

Looking back, that is not how I had exactly planned things. Allah was always in charge of my life‘s path, and with time, I learned to submit to His will. I spent many years thinking I knew everything and what I wanted in life, and it was always about me, myself, and I. I stayed true to my aspirations regardless of the many times I changed my mind. I stayed focus in college not dwelling on the idea of marriage and finding a spouse. Growing up I thought I would get married maybe in my mid to late 20‘s after I had pursued my desired schooling and began a career. Family would come later. I had to be happy first. I figured there were many fish in the sea, so why would anyone notice me? I did not want to waste my time in school trying to find someone or get noticed. I did not need that added stress and had bigger fish to fry. Ironically, it was not until I began wearing hijab that I became a ―catch.‖ It may seem like that defeats the purpose of hijab, but people started to see me for me. They were interested in what I had to say, not how I was dressed or what I looked like. I did not have to try to impress anyone superficially. People wanted to befriend me for who I was, not what I was. Nevertheless, I remained focused

mbmuslima.com

in my endeavors to become someone or something. In the midst of my pursuits, my parents received a proposal from a brother in my university‘s MSA. I could not believe it. He was not my type at all, nor would I have ever considered him for marriage. We were from different cultures, different backgrounds, and different interests. What I did appreciate about him was his sincerity about choosing the right way to pursue my hand in marriage.

If a guy truly wants to be with a girl, he will get his and her parents involved right from the start. Any guy who delays or presents excuses is just a waste of time. And this particular guy was not wasting any time. So many people tried to convince me that he was so right for me and getting married early is a good thing. I had to make a big decision. What did I really want out of life? Could I pursue a career after marriage? I desired success and a name. But real success does not come from a professional title or how much money one can make. It comes from sacrifice of oneself and committing to the path of Allah.

7

Almost a decade later, I am nei―...Then, when you have taken a ther a dentist nor an orthodontist. I am decision, put your trust in Allah. Cerfirst and foremost a Muslimah then a tainly, Allah loves those who put their wife and a mother alhumdullilah. I am trust (in Him).‖ 3:159 a writer and a teacher and a human College is a time of selfbeing. I am still learning something discovery and finding one’s new every single day.

What I do want out of life is the pleasure of Allah. I know nothing and He knows all. Allah (SWT) says in the Holy Qur‘an many times for us to put our trust in Him. ―Say: ‗Nothing will happen to us except what Allah has decreed for us: He is our protector.‘ And in Allah let the Believers put their trust.‖ (9:51) ―And put your trust in the AllMighty, The Most Merciful.‖ (26:217)

self-worth. There should not be limitations or restrictions as to what we want out of life.

Regardless of how many times we may change our majors or career paths, we must stay focused. I am glad that I remained driven in college and did not get caught up in trying to find a soul mate. He was there all along.

I just had to keep swimming.

The Prophet Peace Be Upon Him said: "If one whose religion and character pleases you proposes to you, then marry him. If you do not do so, it will be a cause of trial in the land and great corruption" 8

Before the dust of one scandal has settled, another storm is rapidly approaching on the horizon. I can not begin to count the number of Hollywood celebrities, politicians and professional athletes who have recently stood before the television cameras, pleading for public forgiveness. The members of this particular club all share one common element. They each have fallen prey to their lustful desires. If I am going to be fair, I have to admit women are participating just as much in this growing epidemic. Now unfortunately this problem has existed since the beginning of time. Everywhere we look (Muslim countries included) it appears that giving into ones desires are increasingly being accepted by today‘s society.

A Society

By Sister Nazeeha

We live in a world that is designed around instant gratification. Our minds are bombarded daily with the message that…we deserve to be happy. We are urged to work hard and play even harder! As much as it may feel good…we can‘t live by the Nike saying of ―Just Do It!‖ 10

Have you noticed that when you really want something…that little voice inside your brain never stops whispering to you, until that desire has been satisfied?

Named Desire

Subhan Allah the fact that we are Muslims doesn‘t mean we can turn on a switch, and miraculously become perfect. Ask any Muslim and we will be the first to admit…only Islam is perfect. Through prayers, fasting along with other good deeds, we can focus our attention towards the right path insha‘Allah. Human desires are not wrong if we keep them under control. We are told in the Quran about the things which will be most temping and desirable to mankind. ― Beautified for mankind is love of lusts, that which the self lusts after and calls for, beautified by Satan, or by God as a test — of women, children, stored-up heaps of gold and silver, horses of mark, fine [horses], cattle, namely, camels, cows and sheep, and tillage, the cultivation of land.

A Society NamedByDesire Sister Nazeeha That, which is mentioned, is the comfort of the life of this world, enjoyed while it lasts, but then perishes; but God — with Him is the more excellent abode, place of return, which is Paradise, and for this reason one should desire none other than this [abode]‖. Al-Imran 3:14

for guidance and comfort.

