A portion of Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 252 Detachment B returned to Cherry Point Dec. 5 after a ninemonth deployment. While deployed, the Marines supported operations with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit and Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force Crisis Response Force. The pilots and crewmembers with Det. B traveled all over Europe and the Middle East assisting with the missions of the Black Sea Rotational Force, and the 2nd Force Reconnaissance Company. “The tasking part was moving around all the time, constantly moving to new locations and setting up shop,” said Capt. Joshua Mallow, the assistant operations officer and pilot for the detachment. KC-130J Super Hercules were used to conduct missions like aerial refueling, logistics and delivery missions, said
Mallow. “We executed all types of aerial refueling like fixed wing, rotary wing with tilt rotary and aerial delivery ground refueling,” said Mallow. “This is where we basically land in an airfield and set up a gas station for others to come through and fill up.” The last two months of the deployment, the detachment remained static in Spain for embassy support of the task force. “Our mission was to be on stand by and be ready to insert a Marine force into an embassy for reinforcements in case an emergency happened,” said Mallow. “Thankfully we did not have to execute that mission, because if we did, it would have been a bad day for somebody.” The Marines visited many different places and numerous cultures in their travels. “The amount of professionalism and initiative they displayed throughout the entire deployment was unmatched,” said Mallow.

CAMP LEATHERNECK, Afghanistan – Brig. Gen. Gary Thomas relinquished command of 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing (Forward) to Col. Scott Jensen during a change of command ceremony at Camp Leatherneck Dec. 9. Jensen, who served as the assistant wing commander, will command 2nd MAW (Fwd.) until the unit conducts a scheduled transfer of authority with 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing (Forward) in February. As the Marine Corps continues the drawdown of troops in Afghanistan, units are adapting their command structure to continue to meet both operational and drawdown goals. In Helmand, the Afghan National Security Forces have taken the lead in providing security to the province’s citizens, allowing the Marine Corps to focus on its advise and assist mission. During his remarks, Thomas applauded the Afghan National Army’s 215 Corps and said their achievements represent the improved capabilities of the Afghan National Security Forces. “Over the past several months, significant gains have been made in Regional Command (Southwest’s) area of responsibility,” said Thomas. “The Afghan National Security Forces continue to take great strides in taking the fight to the enemy and is See COC page A9

Air station cancels 2014 air show The 2014 Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point Air Show, scheduled for Spring of 2014, has been canceled. The air station’s commanding officer made the difficult decision to cancel the biennial event, which also serves as an open house for the public, due to major reductions in the air station’s budget for the coming year. The next Cherry Point Air Show, if conducted, would be scheduled for Spring of 2016. Contact the MCAS Cherry Point joint public affairs office at (252) 466-5895 or chpt.jpao.omb@usmc.mil for more information.
Flags half-staffed for Mandela Flags were flown at half-staff Dec. 6-9 to honor the passing of Nelson Mandela. Mandela, the former president of South Africa, was a symbol of his country’s struggle against racial oppression. He defied white minority rule and endured incarceration for 27 years while focusing the world’s attention on apartheid, the legalized racial segregation enforced by the South African government until 1994. A memorial was held Tuesday for Mandela in Johannesburg, South Africa. President Barack Obama and former Presidents George W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter attended.

