Business start-ups in Hull can now apply for up to £5,000 grants

Hull City Council has launched a new grant scheme which will deliver up to £5,000 for start-up businesses in the city. The scheme, through Government funding, will allow the council to help the local economy’s recovery from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic while supporting business formation and growth.

It is aimed at new Hull businesses formed or registered on or after March 11 2020. Most businesses eligible for support are expected to receive grants of around £2,000, with a maximum award of £5,000.

The funding can be used for business costs including equipment, business websites, and support with rent and ICT-related items but not vehicles.

Councillor Daren Hale, Leader of Hull City Council, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for new businesses in the city to apply for grant funding for a wide range of business costs, giving new businesses a huge boost.

Our start-up support and micro business support team do a brilliant job of helping new businesses to get off to the best possible start in Hull. Businesses wishing to make an application should first complete an online expression of interest form so the team can determine eligibility.

The closing date for applications is January 31 2022. The scheme has an end date of March 31 2022.

Job Opportunity!

Youth Enterprise Support Officer. (Fixed Term) CLOSING DATE: 16th August 2021.

The Support Officer's purpose is to underpin service delivery by providing effective customer focussed administrative support. This includes arranging meetings and panels, minute taking, basic financial transactions and monitoring, maintaining databases / data entry, acting as the link between customer access channels and the delivery of services through the scheduling of requests for service, elements of interaction with customers, stakeholders, partners and members, and other general administrative functions.

The post holder will provide effective, efficient and customer focussed support services to the Project Team and the Project Board as well as HLC on request. The post holder will also provide support to the Project Board as required.

This post is Fixed Term until July 31st 2022 with possible extension subject to funding.

Saying Goodbye to Sarah

It’ll be good to see you!

Slowly but surely, we’re getting back to “the new normal” as we call it.

Since March 2020, MC4C has delivered Enterprise and Business Skills remotely and despite now working from our new Hull offices for much of the week, we’ve still had to deliver training “virtually”. We’ll take a 121 with a young participant who’s looking for employment or self-employment, give help with a CV or a UCAS application or register a business with HMRC. The MC4C Team would like to wish Sarah Bonnett well in her new venture and thank her for all the work she has contributed to the programme. She has been a great asset to the MC4C Team.

We are beginning to offer socially distanced, face-to-face consultations. Some will still prefer the anonymity of the virtual world with the ability to turn off the camera, but for many, it’ll be much more natural to talk to a real person, without any internet issues. Also, the chance to see what the MC4C team really look like. After all, we’re not that scary!

Judith’s Journey I am now a qualified first aider! Being back at the office, I volunteered to attend the first aid training (for the first time) I found it to be interesting and maybe one day this training will prove to be useful.

This training will not only be useful in my current role, it will prove to be valuable once I am self employed.

Last month I revealed a glimpse of the logo. With amazing support from the Hull Libraries BIPC, I have now trademarked my business name, therefore I am able to share the logo. Keep an eye out for this logo in the near future.

Now that the business has a logo, it is time to introduce my business name; Everything Toastie. The thoughts behind this name are not only the fact that the main product will be toasties, but also the desire to provide an atmosphere that is warm and toastie in the café.

Therefore, members of the community may have that toastie feeling when they visit.

I had another opportunity to speak to the owner of Creations Galore and a fellow young entrepreneur Sammy Gibson. I engaged with a young person who, despite being a busy mum has been able to run a successful business.

Speaking with Sammy helped me to see the importance of balancing family life and being an entrepreneur. You can watch the full interview here.

In The Spotlight…

Josh Speed

Josh began his journey with MC4C in March 2021. He completed the Big 13 Enterprise Skills level 1 qualification via Zoom and showed himself to be a pleasant young man determined to find employment and make his parents proud.

After attending all weekly one to one sessions with the Employment Advisor at MC4C and applying for various roles in different sectors, Josh has now found two volunteering positions with the RSPCA and British Red Cross and has now been offered an opportunity for an interview in a local Marstons pub for front of house staff.

All at MC4C wish Josh the best of luck for the future, all his hard work is now paying off in abundance for him and the voluntary work he is undertaking is providing Josh with plenty of experience and having the opportunities of interviews to help with his confidence and self-esteem will move Josh forward in the employment route.

Micro Business Support Russell’s Emporium Laura Russell I started y business in December 2015 out of necessity. I could not find a job in the beautiful city of Bath, but the city had inspired me. I had been attending the Jane Austen Festival for a few years and had some private commissions but nothing of note. I asked my Mum to help me set up the shop. The shop kept ticking over but never making any profit until I had finished my degree in 2017, moved home.

I had been sent to Making Changes for Careers and there, with the help from the staff, I formulated a business plan and attended some markets. I managed to secure some funding from the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise bank and my business grew steadily, over the pandemic I have attended many different webinars on business and how to add to my plan. The Micro business support is really useful and speaking to others across the country, they do not have the support we do here. Having that sounding board and networking is amazing.

I have taken part in some online markets and they have expanded my customer base and helped me to open up to new products, markets and review my original business plan to more products and sales.
