News & Events John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank Appoints Hull Comedian & Actress Lucy Beaumont Honorary Vice President

The JCYEB supports young entrepreneurs as well as supporting enterprise education activities in Hull, East Riding and Ryedale.

Lucy said "I think it’s amazing what the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank does and I am looking forward to working with them to support young people in Hull my home City, particularly in the arts.“ JCYEB Chair, Ron Dickinson, said “We are delighted that Lucy is to become our latest Honorary Vice President, she brings a whole new dimension to our work as we look to support more young people realise their business dreams in the world of the arts.

We are extremely lucky to have her support.”

Employment Hub Appoints Scott Moore as the New Young Person’s Champion

#ChooseToChallenge We celebrated International Women’s Day by promoting young female entrepreneurs such as Becca Pettman of Grays Boutiques, Katie Norman of Labrascals, Millie Notarantonio of Millie Rose, Lucy Musgrave of Pure Delicious, Leah of Amethyst Cleaning, Beth Shepherdson of Rose's Closet, Bethany Cook of the Cook Collective, Doozie do Dyes, Emily Campbell of Hair By Emily, Charlene Genter of Resin Randoms, and young entrepreneurs of the year 2021 Nicole and Alex of Blush Cleaning.

Scott said of his appointment “Young people have been especially affected by the economic crisis caused by Covid-19. I look forward to working to improve the lives of young people in Hull.”

Hull City Council’s Employment Hub supports people of all ages to gain employment, training, education and volunteering experience.

They offer help with confidence building, job searching, CVs and cover letters, interviews and much more. Scott Moore will help focus on how the Hub provides top notch support to 16-24 year olds in the city.

Claire Young - Entrepreneur and former BBC Apprentice Contestant said "I could not see a better way to celebrate International Women’s Day and Hull Women's Week then to celebrate young female entrepreneurs in Hull who are all ambassadors for the City. In the many years I have worked with young people in Hull I have come across some brilliant young businesswomen.”

Judith’s Journey

Last month we announced the appointment of a new Hull City Council Young Person’s Youth Enterprise Champion.

We will follow Judith’s story over her year as Champion…

Hi, my name is Judith Meza and I’m the new Young Person’s Champion for Youth Enterprise with Hull City Council.

Working from home and starting a new job may cause some anxieties, however, the Youth Enterprise team have given me a socially distanced warm welcome. I’m settling in very well and have been made to feel needed.

The tremendous support received from the team has made working from home far less challenging.

It is fantastic to observe the many connections Youth Enterprise, Making Changes for Careers (MC4C), and the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank (JCYEB) have with several organisations. This enables them to best support young people develop their business ideas. They also direct young people in the right direction to access the appropriate support.

Although only working for Youth Enterprise for a short period of time, I am witnessing the genuine care the team have for the young people they come in contact with.

They want young people to succeed in their business and ensure that their wellbeing is supported, especially during the pandemic. I have experienced this support first hand, being a past participant with MC4C. The guidance and support of the mentor I have been put in touch with has enabled me to think about all aspects of a business plan. My mentor has directed me to webinars which not only develop my knowledge and understanding, but give me the opportunity to network with local entrepreneurs.

Now I am enjoying doing what I love, helping young people.

I’m excited that you’re coming on this journey with me. My hopes for this journey are to inspire some of you, young people, and to highlight the remarkable work programmes such as the MC4C and the work Youth Enterprise are doing in supporting young people to succeed in finding work, training and starting their own business. You will get to see how these programs help me develop and ultimately launch my own business.

In The Spotlight…

Mermaid Melts Bethany McTeare

Being a teenager is hard enough and especially during these current times.

Nevertheless this has not stopped Bethany, she has made the most of it.

Recently celebrating her 18th she came to MC4C for support in starting a new enterprise, becoming a young entrepreneur creating her own wax melts.

Bethany has now improved her enterprise skills by completing ‘The Big 13 Skills’ with MC4C, and is continuing to develop her business with one to one support from MC4C’s Business Advisor. Bethany and the team are very pleased with her progress and look forward to supporting her future aspirations.

Bethany says “MC4C helped me to learn skills that are essential to running a business such as teamwork and leadership and helped me to understand what I need to do to achieve these skills and have a successful business”.

Adam’s story…”My first experience on a film set was not the best. The day was unorganized and nobody knew what they were doing. I was asked to fill in for a small part in a low budget zombie film with only 24 hours’ notice. I remember thinking I could do it better. It wasn’t vanity, it was truth. A month later I thought I was ready to go. I had a name, I had a plan, and I had some cheap equipment. OOD TV was born.

A few months after ‘launching’ I had not progressed as much as I had hoped. I knew I needed help with the actual business side of things. This is when I came across MC4C. I suffered from shyness and slight anxiety when meeting new people but I went along and engaged with the programme. Upon completion I applied for, and was awarded, a JCYEB Test Market Grant. As well as being introduced to a Business Mentor.

Since engaging with my mentor, I have changed my business name, developed my business plan beyond anything I could have done by myself, and have found clients even during the pandemic. Something I would not have thought impossible.

I signed up to the Start Up Support Service and have been having regular meetings with the Micro Business Advisor. I have found my feet. My motivation and mind-set have improved and I have a clear expansion plan already unfolding. Which has paid dividends as I have recently won awards for my work.

The support I have received has enabled me to see that I can achieve anything I set my mind to, and more.

I am so thankful for everything that I have been through on this business journey. I know I wouldn’t be as successful as I am now without the backing and support I have received.”

John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank Grants The John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank grants can be awarded to a whole host of enterprising ideas.

Grant recipient Matt Wilcock tell us how the grant has helped his project.

I love public spaces, parks and gardens above all. I first found ‘Thinkers Corner’ in March 2020, a small park next to Drypool Bridge. It was a tip, full of litter and thorny plants. Week by week I have worked there every Wednesday morning, with a small community of volunteers. The project is helping improve the community and is perfect advertising for my business, as I am a gardener and garden designer.

There’s a statue in our park missing a nose, so as well as paying for tools and plants, the JCYEB grant will cover a new nose for our ‘Thinker’.

We’ll be holding a Renosing Ceremony at 3pm - Saturday 10th July 2021.

If you’d like to attend please Email to register. The event will be a fundraiser to help advertise for new volunteers, purchase tools and sustain our community group, and the work we do, for another year.

As well as financial help the JCYEB linked me up with two mentors, the marvellous Clare Thomas and Paul Crook. Who have helped me grow both the community of volunteers and the commercial arm of my work. Both have been an immense help, always patiently listening and ever insightful. I have also mentored an MC4C participant myself. Which I found very fulfilling, trying to work through someone else's problems, and pass on some of my knowledge. Rewarding work!

I want to share my thanks for my JCYEB grant and encourage others to apply!