What do we call this tree anyway? LT. KYRON BELL MARINE AIR CONTROL GROUP 28 CHAPLAIN
We are now in one of the more festive times of the year. Immediately after Thanksgiving, the customary practice for many of us in this country is to begin hanging up strings of lights, mistletoe, stockings, candy canes, garland, ribbons, wreaths and then setting it all off with the sweet aroma of scented candles. Decorating the house can be an exciting event, and it will not be too long before you find yourself totally engrossed in the moment. But wait! There’s one more thing we typically put up during this time of year. It’s the evergreen conifer commonly recognized as either the spruce, pine or fir tree. Some people decide to put up a real tree in the house while others choose an artificial one. There’s no right or wrong way to do this. It is simply based on your preferences. Now that we are talking about the tree, the question that has been on the table for years is, what do we call it? Is it a Christmas tree? A holiday tree? Does it even matter? Given our pluralistic and politically correct society, many find themselves unsure what to call this tree, being careful not to offend others. Groups influenced by Christianity will call it a Christmas tree, stating it is only fitting to do so since Easter eggs and Easter baskets are not called holiday eggs or holiday baskets. Non-Christian groups are more likely to refer to it by what they would con-
sider its more inclusive name, a holiday tree. In recent news, the governor of Rhode Island just changed the name of their statehouse’s 17-foot spruce back to Christmas tree after calling it a holiday tree for the past two years. Even a mayor of a small town in New Jersey recently announced his decision to refer to their tree as a Christmas tree. If you are going to call it a holiday tree, which holiday are you referring to? Interestingly, the etymology of the word holiday is “holy day,” meaning religious festival. While this dispute has yet to trigger any civil wars, it has launched a controversy that can be rather sensitive for people this time of year. Most of us are employees and service members who belong to the U.S. Navy or Marine Corps. In our institution, we have religious freedom under the First Amendment, and we all share the responsibility to exercise religious tolerance. Religious freedom affords us the right to say Christmas tree or holiday tree, merry Christmas or happy holidays, happy Kwanzaa, or happy Hanukkah. Religious tolerance calls for us to practice nonjudgmental acceptance of another person’s beliefs. Whatever your persuasion, let us try to make this season a jolly time for all. So be careful not to be so dogmatic in your ideology that you become a Grinch to someone else’s experience during this festal season.

Logistic and embarkation specialists assist in ensuring Marines and their equipment are ready for exodus when they deploy in support of their country. Marines who support the movement of missionessential personnel, supplies and equipment use both military and civilian transportation resources. Cpl. Luis D. Baez, with Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 467, performs this responsibility daily by procuring and supplying logistics support data essential to Marine Air Ground Task Force planning and operations. Baez, a Jacksonville, Fla., native, says he enjoys being able to work independently in his profession. “Being able to lead and plan everything out myself is my favorite aspect of the job,” said Baez. “I’ve been given the opportunity to pretty much be on my own and show everyone that I can make things happen. I’m proud of that.” Baez demonstrated his proficiency recently, providing support to more than 600 deploying service members. Baez prides himself in this accomplishment, and helping Marines. “I’ve been able to serve more than 600 people in my line of work and it’s an honor,” said Baez. Off duty, Baez enjoys surfing, snowboarding and playing the ukulele. He enjoys being social and spending time with his fellow Marines.

More than 1,200 local community members watched the New Bern Ballet Company perform its rendition of “The Nutcracker” at the Two Rivers Theater and Event Center Friday. Performing for their third consecutive year at Cherry Point, the cast dedicated more than four months of prolonged practices to master the intricate choreography to ensure the production was a success, said Laura Karmi, the artistic director of the New Bern Ballet Company. “I thought it was an outstanding perfor-
mance that left me wanting to learn more about the New Bern Ballet Company,” said Master Sgt. Fred Brock, the personal and professional development representative with Marine and Family Programs. “I brought my daughters to help them learn about the art of dancing.” The Nutcracker is based on the story, “The Nutcracker and the King of Mice” written by E.T.A. Hoffman. The story tells of a little girl who receives her beloved nutcracker during the Christmas holiday. The nutcracker then battles his arch enemy the Mouse King. After a daring sword fight, the girl and her
prince are visited and entertained by the Sugar Plum Fairy and her legion of interesting characters. The company presented its 9th performance of the ballet and is looking forward to years more. The performers show their love for the art form and work hard to ensure the performance is enjoyable for the participants and audience members. “I’m used to dancing in front of crowds but dancing in front of military members is different,” said Goodman. “They have paused from protecting our country, and it’s amazing to know that they are here to see us.”
The performance was open to all authorized air station patrons and their families. As the show came to an end, the crowd cheered and applauded the company for a job well done. “This time of year is always busy, and it is truly significant that the New Bern Ballet company takes the time to bring their show to us,” said Staff Sgt. Terri Kopetzki, a small ensemble leader with the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing Band. “‘The Nutcracker’ is not only a great way to celebrate the holiday season, but it is also a great way to share or introduce the arts with our children.”

