LEARNING AT McCALLIE Boys have unique ways of learning and developing. Everything we do at McCallie is customized to make learning exciting, engaging and efficient for boys. We carefully study research about how boys’ brains are wired and how they learn. Classrooms are active, hands-on, and often messy, honoring boys’ propensity for kinesthetic and visual learning. Boys have opportunities for movement, collaboration, and crashing into ideas and sometimes even each other. Learning is guided by teachers and advisors who see their work as a calling and who care first and foremost about their boys. Boys are inspired to give their best effort because they know and feel the love their teachers have for them. The comprehensive and challenging curriculum is carefully designed to develop the skills, knowledge, habits and mindsets needed to thrive and lead in today’s diverse and dynamic world. As critical and creative thinkers, McCallie boys research and analyze; they ideate and prototype; they collaborate and communicate. They are innovators and engineers using cutting-edge learning tools in state-of-the-art facilities.

MIDDLE SCHOOL The transition from sixth-grader to eighth-grader is stunning. Boys grow at a breakneck pace, but not just in the physical sense. Studies suggest that these years are critical in helping boys develop the instinct to be a lifelong learner. McCallie’s Middle School is purpose-built to engage a young boy. Life in McDonald Hall will keep him active and inquisitive and teach him that he is an important part of the larger community around him. He will learn that his efforts with his peers in the classroom, on the athletic field, in the practice room and in the community can produce impressive results as he prepares for the academic and social challenges of his high school years.

THE CITY OF CHATTANOOGA It’s only fitting that a school as unique as McCallie should be in a city as unique as Chattanooga. It’s a city recognized nationally and internationally for its transformation into a technology hub while also being a long-standing paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Boys at McCallie have opportunities to immerse themselves in the wide array of activities that Chattanooga and the region offer. Four full-time staff members coordinate activities for boys that range from outdoor adventures to exposure to the city’s thriving arts and music scene. We emphasize to boys the importance of participation in activities - from athletics to leadership activities and music and arts to academic clubs. It’s not only for their own improvement, but also to help them learn the value of contributing to something larger than themselves. It is our goal that every boy leaves McCallie as a man who is experienced, well-rounded and self-aware.

FAITH & SERVICE MCCALLIE MAKES COMMUNITY SERVICE AND SPIRITUAL ENRICHMENT A CENTRAL PART OF SCHOOL LIFE. From the front gate of campus emblazoned with the school motto, “Man’s chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever,” to the ever-present reminders of the school’s core values of Honor, Truth and Duty, boys are immersed in the idea of living lives of purpose and service. Students take leadership roles in Chapel programs three times each week and boarding students also attend either off-campus worship or on-campus vestry services each weekend.
THE HONOR CODE McCallie students agree to live by an Honor Code that holds each member of the school community to the highest standards of integrity. McCallie expects a boy’s word to be his bond, his work to be his own, and the property of others to be safe around him. Elected officials of the student-run Senate administer the Honor Code.

ATHLETICS The ultimate victory is achieved not only by playing the game well, but also by dedicating oneself to play the game with sportsmanship and character. From competitive interscholastic sports to fun and fitness, McCallie’s athletic programs have a space for every boy. We strive to provide students with opportunities to compete successfully, and we believe winning is the natural byproduct of a focus on skill development, sportsmanship, teamwork, effort, resilience and goal setting. The special relationships boys build with their teachers and coaches help our students learn defining values while representing McCallie with honor.

ARTS & MUSIC Fine arts, music, art, and drama play a critical role in the journey to becoming a McCallie Man. While at McCallie, boys are required to take fine arts classes in both middle and high school. McCallie’s commitment to the arts starts in the classroom, but the opportunities reach far beyond there, with multiple choral and instrumental groups, art offerings from pottery to painting to sculpture and a comprehensive drama program. McCallie is a place where boys have the freedom to explore their full range of interests, and in doing so, to discover something new about themselves. Student and faculty advisors encourage students to try new activities and find their passion. At McCallie, boys are respected for their academic achievement, artistic talent and athletic prowess, and boys often pursue all three.

OUTDOOR PROGRAM THE POSSIBILITIES FOR ADVENTURE AT MCCALLIE ARE VIRTUALLY ENDLESS. Being based in Chattanooga, which Outside Magazine declared the “Best. Town. Ever.” twice for its massive array of outdoor activities, means that McCallie boys’ outdoor aspirations are limited only by their imaginations. World-class hiking trails to Olympic-level rapids and sought-after climbing routes are all a stone’s throw away from campus, and McCallie’s outdoor program offers full-time staff, training and equipment to help boys make the most of their time outdoors. The program features afternoon, day and weekend climbing, biking, hiking and kayaking trips throughout the Chattanooga area and the Southeast, as well as longer trips during school breaks to locations around the country and world. McCallie also offers a varsity rock climbing team that competes regionally.
