FEATURE ARTICLE
EMPLOYERS’ CHANCE TO VOICE SKILLS NEEDS Senior staff from firms across different sectors attended an industrial summit at Middlesbrough College where they gave their views on skills challenges. The information will be used by the College to shape its five-year strategy to 2023. Delegates heard from Middlesbrough College’s principal and chief executive Zoe Lewis about the College’s mission to enhance the region’s economic and social prosperity by supporting employers’ needs.
Zoe Lewis explained: “We’re always in dialogue with employers to make sure our training and learning fits their needs. Five years ago we asked our partners in the business community what they needed, and we delivered. Their views helped us plan our STEM strategy, which led to investments in our STEM Centre, the expansion of our A Level centre, MC6, the development of a Health and Care ward and investment in our apprenticeship programmes. Now it’s time to update our strategy and renew our contract with regional businesses.”
Help shape our future As we approach the end of 2017, we also approach the end of our current five year strategic plan. We therefore thought it would be a good time to look back and share what we have achieved over this period, and more importantly to look ahead to the future to set our priorities for the next five years. Having consulted with employers, we would now like to hear from the public and our prospective students.
Middlesbrough College is your local education and training provider and we are keen to hear your views on our emerging strategic plan. Please have a read on the following pages, to find out what we have achieved over the last 5 years and what we’d like to achieve going forward. Please share your thoughts by emailing Claire Harrison at c.harrison@mbro.ac.uk to help shape your local college.

POLICY UPDATE
AN AFFORDABLE ROUTE INTO UNIVERSITY STUDY Many university degrees now have the option for students to study an initial foundation, or qualifying year, as the first year of study across a four-year programme (frequently referred to as year 0). This widens participation within higher education, as individuals who don’t meet the standard entry requirements for the course can build up their basic skills through an additional year of study. It can be a costly venture however, as most universities are charging £9k+ per year of study, leaving students with tuition fee debts of over £36k at the end of their four years before maintenance loan and interest is added. If you aspire to progress to university, but don’t meet the standard entry criteria, there are other more cost effective options available to you. Studied across 1 year, a Level 3 Access Diploma is designed for those without traditional qualifications who are looking to progress to university education. If you are aged 19-23 and this is your first full Level 3 course then the course will be free! If you are 24 or over on the start date of the course, you will have to pay fees, but you will be able to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to cover these costs.
This is easy to apply for, not means tested and the repayments only start when you are earning over £21,000. An Access Diploma costs approximately £3k which is considerably cheaper than an additional year at university. Better still, if you progress to university and successfully complete your degree, the loan is not repayable! Middlesbrough College is the largest provider of Access Diplomas in the North East and has 580 students on 15 Access courses. Making the transition into higher education more manageable, the courses will develop transferable skills such as academic writing, whilst allowing you to develop specialist knowledge in your chosen subject. The diplomas are delivered across 2-3 days of the week with evening classes available in certain subjects such as health.
“I wanted to progress my career to the next level and found an Access Diploma was the best route to get to university. The course is amazing and I feel over prepared to start my degree in engineering at Newcastle University.” Robert Herlingshaw former Access to Engineering student

HIGHER EDUCATION
OUR NEW PARTNER OF EXCELLENCE A ground breaking partnership between Middlesbrough College and The Open University will bring affordable, jobfocused degree study to students across the Tees Valley. The Open University is the UK’s largest university and its courses are underpinned by world-leading research. Zoe Lewis, Middlesbrough College’s Principal and Chief Executive explained: “The partnership means we can provide courses that are better suited to the needs of students – that means more contact time with tutors, more flexible learning hours and better value for money. Many students are put off university by high fees, and left wondering what they’re paying for when teaching hours are so few. We’ll address that and offer high-quality, cost-effective courses that enhance employability prospects.”