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Brunei – The 4th biennial Brunei Darussalam International Defense Exhibition and Conference welcomed the public to view the U.S. and other international military aircraft static displays Dec. 4–6 at Rimba Air Base in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei. The displays and demonstrations at BRIDEX 13 allow U.S. and other nation’s military officials and companies to showcase defense equipment and capabilities across land, sea, air and security spectrums. “It’s good for (the Marine Corps) to participate in the airshow because it allows us to demonstrate the capabilities and versatilities of the MV-22B Osprey,” said Maj. David M. Sherman, an Osprey pilot with Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 262, Marine Aircraft Group 36, 1st Marine Aircraft Group. “Most parts of this world haven’t seen the aircraft before, so this enables us to spread our message and demonstrate the aircraft.” BRIDEX offers an international forum for the development of continued support for friends and allies around the world, building security partnerships, and furthering cooperative engagement between the U.S. and Brunei. “By flying very important persons, our partner nation military leaders and media, we’re able to make a greater influence in the region,” said Shearman, who flew three demonstration flights. “So it’s good that the media can get our story out. They show what the aircraft’s capable of doing and how we can assist in the region.” The demonstration flights consisted of rolling takeoff in conversion mode, and climb up to altitude, according to Shearman. Then the aircraft did a spiral approach down into a Brunei drop zone, were it landed and then took off in helicopter mode. During the flights, the aircraft turns created about 2.5 Gs, which many of the passengers had never experienced before. The Osprey was the only U.S. aircraft to fly VIPs participating in BRIDEX and local media; however, a U.S. Marine KC-130J Super Hercules and a U.S. Air Force C-17 Globemaster III were on display for visitors to tour. “Today is an exciting day for the boys to see an aircraft they see in movies like ‘Transformers,’” said Zakaria Mohaamadnor, a teacher at Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin College Air Scout, which is where Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan of Brunei, went when he was young. “They’re actually going in and touching (an Osprey) and learning more about this new generation of a two-in-one aircraft. So it’s a big thing for them.” Allowing the public to visit the static aircraft display is also crucial to build new bonds. The Marines spent hours meeting thousands of community members, taking time for group photos and answering many questions. “The public can see that we’re active in this region,” said Shearman. “They also get to meet the Marines on an individual level, instead of seeing us on the news or something.” As BRIDEX 13 comes to an end, many participants leave knowing that this biennial event continues to be important for all involved and has developed long lasting relationships. “We’d like to thank the U.S. Marines and the people that are giving us this educational information,” said Mohaamadnor. “I’m sure this is something that many have never had a chance like before.”

Military occupational specialty enlisted assignment monitors begin Friday’s portion of the monitor visit at Miller’s Landing where they met Marines one-on-one to answer questions regarding their careers. Marines receive insight during monitor visit MCAS CHERRY POINT
Marine Corps military occupational specialty enlisted assignment monitors visited Cherry Point Dec. 5 and 6 to give Marines an opportunity to ask questions about their occupational fields. The monitors gave presentations and conducted oneon-one interviews with Marines in person or on webcams to discuss subjects like career changes, reenlistments, special duty assignments and permanent change of duty stations. “The most common question we get from Marines is ‘What are my options?’” said Master Gunnery Sgt. David M. Ray, a manpower management enlisted assignment monitor. “We like to sit with them and let them know all about their reenlistment options as well as special duty assignments that are available in the Corps.” Monitor visits provide commands with information pertaining to enlisted assignments and help support command retention. Additionally, the visits allow enlisted Marines an opportunity to discuss future assignments with the primary MOS monitors. “A lot of times Marines find it easier to understand something when someone is sitting with them and speaking to them like human beings,” said Ray. “When it comes to things like this, the Marines want to speak with someone with senior leadership that can get them as much information as possible. The monitors do this kind of thing 365 days a year so we feel we are better able to get the Marines’ questions answered. ” Sgt. Zachary J. Offhaus, a flight equipment noncommissioned officer in charge with Marine Aerial Refueler Squadron 252, sat down with his monitor to find out what next steps he should take in his career. “I actually learned a lot about special duty assignments and what kind of direction I can head to in order to succeed,” said Offhaus. “It’s also nice to be able to get an idea of what to expect later on in my career.”

