Welcome

to issue 7 of the College newsletter With courses at every level and covering every sector, we hope that this newsletter gives you a flavour as to the course and career options open to you in a range of sectors as well as an insight into how we prepare our students for their next steps, whether that be an apprenticeship, employment, university or self employment. The world of education is changing at a quicker pace than ever before, with reforms being felt all the way through our education system. In this edition we hope to explain these reforms as simply as possible as well as giving you an insight into how we are responding to the changes impacting on school leavers. Last Summer, the Department for Education launched a new suite of performance measures for the College sector, based on measuring the ‘progress made’ from each student’s starting point and the satisfaction levels of both students and employers. Whilst the Government is continuing to drive up expectations of performance right across the education landscape, we are pleased to find ourselves at the top of these performance tables, when compared to all the General Further Education Colleges across the Tees Valley. As proud as we are to be excelling in academic achievements, college life isn’t just all about study, and we hope to give you a flavour of the trips, visit, sporting opportunities and community work that our students take part in each year. We pride ourselves on developing the ‘whole person’ and providing our students with skills and experiences which will stand them in good stead for the rest of their lives. With over 300 full-time courses, over 100 types of apprenticeships plus our adult provision on offer, making a choice can be difficult at any age. To talk to an independent careers advisor or any of our course tutors, feel free to pop along to our next Open Event on Tuesday 25th April 2017. We ‘d love to meet you. 2

FEATURE ARTICLE

Masterful make-up and hair creations make students champions Magnificent make-up and dazzling hairdressing saw students crowned regional champions, for the second year in a row. Hair and Media Makeup students wowed judges at the hotly-contested annual Association of Hairdressers and Therapists (AHT) Regional Competition recently.

The skilled youngsters made a splash at Gateshead Federation Brewery with their intricate make-up and hairdressing work across a series of categories designed to put their artistry and technique to the test. Their efforts earned them “The Best College 2017” trophy plaque, and a chance to compete on the national stage next month, at Blackpool Winter Gardens. Around 14 students representing Middlesbrough College’s expert Hair and Media Make-up department tackled challenging, timed briefs using hairdressing and make-up to stunning effect. Gender transformation, vintage Hollywood and fantasy worlds were among the themes presented to them in the briefs. Heather Ferguson, Level 2 and 3 Hair and Media Make-up Course Leader commented: “This competition is very well contested and the students have done incredibly well to get this recognition, for the second year in a row.” 3

Have you considered a career in Health and Care? Middlesbrough College offers courses in all sector areas and aims to match its curriculum to employer demands and local skills requirements. The graph below highlights the volume of job vacancies available last year. In this month’s newsletter we’ll be focusing on careers in the healthcare industry which was by far the biggest employer in the Tees Valley in 2016 recruiting 6,222 staff. This is a trend that is set to continue, as an aging population means that the human health and social work activities sector will experience the most growth over the coming years with around 319,326 or 23% of all the new jobs that will be created by 2022. The Government has pledged an extra £2bn in its spring statement, which will also pave ways for job openings in the sector. A study by City & Guilds measured student aspirations, compared to the realities of the current job market in health and social work. It found that the aspirations of young people wanting to find employment in roles including care work and nursing did not meet the future demand. This has the potential to lead to skills gaps in the economy if not enough young people are training for careers where there is a demand for jobs. At Middlesbrough College, we offer a range of full and part time health and care programmes designed to prepare students for future employment. Our teaching staff have a wealth of experience and our mock NHS health ward is the perfect setting to learn the skills required by industry. We have excellent employer links and many of our students complete work placements alongside their studies to help boost their CV and readiness for work.