There are desires in this world that we should crave. The most important being the reward of Jannah alFirdaus. This is a desire that is only satisfied through constant worship to Allah (swt) only. As we increase in good deeds…the thoughts for doing wrong will lessen.

―With regard to Paradise, it is the abode of reward on the Day of Resurrection for those who believed and did righteous deeds. In it is whatever delights people could desire. In it there is what no eye has seen, no ear has heard, nor has it ever entered the mind of man. Those who enter it will enjoy real pleasures in both a physical and a spiritual sense, and they will live there forever. It will never cease to exist and they will never leave, and their joy will never come to an end, and they will have nothing to disturb their joy.‖ Fataawa al_Lajnah al Daa‘imah

Our Merciful Creator Allah (swt) has not placed on us any situation where a solution can not be found. Life is short especially when compared to the eternity of Paradise and the Hell fires. I imagine we each have our own struggles to contend with daily. There will be days when it seems as if life is too much to handle. When this seems overwhelming let us each remember to turn to Allah (swt)

Imagine the most wonderful scenario you could ever wish for in this life, and remember it will pale in comparison to what is promised for the believers in Islam.

Insha‘Allah we will each hold our dreams and desires close to the heart. May they be released to live eternally with us in the hereafter insha‘Allah.

A Career That Chose Me by S. A. Ali

I like to believe that that I didnâ€&#x;t chose a career but that a career chose me. This may seem rather strange coming from someone who had been through high school and the first two years of university not quite knowing what sort of career she wanted to get into. There I was one day, where I was sitting in the library, planning out my research paper which was due in a week when I looked all around me and suddenly knew what it is I wanted to do with my life. I was always fascinated with the way in which information is organized and made accessible and the library is the epitome of this. I loved walking through the long rows

of stacks that were filled with the scent of paper. I loved holding books of all sizes and with all sorts of decorations on their covers. I loved reading. For all these reasons, I felt it most avidly in my heart that I should become a librarian. Yet, the best part of what it meant to be a librarian remained unlocked to me. It would only be revealed to me when I had finished my studies and began to work. A librarian is a professional who organizes information (that exists in a myriad of formats and not just books) and makes it available to library users. Librarians usually work in libraries of which there are all types – such as public, academic (law,

22

science, arts), school and corporate libraries. As I pursued a graduate degree in Information Studies, my heart was set was working in an academic library. However, it happened that Allah SWT had other plans for me and I embraced them with open arms. My first job was as the librarian of a small public library. I was expected to manage a staff of four, plan programs for adults and children, provide reference services, and carry out many administrative duties. Needless to say, I was overwhelmed. However, I took each day at a time and after a few bumps everything went well, Alhamdulillah. The most beautiful part of my job was helping people find what they needed – a book, mbmuslima.com

a website, an article, a map, even a phone number. It is the opportunity to help people of all ages/backgrounds and find what they are looking for that really makes me feel a sense of accomplishment. After working as a childrenâ€&#x;s librarian in two different countries, I felt the urge to use my professional skills in a way to serve the Muslim community. It was by the Mercy of Allah that I learned of an Islamic school that had an opening for a librarian. There I had the honor of working with a staff who had dedicated their lives to educating Muslim children. Every day, I had the pleasure of interacting with wonderful children between the ages of 4 and 13 years in both

23

A Career That Chose Me

the library and classroom. Most were eager to read; others needed some encouragement. But what really inspired me was the delight in a child‟s eye as he described how much he enjoyed reading a book, the thanks from a student who found information for her research project and the eagerness of the students participating in the reading competition. Story times, book talks and the request for book recommendations from parents all of gave me a sense of satisfaction. Over the years, I‟ve developed a great passion for making reading an integral part of everyday life starting with my family. After all, reading is an essential part of a Muslim‟s life. Our guide, The Qur‟an means „The Reading‟. Moreover, we all know, that the first words revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) were, “Read in

the name of your Lord…” My job as a librarian has helped me fulfill my passion of helping parents, children and young adults find reading an enjoyable and enlightening experience. Still, being a librarian has also fuelled another passion. My dream is to one day open a library for Muslim children and young adults. I hope to create a space where they could learn about the beauty of Islam (past and present) and inspire them to become Muslims who are proud of what they believe in and who can make a difference in the world. For now though, my time is occupied in providing resources for those who are interested in starting a small library (particularly an Islamic library) through my website Islamic Libraries: A Resource Guide http://islamic-libraries.webs.com/. 24

Hot & Sour Soup When I first decided to try this soup, I expected it would turn out similar to the hot & sour soup varieties at many Chinese restaurants, but it is surprisingly different not only in ingredient, but also in flavor. Infused with healthy vegetables and interesting additions, I hope you‘ll experiment with this recipe by creating a version you and your family will enjoy the most.