Marines complete arrested landings on Tinian

An F/A-18D Hornet with Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 112 waits to refuel Dec. 5 at Tinian’s West Field during exercise Forager Fury II. The training consisted of rapid ground refueling and arrested landing operations, extending aviation training throughout the Marianas Island Range Complex. The series of exercises that Marine Aircraft Group 12 is conducting in the Marianas Islands focuses on refining core skills within the squadrons and MAG. This, in turn, prepares them to function as an integrated air unit able to perform a wide range of missions. TINIAN, Northern Marianas Islands – Marine Wing Support Squadron 171 conducted an arrestment landing exercise using two M-31 Marine Corps expeditionary arresting gear systems Dec. 5 at Tinian’s West Field during Exercise Forager Fury II. The exercise allows units to rapidly conduct ground refueling and arrested landing operations, extending aviation training throughout the Marianas Island Range Complex. Marine aircraft wing and Marine aircraft group exercises and training on Guam and within the MIRC demonstrate the aviation combat element capabilities of the Marine Air-Ground Task Force. Aviation capabilities enable the MAGTF to project force or respond to crises throughout the Asia-Pacific region. The squadrons that participated in the training were Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 112, “The Cowboys,” from
Fort Worth, Texas; and VMFA-232, “The Red Devils,” from Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif., currently deployed to Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, under the unit deployment program with MAG-12. “The mission of MWSS-171 was to establish a forward arming and refueling point at West Field so aircraft could come in, land and fuel up,” said Lt. Col. Howard Eyth, commanding officer of MWSS-171. During this training, Marine aviation units are able to practice, train for and execute the six functions of Marine aviation: assault support, anti-aircraft warfare, offensive air support, electronic warfare, control of aircraft and missiles, and aerial reconnaissance. “Being the airfield operations Marines, we provide the aviation ground support aspect of the exercise,” said Chief Warrant Officer Charles Dine, expeditionary airfield fire and emergency services officer with MWSS-171. “We’re enablers for these types of exercises. (MWSS-171) provides the fuel, the arresting gear and aircraft rescue and
firefighting services.” MWSS-171 effectively accomplished nine arrestment landings within a 30-minute time frame after having successfully installed the M-31. “The training out here is for everybody,” said Staff Sgt. Joaquin Moreno, the expeditionary airfield staff noncommissioned officer in charge with MWSS-171. “It’s for the Marines to install the arresting gear, operate it and push it to its maximum output. It is for the command to know the abilities of its units that are not organic to it. And ultimately, for the commander to be aware that he can employ any arresting gear system in any clime and place.” The series of exercises that MAG-12 is conducting in the Marianas Islands focus on refining core skills within the squadrons and MAG. This in turn prepares them to function as an integrated air unit able to perform a wide range of missions.

Thomas thanked the Marines and Sailors of 2nd MAW (Fwd.) for their work over the last year as the aviation combat element providing an important enabling capability that highlights the strength of the Marine Air-Ground Task Force. “To the extent that 2nd MAW (Fwd.) has been successful is due to our outstanding Marines and Sailors, said Thomas. “Their work has been nothing short of amazing. I am very proud of their accomplishments thus far. “My successor is a proven commander and combat leader, said Thomas. “I am confident under Col. Jensen’s able leadership that 2nd MAW (Fwd.) will continue to provide support to Regional Command (Southwest) and continue to strive for excellence to ensure the product we deliver remains on the cutting edge. Jensen said the wing will continue to support partnered operations and provide logistics support to forward operating bases. He said he believes the demands on aviation units will continue to increase as coalition forces drawdown troops. “We still have a lot of hard work ahead, said Jensen. “The last couple of months of a deployment are critical. Brig. Gen. Thomas has put us on a path for success and I have no doubt we will continue on that path.
what makes us such a unique squadron. Jackson whas been meritoriously promoted three times in his career. He said he plans to better the Marines through education and emphasizing NCO leadership courses for all noncommissioned officers. “For me, this will be a different and bigger challenge, said Jackson. “Otis is all over the world, and I can’t wait to get out and see the great job the Marines are doing all over. Jackson has been deployed four times in his career. This includes two combat deployments – one to Somalia and one to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Jackson’s personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, three Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals and four Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals.

