2nd MAW CG hosts heroes dinner LANCE CPL. JOSHUA R. HEINS MCAS CHERRY POINT
Six Marines and a Sailor with the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing were honored March 19 for acts of heroism and for playing critical roles while supporting the mission of the Wing. Major General Robert F. Hedelund, commanding general of 2nd MAW, and his wife, Alicia, hosted a heroes dinner at their residence aboard Cherry Point to show their appreciation for the sacrifices the seven made during 2013. “I feel honored to bring this group together,” said Hedelund. “Events like this are what the commandant calls giving back to the Marine Corps, and they represent what the Corps is all about – working together as a team and family.” The honorees and senior leadership from 2nd MAW and Cherry Point recalled the contributions of the heroes during the dinner with a meal prepared by celebrity chef Rick Tarantino and a team of chefs from the Cherry Point Mess Hall. Honoring sacrifice and selfless service is important for service members, said Hedelund. With food and drinks donated by local community businesses, the heroes saw the impact their hard work and dedication has in the community. “These events are the best thing I do all year,” said Tarantino, who has cooked for four consecutive heroes dinners at Cherry Point. “It’s a chance to give back for those who serve us.” Hedelund took time during the event to introduce each honoree and explain their exploits. Pilots with Marine Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron 4 conducted a division lead qualification flight March 19, en route to Marine Corps Air Staion Yuma, Ariz. The squadron conducted the multipurpose flight to give the squadron’s pilots a chance to qualify as division lead with the EA-6B Prowler, while conducting a squadron movement across the country. During a division lead flight, three or more Prowlers fly an assigned mission, which is a rarity for VMAQ-4 pilots. Ordinarily, Prowler crews fly solo missions in support of combat operations. Division lead flights add to the squadron’s expeditionary capabilities, according to Maj. Jeff Bauer, an electronic counter measures officer with the squadron. “The ability to launch a division is important because it demonstrates the squadron’s ability to deploy at a moment’s notice to any place in the world in support of 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing,” said Bauer. The Prowler’s mission is unlike most other Marine Corps aircraft because they usually fly solo. Given the stealth mission of VMAQ-4, the squadron’s pilots are conditioned to flying alone. Division lead flights give the squadron a chance to enhance their team capabilities, according to Maj. Bart E. Macmanus, the administration officer-in-charge at the squadron. “The pilot briefs all of the procedures for what we may encounter because something that we don’t do very often is take more than two aircraft airborne at a time,” said Macmanus. “It’s very rare that we get three or more, and when we do get those three or more airborne, it becomes a very robust training sortie.”

The Easter Season CMDR. PHILIP J. PELIKAN MCAS CHERRY POINT COMMAND CHAPLAIN
Most of the time there are two Easter observances, one by Western Christians (Roman Catholics & Protestants), and another by Eastern Orthodox Christians (Greeks, Arabs, Russians, Romanians, etc.). The reason for this plurality is because, for this holiday in particular, all Orthodox Archdioceses follow the Julian calendar vice the Gregorian calendar, which is the standard for everyone else. This year, however, they coincide. As you read this, 2.2 billion Western and Eastern Christians all over the world are observing a 40 day period of fasting and prayer called “Lent.” Holy Week is the final week of that preparation period when a remembrance is made of the sufferings of Christ prior to the celebration of the highest holy day of the year for Christians, known as Easter, or Pascha, which in Greek means Passover. For 2000 years, Christians of all denominations have observed this holiday and its accompanying seasons, before and after, in various ways and in varying forms, to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, whom they believe is the Son of God and the Savior of the world. Closely connected to the Jewish observance of Passover, when Jews all over the world commemorate their deliverance from slavery in Egypt in which a paschal lamb was killed and its blood was placed over their doorways to protect them from