Ingredients 1 cucumber, peeled and thinly sliced lengthwise  1 packet silken organic tofu (10 oz.)  6 cups vegetable or chicken broth. You can use water instead of broth, but the result may be a bit flat, or lacking in substance  2 Tb. fresh ginger, peeled and thinly sliced in long pieces  3 tsp. salt  2 tsp. superfine white sugar (unbleached)  1 red tomato, diced  2 cups fresh shiitake mushrooms, stems discarded and caps diced. Dried mushrooms can be used but you must allow time to re-constitute them.  2 Tb. Worcestershire sauce  1 Tb. rice vinegar  ¼ tsp. chili oil  ½ cup fresh or frozen peas  3 eggs, beaten  1 cup scallions, chopped 

mbmuslima.com

33

Hot & Sour Soup Directions 1. Remove tofu from packaging by inverting it onto a plate. Cut into about 30 small cubes. Set aside. 2. In a large Dutch oven or stock pot, bring stock or water to a boil. Add the ginger, salt and sugar until sugar dissolves. Reduce heat to medium. 3. Add tofu, mushrooms, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, and chili oil. Cook for 3 minutes, then add the peas and reduce to a simmer. 4. Add the cucumber and simmer for an additional minute. Add the beaten eggs to the pot and use a wooden spoon to thoroughly mix in the eggs. Simmer for 3-5 minutes. 5. Serve with a dash of chili oil and a garnish of scallions on top.

Asian Vegetable Salad This is not your typical salad as we know them in the West. It‘s infused with Asian flavors that combine sweet with salty and sour and go quite well with main courses that have flavors complementing an Asian-inspired palette.

Ingredients 1 cucumber, peeled and thinly sliced lengthwise 3 carrots, peeled and shredded 1 tsp. superfine sugar (unbleached) + 2 Tb. more 2 sticks Chinese celery, thinly sliced ½ cup rice vinegar 2 ½ cups Savoy cabbage, shredded ½ cup scallions, chopped 1 cup fresh bean sprouts (non geneticallymodified & organic, if possible) 2 Tb. dried mint 2 Tb. Worcestershire sauce 2 Tb. lime juice

Rinse with cold water to stop the cooking and drain in a colander, then dry with a cloth towel. 2. Mongolian Beef I‘ve always loved Mongolian beef dishes, but this recipe is interesting because it calls for ground beef instead of strips of beef traditionally used in these types of dishes. I used sauces and seasonings I had on hand and that I felt were healthy and free of as many preservatives and unnatural ingredients as possible. Goes well with a side of steamed white sticky rice, but noodles will work just the same.

Ingredients 2 lbs. ground beef (with fat)  4 cups Savoy cabbage (green)  2 tsp. salt  ¼ cup grape seed oil or any other flavorless oil  2 Tb. Worcestershire sauce  1 Tb. Fish sauce  1 tsp. rice vinegar  ½ tsp. sesame oil  1 small carrot, shredded  1 whole red bell pepper, thinly sliced  ½ cup scallions, chopped  1 Tb. chili oil Fresh cilantro, roughly chopped 

Ingredients for the Marinade  1 Tb. Worcestershire sauce  1 Tb. cornstarch  1 Tb. fresh ginger, minced  3 cloves garlic, minced  ½ tsp. sesame oil

Chapter 4 By Meena Ansari

Jerusalem—The Holy City

Jerusalem – The Holy City—One of the most important sites for Jews, Christians, and Muslims. For Jews, this was the Promised Land that Prophet Moses (Peace be upon him) had told them about thousands of years ago. For Christians, it was the very place where Jesus (Peace be upon him) was born and later descended from Mount Olives. For Muslims, this blessed place was the original Qiblah. Qiblah ,is the name given to the direction in which Muslims offer their 5 times daily prayers. Originally, Jerusalem was the place towards which Muslims faced to pray. However, later is believed that God ordered the messenger Muhammad (Peace be upon him) to change the Kabah towards Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Also, this is the land where Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) descended towards heaven to meet God for the first time. This beautiful city is certainly enriched with three diverse religions and their glorious past. Therefore, it was no surprise that Daniela, Emma and Suhana were immensely excited for their journey. They had now arrived at Ben Gurion International Airport, which was Israel‘s main International Airport, and were sitting at the main lounge for tourist arrivals. The Airport was huge. There were several little Shops and Boutiques. All the signs and directions were written in English, Hebrew and Arabic.

mbmuslima.com

42

Daniela: "I can‘t believe we are finally at the Airport!" Emma: "I know! Jesus! That was one long flight!" Suhana: "I still find it funny how the immigration lady was shocked to see us three together" Daniela: "Hmm… I think she found it odd that I am Jewish, Emma is Christian and you are Muslim" Emma: "Oh yeah…now I remember that Jews and Muslims here especially…" Suhana: "Don‘t get along? I know, sad isn‘t it?" Daniela: "I mean, it just doest‘ make any sense! When Prophet Moses promised Jews a land, he never said that people of other religions were not lived allowed to live with them!" Suhana: "And even in Islam, it is said that as long as the citizen‘s pay their taxes, then they are allowed the same equal rights as any other Muslim! Emma: "Then why are they fighting?" Daniela: "Because no one wants peace! People just want everything to be theirs only! They don‘t want to unite!" Suhana: "Someone‘s got to do something about this…" Emma: "Someone has to make the initiative!" There was a moment of silence. "All passengers taking the 786 Train to Jerusalem should arrive at the station immediately, as the Train is about to board in 15 minutes" said the announcement.