GET FREE, IMPARTIAL CAREERS ADVICE AT MIDDLESBROUGH COLLEGE! In order to ensure that young people are given a realistic view of the jobs market in their local area and across the country, careers advice must be independent, based on accurate local labour market information, and have strong links to business. Young people and their parents need to be made aware of the types of jobs that are available across the UK both now and in the future so that they can make informed choices that help them progress into a sustainable career. At Middlesbrough College, we have a dedicated Careers Team who can offer young people free, impartial advice on the post16 options available to them. There is a common misconception that students are required to stay in their schools sixth form until they are 18; however they also have the option to pursue a vocational course, an A Level, an apprenticeship or even a traineeship. All of these options are offered at Middlesbrough College. Young people of all starting points need to be made aware of all the educational pathways available to them to get to their chosen career, and it is important that if they are unsure of which route is right for them, they seek expert careers advice.

POLICY UPDATE Education and skills reforms made simple! The education system as we know it is changing and it is important that as a College we are responsive to these new Government initiatives. From primary education right the way through to university study, the Government is reviewing the way in which education providers operate and students are assessed.

PRIMARY EDUCATION Area for improvement

The Government solution

The Government wants primary aged children to have a stronger grounding in basic subjects including literacy, spelling, grammar, punctuation and numeracy before moving into secondary school.

Key Stage 2 Standard Attainment Tests (SATS) have been reformed to increase the standards required of year 6 pupils before they leave primary school.

SECONDARY EDUCATION Area for improvement

The Government solution

The GCSE national league tables show an improving trend in education levels of school leavers year on year, and the Government would like to build on this success by continuing to increase standards.

The Government is in the process of reforming the GCSE. There will be new, more demanding content, which has been developed by Government and the exam boards. Reforms will continue for the next few years, all the way up to 2020. A new grading scale of 9 to 1 is being introduced, with 9 being the top grade. This will allow greater differentiation between students and will help distinguish the new GCSEs from previous versions. The standards required to achieve the new grade C (which will be phased in starting off as a grade 4 and most likely moving to a grade 5 over time) is expected to be higher than currently required to achieve a grade C.

School league tables have resulted in many schools replacing traditionally challenging subjects like chemistry, physics and biology in favour of single, double and triple science, which do not generally prepare students as well for an A Level or vocational course.

School league tables have been reformed meaning that core subjects such as English, maths and science will have a bigger impact on the schools results.

A small minority of students are becoming disengaged in the school system midway through their studies and there is often no alternative provider for them.

The Government is considering proposals to reinstate grammar schools and increase the number of technical school alternatives (UTCs) for students aged 14+.

FURTHER EDUCATION Area for improvement

The Government solution

Middlesbrough College response

The Government would like to see more students continuing to study English and maths after the age of 16.

All students are now required to re-sit their English and maths after the age of 16 if they do not achieve a grade C at school, to raise the number of young people achieving a grade C in these key subjects and improving their employment prospects as a result. 2015/16 was the first year that all grade D students who left school had to re-sit both English and maths GCSE.

Middlesbrough College performed better than the national average for maths resits and just below the national average for English in this first pilot year. This year, (2016/17) our attendance rates for both subjects has improved to well above national rates and we are confident that we will see significant improvements once again this year.

Similarly to schools, many colleges have dropped more challenging courses in favour of those which would improve their published results.

The Government is currently in the process of adapting all college performance measures and are seeking to implement ‘progress measures’ similar to those recently adopted in schools. The government has not yet adapted these measures to take into account a STEM bias, though this is likely to happen given the changes happening in school performance measures.

Middlesbrough College adapted its offer to include a stronger STEM bias and has in the last five years doubled the proportion of students studying Government priority subjects over this period. Our progression outcomes have significantly improved as a result and we are currently working with Government to ensure that performance measures are weighted for these high priority subjects in future. We continue to be above national rates for all provision types.

The Government would like vocational education to be of a higher standard than currently and to be valued by parents as a genuine alternative to A Levels.

A post 16 skills plan is in draft form which will reduce the number of vocational options available post 16 and change the assessment methods to include more exams and fewer competency based assessments.

Middlesbrough College offers vocational programmes alongside A Levels for those who are clear what career route they wish to take but want to maximise their university entry points and / or impress an employer with their learning capacity.

The Government would like to see more employers investing in training (the UK currently is at an all-time low for employers investing in staff training and apprenticeships).

