Who are they for?

Training an apprentice is a great way to mould individuals into the perfect employee for your business.

Apprenticeships can be completed by existing staff who want to recognise and develop their skills, or by someone who has joined the organisation in an apprenticeship role.

Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes designed to industry standards and more specifically, around the needs of employers leading to nationally recognised qualifications. There are three levels of apprenticeship: Level 2 - Intermediate Level Apprenticeship (GCSE) Level 3 - Advanced Level Apprenticeship (A Level) Level 4 - Higher Level Apprenticeship (Up to Degree Level)

Understanding apprenticeships

All apprenticeships include on-the-job competence and skills training along with underpinning theoretical knowledge and essential work skills including communication, team work, numeracy and IT. Depending on the learner’s previous qualifications, they will also continue to study English, maths and ICT. Apprentice training is primarily delivered in the workplace and offers minimum disruption to your business. The training programme is designed to your specific requirements and learning is flexible to fit around your organisation.

Northern Skills Group can support your current employees through apprenticeship frameworks developed to improve their existing skills set allowing them to progress in their job role. We can also help you to recruit new apprentices offering a full recruitment service. An initial screening process is carried out, followed by an assessment, to ensure the candidates we put forward for your vacancy are the most beneficial for your organisation. Apprenticeships are available for anyone over the age of 16; there is no upper age limit. Your apprentice must be given a contract of employment and be employed for a minimum of 30 hours a week, if not more.

Your apprentice will be allocated a personal Training Adviser to support them throughout their training and to help them achieve their qualification. Our Training Adviser have been chosen for their expertise and industry background and provide a responsive service for both employers and learners.

Northern Skills Group has a number of state of the art training kitchens and demonstration theatres as well as an award winning restaurant ‘The Waterside Brasserie’ based at Middlesbrough College.

Partnership with Frances Atkins Michelin starred chef Frances Atkins is working with Northern Skills Group to deliver the highest standards of training to Catering & Hospitality students. Frances will deliver a series of master classes and work with students to ensure that apprentices are working to the highest professional standards.

Business Benefits: This qualification develops a learner’s customer service skill set, their understanding of the sector and their awareness of the importance of health, safety and hygiene whilst in a professional environment. Learners will be expected to prepare, cook and finish vegetable, fish, poultry and meat dishes. Dependant on the role, they may also be expected to prepare, finish and present cocktails, healthier dishes and hot and cold desserts.

Business Benefits: This qualification develops a learner’s customer service skill set, their understanding of the sector and their awareness of the importance of health, safety and hygiene whilst in a professional environment. Learners will be expected to handle cash payments, serve both alcoholic and soft drinks, serve foods in a variety of settings and prepare hot drinks using specialist equipment.

Cleaning and Environmental Support Services Level: 2 & 3 Start Date: Flexible Duration: TBC Days and Times: 4 days with your employer and 1 day at Northern Skills Group per week. Business Benefits: This qualification has three pathways and is suitable for employees working in pest management, local environmental services and cleaning & support services. The qualification will develop a learner’s knowledge of specialist machinery and infection control, whilst building skills in cleaning, working in confined spaces and team work.

Business Benefits: This qualification develops a learner’s customer service skill set, their understanding of the sector and their awareness of the importance of health, safety and hygiene whilst in a professional environment. Learners will enhance their skills in cooking cakes, biscuits, scones, meat dishes, pasta dishes, bread & dough products and other dishes. Learners will gain the confidence to open and close the kitchen and interact with customers.

Facilities Management Level: 2 Start Date: Flexible Duration: 1 year Days and Times: 4 days with your employer and 1 day at Northern Skills Group per week. Business Benefits: This qualification covers the practical skills and knowledge required to work within the facilities industry. It has three pathways available and is suitable for employees working in cleaning, ground maintenance and site maintenance. Learners will develop skills in health and safety, service delivery and efficiency and customer relationships.

Depending on the nature of the business, learners can also complete modules in the supervision and development of wine lists, reception services, workforce development, hospitality services and function work.

Business Benefits: This higher level qualification covers a range of management topics relating to food and beverage services, new menu production, front office and kitchen and front of house supervision. It is designed for employees with industry experience who are looking to progress into management roles including general, front office, operations or unit management.

Kitchen Services Level: 2 Start Date: Various Duration: 1 year Days and Times: 4 days with your employer and 1 day at Northern Skills Group Business Benefits: This qualification is designed to develop the skills of those who are employed in catering roles or for those already in a position to start their qualification at a Level 2.