The announcement was later repeated in Hebrew and then Arabic. Emma: "I think it‘s time" Daniela: "It sure is" Daniela, Emma and Suhana smiled at each other. They now had to take a Train from Ben Gurion Railway Station that would take them directly to Jerusalem. As they arrived at the Station, which was not far from the Airport, and sat on the Train, all three were pondered in their deep thoughts. Daniela was missing Steve. She was sad that he had to leave for work out of town, so he could not come to see her off at the Airport in New York. Even though, he did say Bye on the phone, Daniela still wished she could have seen him. Emma was thinking about Eddie. This was the first time she was so far from him. Emma kept remembering Eddie‘s motivational words at the NYC Airport. Eddie: "Em, take care of yourself and go out there and do what you have to do! I know you can accomplish this! I have a lot of faith in you, and remember, if anything ever happens, you will always have a buddy available just one phone call away" By remembering his words, a little tear drop came out of Emma‘s eyes and she whispered to herself "I miss you Ed" Meanwhile, Suhana on the other hand, was not really missing anyone in particular. Though she would have loved it if Naina came along, but she was content with Daniela and Emma as well. Instead, Suhana was dreaming, she had this exciting feeling, as if something magical was going to happen soon.

The Train had now begun to board. Soon, the Train was surrounded by green trees, valleys and mountains. This gave Suhana inspiration to write. So she took out her pen and her Journal and began to write. Suhana’s Journal Pathway to Jerusalem I am sitting here in this Train, which is on its path to Jerusalem. I am surrounded by beauty. Green Trees, Valley Springs, Far off Mountains. All this is such natural beauty, that no mortal can ever match up to create its replica. This is one of those places that reflect my beautiful in ner world. There is so much peace in this wilderness. I feel as though even my Prince is lost in this wilderness. He can‘t find me, or maybe I can‘t find him. But why do I feel as though I am so near him, that I can literally feel his spiritual presence? Is this just a figment of my imagina tion, or is something miraculous about to happen soon? I need answers to these questions of mine and I know I will find them soon. -Suhana All of a sudden the Train stopped. Daniela, who had gone into deep sleep, was suddenly awakened by the sudden stop. Even Emma, who was deeply pondered in her thoughts suddenly shook and looked around. "Girls, we are here" said Suhana with a smile. "Ladies and Gentlemen, we have now arrived at Jerusalem. Please exit towards the nearest doors. Thank You for traveling with us. Hope you haven an enjoyable stay here at the Holy City" Like always, the announcement was repeated in Hebrew and then Arabic. Daniela yawned and then got up to pick her suitcase from the Shelf. Emma also got up with a smile and picked up her luggage

Suhana packed her Journal in her bag, got her suitcase and waited for Daniela and Emma. When the girls were ready to leave, they stepped off the Train onto the Railway Station. It was a mild climate, about 75 degrees Fahrenheit. The station was filled with Tourists, Rabbis and Priests. Daniela: "It feels like I am outside a Synagogue" Emma: "Same here, I feel like I am near a Church" Suhana: "So, what is our hotel‘s name? Hotel Trinity right?" "Hotel Trinity it is!" said Daniela with excitement. Emma: "Umm…Where is the exit?" Suhana: "Let me ask someone" Suhana spotted a Rabbi getting off the Train. It was the same Train which she had traveled in. She went up to him and said: "Excuse me Sir, can you please tell me where the exit from this station is? I am a tourist here so I don‘t know" The Rabbi looked at her for a while and noticed her head cover and her necklace that had "Allah" inscribed on it in Arabic. "Allah" is the Arabic word for God.

46

"I don‘t know" said the Rabbi and immediately walked away. Suhana: "Oh Allah! What is this? Such discrimination? Suddenly Suhana heard another voice. "Excuse me dear, do you need any help?" Suhana turned around and it was another Rabbi. Suhana: "No, its fine sir, I am good" The Rabbi: "Listen dear, I just saw how that man treated you, and I know how you feel, but believe me, If that man was really following the rules of the Holy Torah, he would never act that way. Judaism does not teach people to be rude, no matter what religion the other person is" Suhana smiled and said: "That is very true sir, I am glad there are people like you who understand" Rabbi: "Thank you child, I certainly did not want you getting the wrong impression. Now, you wanted to know where the exit is right. Just keep going straight and you will come into a Gate where there will be security guards who will check your passport. Once that is done, you will exit the gate and thereby exit the station as well" Suhana: "Thank you so much sir" Rabbi: "God Bless you Child" Suhana: "Good Day Sir" Daniela, Emma and Suhana then headed towards the exit.