A new Apprenticeship Levy is due for launch this April, which is aimed at encouraging employers to take more ownership in training their existing and new staff. The Levy system will in effect place a tax bill on large employers, which they can only ‘get back’ if they utilise the money to train staff. The government hopes that this will encourage more employers to take on apprentices and fulfil their election commitment of 3 million apprentices by the next parliament.

Middlesbrough College has rebranded its employer facing arm – Northern Skills Group – following its acquisition of NECC Training. This training arm now serves over 2000 employers and trains over 2000 apprentices across a wide range of sectors. We are working closely with local employers to advise them on how best to utilise their Apprenticeship Levy and on the benefits of apprentices to their business and productivity.

Area for improvement

The Government solution

Middlesbrough College response

The UK currently produces more graduates than almost any country in the world (2nd only to Iceland), but also has high levels of student debt, high levels of graduate underemployment (i.e. where graduates are not employed in graduate jobs) and a low ratio of student loans being repaid (due to relatively low graduate salary levels).

The government has opened up the HE market to allow new entrants – in a bid to make the degree offer more efficient. For example, they are encouraging more cost effective ways of obtaining a degree. This includes apprenticeship degree programmes, private universities offering two year degrees and online degrees, as well as encouraging colleges to offer more cost effective courses at degree level.

Middlesbrough College offer a range of degree level programmes including 2 year Foundation Degrees and Higher Apprenticeships. These are an alternative to university study, have a stronger focus on work experience, can be completed in a shorter time frame and are more competitively priced.

QUALITY UPDATE Middlesbrough College tops new Department for Education performance tables! Last summer, the Department for Education launched a new suite of performance measures for the college sector, based on measuring the ‘progress made’ from each student’s starting point and the satisfaction levels of both students and employers. This supplements the existing measures which look at how many students remain on their course until the end, and of these, how many achieve their qualification (called achievement measures).

Whilst the Government is continuing to drive up expectations of performance right across the education landscape, we are pleased to find ourselves at the top of these new performance tables, when compared to all the General Further Education Colleges across the Tees Valley. Our achievement measures also remain above the national average in all areas too!

SUPPORTING SCHOOLS

Supporting schools across the Tees Valley Here at Middlesbrough College, we pride ourselves on working closely with schools from across the Tees Valley to provide information on the options available to school leavers. We actively work with year 9, 10 and 11 to deliver information on the three stands of curriculum available to post 16 learners including A Levels, vocational courses and apprenticeships. Alongside attending career events across the region, our Schools Team work with teaching staff at schools across the academic year covering a range of activities designed to challenge, stretch and motivate students, and encourage them to research all of the options available to them. This includes: • Delivering presentations and school talks covering a range of topics such as the importance of GCSEs, careers in STEM, understanding the apprenticeship process and much more

Information for Parents

As a parent you know that this is a crucial time for your son or daughter when making decisions for their future career paths and deciding where and what to study. Education after 16 doesn’t just mean staying at school or sixth form full-time; your child can stay at school, go to college, or take up an apprenticeship. What and where your child chooses to study upon leaving school is one of the biggest choices they will have to make, and we know that you will play an important role in this decision.

FAQs Why does my child have to continue with their English and maths? English and maths at GCSE A*-C are essential qualifications for progression within further education and to HE and employment. All students will continue to study English and maths if they do not hold a GCSE at grade C or above. Dependent on your child’s school grades, this will either be a GCSE re-examination, or Functional Skills. Email. courseinfo@mbro.ac.uk Web. www.mbro.ac.uk

• Arranging college tours to showcase the diverse range of learning facilities on offer to students at Middlesbrough College • Attending school drop-in sessions during lunch times, on a morning or at parent evenings to allow students to ask questions relating to their post16 options • Supporting year 11 students in application clinics • Arranging GCSE revision classes in College and putting on taster sessions Our aim is to place the right student on the right course whilst offering valuable, worthwhile student experience that leads to a successful outcome upon completion. Our goal is to make student transitions from school to further education as comfortable as possible by providing support and guidance on the full range of options available.

