McALLEN PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT REGISTRATION POLICIES

DIRECTORY OFFICES & SITES

REGISTRATION Walk-in registration will be taken on a first come, first served basis, pending space availability. Register in person at Las Palmas Community Center (1921 N. 25th St.), Lark Community Center (2601 Lark Ave.) and Palm View Community Center (3401 Jordan Rd.) during normal business hours. Walk-in registration is not accepted at the Parks and Recreation Administration Office located on Ware Road. Advance Registration Required. We accept cash, check, Visa or Mastercard. Register online at https:// webtrac.mcallen.net. Visa and Mastercard are accepted forms of payment online. A $20 service charge will be assessed for all returned checks, and students will be removed from classes until finances are settled. REFUNDS AND TRANSFERS TRANSFERS between classes will be allowed only prior to the second class meeting, at no charge. After the second class meeting, transfers may be made, pending space availability, with a charge of $5 per class. REFUNDS for classes will be allowed only prior to the second class meeting and will carry a $10 fee per class. Requests for transfers and refunds must be in writing. Some of our programs, such as Adult Leagues and Facility Rentals, have different, specific policies which apply. The McAllen Parks and Recreation Department retains the privilege of canceling any scheduled activity that fails to generate minimum interest. Refunds will take 30 to 60 days to process.

The Department strives to: Improve the quality of life through the provision of well balanced, high quality recreation programs for the residents of McAllen to enjoy during their leisure time. Facilitate wholesome and constructive programs with a measurable value to the community. Provide attractive and well-maintained major parks and recreation facilities in each sector of the city. These facilities should be within a reasonable distance of every surrounding neighborhood and offer safe opportunities for athletic competition, facility gatherings, and other passive and active recreation activities. Promote environmental conservation, eco and cultural tourism and socially oriented special events.

McFUN BUS TRANSPORTATION

Summer 2013 program participants will be able to travel to recreation sites and swimming pools using Metro McAllen. Participants age 17 years and younger can ride the buses at NO CHARGE using the McFun Fare Bus Pass, if they are enrolled in any McAllen Parks and Recreation Program. Check the bus routes for locations and times. Follows regular bus routes. Passes will be issued upon request, at the time of registration.

YOUTH ADULT SPORTS T.A.A.F. PROGRAMS

McAllen Parks and Recreation is proud to offer Texas Amateur Athletics Federation (T.A.A.F.) programs. Youth athletes will compete against other individuals and teams from across the Rio Grande Valley and the state in various sports including track & field, golf, swimming and tennis. Teams will attend local tournaments and meets, earning the opportunity to compete at the regional level. Qualifying athletes will earn a chance to compete in the Games of Texas, a week-long Olympic style competition featuring a variety of sports. The 2013 Games of Texas will be held July 25–28 in Corpus Christi, TX. Experienced athletes are invited to join Team McAllen. A complete schedule of meets and competitions will be provided once classes begin. Individual T.A.A.F. membership is included in the class fee. Other fees including individual meet fees are the responsibility of the participant.

TEAM GOLF

Improve your golfing skills while competing in tournaments against participants from across the Rio Grande Valley throughout the summer. Participants are required to complete a playing test prior to joining the team. Tests will be held on Monday, June 3rd.

Beginner Guitar - Acoustic guitar required. Learn proper techniques to play, including strumming and chords. Creative Writing - Learn techniques to increase your creativity while writing your own story. Folklorico - In this class you will learn the many different styles of traditional Mexican dance and choreography. INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM OF ART & SCIENCE OPERATION IMAGINATION inspires, intrigues and delights children of all ages! Campers don’t even realize they are learning because they are having so much fun! Experienced education staff will supervise and guide your child as he or she explores, creates, and learns. McAllen ISD provides an optional breakfast and lunch for all participants. We accept campers at 8:45 a.m. for the morning classes and at 12:45 p.m. for the afternoon classes. Students in the afternoon classes are welcome to stay for supervised playtime from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Rioscape or IMAS’s Children’s Discovery Pavilion. FEES AND REGISTRATION

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS IMAS Circus - Greatest Show on Earth! (Age 5 years) Your little artist will get to explore their imagination and be creative and messy at the same time as they enjoy circus activities, songs, books, and games. Shapes, Colors, Music and More ....Oh My! $35 for Session 5 (5 years only) IMAS Rodeo (Ages 6-7 & 8-9 years) Bronco racing and panning for gold! Surviving the Wild West and handling your herd! Rope up your skills to be an awesome cowboy or girl at the IMAS Rodeo! Super Hero Science (Age 6-7 , 8-9 & 10-12 years) We will have adventures built around physics and chemistry experiments as we explore the abilities of super heroes in both ancient and modern times. Mysterious Universe (Age 6-7 , 8-9 & 10-12 years) Join our class as it explores the universe with a scientific eye and investigate Chinese, African and Native American star gazing! Your child will find out how people in ancient times tried to make sense of our universe and compare it to our modern understanding using new technologies. Harry Potter Science (Age 6-7 , 8-9 & 10-12 years) Enter the magical world of Harry Potter through science. Your child will learn to become a witch or a wizard through extensive training in potion making, broomstick flying, magical creature care, and dragon egg hunting! A celebration will take place in the “Grand Hall” when their lessons are complete. Dragons and Phoenixes (Age 6-7 , 8-9 & 10-12 years) Bring your imagination to experience life in China during the Qing Dynasty! Through hands on activities and the teachings of the Dowager Empress Cixi herself, your children will train to be lords and ladies of the Imperial Palace. (Dragons and phoenixes are part of the symbolism used in our stunning Chinese palace exhibit on loan from the Smithsonian Museums and will be a key part of this class). Rainbow Connection (Age 6-7 , 8-9 & 10-12 years) Beautiful vivid color is all around us! Find out the science behind those colors through experiments and creations as your child manipulates and tests color in new and innovative ways to help them make the rainbow connection. League of Explorers (Age 8-9 & 10-12 years) The last clues have been found and the discovery of a lost Aztec treasure is getting closer by the minute, but there is still much to be done! Your brave and clever young Indiana Jones will join the IMAS League of Explorers. If you seek an adventure, then help IMAS recover this most precious artifact!

IMAS Gaming Academy (Ages 10-12 years) Ever wonder how your favorite video games are made and want to learn to make your own? Join IMAS Gaming Academy and learn the basics of game design.
