We understand that being out of education for a while can be daunting, but courses are designed to make the transition into Higher Education far more manageable. The courses can be demanding and will require time that is utilised studying outside of lessons, but if you have the determination to achieve your goals, we guarantee to help you get there.

A FLEXIBLE PATHWAY TO UNIVERSITY STUDY Want a degree but don’t have the entry requirements? An Access to Higher Education Diploma at Middlesbrough College could be the answer! With significant demand in the UK for skilled individuals who are qualified in areas such as teaching nursing, engineering and social work, an Access to Higher Education Diploma is a progression route that is likely to lead to a prosperous and fulfilling career! Middlesbrough College has over 580 students on Access Diplomas across a range of subjects and boasts fantastic pass rates.

Most Access Diplomas can be completed in one year with study across 2 - 3 days of the week and several of our courses are offered as evening sessions. Check the individual course details throughout this guide for indepth information on when the courses are delivered.

The Access to Higher Education Diploma is a qualification which is designed to prepare those without necessary qualifications to go on and study at university in their chosen field. Our courses will provide learners with the necessary skills and knowledge required to help them progress to a degree by the time they complete their qualification. An Access Diploma is not designed for learners who have recently studied A Levels, GCSEs or similar programmes seeking an alternative route into Higher Education, with the majority of those who enrol being over 19 years old.

We have state of the art classrooms and workshops and offer first class student support. The Access to Higher Education Diploma is widely recognised by UK universities, and many actively encourage applications from Access to HE Diploma students. Each year, around 20,000 Access to Higher Education Diploma students apply for a degree course at a UK university. They go on to study a wide range of subjects, including law, education, nursing and business.

Student Services The Student Services Department comprises of a dedicated team of qualified and experienced staff on hand to help you succeed. A STEPPING STONE TO your degree An Access to Higher Education Diploma is designed to prepare you for university study. Our courses will cover a range of units designed to develop academic skills for successful progression into independent study at university level.

An Access Diploma is free to students who go onto university level study to complete a degree. The Advanced Learner Loan will not be repayable by students who progress into Higher Education and complete their degree.

FINANCING YOURFuture If you are planning on studying an Access to Higher Education Diploma at Middlesbrough College, there are a range of options available for you to achieve your ambitions. See course details for prices, but in some cases it could be FREE!

Paying for Your Access to Higher Education Diploma If you are aged 19 – 23 and this is your first full Level 3 course then it will be free. If you are aged 19 – 23 and you already have a full Level 3 qualification or you are aged 24 or over on the start date of the course, you will have to pay fees or apply for an Advanced Learner Loan.

UNDERSTANDING THE ADVANCED LEARNER LOAN The Advanced Learner Loan is opening the doors to further education for those over the age of 19 who may not have previously considered going back into study. The minimum loan you can get is £300 and is dependent on the course you are studying. Paid directly to the College, the support of the Advanced Learner Loan means you don’t have to pay all fees upfront.

• Easy to apply for • No means testing or credit checks • Repayments only start when you are earning over £21k

Most importantly, the Advanced Learner Loan will not be repayable if you go on to university and complete your degree. For details on the Advanced Learner Loan, go to www.gov.uk/advanced-learner-loan

Loan Repayments You pay back your loan (plus interest at a rate of inflation plus 3%) when you finish your course and earn more than £21,000 a year or the equivalent per month. Your loan repayments will stop if your income drops below £21,000 a year. Your monthly repayments amount will be 9% of any income you earn over £21,000.

The course is designed to support adults back into education and to develop the basic academic skills required on a full Access Diploma. DEVELOP ESSENTIAL MATHS & ENGLISH SKILLS Maths and English are essential skills we use in everyday life and employers and universities need you to have them. If you don’t have these essential qualifications it’s never too late to get them and they can act as a great foundation block for further study onto an Access Diploma. If you don’t have a Level 1 qualification in English or maths this could be a good place to start before beginning your Access Diploma. We have a range of maths and English qualifications available at all levels from Basic Skills Certificates to Functional Skills and GCSE. These courses are FREE for anyone 19+ who doesn’t have a previous Grade C or above in these subjects.

The course provides you with the skills and abilities you need in order to take an active and responsible role in your community, your everyday life, workplace and educational setting. You will be encouraged to investigate and analyse language and to experiment and use language creatively. The course develops your skills in the four language skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening. Entry Requirements Students must have a grade ‘D’ in GCSE English (Language or Literature), a Level 2 literacy qualification such as Functional Skills or have passed a short reading and writing task issued by the College if they have no relevant qualifications. What’s the next step? Once we have received your application form, you will be invited to attend an interview in the College with one of our tutors who will chat with you about the course and what it entails. You will also have the chance to ask any questions about the course, the College, and any support you may need whilst on the programme. All applicants are asked to undertake a short written comprehension task which involves reading a passage and answering a set of questions and tasks related to it. You will also be required to undertake an English and maths assessment to ascertain your current level of ability.