Coastal Christmas Flotilla reels in holiday season PFC. GRACE L. WALADKEWICS MCAS CHERRY POINT
Sounds of the Christmas season filled New Bern’s Union Point Park as the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing Band performed holiday favorites for community members during the 29th Annual Coastal Christmas Flotilla Saturday. Along with the band, the Flotilla featured boats, yachts, oars, kayaks and commercial vessels ornamented with lights and decorations welcoming the holiday season. “It’s great getting a chance to be around the neighbors and ring in the holidays with them,” said Gunnery Sgt. Michael Maschmeier, the enlisted conductor with the 2nd MAW Band. “We as the military are part of this community, so it is important that we keep the relationship between the base and the community strong.” The band performed an array of Christmas favorites like “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” as boats lit up the Trent and Neuse rivers in a parade for patrons of all ages to enjoy. “The Marines have had many rehearsals and are very dedicated to this performance,” said Maschmeier. “This is one of my favorite types of performances to be involved in because being able to provide great music for an audience is always a big thrill.” “Playing a local concert for free is a small way of giving back to the local community,” said Sgt. Danielle Schaller, French horn player with the band. “I love being involved and getting the chance to spread Christmas spirit and cheer through the music we play.” After the performances and the flotilla, children lined up anxiously waiting for a visit from Santa Claus himself, who arrived at the dock on a decorated boat. Santa handed out candy canes and checked Christmas lists. “Our way of spreading the Christmas cheer is by entertaining,” said Schaller. “Seeing the excited look on children’s faces is really what the Christmas spirit is all about.” The band will continue to spread holiday cheer around the Crystal Coast at the Stars and Stripes for Christmas Annual Christmas Concert at Two Rivers Theater aboard Cherry Point Friday, Morehead City Christmas Parade Saturday and the 15th Annual Down East Christmas Parade in Sea Level, N.C., Sunday.

The Christmas season at Cherry Point began with the annual Christmas tree lighting in front of the Marine Corps Exchange Dec. 4. In its 14th year, the tree lighting brought Marines, Sailors and their families together to mark the start of the holiday season with a showing of “Frosty the Snowman, refreshments and an appearance by Saint Nicholas. “This is a great way to start the holiday season, said Col. Chris Pappas III, commanding officer of Cherry Point. “We are going to have a lot of fun this holiday season and it’s all thanks to the families and communities of Cherry Point for being so supportive. Pappas joined the daughters of Gunnery Sgt. Jeffery D. Bean, the maintenance control chief with Marine Attack Squadron 231, in lighting the Christmas tree. Pappas and the two girls counted down from 10 before flipping the switch to light up the tree. “It’s kind of an honor for my family to be able to participate in lighting the tree, said Bean. “I also think it’s great that they put something like this together for the families to take part in. According to Bean, he is cherishing spending time with his family this year because he was unable to be home last Christmas. “This year it’s different because he was not around this time last year, said Bean’s wife, Melissa. “Him being back makes the season more special this year. The tree lighting is important to families of Cherry Point, especially families with forward deployed Marines and Sailors, because it brings them together during the holidays, said Cassandra Tucker, wife of Gunnery Sgt. Lonnie Tucker, an electronic intelligence intercept operator analyst with Marine Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron 2.
“With events like this, it brings families together so they have a support system since many families are going through the same thing, said Tucker Bringing families together and being around those who care is why the holiday season is important, said Tucker. “During the holiday season it’s important to bring families together, said Tucker. “If you bring everyone together like this, it lifts their spirits.

