GED (GENERAL EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT)
MCC Adult Education is a program sponsored jointly by the Nebraska State Department of Education and the College. This program is for adults 18 years of age or older; however, those who are at least 16 years of age and are not enrolled in a regular high school program may enroll with special permission from the Nebraska State Department of Education. This program offers students the opportunity to develop basic reading, writing and math skills. There are no fees for GED classes.
This program also consists of GED preparation classes that prepare adults for the General Education Development examination, a nationally standardized test of high school equivalency. There is an application fee for the high school diploma and a testing fee. The high school diploma is issued by the Nebraska Department of Education upon successful completion of the examination.
The GED exam consists of the following four timed tests:
• Reasoning through language arts (150 minutes)
• Social studies (90 minutes)
• Science (90 minutes)
• Mathematical reasoning (115 minutes)
GED classes are offered at locations throughout the Omaha metro area. Two program pathways for GED are available — enrollment-based and open learning classes.
The enrollment-based classes require students to:
• Attend an Adult Education information session.
• Take an introductory three-week course [the Transitional Learning Community].
• Complete Nebraska Department of Education paperwork.
• Complete an interview.
• Complete computer literacy education components.
• Take periodic CASAS testing.
• Attend class daily.
This program should be considered by students who have the highest level of commitment in terms of time, dedication and discipline.
MCC Adult Education also offers open learning opportunities for students who need more learning flexibility and who are not currently able to adhere to strict requirements of attendance and periodic testing found in the enrollment-based classes. Opportunities in this pathway include:
• Open enrollment classes so students may attend and participate as their schedules permit
• Self-paced GED prep classes
• No requirements for attendance or testing
MCC is authorized by GED Testing Service to provide official GED testing. Additional information regarding MCC Adult Education and GED classes can be obtained by calling the Adult Education office at 531-622-4060.
