Foreword
Discover our successes in 2014/15
Welcome to the College Annual Report for the academic year 2014/15. It is with great pride that I welcome you to our annual report which highlights the successes and achievements of Middlesbrough College over the last academic year. From the governing body through to every member of staff, we are driven by a determination to generate opportunities, employment and prosperity throughout Teesside. We aim to equip our students with the skills and behaviours that will enable them to be successful in their future careers, whilst addressing the demands by both local and national industries. I am pleased that Middlesbrough College continues to be a leading provider of education and training in the region and we are proud to offer courses in every sector at every level from entry to postgraduate qualifications. This academic year, a record number of students enrolled onto a full time course with us in September, as Middlesbrough College remains the first choice of study in further education for many school leavers not only in Middlesbrough but across the Tees Valley. This is a reflection of our high quality student experience, great teaching and support, and outstanding facilities and resources. I am pleased to report that our student achievement rates have improved again this year and we have seen a marked improved in attendance levels on main programmes, English & maths and Apprenticeships to their highest level ever. Employability skills are absolutely key to the young people we are preparing for work or university and all of our full time students participate in our new Advantage programme which gives them the skills they need for their life and work. We continue to expand our recruitment of Apprentices across a broad range of curriculum areas and have forged strong and meaningful partnerships with over 1,000 employers across Teesside.
A key part of Middlesbrough College’s strategy is a commitment to make the region a centre of excellence for STEM skills, by delivering first class training to those wanting a career in a STEM profession, and by supporting the growing science and engineering industries in the region. That commitment has resulted in the College investing £20m into its STEM facilities with the third phase - a £12m purpose built STEM Centre completed and ready to open its doors in September 2015. The STEM Centre will provide training by industrial experts for industry and will be a leading provider of technical training, skills, behaviours and competency solutions for a range of industries bridging the skills gap, meeting the needs of employers across a wide range of sectors and producing a highly –skilled workforce for the future. It will specialise in Process, Oil and Gas, Supply Chain Solutions, Advanced Manufacturing, Engineering, Design and Manufacture, Applied Science and Business Improvement. I would like to personally thank our students, staff and governors for what has been a fantastic year for the College. Despite the very challenging public sector funding climate, we have continued to grow our student numbers and their achievements whilst playing a crucial part in shaping education in Middlesbrough and beyond. We are confident that we will continue to enhance our reputation for excellence in education and training, meeting the needs of young people, adults and employers across the Tees Valley.

Our Financial Statement In recent years Middlesbrough College has set out an ambitious investment and growth strategy, based on ensuring a high quality student experience and aimed at protecting and expanding its income base in the light of continued public sector austerity. In May 2013, the College submitted an ambitious three phase STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) investment plan to the Skills Funding Agency seeking to secure capital grant funding of £6.67m which was approved in July 2013. The rationale for investment was driven by the Local Enterprise Partnership priorities to ensure the College would meet employer’s skills needs, promote inward investment and job creation. The project has forged a unique partnership between industry and education to ensure the new facilities drive ambition, foster innovation and creativity and replicate as far as possible a real working environment. This ambitious STEM investment has been developed by industry for industry. This bold response brings with it financial implications. However, Governors and staff of the College are determined to ‘do the right thing’ even where this means making up-front investments in high quality staff and facilities and returning operating deficits as a result of the delay in the receipt of growing income. Due to the continued investment, the College is reporting a deficit on continuing operations of £0.309m for 2014/15, which is a significant improvement from the budgeted deficit position of £1.248m and reflects our determination to invest in staff in advance of new business development.