CAREERS IN THE TEES VALLEY
CYBER SECURITY SKILLS A PRIORITY FOR UK GOVERNMENT
The UK requires more talented and qualified cyber security professionals. The Government will act now to plug the growing gap between demand and supply for key cyber security roles, and inject renewed vigour into this area of education and training. National Cyber Strategy – 2017
Information and communication technologies have evolved over the last two decades and are now integrated into virtually every aspect of our lives. With the Apple Watch leading the way in wearable technology and Amazon’s Echo device making smart speakers commonplace in most households; the UK is now a digitalised society. This boom in digital tech in the UK means that we need to secure our technology, data and networks from the numerous threats within cybercrime. Cyber-attacks are growing more frequent, sophisticated and damaging when they succeed, with recent attacks on large organisations such as the NHS attracting national attention. This has prompted the government to produce a five-year National Cyber Strategy. This includes an investment of £1.9 billion in the defence of technological systems and infrastructure, as well as supporting education providers in training individuals with the correct skills to address these challenges. 10
This skills gap represents a national issue that needs to be resolved, as it is estimated that there could be 3 million unfilled jobs in the cyber security industry by 2021. This offers great opportunities for young people with a passion for digital technology, but who may not have considered this career route. At Middlesbrough College, our new Level 3 Cyber Security course is unique to the Tees Valley, and teaches school leavers the fundamental knowledge of information security. This includes data analysis and encryption, ethical hacking and risk management. The course will develop your specialist skills in how to manage cyber risks giving you a head start in the job-race and preparing you for higher level study or an apprenticeship in industry. CAREERS IN THE TEES VALLEY
GET FREE, IMPARTIAL CAREERS ADVICE AT MIDDLESBROUGH COLLEGE In order to ensure that young people are given a realistic view of the jobs market in their local area and across the country, careers advice must be independent, based on accurate local labour market information, and have strong links to business. Young people and their parents need to be made aware of the types of jobs that are available across the UK both now and in the future so that they can make informed choices that help them progress into a sustainable career. At Middlesbrough College, we have a dedicated Careers Team who can offer young people free, impartial advice on the post16 options available to them. There is a common misconception that students are required to stay in their school sixth form until they are 18; however they also have the option to pursue a vocational course, an A Level, an apprenticeship or even a pre-apprenticeship. All of these options are offered at Middlesbrough College. Young people of all starting points need to be made aware of all the educational pathways available to them to get to their chosen career, and it is important that if they are unsure of which route is right for them, they seek expert careers advice.
Unsure of the careers your chosen course can lead to? Visit mbro.emsicareercoach.co.uk for the latest labour market information in the Tees Valley.

OPEN PLAN SOCIAL SPACES
A Safer LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
Our open plan ‘street’ is the central point of the College with easy access to our classrooms and facilities. The new installation of ‘picnic style’ seating, means that students have an area in which to socialise or study between lessons. There is an array of canteens to choose from for students across the campus, and our new cybercafé gives students a quiet space to work or surf the web during their lunch hour. A Level students have dedicated study and social spaces in our sixth form centre, MC6. This includes a lounge area with comfortable sofas and a study space with the latest iMac computers for budding designers and photographers.
A recent addition to our £100m campus includes our new access control barriers at the main entry points to the College campus. Staff and students are able to swipe in and out of the building easily using their lanyards, creating a safer, more secure learning environment. The new town centre reception area means that visitors to the College are immediately greeted and have a comfortable seating area when waiting to be collected.

STUDENT SUCCESS! Amelia Dixon Former Outwood Academy Bydales student Amelia can’t wait to get started on her Animal Science degree at Newcastle University, having achieved D*,D* in Applied Science. From physiology to forensics, she was drawn to the course due to the variance of science related modules, allowing her to gain a wide range of skills before honing on her preferred career route.
“I was drawn to the College due to its independent learning environment and the support that was available to students applying to university. I feel like both my tutors and the science facilities prepared me to start my degree.”
Vinny Ray Vinny has earned himself an unconditional offer to study Sports Journalism at UCFB Manchester following his time at Middlesbrough College. The former St Patrick’s Catholic College student was given plenty of opportunities to enhance his UCAS application. This included a recent trip to Iceland organised as part of his geography studies, and the chance to set up an under-18 player football team – something not currently on offer from other colleges. Vinny, along with a classmate, organised everything from booking the College astroturf each week, to recruiting players to take part who may have previously not got into professional sporting clubs.
“I was drawn to MC6 and its campus as it reminded me of a mini university environment. You’re given more freedom to work independently, and your tutors treat you like an adult and are always on hand to provide support when you need them.”

