Your questions, answered! What is an Access to HE Diploma? An Access to Higher Education Diploma is a qualification designed to get you to University, so if you want to get a degree to help change your life, but you don’t have the entry requirements, an Access to HE Diploma is the perfect choice for you. You will study a range of modules that make up 60 credits for the full Diploma. The courses can be demanding and will require study time outside of lessons, but if you have the determination to achieve your dreams, we can help to get you there.

Who can study an Access to HE Diploma? An Access course is the perfect stepping stone for mature learners who are looking to progress onto Higher Education.

How many days will I be in College and can I fit an Access course around my busy home life? The Access to Higher Education Diplomas are one-year courses. Most of our Access courses are offered as a daytime or evening option. If you choose to study a daytime Access to Higher Education Diploma you will be in College 3 days per week. If you choose to study an evening Access to Higher Education Diploma you will be in two evenings per week. We also offer a Distance Learning Access to Higher Education Diploma in Health. This course is 100% distance learning so you don’t need to come into College at all and you can learn from the comfort of your own home.

How can I study an Access to HE Diploma for FREE? If you are aged 19-23 and this is your first full Level 3 course then the Diploma is FREE! If you are aged 24 or over on the start date of the course, you will have to pay fees, but you will be able to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to cover these costs. This is easy to apply for and the repayments only start when you are earning over £25,000. Better still, if you progress and successfully complete a Higher Education course, the loan is not repayable, meaning your Access course is FREE!

What support is available for me?

With small class sizes compared to Universities and all the individual support you need to ease back into education, we will help you succeed and reach your goal. Our staff are experienced in their fields and will help to inspire your learning.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed through presentations, written assignments, practical assignments and examinations that will help to prepare you for University.

Taking savings higher An Access Diploma is lot cheaper than a foundation course at University! Plus, if you go on to successfully complete a Higher Education course your Advanced Learner Loan will be written off and your course will be FREE!

Advanced Learner Loan If you are aged 19 or over at the start of your course you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to cover your tuition fee through Student Finance England via www.gov.uk/student-finance.

For 2021 our Access to Higher Education Diploma fees are set between £3,000-£4,000 per course. Please see each individual course for the price. If you do not already hold a full Level 3 qualification (such as two A Levels or a Level 3 BTEC Diploma) and are aged between 19-23, your course will be FREE!

The loan is designed to pay for part of, or the full cost of tuition. You’ll only have to start making repayments after you complete your course and only if you are earning over £25,000 per year. Your monthly repayments will be 9% of any income you earn over £25,000. Payments are taken from your earning through the tax system.

If you are aged 19-23 and you already have a full Level 3 qualification or you are aged 24 or over on the start date of your course you will have to pay for your fees or you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan.

You will need to apply for your Advanced Learner Loan through Student Finance England. You can find out more information and apply for this by visiting their website: www.gov.uk/student-finance. The Advanced learner loan will not be repayable by students who successfully complete a Higher Education course, so your Access Diploma could be FREE!

English, maths and science (GCSEs and Functional Skills) If you don’t have a grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths or are not working towards a Level 2 in maths and English, don’t worry. Studying a Functional Skills or GCSE qualification would be a good place to start before beginning your Access Diploma. Overview This qualification aims to develop your skills and confidence by helping you to improve your skills at a level appropriate to your needs and competence. You will develop your reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in a number of different ways, practising skills which you will need in your everyday life. You will be taught using a variety of interactive IT resources alongside formal classroom teaching.

Overview GCSE mathematics is a one year course to enable students to obtain at least a grade 4 (C). The course covers number, algebra, statistics and geometry.

There is also a focus on developing laboratory practical skills and analysis which is integral to any University level science course. What Will I Study? Core modules include: • Chemistry • Chemical Science • Biology • Physics: Wave Motion • Human Biology: Immunology • Human Biology: Genetics • Practical Scientific Project: Report and Evaluation • English Language • Mathematics: Systems, Logarithmic, Exponential and Trigonometric Functions • Mathematics: Data Handling and Statistics Modules offered may vary. Entry Requirements GCSE English, maths and science at grade C (5) would be advisable, but the minimum requirement is a Level 2 qualification in both English and maths.