How does Middlesbrough College differ from my child’s school sixth form? Middlesbrough College offers a different environment to a school sixth form. Your child will learn in a mature environment developing their confidence and independence for university study or future employment. They will also have the freedom to explore a wider range of different post 16 options ensuring that they find a course to suit their abilities and career aspirations.

When should my child apply to college? We would recommend that they apply as soon as they feel happy with their preferred course to ensure that they are guaranteed a place. On completion of your child’s application, they will be contacted to arrange an interview date. If your child changes their mind about the chosen course midway through the year, don’t worry. Ask them to contact the admissions department who will invite them to an additional interview with their new course area.

Students raise the bar for a head start in legal careers

A LEVELS

Students have been gaining first-hand experience of life as a barrister thanks to mini-pupillages at Old Court Chambers. Both BTEC Law and A Level students were invited to join practicing barristers as they attend court, meet clients and solve complex legal issues. Christopher Wood, a barrister at Old Court Chambers and research fellow at Northumbria University, leads some of the mini pupillage’s. He said: “The partnership with Middlesbrough College is about giving students the chance to gain valuable insights they can draw on in their learning. We like to make sure students experience the full range of activities that barristers do – from meeting clients to representing them in court.” Former Middlesbrough College student Uthman El-Dharrat completed the mini law pupillage in March 2016, and is now studying law at university.

“I learned and saw so much throughout the pupillage. From seeing the barristers in the court robing room to being in a hearing was great experience.”

A LEVELS Thinking of progressing to university?

1. Get relevant work experience

A Levels have long been regarded as the traditional stepping stone to higher education! Focusing on three or four subjects across a two year period, they are very exam focused and there is an emphasis on independent study, helping to bridge the gap between school and university.

Universities love this. Getting work experience that’s related to the course you’re applying for shows them you’re serious about it, have drive and are self-motivated. Middlesbrough College has developed excellent relationships with local, regional and national employers and will work with you to find an employer that can provide quality and relevant work experience during your time as a student.

For ambitious students planning to progress to a Russell Group University, Middlesbrough College’s sixth form has a dedicated Academic & Pastoral Mentor who can support with UCAS applications and exam preparation across the year. There are also a number of heavily subsidised and often free university trips throughout the year to institutions across the country such as Durham University, University of Leeds, London School of Economics and St Andrew’s, where students can attend Open Days and find a course fit for their aspirations.

Top tips for boosting your UCAS application! It’s important to remember whilst at College that if your goal is to get into uni, you might need more than just good grades! You’ll be competing with students across the country who may have the same expected grades so a jam-packed UCAS application will help you stand out from the crowd!

The Outdoor Sports Club offers A Level students the opportunity to get involved in a range of activities outside the classroom.

2. Join a club or society Middlesbrough College has loads of activities you can get involved with including our ambassador scheme and student council, all of which will look great on a uni application. If you join College wanting to start a new club, where you can meet like minded individuals, who share your interests, you can contact our Sabbatical Officer who will support you to set this up. Clubs and societies can be run during the common enrichment slots so that all students can access them.

3. Get awarded Think you have an award winning talent? Why not show it off! The College holds a range of competitions for students to get involved with across the year ranging from photography and creative writing to sporting academies! You could even sign up to the Duke of Edinburgh Award whilst in College. We offer the bronze, silver and gold scheme meaning that students who have completed a previous Award in school can advance to the higher level whilst at College.

4. Do something different Whether it’s learning a new sport, pursuing a hobby or completing a milestone! Doing something outside of your comfort zone is a great way of meeting new people and would look great on your application. From archery to rockclimbing, Middlesbrough College has a range of enrichment opportunities for you to get involved with outside of the classroom.