TEESSIDE TEACHER MAKES INTERNATIONAL WAVES Dr Richard Spencer, an A Level biology teacher and Head of Science at MC6, was one of ten finalists in the Varkey Foundation’s Global Teacher Prize. Now, as part of the Erasmus+ Project, Richard recently hosted 20 European teachers from nine different countries, including Estonia, Greece and the Netherlands. He is working with the teachers to develop innovative teaching and learning resources for design, science, technology, engineering and maths (designSTEM) subjects.
He explained: “We’re using our collective expertise – and experience from our home countries – to build a collection of learning resources for teachers across Europe. Middlesbrough College has a STEM specialism so I’m excited to share some of our thinking with the group.” All our teachers are A Level specialists and only teach Level 3 programmes. Many have industry backgrounds, meaning they can help you prepare for the world of work. Many of our A Level and BTEC students successfully secured a place at a Russell Group Institution in 2017. This group of world-class universities all share a common ethos of delivering outstanding teaching and learning experiences with their students. If you join Middlesbrough College’s Sixth Form centre, you can access at least three supported entry schemes for university, which lead to lower UCAS offers from top universities. We also have a dedicated ‘Russell Group’ Co-ordinator to provide support with application and university preparation.

Macy never misses a deadline, is always approachable and is on track to achieve double distinction star – the highest accolade on the course. Macy intends to progress onto Sports Therapy at university level next year.
Macy recently won the motivational student of the year award at the College’s annual student award presentation.
FIRE SAFETY TRAINING AT THE AIRPORT Aviation Operations students paid a visit to Durham Tees Valley Airport’s International Fire Training Centre as part of their health, safety and operations assessment. The students were given a full tour of the drill ground and visited the on-site Airbus 380 mock fuselage. Here, they were able to observe fire crew trainees from Toulous demonstrating a range of aviation fire scenarios including an evacuation. The final training really tested our student’s resilience and ability to work as a team, as they performed an evacuation of the aircraft in smoke and noise conditions, some acting as crew and others as passengers. Some students really got into character here, excelling in their acting skills as nervous, overwhelmed airline passengers! The hair and beauty academy within the College is run by an experienced salon manager with industry experience. Following the growth in popularity of the services, several former students have been taken on as members of the staff to deliver high end services alongside our Level 3 students. PANTO SEASON TAKES TO THE HIGH SEAS Armed with a crutch and a parrot on his back, Josh Omri has been cast alongside classmate Cameron Nunn, as Long John Silver in Middlesbrough College’s production of Treasure Island. This year’s panto has been given a Teesside twist with plenty of local phrases and jokes, and features some chart-topping pop and rock tunes. Josh is joined by Niamh Casey-Burnett, 17, who is playing damsel-in-distress, Joanna, and Paul Garbutt, 17, who is playing her miserable father, Papa Hawkins.
Students on Performing and Productions Arts courses are involved in 11 productions throughout the year; however the College pantomime is always where we have the most fun. “It’s an incredibly talented cast and production team. From our production arts students who work on the staging, lighting and sound to our musical theatre students, actors and dancers who perform on the night – everyone is working flat out to make the show a complete success.”
Paul said: “Since applying to Middlesbrough College, I have been given so many opportunities to get involved in theatrical productions. My tutors are fantastic and have so much industry knowledge; having trained at stage school and gone onto perform in the West End.“ Claire Teesdale, theatre manager and visual and performing arts lecturer, added: “Staging performances such as these give our students industry experience and knowledge of professional conduct. APPRENTICESHIPS
INTERESTED IN AN APPRENTICESHIP BUT STILL AT SCHOOL? If you are interested in finding a job straight away once you’ve left school, an apprenticeship could be perfect for you. Combining practical skills in the workplace with theoretical study at College, you’ll gain a nationally recognised qualification whilst earning a salary at the same time! Northern Skills Group, Middlesbrough College’s apprenticeship and training company, offers a range of apprenticeship programmes across the North. It’s important to remember that the application process is very different to how you’d apply to a course at college. In order to secure an apprenticeship, you need to find an employer willing to take you on.
You can find all of our apprenticeship programmes, check out whose hiring and sign up to our monthly vacancy email bulletin at www.northernskills.co.uk. Alternatively, if you know a local business that would be willing to employ you as an apprentice, ask them to call 03453 40 40 40 and we’ll do the rest! To keep your options open, we’d recommend that you also apply for a full time course at Middlesbrough College so that if you are unable to find an employer by September, you can gain a basic understanding of the industry you will be working in as part of your technical certificate. You can continue to search for an apprenticeship once you’ve started a course, and once an employer becomes available, fasttrack onto your chosen apprenticeship programme midway through the full time course. You can browse all of our full time courses at www.mbro.ac.uk or check out our course guide for further information.
