Meet Emma Who Realised Her Dream to Become a Hairdresser

A creative streak and a long-time ambition to become a hairdresser prompted Emma Fairbank-Taylor to realise her dream here at Middlesbrough College. The 37-year-old mum of three is well on her way to becoming a professional hairdresser thanks to the College’s Retrain courses. Emma, who is mum to two teenagers and an eight-year-old, embarked on a Level 2 Retrain to Hairdressing course last year, and has excelled ever since. She’s now studying towards a Level 3 qualification which will equip her with all the skills needed to become a professional stylist. Alongside her studies Emma is providing mobile hairdressing to private clients, and her long-term ambition is to open her own salon.

Pop in and see us, we are open every day from 8.30am - 5.00pm. Apply or enrol on your course Our Course Information team will advise you on how to enrol for your course. For some courses you may need to complete an application form but for most it will be a straight forward enrolment, which will only take ten minutes. See you on your first day We will let you know when you are due to start your course when you come in to enrol and then you will be ready to begin your first class!

Funding Your Course Many of our courses are FREE, where there is a charge it is a nominal fee which is usually for the cost of the materials. If you wish to enrol on one of our FREE Helping You Into Work courses (pages 8 and 9), you need to be looking for a job, aged 19, unemployed and claiming Job Seekers Allowance, Work Related Employment Support Allowance (day one unemployed) or on Income Support. Our maths and English qualifications are also FREE providing you are aged 19 or over and do not have a grade C or above. Helping You Into Work Do you want to learn new skills matched to the local job market to help you find work in your area? If the answer is yes, then we have several courses here at Middlesbrough College which could be just right for you. Our short Helping You Into Work courses will give you both a recognised qualification and a competitive edge when applying for jobs. You will learn new skills, update your knowledge and increase your confidence. This course will teach you skills in adult social care and will support you to gain employment in the health and social care sector. The course covers communication, record keeping and handling information, equality, diversity and inclusion. It looks at the person centred approach in adult social care settings along with the role of the social care work and personal development in adult social care.

This course will teach you every day first aid skills which are invaluable when accidents happen in a work environment or when you are out and about. Adult Traineeships Have you thought about doing an apprenticeship but don’t have the right qualifications or are struggling to find an employer? Why not sign up to a free Adult Traineeships to help you get on the right track to an apprenticeship. An Adult Traineeship, like an apprenticeship, offers you the chance to come into College and do a course which is a mix of education and training and is perfect for anyone aged 19-23 who has not yet achieved a full Level 2 qualification. We offer Adult Traineeships in • • • • • • •

Combining key elements including work preparation training, English and maths (for those who need it), and a high quality work experience placement, an Adult Traineeship is the perfect stepping stone to get on track for an apprenticeship. Adult Traineeships are generally set at 24 working hours per week (but can vary) and are unpaid, however can be completed in a range of subjects, allowing learners to progress onto an apprenticeship or employment.