Many of our A Level and BTEC students successfully secured a place at a Russell Group Institution in 2016. This group of world-class universities all share a common ethos of delivering outstanding teaching and learning experiences with their students. Email. courseinfo@mbro.ac.uk Web. www.mbro.ac.uk

VOCATIONAL COURSES Bridge the skills gap with construction From project managing a multimillion pound commercial high rise, to contributing to the regeneration of a city centre; careers in construction can be far more varied than people often believe! The Government’s ‘National Infrastructure Plan for Skills’ highlighted that the UK will need 150,000 more construction engineers and 250,000 more construction workers by 2020. This is to meet the demand of a pipeline of £411 billion planned public and private construction projects that include HS2 and the extension of Heathrow. Far too few young people are currently entering the sector, a situation worsened by the fact that almost 400,000 current employees are expected to retire over the next decade. This means that the construction industry currently offers fantastic opportunities. With demand far outweighing supply, salaries are flourishing; according to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), workers in construction saw their wages increase by more than 6% in 2015 - a growth rate three times larger than the rest of the workforce.

Students have access to a range of on-site trade areas including our sustainable construction yard. This realistic work environment gives students practical experience in constructing a single story dwelling which is built from foundations up to roof.

VOCATIONAL COURSES Government goals are transforming the Childcare sector CHILDCARE

If you want to work with children, now is a really good time to start your career. Improving child care provision is high on the Government’s list of priorities as their aim to offer free childcare to more working families has created thousands of new jobs. Completing a work placement is a crucial element of our childcare courses. It means you can apply classroom learning in a real work environment and gain first-hand knowledge in a child’s development. It also allows you to develop a range of transferable skills such as communication, team work and problem solving giving you a head start in the jobs race. Our dedicated Placement Co-ordinator works with child care facilities across Teesside including nurseries, schools, children’s homes, crèches, play schemes, playgroups, health centres and family centres. During a typical week on placement you may find yourself getting involved in planning educational play activities, as well as playing alongside children and encouraging them to participate. It gives you an excellent opportunity to obtain hands on experience and observe educators already working in the early childhood industry. It will also give you the chance to experience what it is like to work in an early childhood setting. The most important qualities you’ll need to take on your placement are a caring nature and a genuine interest in children and their development.

APPRENTICESHIPS

Interested in an apprenticeship but still in school? If you are interested in finding a job straight away once you’ve left school, an apprenticeship could be perfect for you. Combining practical skills in the workplace with theoretical study at College you’ll gain a nationally recognised qualification whilst earning a salary at the same time! Northern Skills Group, Middlesbrough College’s apprenticeship and training company, offers a range of apprenticeship programmes across the North ranging from hairdressing to engineering. They’re the perfect opportunity to get your foot in the door of your chosen industry, and we work with some of the region’s top employers to give the best opportunities for your future.

You can register your interest in pursuing an apprenticeship at www.northernskills.co.uk but it’s important to remember that the application process is very different to how you’d apply to a course at college. In order to secure an apprenticeship, you need to find an employer willing to take you on. We’d recommend that you get into the habit of checking Northern Skills Group’s apprenticeship vacancies page for the latest jobs coming up in your area. Alternatively, if you know a local business that would be willing to employ you as an apprentice ask them to call 03453 40 40 40 and we’ll do the rest! To keep your options open, we’d recommend that you also apply for a full time course at Middlesbrough College so that if you are unable to find an employer by September, you can gain a basic understanding of the industry you will be working in as part of your technical certificate. You can continue to search for an apprenticeship once you’ve started a course, and once an employer becomes available then fasttrack onto your chosen apprenticeship programme midway through the full time course. You can browse all of our full time courses at www.mbro.ac.uk or check out our course guide for further information.

TIMELY APPRENTICESHIP ACHIEVEMENT RATE On average, Northern Skills Group apprentices complete their qualifications faster than the national average.

Understanding the Advanced Learner Loan

19+

If you’re aged 19 or over, and are thinking about further education or training, you might qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan. It’s easy to apply and you won’t have to pay anything back until you’re earning over £21,000 a year.

