I grew up on the ocean and have always had an affinity for nature and the outdoors. I thrive in a creative environment and love learning. I have a strong work ethic, the ability to work on a team or independently, am motivated and responsible. Experience in on site design and installation with a Landscape Designer on high-end residential properties. Worked with a diverse crew installing native grasses, shrubs and trees, including transplanting 60’ pines. I was responsible for selecting appropriate plants from nurseries to use for projects as well as running heavy machinery when necessary.

Skills Proficient in Auto CAD, Adobe Suites (Photoshop, illustrator, InDesign), Google Sketch-up, Microsoft Office, Hand Drawing and Watercolor. I am also knowledgeable about Northeastern plant/tree species and plant installation and care.

Interests When I’m not surfing, swimming or enjoying the outdoors, I enjoy making art – drawing, painting, photography, anything that gets my imagination flowing and my hands dirty.

Experience on a crew installing new projects (i.e. sodding & tree/shrub plantings.) I was also responsible for maintaining properties and estates. Other responsibilities include designing planting beds and the installation/design of a modular green roof system.

This project was designed for the North Coast Design Competition: Reconsidering the Toledo Waterfront, which asked designers to re-envision the role of the riverfront in Toledo and how this new role can embrace the realities of dredging. Our idea was to create a space that had multiple functions using modular spaces.

By dividing research sites into 2 acre plots researchers have the ability to control experimental areas more accurately creating better results. Community gardens will also be in this format to be easily navigable as well as evenly sized.

Plot Sizing

Public Space Open public space facing the surrounding communities will allow for ease of access for use by community members. The addition of Art walls will allow locals artist to showcase their work with open air galleries of different artistic mediums.

Community Gardens Garden plots will not only act as productive landscapes but also as a shared social space for residents to bond creating a sense of ownership, as well as help provide the community with healthy food alternatives.

Renewable Energy Currently Ohio ranks second nationally in solar power production, and with Ohio’s alternative energy standard the state mandates that 12 % of Ohio’s electricity must come from renewable sources by 2025.

Research Sites Toledo’s metropolitan area has a total of 14 colleges and universities. Research plots will be rented out to these institutions. Renewable energy and ecological research will be the main areas of study.

Habitat Creation The Maumee River acts as the breeding grounds for over a half million Walleye each spring, so much of the edge conditions will be converted to riparian habitat conditions for this particular species.

Remediating the Dredge The structural purpose of the art wall is to contain newly dredged material that may be lightly contaminated. This allows more dredge material to be collected from the Maumee River without having to be shipped and cleaned elsewhere. The use of specific plants species for phytoremediation will decontaminate the soil over time. This function will help highlight the importance of dredging to the riverfront community and other park users.

Art Wall Use Art walls are a way for community members to express themselves artistically. Local artists would be encouraged to show off their works in different mediums and styles. This would give street artists the opportunity to create works legally and without the worry of defacing personal property. The art wall will help bring artists together as well as create a more creative community.

In the Fall 2013 I spent the semester in Lisbon, Portugal to do an independent study. I was asked to choose a subject that interests me and has to do with Landscape Architecture. I was intrigued by the cities history and development especially in the difference between two Barrios, Portuguese for districts. For this project I was to analyze the two districts and compare how the are different from one another, both physically and historically.

Architectural Layout

Land use patterns between the two districts could not be more different. The organic streets of the Alfama are mostly mixed use commercial and residential, where as the grided streets of the baxia are mostly just commercial and retail spaces. There is also a noticeable difference in the amount of public space between the two districts.

The organic development of the Alfama is very apparent through the building layouts. The planning of the Baxia can be seen through the uniform shapes and sizes of the buildings. It is also notable how much larger the Alfama is compared to the Baxia.

Architectural Details

Windows The windows and window frames of the Baxia show the elegance and detail that is put into the detail of the facades. Many of the windows have balconies and are of varying sizes from building to building.

Color The color pallet of the Baxia is bright pastels as well as light colors. Many of the buildings have these bright colors to stand out from one another as to show off the commercial space on the first floors.

Detailing The detailing of the facades of buildings is very elegant compared to other districts. They show off the grandness of the building and complement the sophistication and refinement of the Baroque and Roccio styles of the monuments that are around the architecture.

Doors & Entrances The entrances to the buildings are designed to be unique to one another and tend to draw the visitor in through sheer style. One can window shop the local boutiques and bakeries throughout the district through these large glass entrances.

Baxia Street Light Detail The Baxia has unique street lamps to the rest of the city. The lamp post features elements of the crest of Lisbon (two crows on a boat) as well as other elegant designs. A lot of time goes into making these unique details.

Alfama Streetscape The streets of the Alfama organically grew over hundreds of years of development. The roads vary in width, anywhere from just a shoulders width to 30’. The roads twist and turn in various directions and are close to impossible to navigate to those who have never been. The buildings stand about three to five stories, with balconies over hanging the streets. The famous number 28 tram runs through some of the wider streets.

Heat Transfer from Tiles Tiles are an important part of Lisbon and they serve many purposes. The most practical of which is reflecting heat and light from the intense Mediterranean sun. In the winter the tiles act as insulation from the cool air coming off the frigid Atlantic Ocean.

