Tips on Reducing Your Energy Bill As we enter the winter season, we have a lot of opportunity to waste energy, and money. But by using energy efficiently, there are many benefits, and you will find yourself saving money and helping the environment. There are many things you can do to be more energy efficient in the winter time, and most of them are extremely simple.

Thermostat One of the best things you can do in the winter to conserve energy is to set your thermostat to a low temperature at which you are still comfortable. Keeping it at about 68 degrees when you are awake and lowering it when you go to sleep is a great tool for efficiency. With a programmable thermostat you can adjust the temperature of your home automatically.

Check Windows Another great trick you can use to improve your efficiency is to check your windows and doors for air leaks and seal them with caulk or weather stripping. This method for conservation is extremely economical and is also very simple, so you will be able to maintain it without breaking the bank or your back.

Furnace and Ducts Have your furnace checked up on each year so you will be able to ensure it is as efficient as possible, and be sure to change your filters regularly. Dirty filters can seriously decrease the efficiency of your heating system while also costing you more money. But cleaning and replacing filters is a truly easy fix. You should also check your ducts for leaks and clean your heat registers. IF these registers are currently blocked by furniture or other items, you should remove those items to increase efficiency. Be careful to only use your exhaust fans when they are necessary so you can avoid wasting money and heat, by throwing it literally out of your house.

Fans One amazing thing you can do to decrease your energy costs is to switch the rotation of your fans. Counter clockwise motion spreads cool air, and clockwise motion spreads warm air. So, in the winter season, you should have your fans rotate in the clockwise direction to optimize the flow of warm air in your home. When the winter season ends, and we transition back into summer temperatures, it will become more important to ready your house for summer temps. Many of the wintertime rules can simply be reversed for the summer months, like the direction of your fan, for example.

Also, as it heats up, it is a good idea to keep your window coverings closed in the day time and open at night so you can release hot air, and collect cool air and decrease your need for air conditioning.
