Sports Academies All full-time students have the opportunity to join our award-winning sports academies.

Our accomplishments don’t end with our range of courses and facilities! Students aged between 16-19, who are enrolled on a full-time course, have the chance to join a sporting academy alongside their studies. Each academy offers specialist coaching to develop sporting excellence, nurture talent and aid personal development. Launched in 2012 and growing from strength to strength, there are now 7 academies to choose from.

These coaches have all played or coached at the top level in the UK and/or abroad, and can pass their skills and experiences on to students. L3 Sport & Exercise Science There’s so much on offer within campus, and it was a massive bonus that I could join a Sports Academy alongside my course! I’m new to basketball, but I’m loving it. I’ve made loads of new friends and have improved my skills so much already. My coach is so supportive and really moulds the team into working together. Coming to Middlesbrough College was the best decision of my life!

Cricket The Cricket Academy gives players the chance to play competitively whilst making new friends. The Academy offers players the chance to train (using a range of nets, strength & conditioning sessions, therapy and training), earn entry to the winter indoor cricket league and both the AoC indoor and outdoor competitions. Director of Cricket, Andrew Maguire, has coached the Academy to 3 consecutive top 5 finishes at the AoC National Indoor Championships alongside capturing numerous regional titles both indoor and outdoor.

Alex Smith

L3 Sport & Exercise Science My course is so interesting! We cover loads of different modules so I’ve been able to gain a wide range of knowledge to help me with the next step. The Academy has also been fantastic, and with us regularly training and playing matches, my cricket has massively improved. My goal is to get a cricket scholarship, so fingers crossed! I definitely recommend coming to Middlesbrough College, everything from the facilities to the location stands out – there’s everything you need under one roof!

Charlie Parkes

A Level – Law, Business, Psychology I played in the Football Academy at my school, so it was an obvious choice for me to progress on to Middlesbrough College as I knew there was a reputable team here. I’ve learnt a lot since joining the Academy (as well as my course!) and it’s made me work hard towards my goal of getting a scholarship in America. I love it here!

Golf

The Golf Academy at Middlesbrough College is based just 15 minutes away, at Stokesley Golf Range. With instructor James Atthey basing his coaching around the individuality of each player, he prides himself on his multi-disciplined approach that focuses on improving swing technique, mental approach and psychological abilities. With over 20 years as a coach, James believes each player has their own individual style, with the Academy helping to perfect this. State-of-the-art facilities and analysis tools support players in identifying their strengths and weaknesses, along with suggested techniques to develop their skills.

Mike Hay

L3 Sport & Exercise Science I love that I’m able to combine my hobby alongside my course at the College! I’m part of the Golf Academy, and thanks to the coaches I’ve been able to really improve over the two years. The teams are quite small so we’re able to get pretty bespoke training and develop our individual needs. We also train two times a week for three hours so it’s easy to fit around studies!

Players can also expect everything from support with collecting relevant performance data to the opportunity to develop your own skills tests and practice sessions.

As a member of our Gymnastics Academy, you can expect regular, specialist training sessions and the opportunity to partake in both regional and national championships! We also have a rather impressive alumni, with previous Academy competitors going on to represent Great Britain.

I trained in the College facilities before I came to study here, so, as they offered the course I was interested in it just made sense to come here! The facilities are great and the coaches are really supportive. Since joining the gymnastics academy I’ve been able to learn new routines and learn more on any areas I want to improve on. We’ve also had the chance to get involved in competitions which has been really exciting. As well as championships in the region, we’ve also been as far as Stoke-on-Trent for the nationals it’s really fun and has really helped to improve my confidence!

The Academy has competed in both regional and national competitions, in a range of disciplines including floor & vault, acrobatics and tumbling. The team have even made it through to the National Milano Team Championships! Structured and personalised training allows all disciplines of gymnastics to progress and flourish. It’s opened up multiple opportunities - a major highlight was coming 1st in the Country in the Table Tennis Championships in Nottingham! I’d definitely recommend joining an Academy alongside your studies at the College!