the death angel on the last night before the Exodus, Christians commemorate their deliverance from the slavery of sinfulness and death through the blood of their paschal lamb Jesus Christ. This is what makes the day and the season so special for Christians and Jews, and why it has had such a tremendous impact on many Western and Eastern civilizations, both in a religious and secular sense. It’s not my intention to attempt to convert anyone, but I do think it’s appropriate to reflect for a moment on the meaning and significance of this holiday, and of the seasons surrounding it, especially since nearly 1/3 of the Earth’s population observes it. As I previously mentioned, Western civilization,
and in particular, American civilization has been very much influenced by Christian and Jewish observances and holidays. In some ways American civilization has lost the bubble on the fact that these holidays are more than just single, individual days, but seasons to be reflected upon. The seasons include lengthy periods of preparation and even times of afterglow so-to-speak. Whether or not one believes in the Christian or Jewish significance of this particular season, there is no denying that whatever occurred in history pertaining to this and other seasons of the year, it has had a tremendous impact and a shaping influence on our culture and on us as individuals. Like Christmas, however, because of the commercialization and alleged pagan origins of some of these holidays, some have suggested that they should not be observed at all. But from my personal experience with such groups, eliminating these observances often makes their yearly cycle sort of “flat,” kind of like a soda that’s been left open too long. But these observances mark and continually re-mark the significance of the events they’re supposed to represent. They also serve to perpetuate what I call “cultural memory,” the cumulative tidbits of information that make up the corporate fabric of civilizations and cultures. With the increase of globalization, where elements of many cultures previously not known in the West, like Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, etc., are being added to our culture, it is more important than ever to continue to clearly observe those things that originally formed, or at least heavily influenced our American cultural development. In my family’s tradition, that of Eastern Orthodox Christianity, the afterglow season of Pascha is called Bright Week. It’s a season of feasting and celebrating, as we recall what we’ve learned through our time of fasting and prayer in Lent and Holy Week before the Easter holiday. So please join with me, or at least put up with my continual greetings after the Easter Holiday when I continue to say Happy Easter! It’s just me getting caught-up in the feasting, even when that glorious Sunday passes, I and many others will still be reflecting on its significance in the afterglow of its celebration.

Marines and Sailors at Cherry Point work hard to support the mission of 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. For some Marines, service extends beyond day-to-day duties. Cpl. Alexander Kuhn, an intermediate aviation ordnance technician with Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 14, ordinarily keeps 2nd MAW aircraft weapon systems maintained and ready for flight operations. “I assist with providing aircrews with support for their ammunition systems,” said Kuhn. “I help maintain them and perform all the required maintenance on them to make sure they are ready for use.” Aside from his regular duties, Kuhn volunteers in the local community, an extension of his community involvement before joining the Marine Corps in 2009. “I was a Boy Scout until I turned 18 and that’s really what got me started,” said Kuhn. “Right now I’m a member of the Havelock Moose Lodge and Family Center. I volunteer in their kitchen and I help with their weekly bingo.” Kuhn recently earned recognition for his volunteer efforts assisting the Congressional Medal of Honor Society’s 2013 convention. Maj. Gen. Robert F. Hedelund, commanding general of 2nd MAW, recognized Kuhn Tuesday with a Meritorious Mast for his efforts during the society’s convention. Kuhn excelled as part of a security detail responsible for escorting several VIPs, including former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and former commandant of the Marine Corps James Conway. “I feel honored because I wasn’t expecting anything for volunteering,” said Kuhn.

