Level 2 Apprenticeship in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools Overview of the course This course is run over 15 months and attendance at Middlesbrough College is every Friday 9.30am – 2.30pm for the vocational element of the course. The Level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship is applicable to learning support staff whose responsibilities at work are closely supervised. This course is for those who are employed to support pupils learning in schools. It is suitable for those who are employed as an apprentice or for those who are already employed and wish to gain a recognised qualification and/or progress within the workplace. Qualifications within the framework include: Functional Skills English Level 2, ICT Level 1, maths Level 1, Level 2 Certificate for Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools, Employer Rights and Responsibilities (E.R.R.). What will I learn? Whilst on this course you will cover a range of subjects which include: child and young person development, safeguarding the welfare of children and young people, communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults, equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people, schools as organisations, helping improve own and team practice in schools, maintain and support relationships with children and young people, support children and young people’s health & safety, support children and young people’s behaviour, support learning activities. You will also choose an additional unit which is specific to your role in the setting.
Middlesbrough College will also meet with your employer to discuss roles and responsibilities, eligibility and to ensure that the employer is aware of your progress so that you are supported throughout the programme. You will need an Enhanced Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) Check. If you do not have a grade A to C in English and/or maths, you will be required to continue studying these subjects as part of your study programme. How will I be assessed? The qualification is made up of knowledge and competence units. To achieve the competence units you will be observed in the workplace by an Assessor who will mark your performance against the assessment criteria of the qualification/unit in which you are working towards. Tutors/ Assessors will use a variety of assessment methods which will include assignment work, questions, discussion and reflective accounts. To achieve the knowledge units you may be asked to complete a set assignment or your Tutors/Assessors will again use a variety of assessment methods, including assignment work, questions, discussion and reflective accounts. What can I do after the course? Progression opportunities after this programme include the Level 3 Diploma Apprenticeship in Specialist Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools. On completion of the above qualifications, learners can gain a role supporting staff in schools.
What are the entry requirements? You must be in paid employment for 30 hours per week supported by your employer. Progression FdA Early Childhood Studies
Level 3 Apprenticeship in Specialist Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools Overview of the course This course is up to 72 weeks in length and attendance at college is one evening per week Wednesday 5.00pm – 8.00pm for the vocational element of the course. The Level 3 Apprenticeship is for learning support staff whose role requires competence across a range of responsibilities. The frameworks provide training for the roles of teaching, classroom and learning support assistant; special needs assistant; behaviour support assistant/coordinator. This course is for those who are employed to support pupils learning in schools. It is suitable for those who are employed as an apprentice or for those who are already employed and wish to gain a recognised qualification and/or progress within the workplace. Qualifications within the framework include: Functional Skills English Level 2, ICT Level 2, maths Level 2, Level 3 Diploma for Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools. What will I learn? Whilst on this course you will cover a range of subjects which include: communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults, schools as organisations, support learning activities, promote children and young people’s positive behaviour, develop professional relationships with children, young people and adults, promote equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people, support assessment for learning, engage in personal development, support children and young people’s health & safety, understand children and young person development, understand how to safeguard the well-being of children and young people. You will also cover some specialist subjects that are relevant to your work role. What are the entry requirements? You must be in paid employment for 30 hours per week – supported by your employer. When applying for University we can provide support with the UCAS application. On completion of this qualification, learners can gain a role supporting staff in schools.

Foundation Degree Early Childhood Practice Overview of the course Childhood studies is an exciting field drawing on knowledge from psychology, sociology and psychoanalysis. Early childhood experiences contribute to formative development and affects children for the rest of their lives. The modern world presents a wide range of new and challenging experiences for children, including constant access to media, wider cultural diversity, cyber-bullying and larger school numbers. This course prepares students to enter a career working with infants and children, whether in education, health care or childrens’ services, and make a positive contribution to these formative years. Please read our Essential Higher Education Course Information on page 15 for further information on our policies and procedures before you apply for this programme. What will I learn? Modules offered may vary. Year one core modules include: child development, pedagogy for early years, policy in practice and professional development portfolio. Year 2 modules include: action research for early years, enhancing learning in early years, professional development portfolio and safeguarding childrens’ rights.
You will be required to attend an interview prior to joining the programme and complete a written answer of 300 words outlining why you wish to study on the degree programme. You will also need to complete an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check. To apply to Level 5/year two, you must have 120 credits at Level 4 in a child care foundation degree or equivalent. You must have experience working in the early years sector and have access to 100 hours working in an early years setting (as a minimum). You must also have a commitment to continuing professional development in the early years sector and complete an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check. How will I be assessed? Learners will be assessed through coursework which includes essays, reports, case studies, research reports and portfolio work. What can I do after the course? Successful students may choose to progress to the BA (Hons) (Top-up) Early Childhood Practice, a one-year top up programme also delivered at the College, to gain a full Honours Degree award.
What are the entry requirements? In order to access the programme, individuals must be 18 years or over by 31 December in the first year of study. In addition, applicants must have achieved 48 UCAS tariff points from a Level 3 qualification or equivalent in a relevant subject and commit to gaining relevant experience working in the early years sector with access to 150 hours (as a minimum) working in an early years setting (paid or voluntary work). Applicants must also have a commitment to continuing professional development in the early years sector.

BA (Hons) Top-Up Early Childhood Professional Studies Overview of the course The Early Childhood Professional Studies (Top-Up) providers you with a Bachelors level qualification in early childhood practice and prepares you for a career working with infants and children in education, health care of childrens’ services, and make a positive contribution to these formative years. Please read our Essential Higher Education Course Information on page 15 for further information on our policies and procedures before you apply for this programme. What will I learn? Modules will include leading and managing professional practice, leading and managing in the childhood professions, supporting childrens’ needs and inclusion, historical context of childhood through childrens literature and its impact in the 21st century on current practice, independent research project, reflective practice for professional development. Modules offered may vary.
What are the entry requirements? In order to access this top up programme, applicants must have achieved an appropriate foundation degree or Level 5 equivalent. How will I be assessed? Applicants will be assessed through a variety of assessment methods, including, essays, presentations, research tasks, projects and case studies.
What can I do after the course? Gaining a Bachelor’s degree in childhood studies enables career progression within all aspects of professional childcare. Graduates may also be able to being a career in areas such as social work, day-care, nurseries and schools.

Professional Updating Forest Schools Overview of the course A Forest School is defined as ‘an inspirational process that offers ALL learners regular opportunities to achieve and develop confidence and self-esteem through hands-on learning experiences in a woodland or natural environment with trees’. With a number of workshops on offer, learners are able to gain an understanding of the Forest School approach, with modules that can be tailored to suit their particular requirements. What will I learn? The modules you will cover will differ slightly depending on the specific programme you choose to enrol on.
