In 1823, Sir Rober t Smirke designed the British Museum in the Greek Revival style. The Duveen Gallery, designed by the American architect John Russell Pope for the Par thenon sculptures was completed in 1939. It opened in 1962 to display 247 ft of the original 524 ft of the Par thenon frieze, 15 of the 92 metopes, and 17 pedimental figures. The frieze sculpted under the direction of Pheidias, depicts the Panathenaic procession with 378 figures and 245 animals.

In the mid-5th centur y BC, Pericles initiated an ambitious building project on the Acropolis hill that included the Par thenon, the Propylaia, the Erechtheion and the temple of Athena Nike.

East. The Par thenon is a Doric peristyle temple with 8 columns on the ends and 17 on the sides.


NE corner. Lion head false spout. Triglyphs alternating with metopes that, on the nor th side, depict the Troyan war.

SE corner. The east pediment sculptures narrates the bir th of Athena from the head of her father, Zeus.

West. Entasis: the columns are slightly convex to avoid an optical illusion caused by the shaft’s fluting.


SW corner. Reconstruction work on the cella walls.


The Erechtheion was considered the most sacred of the Acropolis temples.


At the south porch the roof was suppor ted by six statues of maidens known as the Car yatids.

The Temple of Athenea Nike is a tetrastyle Ionic structure designed by the architect Kallikrates.

In 1989, Melina Mercouri, as Minister of Culture star ted a campaign for the return of the Par thenon Marbles from the British Museum. In the meantime cast copies stand in place of the absent original frieze, metopes and pediments.