VMU-2 exercises new expeditionary capability LANCE CPL. JOSHUA R. HEINS MCAS CHERRY POINT
Marine Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Squadron 2 took two RQ-21A Blackjacks to the sky for the first time at Marine Corps Outlying Field Atlantic March 20 and 21. VMU-2 is quickly improving on their ability to provide strategic advantages for the Marine Corps’ UAV program, with the addition of the Blackjack. “This system is for VMU-2,” said 1st Lt. Anthony Atchkey, an unmanned aerial vehicle commander with the squadron. “We will be the first RQ-21 squadron for the Marine Corps.” VMU-2 provides aerial intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance for 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing and II Marine Expeditionary Force. “We provide over-watch to give a warm and fuzzy feeling for the guys on the ground, knowing that somebody
is up there with an eye in the sky taking care of them,” said Atchkey. The RQ-21A brings more flexibility than past UAVs like the RQ-7B Shadow, according to Atchkey. “This platform allows us to be a little more expeditionary,” he said. “Also, with this particular system, the picture is quite a bit clearer and (the RQ-21A) is a whole lot quieter than the old system, which allows us to get a lot closer to the enemy.” The Blackjack is also more field expedient with a more compact launch and retrieval system. “With the past platforms we required a runway,” said Staff Sgt. Joseph Fantz, an unmanned aerial vehicle operator with the squadron. “With the way this system launches and lands it does not require a runway, which enhances the expeditionary capabilities of the Marine Corps.”
The system uses an arresting-wire system, according to Fantz. As the UAV approaches, a hook on the aircraft catches a wire on the retrieval platform, catching and stopping it in mid-flight. This system is very capable to deploy and meet the needs of combatant commanders and troops on the ground, said Fantz. The platform will also provide a smaller footprint, which makes the Blackjack a valuable asset to the Marine Corps, while reinforcing the need for the UAV community as a whole. “The interaction between the software and the pilots works very well,” said Atchey. “The system is a lot more intuitive giving the pilots more ease in the operation. The platform provides better communication than its predecessors. This field is only going to grow for us and (the RQ-21A) is a big jump forward.”

Marines with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit set up communication for a noncombatant evacuation exercise at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan March 19.
MARINE CORPS AIR STATION IWAKUNI, Japan – With propellers still spinning, Marines and Sailors with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit storm out of MV-22 Ospreys, entering a catastrophic situation; citizens are in desperate need of evacuation and are nearly 500 nautical miles away from a safe haven. Service members with the 31st MEU sharpened their skills by conducting a Noncombatant Evacuation Operation certification exercise aboard Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan March 19. Service members with Combat Logistics Battalion 31, who are permanently attached to the 31st MEU, often train for scenarios like NEOs, which transport civilians from hostile or dangerous situations to safe havens. The exercise demonstrated the MEU’s ability to evacuate personnel while maintaining a high level of security with protesters present. “Training like this makes sure the MEU practices its capabilities, gets evaluated and gets a passing grade so they can conduct operations like this during a float,” said Maj. Brad A. Higgins, an air officer with Special Operations Training Group and site officer in charge for the NEO exercise. Iwakuni’s distance from the 31st MEU’s headquarters in Okinawa, Japan, made it an ideal location to utilize the capabilities of the Osprey during the exercise. “This is the first time that we’ve done a long-range NEO,” said Lt. Col. Omar J. Randall, CLB-31 commanding officer and mission commander of the NEO exercise. “By adding the Osprey to our available resources, we greatly improved our ability and extended the operational reach of the MEU.” Compared to the CH-46E Sea Knight it replaced, the Osprey can fly approximately three times farther at twice the speed. The Osprey is also capable of air-to-air refueling, something the Sea Knight could not do. “The MEU is changing with the addition of the Osprey,” said Higgins. “It can go about 500 nautical miles farther than the CH-46.” Randall said that the addition of the Osprey in the Pacific region has proven to be a great asset. During Operation Damayan, which took place in the Philippines after a typhoon in November of last year, the Osprey was able to provide humanitarian relief at a greater rate than ever possible with the CH-46. The addition of the Osprey into the MEU’s arsenal has proven to greatly increase the unit’s operational effectiveness. “By having the Osprey, we have that many more options,” said Randall. “We never know what we are going to get called on to do, so being able to do this type of exercise is really useful for when we get on ship.” Higgins said that familiarizing the Osprey with the Japanese community and showing its capabilities to assist in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, as well as NEOs, will help clear misperception about the aircraft. “The Marine Corps, with assets like the Osprey, proves that we are the premier force in readiness in the (Pacific Command) community,” said Randall. “The fact that we’re able to come off the ship with everything we need and be self-sustaining shows the level of readiness we have. That should say a lot.”

