Who are they for?
Training an apprentice is a great way to mould individuals into the perfect employee for your business.
Apprenticeships can be completed by existing staff who want to recognise and develop their skills, or by someone who has joined the organisation in an apprenticeship role.
Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes designed to industry standards and more specifically, around the needs of employers leading to nationally recognised qualifications. There are three levels of Apprenticeship: Level 2 - Intermediate Level Apprenticeship (GCSE) Level 3 - Advanced Level Apprenticeship (A Level) Level 4, 5 & 6 - Higher Level Apprenticeship (Up to degree level) All apprenticeships include on-the-job competence and skills training along with underpinning theoretical knowledge and essential work skills including communication, team work, numeracy and IT. Depending on the learner’s previous qualifications, they will also continue to study English, maths and ICT. Apprentice training is primarily delivered in the workplace and offers minimum disruption to your business. The training programme is designed to your specific requirements and learning is flexible to fit around your organisation.

We can also help you to recruit new apprentices, our recruitment service is completely free of charge. Our dedicated apprenticeship team regularly recruit and source skilled students onto apprenticeship frameworks as a natural continuation from their studies. An initial screening process is carried out, followed by an assessment, to ensure the candidates we put forward for your vacancy are the most beneficial for your organisation. Apprenticeships are available for anyone over the age of 16; there is no upper age limit. Your apprentice must be given a contract of employment and be employed for a minimum of 30 hours a week.

Working with Northern Skills Group We offer fantastic facilities, expert tuition and dedicated support to help you source the right apprentice and the right training programme. Your apprentice will be allocated a personal Training Adviser to support them throughout their training and to help them achieve their qualification. Our Training Advisers have been chosen for their expertise and industry background and provide a responsive service for both employers and learners. Northern Skills Group has two large, modern training salons as part of the Francesco’s Hair and Beauty Academy situated
at the Middlesbrough College campus where apprentices can access the latest cutting and styling equipment as part of their framework. Francesco’s Hair and Beauty Academy is open to the public and sells the latest hair and beauty products in order to improve an apprentices customer service skills and product knowledge. The salons are operated and ran by a commerical manager with industry experience teaching apprentices a range of professional behaviours including client retention and financial targets. We have seven state of the art professional equipped beauty salons, including a commercial spa suite with access to a jacuzzi pool, a sauna with light therapy, a steam room, a monsoon shower and a dry flotation bed. There is also a large nail bar which is the perfect environment for apprentices to train in.
We currently deliver 5 fantastic Apprenticeship Frameworks within the hair and beauty industry Barbering Level: 2 & 3 Start Date: Flexible Duration: Up to 2 years (dependent on skills, experience and scope of job duties) Days and Times: 4 days with your employer and 1 day at College per week Business Benefits: This qualification develops a learner’s ability to creatively cut hair using a combination of barbering techniques. Apprentices will gain the confidence to provide independent hair consultations, and gain knowledge in health and safety and customer service. Dependant on the nature of the business, students will also learn to create a range of facial hair shapes. The Level 3 qualification is designed for more experienced stylists who are looking to develop their skills in specialist areas.
Beauty Therapy Level: 2 Start Date: Flexible Duration: Up to 18 months (dependent on skills, experience and scope of job duties) Days and Times: 4 days with your employer and 1 day at College per week Business Benefits: This qualification allows learners to fulfil salon reception duties, as well as providing a number of makeup, threading, piercing and spa operation services whilst adhering to health and safety procedures. Dependant on the nature of the business, learners will provide skincare treatment, brow and lash enhancement and manicure and pedicure services.
Nail Services Level: 2 & 3 Start Date: Flexible Duration: Up to 18 months (dependent on skills, experience and scope of job duties) Days and Times: 4 days with your employer and 1 day at College per week Business Benefits: This qualification is both practical and theoretical and will cover all aspects of nail enhancements, nail art, airbrush designs, health and safety, client care and detailed anatomy and physiology. Dependant on the nature of the organisation, apprentices will also fulfil salon reception duties, and promote additional services or products to customers. The Level 3 qualification is designed for more experienced nail technicians who are looking to develop their skills in specialist areas.
Beauty Therapy – Massage Level: 3 Start Date: Flexible Duration: Approximately 18 months (dependent on skills, experience and scope of job duties) Days and Times: 4 days with your employer and 1 day at College per week Business Benefits: The qualification covers both the practical and theoretical elements of spa therapy including treatment, health and safety and spa management and finance. Apprentices will cover practical tasks such as body and facial massage, stone therapy and electrical. They will also look at detailed anatomy and physiology. The apprentice may have the opportunity to undertake additional optional qualifications at an additional cost to the learner dependent on the nature of the organisation.
Hairdressing Level: 2 & 3 Start Date: Flexible Duration: Up to 2 years (dependent on skills, experience and scope of job duties) Days and Times: 4 days with your employer and 1 day at College per week Business Benefits: This qualification develops a learner’s ability to creatively cut, colour and style hair using a number of advanced techniques. Apprentices will gain the confidence to provide independent hair consultations, and gain knowledge in health and safety and customer service. Dependant on the nature of the business, students will also learn colour correction, marketing and promotion, reception work, creative colour, blow drying and setting, fashion work and setting creative long hair. The Level 3 qualification is designed for more experienced stylists who are looking to develop their skills in specialist areas.
