LEARN TO SWIM CLASS DESCRIPTIONS PRE-SCHOOL CLASSES Pre-School (4-5 years) - Students in this class will learn basic water adjustment skills with an emphasis on play to prepare them for comfort in the water for Level 1 & 2. It is designed to teach swimmer independence with initial play in the wading pool and progression to the main pool when students are ready. Advanced Pre-School (4-5 years) - The advanced preschool is like the preschool class, but will have students start to work on level 1 material at an earlier age. Students must have taken the preschool class to enroll.

ADULT & TEEN This class is for adults who either want to overcome their fear of the water or are comfortable in the water, but would like to improve their strokes. PARENT & BABY Infant (6-18 months) - This class is designed to teach parents how to work safely and effectively with their infant to provide a safe environment, so they can develop water adjustment skills and have fun in the water. Toddler (18-48 months) - The focus of this class is to teach skills learned in the infant level and progress to more advanced skills that are age appropriate for a toddler. Again, parent and child will be working together in the water.

YOUTH CLASSES Level 1 & 2 (6-13 years) - Swimmers will start to learn basic THANK YOU PARTNERS water exploration and swimming skills. This class covers submersion in the water, floating & gliding on front & back, rhythmic breathing, safety skills, and front & back crawls at a beginner level. Level 3 (6-13 years) - This class is designed to build upon skills learned at Levels 1 & 2. The back crawl will be expanded and the front crawl will be perfected. Students will also learn to tread water. Level 4 (6-13 years) - This class is designed to build upon the skills mastered at Level 3. Students develop more endurance to swim greater distances. Breaststroke and sidestroke are also taught. SWIM LESSONS FOR HOME SCHOOL PROGRAMS This is a great physical education addition to your home-school curriculum. Ms. Lianhong Chen (Mary C. Shingler) Ms. Chen is a graduate of Chongqing Normal University and Shenzhen University in China. She is a professional dancer in the Opera Bian Lian where she performed the spectacular Face Change Dance. She has performed in New York, Houston, Dallas and throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Ms. Chen is the recipent of numerous awards for her skills and talents. Ms. Chen is a certified instructor for Tai Chi and Zumba and also teaches Chinese Mandarin language. She teaches a variety of classes at Lark Community Center.

REGISTER TODAY! ONLINE REGISTRATION Register online at https://webtrac.mcallen.net. You must log-in with your username and password. If this is the first time you register online, please create a username and password and enter all pertinent household information. All new users will be automatically charged non-resident fees until your residency can be verified. Bring a utility bill with your household information to your local McAllen Community Center to validate your residency. Only VISA and MASTERCARD credit card payments are accepted. WALK-IN REGISTRATION Walk-in registration is accepted at Lark, Las Palmas and Palm View Community Centers during regular business hours. Proof of residency is required (Photo ID & Utility Bill) when registering. Walk-in registration is not accepted at the Parks and Recreation Administration Office located at 1000 S. Ware Rd. Forms of payment accepted include CASH, CHECK, VISA and MASTERCARD. MAIL-IN REGISTRATION Mail completed registration forms along with payment to: City of McAllen Parks and Recreation P.O. Box 220 McAllen, TX 78502 Please make checks payable to City of McAllen. Include your phone number and Driver’s Liscense/ID state and number. Please allow for at least two weeks for adequate mailing time. Registration forms received after the program start date will be returned. REGISTRATION POLICIES Registration is acceped on a first-come, first-serve basis. Advance registration is required for all activities unless otherwise noted.

RETURNED CHECK POLICY A $25 service charge will be assessed for all returned checks, and students will be removed from classes until finances are settled. MEDICAL POLICY The City of McAllen Parks and Recreation Department will not prohibit any person from participating in an activity due to a medical condition or handicap, unless such condition is likely to cause injury to that individual or other participants in the activity. A participant who has been notified by a qualified medical professional that he/she has a medical condition that is likely to cause injury to themselves or other participants, is obligated to inform the Parks and Recreation Department, at the time of registration, of the condition and willingly withdraw from the program or activity if requested by the Department. It is recommended that all participants receive medical authorization before participating in these programs.