important to him. Kelly is a C-6 quadriplegic due to a spinal cord injury he suffered over 30 years ago. Since then, he has put his time and energy into raising awareness of the sacrifice of wounded and injured service members with his hand-cycling efforts. He started doing marathons in 2008 with a goal of completing 2,008 miles. “I hope to raise money and awareness for wounded service members who have sacrificed so much of themselves and given inspiration to myself and to our country,” he said. Kelly said he participates in approximately 10 marathons and half marathons a year. To train for upcoming races, Kelly rides more than 100 miles a week on his hand-crank bicycle, which, over the years, he has modified to better accommodate his disability. “Once you develop a certain amount of edge, it doesn’t take much to lose that edge,” said Kelly. “For me, it’s like an addiction. I always strive to be at my peak.” He finished Saturday’s race just under 1:40:00.
Although it is not his best half marathon time, Kelly said he stayed motivated, and is happy he was able to complete the race after having difficulties with his handcycle at a race earlier in the year. “I draw a lot of motivation from all the runners,” he said. “If somebody is motivated by my presence or by my effort, that’s all the better. I tend to (ride) a little bit faster with Marines behind me.” Kelly enjoys participating in the various races on different courses at the air station. He hopes the half marathon event continues to grow because it is a good opportunity for people not affiliated with Cherry Point to see what the air station has to offer. After the race, the athlete received congratulations from old friends and other racers. “It’s a beautiful day; I can’t think of anywhere else I would rather be,” he said, with a smile on his face.

US, Spanish Marines train together in Sierra del Retin CAPT. DAVID DAVID SPECIAL-PURPOSE MARINE AIR-GROUND TASK FORCE CRISIS RESPONSE

The training was conducted to further partnerships between SP-MAGTF CR and the European forces.
MORON DE LA FRONTERA, Spain – A platoon of U.S. Marines from Special-Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force Crisis Response conducted bilateral training in Sierra del Retin with their Spanish Marine brethren, March 18-21. BREDEX 14.1 included various tactical and live-fire training events designed to sustain proficiency in marksmanship and infantry skills. This was the first opportunity for the Marines of SP-MAGTF Crisis Response to train with their Spanish counterparts. The exercise began when 4th Platoon, Alpha Company, 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion – the ground combat element for SP-MAGTF Crisis Response – flew into Sierra del Retin via MV-22B tiltrotor Ospreys. “We linked up with the Spanish platoon, and went to a small-arms range,” said 1st Lt. Andrew Youngstrom, the platoon commander for 4th Plt. “We shot M4s, M27s, and M16s. Then we paired up and did some combat marksmanship drills.” Additionally, BREDEX provided both units with the opportunity to practice their interoperability. “This training exercise was integration to the fullest extent,” said Cpl. Joshua Collins, a squad leader with 4th Plt. “A lot of our tactics are pretty similar, so it went hand in hand with the way we work.” The culminating event for the week combined Spanish and U.S. forces. Platoons were mixed by switching one Spanish squad with one American squad. Together, the mixed platoons would have to conduct a coordinated attack on a fortified objective. “They might as well have been our own Marines. It’s like if we took a squad from one of our other platoons and attached it to us,” said Collins. The similarities between the two units allowed them to operate seamlessly together. This was true even with the challenges of a language barrier, according to Collins. “We brought interpreters with us and we also managed to figure out who could translate between English and Spanish,” said Youngstrom. Both groups appeared to enjoy the training, the camaraderie and the international competition. “We’re close to going home, so I think they surprised themselves with how hard they pushed,” said Youngstrom. “They just kept going and going.” Taking opportunities to train with Spanish forces and other partners throughout the region develops the teamwork and interoperability needed to address changing threats in the global security environment. This supports SP-MAGTF Crisis Response’s primary mission of providing a rapid-response force to designated areas in Africa and Europe. “They’re really easy to work with, they have a really good training area, and they know what they’re doing,” said Youngstrom. “It would be an honor to work with them again.”