47

While walking Emma said:"That Rabbi was nice, it was kind of him to help you" Daniela: "Not everyone is ignorant, there are people who know the real purpose and abide by it" Emma: "Exactly! There is good and bad everywhere, but just because one person is bad, that certainly does not mean everyone else is too!" "May I please see your passports Ladies" said one of the security men. The girls had now reached the gate. They took out their passports and showed them to the man. Once he Okayed them, they went through the gate. "Oh Jesus! Your blessed land!!" said Emma with happiness and excitement. It seemed as though the girls had arrived to an ancient city. There were several shops and boutiques, but where more authentic then the ones at the Airport. There were men selling fruits and vegetables on carts. The buildings were designed in Arabic style. There were women with head covers on, and some without them. A Rabbi and a Priest were even spotted shaking hands and greeting each other. Several Arabs were also seen, all wearing scarves and saying "Salaam" to each other. "Salaam" is the word Muslims use when they greet one another. It means Peace. The three girls were stunned by this scenario. They could not believe a place like this even existed. Daniela: "I am speechless, I have no words!! This is certainly the promised land!!" Suhana: "Mashallah!!"

48

All of a sudden Suhana‘s hear began to beat faster. She felt the wind blowing at a faster pace. Her goose bumps stood straight up. Even her breathing increased. Suhana felt as though her heart skipped a beat. What was happening to her? "Are you three ladies lost?" said a voice. Daniela, Emma and Suhana turned around all at once and found a six feet tall handsome guy standing in front of them. He had sea-green eyes and wore simple jeans and a sweater with a scarf around his neck and a cap on his head. "Because if you are, then Raj the tour guide is happily available at your service" He said with a big smile, while taking off his cap.

together information relevant to Muslims in southern California to help unify the Muslim communities in the region. Even though there are a lot of masajid and Muslims in the area, we have experienced events and fundraisers being held with Muslims living a short distance away unaware of them. By pulling that information into a central website, it gives our communities the ability to easily see what is going on and sharing with them things they may want to attend.

The articles and videos typically focus on political or religious issues that are either specifically related to Muslims in southern California or global issues that we want to share and discuss within our communities. We want to provide a voice to local opinions and commentary that are often in contrast to the mainstream media - largely because of a better understanding of Islam and Muslim communities.

What does the name represent?

Does SoCal Muslims have any future plans?

The name is a common abbreviation for southern California and it really describes the basis of the effort of the website - to focus on unifying our specific part of the global Muslim community. This is where we think our efforts will be most effective.

How does SoCal Muslims go about finding events to post? Our team lives in and around the different areas that share events so we learn about them, usually, from the masajid or event organizers. As our communities leverage their use of technology they are sending us events they want advertised. In the future, we hope to be able to pull in updates from Masjid websites through RSS feeds.

Our plans are to continue growing the number of readers and followers so that the website will be more effective at distributing information. We hope to grow to a level where we can help organize the community and have a bigger impact on fundraisers, lectures, and speeches by getting more people interested and attending. We also want to work with more Muslim business owners who want to reach a targeted audience and help them help grow their businesses.

Does SoCal offer anything to those who don't live in California? We welcome everyone to come check out 56

Interview with Who are the minds behind Urban Muslimahs? Originally it was only myself (Ahdia ReidAdams), recently I've added a Partner (Fatimah Bedri) to the business who has recently relocated to Toronto from Cairo, Egypt. When did Urban Muslimahs launch? I've been selling items out of my home since 2008. Our online store will officially be launched this Spring-Summer insha'Allah.

Interview by Yasmin Essa

be told "sorry we don't carry that in your size". It was disheartening because as women we vary as do sizes and shouldn't be limited. From there, I slowly started placing orders and selling items via my living room with sisters and women in general who loved the quality and prices of my gowns and also scarves. Every completed transaction was carried out via word of mouth. It wasn't under the end of 2009 that I decided to bring our concept online to spread the word about our online store. Now we are being featured in wonderful magazines such as MBMuslima and hopefully others insha'Allah. We also have scheduled a few upcoming conferences in the warmer months of this year. These are things have certainly picked up and I constantly make dua in appreciation.

