Since 1905, McCallie has remained committed to providing an outstanding college preparatory program for boys. Our own experience, as well as independent research, has shown that secondary education within a single-sex environment offers fewer distractions, allows for a greater number of leadership opportunities and promotes a school culture where boys can achieve without reservation. McCallie features over 50 student-centered organizations and an outstanding array of extracurricular activities that include nationally recognized programs in athletics, arts, and community service. Our students also participate in a coordinate program with Girls Preparatory School (GPS).

McCallie School is dedicated to the academic, physical, spiritual, and emotional growth of boys as they prepare for college and life. The school seeks to inspire and motivate each student to: strive for excellence in every endeavor; pursue intellectual and spiritual truth; lead lives of honor; act responsibly in personal, family, and community relationships; and demonstrate concern for the welfare of others. McCallie students agree to live by an Honor Code that holds each member of the school community to the highest standards of integrity. McCallie expects a boy’s word to be his bond, his work to be his own, and the property of others to be safe around him. Elected officials on the student-run Senate administer the Honor Code.

Seniors, and infrequently juniors, have the OPTION of planning their own course under McCallie’s Independent Study policy, which enables students to pursue unique academic interests that are not offered in the regular curriculum. Most academic departments offer the independent study option or a student may design an interdisciplinary independent study project. Sometimes small groups of students are permitted to work together on an independent study project. Most independent study lasts for one semester. If a student is interested in pursuing independent study, he should first discuss its feasibility with the Academic Dean, who can make suggestions about the plan and about which faculty members might be interested in working with the student. All independent study projects must have a sponsoring faculty member who agrees to monitor the student’s progress and award grades. The student must file an Independent Study Contract with the Academic Dean by May 1 for the Fall semester and by December 1 for the Spring semester.

In addition to the academic requirements, each upper school student is required to participate in some combination of interscholastic sports, personal fitness & conditioning, or other approved extra curricular activities. Completion of this requirement each year earns one “P” credit.