of reasons, each honoree exemplified the characteristics of self sacrifice and devotion to duty above and beyond what is normally expected. Corporal Emily D. Torres, an administrative specialist with 2nd MAW’s manpower operations section, spends the majority of her weekends volunteering in the local community and was meritoriously promoted to corporal in March 2014. Sergeant Robert D. McCord, an aircraft rescue and firefighting specialist with Marine Wing Support Squadron 272 at New River, recently deployed to Afghanistan and successfully responded to seven firefighting emergencies during the deployment. He also assisted the Army Dustoff, a casualty evacuation unit. McCord flew on eight medical evacuation missions with Dustoff. In addition, he also provided first aid to eight wounded personnel during a mass-casualty incident. For these actions he was awarded a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. Sergeant Tiara D. Horsley, an aviation supply specialist with MWSS-272, was selected by the Onslow County-Jacksonville Military Affairs Committee as the Marine of the Month and earned the Volunteer Service Medal for her steadfast dedication to the community. Horsley also earned recognition as the 2nd MAW noncommissioned officer of the quarter for the fourth quarter of 2013 and was meritoriously promoted to her current rank in November 2013. Petty Officer 2nd Class Christopher A. Patrick, a corpsman with Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 266 at New River, was the casualty evacuation lead petty officer during a deployment with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit. While deployed, Patrick supervised 12 corpsmen and planned and coordinated daily emergency medical training totaling over 160 instruction hours. He was responsible for CASEVAC duty assignments, maintaining 24-hour availability while forward deployed which greatly increased the medical capabilities of the 26th MEU. He planned and coordinated three medical readiness evolutions, periodic health assessments, health record verifications, post deployment HIV blood draws and immunizations which resulted in a sustained 93 percent medical readiness throughout the deployment. Lance Corporal Korxinskee T. Frazier, an automotive maintenance technician with 2nd Low Altitude Air Defense Battalion, was nominated for his outstanding volunteer service. He has volunteered on four separate occasions to construct homes for wounded warriors and amputees. Corporal Ward M. Johnson, a helicopter crew chief with Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 167 at New River, was assigned to the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit during March 2011, when he was awarded his first Air Medal for classified operations in support of NATO forces in Libya. In 2012, due largely to his widely recognized proficiency as a crew chief, he became the squadron’s youngest Weapons and Tactics Instructor. In 2013, Johnson deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, where he was awarded four additional Air Medals with Strike Flight after flying 283 combat missions totaling over 320 hours of combat flight time. Sergeant Mitchell P. Moore, a motor vehicle operator with Marine Wing Support Squadron 273 at New River, reported to MWSS-273 in July 2013 and immediately proved to be an invaluable asset to the squadron as platoon sergeant for the Motor Transport Company transportation platoon. While excelling in the demanding billet, he took on the additional roles of Marine Corps Martial Arts Program chief instructor for the squadron, squadron color sergeant and president of the squadron’s Motorcycle Mentorship Program. When the squadron was inspected as part of the Commanding General’s Readiness Inspection, Moore’s color guard program earned a noteworthy rating and accolades as one of the best color guards reviewed in the Wing. He was recently nominated for meritorious promotion to staff sergeant.