What's the story behind the name? Urban Muslimahs represents who we are as Muslim women, both individually and collectively. We are not only wives, mothers, daughters, but we are also business women and career women who can appreciate having affordable plus size clothing options which are current yet also modest (1 piece Who is the Urban Muslimah customer? to 2piece outfits ranging in colors, materials A budget and fashion conscience Woman and styles). who admires various designs and items being imported on a worldwide basis in which Tell us a little bit about the start up of has also shown interest as per the lack of Urban Muslimas and how it's grown. plus sized retailers who cater to modest I had grown tired of entering into stores & fashion. Is there anything else you want MBM readers to know about Urban Muslimahs? Yes, we would like for MBM readers to made aware of our various item customization services. Interview with blogger Khadijah Egkf Interview by Yasmin Essa

KhadeejahWolf definitely makes someone wonder where that came from. So, what's the story behind the name? There is no real story. I just like the association of wolf and the image of Muslim. When I think about wolf, I think about "solitude in the mountains", "meditation", "power", "intelligence", "beauty". I grew up hearing people say "it's a she-wolf", referring to me. I have taken the habit of choosing as nickname "Wolf", even though a wolf is not well seen by all of the world. Subhanallah:)

book profiles as Dawah tools. At the same time, I take care of my parents, help some members of my family in different works, try to expand my knowledge of Islam and memorize the Holy Quran.

Tell us a little bit about yourself. I am a very ordinary muslimah who believes in Allah and Prophet Mohammed, and who has a lot of defects that I try to correct, and some qualities that I strive to maintain. I'm 22 years old I was born in Belgium to a Moroccan Muslim father and converted Belgian mother. My mother has taught me everything! Arabic, Quran, Hadith. She has spared everything for my brother and I to have a 100% Muslim education, Alhamdulillah. I studied engineering for 4 years. After a year of university in Morocco, I wanted to become a computer engineer, but fate willed otherwise. I stopped my studies a year ago and I decided to invest myself completely in Islamic Dawah. Currently I using my blog and my twitter and face-

What is your favorite thing about blogging? Dawah!!! My only purpose and pleasure is to share the cultures, knowledge and wonderful values of Islam Alhamdulillah.

When did you first start blogging? As I said before, I have really started to invest myself in Islamic Dawah a little over a year ago. I had begun with my profile on facebook and twitter, then I have created my blog in December 2009, pending to create my own site inshaallah.

How does being a Muslim woman influence your blogging in ways it would not otherwise had you been another religion? Alhamdulillah!! Islam speaks so much about the Muslim woman, about her values, about her important role in society, and about her nature. There are also so many things that people do not understand about the condition of Women in Islam, the veil (Hijab) for

example. There are also so many great stories to remind ourselves about, such as the story of : Sayidah Khadeejah radhiya llah 'anha, Sayidah Aishah, Sayidah Hafsa, Sayidah Fatima Zahrah, Sayidah Mariam . These are all subjects that i love to share and that make me thank Allah that I am a Muslimah Alhamdulillah!

it is the language of the Noble Qur'an, so I love it and I feel lucky to understand and use it Alhamdulillah. I've learned English briefly at school and have continued alone, through my readings and surfing the Internet. Alhamdulillah, I'm very happy that Allah has given me the chance to juggle three languages for the benefit of the Islamic Dawah.

What have you accomplished through your blog? Alhamdulillah, I've managed to use my blog to get across messages on principles and values that are often forgotten by the youth. I use all of what I publish on the web in my conversations with my family circle, my friends, and at the mosque. Many people are often very surprised to see how blogging and surfing the web can become productive inshaAllah. Besides that, the only my blogging has made my participation in Islamic Dawah as one person, extraordinary.

Where can users find your blog? http://egkhadijaf.blogspot.com/

MashaAllah, you speak English, French, and Arabic! And you also blog in English, French and Arabic!! Tell us about it. My mother language is French, so I feel most comfortable speaking and writing it. Arabic is the language I've learned from my parents and at school, I also know that

The theme of this issue is "Desires of this Dunya in relation to Islam". What thoughts do you have about this topic? One of the main principles of jihad in Islam, is to master our desires, and to hold on in front of the many wishes that we may have. It is very important to give little value to life on earth and make many sacrifices for the eternal life. Eternal Life is more beautiful than the one that we live. However, Islam is not a difficult religion; we can enjoy all the pleasures of life if we do not commit sins, and if we really love Allah, our prophet and our religion, one day, our desires will match up with our duties as Muslims, like it was with the companions of the Prophet pbuh.

Interview with the Latino American Dawah Organization /PIEDAD Interview with Sr. Nylka Vargas P.I.E.D.A.D National Coordinator Interview by Yasmin Essa

“Propagacion Islamica para la Educacion e la Devocion a Allah el Divino”

I would like to thank Sister Nancy from NJ for inspiring me to essentially include articles catered towards Latino Muslims and therefore reaching out to LADO for this interview.