Holiday Safety De-stress, manage holiday depression PFC. GRACE L. WALADKEWICS MCAS CHERRY POINT
The holiday season should be a joyous time for friends and family to come together and celebrate, but for too many, depression, stress and anxiety go hand-in-hand with the holidays. According to an online survey by the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, nearly threefourths of Americans report feeling more anxious or depressed during the holiday season. The pressures of shopping, cooking and entertaining, coupled with financial and social stressors, can make finding the holiday spirit seem impossible for some. “Being away from home, family or friends, can really be hard for Marines and Sailors during the holiday season, said Navy Capt. Winston Shearin, the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing chaplain. “It is important to keep a close eye on each other, be an active listener and speak up if a problem is recognized. According to the American Psychiatric Association stress, depression and anxiety may be caused by any number of sources. Unrealistic expectations, overcommercialization or the inability to be with one’s family and friends can negatively affect a person’s physical and mental state. Headaches, fatigue and insomnia, as well as overeating and excessive drinking, are all possible signs of holiday linked depression and anxiety.
“Everyone is susceptible to depression and sadness, said Shearin. “Marines and Sailors need to be mission ready at all times and the job always has to get completed no matter how they are feeling so this is an additional layer of stress that the military has to deal with. The reality is that people feel sad all year round, said Shearin. It can just be more difficult and feel more prevalent at a time when society and culture tell us we should be happy. The ADAA offers advice on several ways to reduce stress and combat seasonal depression. Some tips include keeping expectations modest, not overbooking and making time for yourself. Find ways to remember loved ones, even if you can’t be with them. Additionally, the air station chaplains, Military One Source and local behavioral health treatment facilities on and off base are available for those who need help, said Shearin. Always ask for help if you are feeling down or distressed. “Marines and Sailors need to always remember that they are not alone, said Shearin. “There are resources available to help them and the doors are always open. Never keep your feelings to yourself and, if you aren’t the one with the issue, always be open minded and actively listen because you never know what a fellow service member may be going through.

Health Fair educates Marines, Sailors, families LANCE CPL. VICTOR A. ARRIAGA MCAS CHERRY POINT
Physical and mental health is a part of any service member’s life. However, being knowledgeable about healthy lifestyles and habits requires continuous learning. Marines, Sailors and civilians gathered for the annual Semper Fit Health Fair at the Cherry Tree House Friday. Participants received information regarding mental and physical health and spoke to subject matter experts regarding healthy habits and lifestyles. “This type of event allows military personnel and family members a chance to come out and receive information about what is available to them on base and out in town, said Berna Crosby, the special event coordinator for MCCS. “This allows us to bring all the information to them in a more convenient manner. Subject matter experts and military personnel were on hand at the health fair to provide patrons with information regarding physical fitness such as chiropractic rehabilitation centers and educational benefits to work the mind. It is important to be physically fit, but being mentally fit and knowledgeable about education is just as important, said Master Sgt. Fred D. Brock, the personal and professional development representative with Marine and Family Programs.
“We do like to work the mind, said Brock. “Education is one of the things I, and probably a lot of other people, believe makes a Marine mentally fit. In addition to receiving information from different stations at the health fair, patrons were able to participate in a study that simulated what life is like for people with dementia, a chronic disorder of the mental process. The study allowed them to learn about the mental illness. Participants equipped themselves with gear such as ear muffs, to simulate sounds people with dementia may hear. After participants donned the gear, they attempted to perform five simple tasks like setting a table or putting on a sweater. “It was pretty interesting going through that study, and it makes me more understanding of what some people are going through with dementia, said Fallyn Howard, wife of Petty Officer 3rd Class Chavis Howard, a corpsman with the Naval Health Clinic. “It was pretty unpleasant and it made you really think. According to Crosby, it is important to be able to sit down and get information regarding health to avoid complications in the future. “You only get one body and you have to take care of it, said Crosby. “A lot of times people don’t know what they need to do to keep healthy. It’s good to be able to sit and talk with subject matter experts, so there’s nothing better than this.