prepare for situations that may include chemical and biological attacks,” according to Grindstaff. Practicing their skills in environments they are not used to will help boost their confidence and prove they have what it takes to employ their missiles no matter the clime or place, said Grindstaff. “This is something they’ve never done before,” he said. “After I did it the first time, I realized it wasn’t hard.” The night conditions and gas masks were not the only things the Marines looked forward to during the training. They also anticipated meeting and greeting with the visitors who came to see the battalion in action and share words of encouragement. “I’m delighted to be able to come down here and spend a few minutes with you all,” said Lt. Gen. Robert E. Schmidle Jr., the deputy commandant for aviation, during an informal conversation he shared with the unit. Maj. Gen. Robert F. Hedelund, commanding general of 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing; Col. Jeff S. Kojac, commanding officer of Marine Air Control Group 28; and Sgt. Maj. Christopher Robinson, sergeant major of 2nd MAW, all attended the training as observers. All attendees said they were amazed at the level of professionalism the Marines displayed. Robinson said it was his first time watching a night shoot and was amazed at how the Marines performed. Their level of expertise and proficiency proves their combat readiness, he said. “There was a point when [LAAD Battalions] were going to go away because there were no missions for them,” he said. “But they have proven that they are needed, [during operation in Iraq and Afghanistan] they are still a viable asset to the Marine Corps.”

MASS-1 families get hands on, learn squadron’s mission LANCE CPL. JOSHUA HEINS MCAS CHERRY POINT
Marine Air Support Squadron 1 hosted their first family familiarization day for the squadron’s families at Cherry Point March 18. More than 70 Marines and family members participated in the activities. Family members toured the air station, heard a presentation about the squadron’s mission from Lt. Col. AnDroy Senegar, MASS-1 commanding officer, and got an up-close look at some of the squadron’s equipment. This was the first time that the squadron conducted a family day focusing on the squadron’s mission and the Marines’ assigned duties, said 2nd Lt. Michael A. Zbonack, the officer-in-charge of the event. “The event is great for the MASS-1 families,” said Zbonack. “It gives them a picture of what our Marines do on a day-to-day basis.” The event gave the squadron a chance to shed light on the squadron’s overall mission to help families better relate to their Marines. Setting normal duties aside, the squadron’s Marines introduced their families to the daily operations inside MASS-1, said Zbonack. “This day is just a great opportunity for the Marines to step back, take their minds off of work and spend some quality time with their families,” said Zbonack. As a support squadron, MASS-1 provides critical air support planning and coordination for 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. To get a snapshot of the squadron’s capabilities, MASS-1 families handled Marine Corps weapons, practiced with night vision goggles and toured a Direct Air Support Center. The DASC is a key component to the mission of MASS-1. The squadron regularly conducts DASC drills to refine their abilities and enhance cohesion. Displaying a DASC and explaining individual Marine’s functions during a DASC drill gave the families a better understanding of one of the squadron’s central roles, according to Zbonack. Family day gives the families the opportunity to see exactly how the squadron supports 2nd MAW and also lets them take a few steps in the boots of a Marine, according to Cpl. David Adling, an aviation communications technician. “The event gave my family a little taste of not only what I do for my job, but the life of a Marine too,” said Adling. “It was the first time my wife actually saw a DASC in person.” The event also provided opportunities for families to meet and interact with other families. Getting families within the squadron together helped them become closer as a whole, said Adrianna Adling, Marine wife of Cpl. Adling. “Right from the start I was meeting new people,” said Adrianna. “I even talked and took a picture with the commanding officer’s wife.” Sgt. Mario Sosa’s son, Nathan, wears a helmet mounted with night vision goggles during MASS1’s family day at Cherry Point March 18. Sosa is an air support operations operator. Marine families with Marine Air Support Squadron 1 tour the inside of a direct air support center at Cherry Point March 18. MASS-1 hosted a family day to give its families a glimpse of the day-to-day operations at the squadron and to help family members meet and get acquainted.
Marines and their families visit MASS-1 during the squadron’s family day event at Cherry Point March 18. The Marines were encouraged to bring their spouses, children and family pets to the event.