For those who don’t know, what is the LADO network? The Latino American Dawah Organization is generally referred to as simply LADO, the LADO Group, or the LADO Network for simplicity sake. LADO is essentially a group of Muslims, who are mostly Latino, who work to accomplish the LADO mission, which is to promote Islam within the Latino community. The links profived at the end of this interview should following links should be a good starting point toward understanding more about LADO and Latino Muslims. How did you first get involved with LADO? I first learned of LADO through an online search. I was looking for other Latino Muslims in the country at a time. I didn‘t really know any. I found LADO in 2004. They had a well-established reputation for helping Latino American connect through a very active group (lado@yahoogroups.com), as

well as their strong online presence (www.latinodawah.org). Thereafter, and as my own Dawah involvement grew, I became one of the NJ contacts. As you have shared with me, you are the coordinator for the PIEDAD sisters dawah organization. Please tell us more about that, including it's birth, growth, etc. I joined P.I.E.D.A.D leadership as the NJ/ NYC Coordinator in 2007. Since our founder Khadijah Rivera‘s passing, may Allah have mercy on her, on November 22, 2009, I‘ve taken the National Coordinator role until all chapters regroup. Insha‘Allah. Sr. Khadijah founded PIEDAD in 1988 in NYC. Literally, P.I.E.D.A.D means ―taqwa, piety or God fearing‖. In its acronym form it reads ―Propagacion Islamica Para La Educacion y La Devocion a Allah el Divino‖ (Islamic dawah to educate and worship Allah the most High). Our first seminar was at a club where we brought food 62

and invited our extended non -Muslim family. The founders of PIEDAD were not all-Spanish speaking. In fact we had a Kashmiri sister and a Pakistani who understood the importance of da‘wah to Latinos. Although we are known for our numerous seminars with speakers like: Iman Siraj Wahaj, Mohammed Nasim, Dr. Thomas Irving, Dr Omar Kasule, and others the truth is that these events were never as productive as our One on One da‘wah. It was this personalization of the deen that assisted us. Here we could speak freely and clearly use the dua‘ that releases our tongue so that we may be understood. PIEDAD began as da‘wah directed to the overlooked Hispanic women in NYC. It has continued its specialization to that intimate group without keeping others from assistance and participation. Working with women was especially rewarding because we come from the same place. Our first step has always been to form sincere and deep friendships that allow mistakes and are nonjudgmental. Secondly, to teach only what we are sure is correct and for deeper questions always have a sheikh or imam available for advice. Our religious advisor to date is Imam Ali Siddiqui of California. Third, and most important to assure the new Muslimah that Islam is for everyone and that we are not to separate ourselves from any other Muslims as ―only Hispanic Muslims‖. And last but not least, to seek Islamic knowledge for the rest of their lives and never be satisfied with their comprehension but to have the thirst of learning in their hearts solely for the pleasure of Almighty Allah swt. After a sister learns to make salat and has an elementary understanding of Islam she is directed to the nearest Islamic center to continue her studies and referred to books mbmuslima.com

that she can study to further her knowledge. If a sister wishes to go further in order to serve Allah swt she may want to join us in da‘wah and for that we do Daiyett training. Which are basically a continuation of their studies in Islam and the practice of the deen in the service of Allah swt. What has LADO/PIEDAD accomplished? Alhamdullilah, much has been done over the years. Here are some of our accomplishments thus far: PIEDAD (1990) hosted a program at Colombia University Imam Siraj Wahaj Masjid Al Taqwa and Mohamed Nasim of ICNA. 5 Chapters pulled together to buy an 800 toll free number 1-800-44-ALLAH (GA, NY, FL, IL, NJ) Distribution of thousands of books and pamphlets to correction facilities and Islamic Organizations. PIEDAD CHICAGO, 1st Hispanic Muslim Conference guest speaker Jamal Badawi PIEDAD ISNA - Guest Speaker, piedadlatinodawah.blogspot.com/2008/08/onegod-one-people-one-belief-isna-2001.html

Telemundo Interviews following 9-11 to demystify Islam to the Latinos of Miami and also on the "Christina Show." PIEDAD representative Khadija Rivera nominated to attend Second Annual Latino Islamic Congress in Spain. 2006-2007 Islamic Society of Tampa Bay brought Imam Ali Siddiqui from California to speak on need of da'wah to Hispanics. piedad-latinodawah.blogspot.com/2007/06/islamspreading-rapidly-among-latinos.html

Project Downtown for three years PIEDAD has partnered with PD to bring food and friendship to the homeless of Tampa Bay. At times we cooked "arroz con pollo" to give them that Spanish flair. Now as outreach 63