£21,000 24

The loan can be taken out to cover the fees of a range of level 3 and 4 courses at Middlesbrough College, including the Access to Higher Education Diploma. It isn’t based on your household income, there are no credit checks, and better still, if you get a loan to study an Access to Higher Education course then go on to complete a Higher Education course, your Advanced Learner Loan repayments will be written off. The loan is paid directly to the college for the cost of your course tuition fees so you don't have to pay anything up front to study. You don't have to borrow the full amount available - you can pay for some of the course yourself if you prefer. The minimum amount available is £300.

The competition season started in January with a trip to the University of Cumbria for the Milano Team Regional Finals. Our under 19 mixed and under 19 women’s teams were victorious, achieving gold in both categories. The National Milano Team finals in Stoke on Trent in March was a fantastic experience and the under 19 mixed team did not disappoint securing a national silver medal.

Middlesbrough College has a range of superb Sporting Academies designed for 16-19 year olds which operate professionally to develop sporting excellence, nurture natural talent and aid personal development. You must be enrolled on a full-time course at Middlesbrough College to be eligible to apply for an academy place and if you are successful in securing a place, take part in a total of 9 hours coaching, training and fixtures per week. These academies provide an excellent opportunity for students to develop their skills and compete at the highest levels whilst studying their academic course. Middlesbrough College awards Elite Sports Scholarships to those students who excel at their chosen sport. Those awarded Elite Scholarships receive a free iPad or laptop, free sports academy training kit, free gym membership, free physiotherapy and massage, assistance with costs for representing the Sports Academies and free or subsidised transport to and from the College. 26

For the second qualifying event in February the team travelled to Birtley for the regional tumbling and acrobatics finals. The under 19 women’s pair won their category and secured themselves a place at nationals, as did the acrobatic group! In the tumbling sections the gymnasts secured national places in both events entered, under 19 women’s and under 19 men’s. The third qualifying event in March was held in Hartlepool for the Floor and Vault Regional Finals. The team was weakened due to gymnasts involved in course assessments, but the girls remained focussed and the under 19 women’s team were victorious taking the gold in a closely fought competition. A hat-trick of regional titles secured our national final places in all events available to the gymnasts this academic year.

1. Think about what you post Don’t post anything you would be embarrassed for certain others to see! This includes your family, friends, future employers or college/university admissions department. Once something goes online it is impossible to remove.

2. Be considerate of others when posting Ask for your friend’s permission before uploading a photo of them and if someone asks for their tag to be removed, do so! Imagine you were in their shoes.

3. Don’t vent or complain Employers, schools and colleagues have access to social media and they are looking. Is that spiteful comment worth losing a great opportunity over?

4. Paint a positive image of yourself Don’t wait until you are applying for jobs to create a great social presence online. Sites such as LinkedIn and Twitter are a great way of connecting with future employers and sharing all the great work you’ve got up to/ideas you have.

5. Keep passwords private

Claire McArthur reviewed Mid dlesbrough College 5* “My husband and I attended your Open Day with our son, Charlie. Having two olde r sons, who have already been through sixth form studies and university, we have seen the ben efits and pitfalls of continuing an education thro ugh conventional study routes that take them dire ctly from school to an attached school based sixth form. Charlie’s particular interest in sport, and his aim of becoming a PE teacher, we were disappo inted to find out that the subject he most wanted to study was not available to him at his school sixth form. This has lead us to searching out a study route that will best suit Charlie’s needs. The Sports Science 2 year BTEC course seemed idea l. Having had no previous contact with Middles brough College, we did not know what to expect whe n we visited on Saturday. However, had we had high expectations, they would certainly have bee n exceeded. From the outset being greeted so war mly as we entered the building to the attention give n to us as we met staff from the Sports Science Department we were impressed with the professiona lism, knowledge and help they showed us. Charlie has applied to study at Middlesbrough College, and my husband and I are delighted, feeling utterly confident in your staff in enabling him to meet his potential.”

Don’t share your password even with friends. It’s hard to imagine, but friendships change and you don’t want to be impersonated by anyone. Pick a password you can remember but no one else can guess. 30