LANCE CPL. VICTOR A. ARRIAGA MCAS CHERRY POINT
New Bern’s Military Alliance hosted a luncheon March 13 in honor of Gunnery Sgt. Zane J. Poe and his family, honoring them as the Military Family of the Quarter at the New Bern Golf & Country Club. Poe and his family were recognized for their off-duty volunteer efforts in the community as well as excelling in their current duties. Poe is currently the metrology and calibration chief, and mobile facilities coordinator with Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 2. In addition to his day-to-day duties, Poe serves as the command Uniformed Victim Advocate. He provided more than 40 hours of sexual assault prevention and response training to more than 2,000 Marines and Sailors assigned to Cherry Point this quarter. Additionally, Poe has volunteered more than 80 hours with Creekside Elementary School where his three children attend. Michelle, Poe’s wife, performed more than 96
volunteer hours each quarter with healthcare providers in the local area to help her reach her professional goal as a registered nurse. Also, she is involved in supporting military and civilian families on and off base while helping raise three children. “If I could, I would volunteer more time with the school just to be with my kids, as well as doing all I can to help the students of Creekside succeed, said Poe. Poe hopes his volunteer service resonates with his children so that they can get involved with the community in the future. “As they get older, my wife and I hope to provide them examples of giving back to the community, he said. Poe learned of the Family of the Quarter honors after reading an email from the City of New Bern asking who would attend the luncheon as his guests. The news was a welcomed surprise, according to Poe. “It was truly humbling attending the luncheon and I could never be grateful enough for the support the NBMA showed me and my family, said Poe.
Navy Marine Corps Relief Society - a mother’s story LANCE CPL. VICTOR A. ARRIAGA MCAS CHERRY POINT
After her daughter was born, Jessica McGehee felt knowledgeable and confident. When she found out she was pregnant with her second child, she felt she could easily repeat the process all over again after he arrived. Jessica soon found that babies do not usually follow even the best laid plans. Jessica’s son was born four weeks early at 5 pounds, 12 ounces. She sought help from the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society after having questions about his growth. “I thought I knew everything about feeding because this was my second child, said Jessica. Two days after the birth of her second child, she consulted a doctor to ensure that she had the correct information in regards to lactation consultants. “I left the hospital not feeling like I had enough information, she said. “I needed a second opinion after the hospital told me they didn’t have a lactation consultant. Jessica and her husband, Capt. Michael McGehee, a pilot with Marine Aerial Training Squadron 203, were stationed at Naval Air Station Kingsville, Texas, unaware of the Society’s resources, including lactation consultants. “To be honest, at the time I didn’t even know the NMCRS existed, said Jessica. “I was talking to some of my friends about how the hospital on base didn’t have lactation consultants, and one of them mentioned the society. I had no idea. Jessica immediately contacted the society and was shocked to find out that they offered lactation consultants, classes and help to families with financial hardships. The NMCRS is a non-profit organization established to help service members in need by offering financial assistance and educating service members about financial management and planning. The society also offers baby
blankets and other child care necessities. “When I called, they responded immediately and sent a consultant out, said Jessica. “This woman drove 40 minutes to come to my home, dressed in scrubs and ready to go, just to assist me and my children. She was phenomenal. The McGehee family is only one of thousands of the society’s success stories. More than 65,000 Marines and Sailors throughout the Department of Defense received more than $49 million in financial assistance in 2013. Without the help of volunteers and donations, the society would cease to exist. The NMCRS annual active duty fund drive runs through the month of March across the naval services, educating Marines and Sailors about the society and raising essential funds for its operations. There are several options available to those who want to donate. The preferred, most convenient and most errorfree way to donate is through an allotment. Marines with an end of active service date greater than three months from when the drive starts can log onto Marine Online at www.mol.usmc.mil and set an allotment to support the NMCRS. Paper form allotments are also available and can be obtained through unit representatives. Additionally, anyone interested in making a donation can log onto www.nmcrsfunddrive.org and set up an allotment or set up a one-time donation via credit card. Cash and check donations are also accepted. Contribution forms should be filled out in every case to keep track of command participation. “I think the Society is a phenomenal resource that is completely underexposed and underutilized, said Jessica. “The NMCRS needs to be better known and the fact that this is a group of people that are willing to help those in need is meaningful. To support the NMCRS with a donation, contact your unit representative or go to www.nmcrsfunddrive.org.