Calçada Paving Detail Portuguese Paving or “Calçada Portuguesa” is the art of using pavers to create designs and patterns using pavers and is typical throughout Portugal and former territories. Each paver is hand chiseled to size then fit into place by hand by a master craftsman. In some areas these pavers are used to make elegant details that reflect the grandness of the surrounding area. In Lisbon there are very few asphalt roads, most are paved in this manner, which makes them easier to repair than traditional methods.

Project Brief For this project we were asked to revitalize the entrance of the village of Cazenovia, a small town near Syracuse. My task was to create a way to increase tourism and recreational opportunities in the area as well as facilitate a new L.L. Bean discovery school where they hold classes and expeditions on a daily basis.

Heritage Trail System The creation of a comprehensive, multi use trail system will attract much needed recreational tourism. These trails will work as loops each connecting to one another. The trails connect the many attractions in the area, each with it’s own attraction or destination to visit. The four trails are of varying lengths for different activities and uses.

Trail System The Trail system is broken into four different trails, including the 3 loops. Each trail show cases a unique area of Cazenovia, and leads to different attractions. The difference in size relates to use as well as difficulty level for users. This will help attract varying levels of recreational tourism.

Proposed Trail Sections The trail system would trek through multiple ecosystems and land types, requiring different solutions to deal with these conditions. Most of the trails would travel near the creek requiring special design as not to degrade the fragile creek edge. Other parts will travel through wetlands requiring raised walkways.

Lake Guayo project location: Castaner, PR

Project Brief Lake Guayo sits in the heart of Puerto Rico in the small coffee farming village of Castaner. The lake itself is man made and was formed as a source of hydroelectric power and irrigation for the region. For this project we were to analyze the issues related to the lake, what could be done to remediate the issues, and find a solution to bring income to this impoverished region

Watershed & High points Lake Guayo is surrounded on all sides by very steep terrain, which creates increased velocity in the rivers and run-off that flows into it. The water shed starts at these high points including in the village, located on the south end of the lake.

Inlets & Outlets The Lake has five main inlets where water travels in including the main inlet where the hydroelectric dam is located on the northern side of the lake. The inlets are the main sources for sediment to enter the lake. The only outlets are pipes which feed to other hydroelectric plants via gravity. There are also smaller pipes which irrigate many of the fields to water crops.

Plantations & Farms The entire lake is surrounded by plantations and farms which use the water from the lake to keep the crops hydrated. There are many signs of erosion on these farms from rain fall in combination with loose soils. These farms are the economic life blood of this small community.

Lake Guayo Issues Sedimentation is a huge issue concerning Lake Guayo. With every rain event more silt is deposited into the lake, due to poor farming techniques and logging. Slowly the lake is filing up, by the year 2200 the lake will be completely dry due to the heavy sedimentation.

Chemical Spraying Sun grown coffee plantations require many chemicals to keep bugs and other pests away, as well as keep the plants healthy (since coffee is naturally needs shade.) Farmers must spray the plants frequently to keep coffee yields high.

Lake Contamination Run off from frequent rain events collects pesticides, chemicals, and contaminated soil from the surrounding plantations and municipal sewers. Which is then transported into the lake. This creates many problems including algal blooms which kill off fish and the wildlife. This contamination makes the lake unsuitable for drinking or swimming.

Shade grown coffee is a more environmentally and economically viable way of growing coffee than traditional methods. By planting different crops, a farmer has a more diversified yield.

An increase in tourism will require more lodging. By creating open air, eco-tourist accommodations visitors will feel as though they are camping, while providing the comforts of a hotel.

Lake Guayo is polluted from sediment and chemicals/fertilizers from coffee plantations. By encouraging farmers to change from sun to shade grown coffee should remediate this problem. Facilitating a movement to clean municipal infrastructure as well as lake cleanups to rid the lake of garbage that litters the shores, would drastically improve lake conditions.

Fresh water fishing is popular in Puerto Rico but there are very few places to fish. Lake guayo is lacking in fish species variety. By stocking new species as well as ensuring existing populations will create a more fishing friendly environment. There by attracting more people to the lake.

There is no public access to the Lake which further disconnects the lake from the village of Castaner. Adding a dock and a boat ramp would increase the amount of activity on the lake as well as attract people that would visit Castaner for recreational activities.

Kayaking is a great recreational activity that will attract people to the lake. By creating a rental system locals can make revenue directly off of tourists. Tourists in turn will be able to experience the lake in a more interactive way.

Fishing Charters & Tours Charter fishing is a huge attraction for the lake. Having a few charters will increase the economic viability of the area tremendously. Visitors will get a hands on fishing experience without needing to buy all the gear. Creating a dynamic and exciting recreational activity.

Grace Church project location: Syracuse, New York

Site Inventory

Project Brief Grace Church is a highly under utilized space in the Syracuse university area. The site is rarely used due to lack of care and poor design. We were asked to analyze the site and then create a space that is not only useful but also peaceful. A place that allows for meditation, reflection, and memorialization for the church congregation as well as the surrounding community.

Site Inventory & Analysis The site itself holds ashes of deceased members of the congregation, which makes some areas sacred. The mature trees on site are unhealthy and do not let much light onto the site. The site also does not have much grade change allowing some areas to become saturated with water. In all the site is not well maintained or designed and needs several improvements to become successful.