Hope: PIEDAD volunteers with this Inter-faith civic organization. Tampa Bay Muslim Alliance: PIEDAD volunteers at the Annual Islamic Charity Festival. Prayer Vigil/Purple Hijab Day: (FEB 13-16) PIEDAD joins the campaign organized nationally by Baatul Salaam Network. Islamic Studies: sisters-only halaqas, and classes at the masjid in English and Spanish. New Muslimah support groups

quite boisterous, outgoing and strong-willed in their acceptable traditions. We must learn as Latina Muslims, to be strong-willed, boisterous and independent within the limits imposed by Allah. Further, educating our new sisters about equitability of the gender-role differentiation, wisdom of the ―qawwamah‖ our men have over us, and true teachings of Islam is a first step. I recently watched a nice YouTube educational broadcast put together by What are future goals for LADO and www.CasaIslamica.com from Houston, PIEDAD? faithful practicing Latina Muslimah. There then follows the socioeconomic issues. I‘m being very general here, but many sisters that I‘ve encountered come with numerous social issues and concerns: low income families, recently divorced, illegal status, unhealthy marriages, etc. More work is needed to link the spiritual (component of Islam with the urgent needs facing our sisters (and brothers). This of course goes beyond all gender or ethnic labels. We constantly talk about how Islam is a ―way of life‖, and it most certainly is. Now, the struggle is to live it in our communities. As we know, there is no nationalism in Islam. However, as human beings, we identify with those of our culture in certain instances. There is such a large community of Latino Muslima women out there! However, many Latino women who are new to Islam often tell me that they feel alone and don't realize this community till much later. What advice can you give to a Latino who has converted to Islam and feels this way? I agree, as Muslims we‘re inclusive of all races, creed, ethnicities, etc. PIEDAD is keen on promoting this point. Truth is that we do identify with others that we share similar values and things in common with. We cannot overlook the Latino/Hispanic group identity to be a real one. And in response to that need PIEDAD started. Within that group, identity is the language issue and sometimes language barrier. That‘s the relatedness factor that we share in common. We try to address that issue in our small halaqas, and in our discourse with sisters nationally. Insha‘Allah. Keeping at the forefront the Islamic principles and standards, the cultural exchange mbmuslima.com

that Latina sisters have is a natural one. I‘d say it is even more important for those sisters estranged from their families, or new reverts feeling overwhelmed with what seems to be a total makeover. Once the hugs and kisses following a public Shahaada dissipates the true test of patience begins. PIEDAD hopes to emulate the Ansari model. Social support is key. I wasn‘t really part of the Muslim community when I reverted to Islam for various reasons. It wasn‘t until I joined the Muslim community that it became much easier to practice my faith. My advice to a Latina Muslim who feels this way is that support is out there today, wa Alhamdullilah! If you have a question about Islam you may dial toll free 1-877-WhyIslam to talk with a Hispanic hotline associate. Stay connected with PIEDAD events by joining piedad@yahoogroups.com, or email correspondence nvargas@piedadonline.com. We‘ll even help to connect you to sisters in your area, break the ice for you, or send you literature if you need it. Do not give up! Also, do not be judgmental. It may be that you had a negative experience at your local mosque or with another Muslim. For whatever reason you‘ve analyzed the situation to be, remember that we‘re all humans. Also, remember that you must take the risk of getting to know others and opening up too. Establish and keep the Salat, read Qur‘an, and make plenty of duas. Ask Allah (swt) for assistance constantly, for He listens to the dua of his servants.

How does Islam keeps you inspired? The answer to that is simply by living Islam. Alhamdullilah the Islamic faith is not a standard set of laws and prescriptions for us to adhere to and that‘s that! The Qur‘an and Hadith of the Prophet transcends time and if one is sincere they will benefit from reading and studying them. I‘m inspired through my prayers, going to the masjid, spending time with my husband, family and friends. On the flip side of the coin, I‘m inspired to participate and take action, when I see preventable hardships, wrongdoing, and outright injustices committed by others; Islam has the solution to these ailments. Belief that Allah is supporting this religion and supporting the true Muslims inspires me!

give back to the community, and just offer a helping hand to those that may need it: PIEDAD, LADO, mosque‘s various programs and events. As far as my typical day, I love my solitude: morning sip of coffee, admiring the beautiful pleasantries of nature, laughing at small nuances, trying out a new recipe, coordinating my outfits is a must, remembering my mother‘s indomitable spirit, and my husband‘s great sense of humor!

Likewise, desiring to have the fine riches and luxuries are quite alright in Islam, so long as we do not lose sight of our ultimate purpose in life, worshipping Allah (swt). Desiring to be in a position of power is halal, so long as we are treating those under our authority with justice and fairness. Our religion keeps us on check. Our very action is a form of worship, Subhanallah! Even in our food consumption habits, overeating can lead to Type II diabetes, coronary heart disease, high cholesterol, and selfishness. If we follow the tradition of the Prophet Muhammed (saw) in a standard

meal sitting we should be consuming 1/3 food, 1/3 beverage, and 1/3 air! How many hungry mouths could we feed then indirectly or directly by the mere thought on cutting back on our consumption? Thus, to lead a hedonistic lifestyle is to lead an unchecked lifestyle that not only has negative consequences to the self but also affects others. And our Islamic faith is a comprehensive faith that does take into account the mundane and intrinsic nature of all creation. What a blessing indeed. Alhamdullilah.
