In 1968, President Johnson initiated the observance of Hispanic Heritage Month. President Reagan adjusted the observance to cover September 15 through October 15 to commemorate the independence of several Latin American countries. Our nation, based on inclusion, benefits from the merging of all cultures and the Marine Corps is richer as a result. The Marines highlighted are Americans of Hispanic heritage that have paved a path of inspiration for all Americans to emulate. NASA selected Lieutenant Colonel Carlos Noriega, born in Peru, for the astronaut program. He logged 481 hours in space and performed three space walks. Last month I mentioned Major General Angela Salinas as the highest-ranking female in the Marine Corps, she is also the highest-ranking Marine of Hispanic heritage. Lieutenant General Pedro del Valle is another high-ranking American of Hispanic heritage to serve as inspiration to all Americans. Inspiration comes from all levels of our Corps, in just two years of service (1899 – 1901); Private France Silva earned a Medal of Honor for his efforts in the Boxer Rebellion. The cover story, written by a Marine in our community, focuses on combat endurance, preparing our Marines physically is just one aspect of what MCCS offers our community. The article is a unique look at Semper Fit offerings that relate to Marine training. In addition to the cover story, this issue provides our monthly comprehensive calendar of events as well as reminders for the Boys and Girls Club Day for Kids on September 21 and the South of the Border Buffet at Club Iwakuni on September 20. Be sure to stop by our Summer Music Festival at Penny Lake on September 7, enjoy music and fireworks as our community wraps up the summer with a cookout and great activities for the whole family. As we begin the fourth quarter of another great year here in Iwakuni, I encourage everyone to take advantage of the activities both inside and outside of our gates. On September 22, our host nation family joins us for the Goodwill Triathlon, join the competition or cheer on the athletes. This event joins our cultures in sport. We are very fortunate to have a range of offerings available to us here in Japan. MCCS features several resources to plan and enjoy our installation as well as our host nation. Have a great month and be safe. We are here for you.

TYPHOON READINESS

4

If you are from Miami or certain other parts of the United States, you might be familiar with hurricanes. In Japan, these violent tropical cyclones are called typhoons, and they can hit here often, rating as one of the most serious naturally recurring disasters to strike the islands. Since Iwakuni is located in a temperate area, typhoons are likely to reach here when at their peak or within close proximity. Areas of low pressure developing in the tropics are called tropical cyclones and when their wind speed reaches more than 17 meters per second, they are called typhoons. The number of typhoons hitting Japan varies from year to year. A year with relatively few typhoons results in a scarcity of water, while on the other hand a year with many typhoons sees heavy damage to the area, with strong winds, heavy rainfall and high waves.

TYPHOON WARNING LEVELS

A typhoon is a tropical cyclone with winds equal to or greater than 74 miles per hour. There is no difference between a typhoon and a hurricane other than where they occur in the world. To let people know when a typhoon is going to come ashore, MCAS Iwakuni uses Tropical Cyclone Condition of Readiness alerts. The alerts go from TCCOR 4 to TCCOR 1 and there are others for after a typhoon has passed. TCCOR 4 is the lowest and means that a typhoon is within 72 hours of the base while TCCOR 1 means the s tor m ha s ar r i ve d . T he TCCOR level is determined by using information provided by numerous government agencies who have been tracking the storm. Disruption of utility ser vices (e.g. electricity) may occur as early as storm onset and last up to hours (or sometimes days and even weeks) after typhoon passage. Long before a typhoon arrives, people should prepare a disaster readiness kit. This kit should include three days worth of supplies such as food, water, batteries, radio and other essential items.

TRAVEL ARTICLE

SPACE-A TRAVEL Alexandra Patrocino, LifeSkills Trainer Did you ever t h ink you’d have t he oppor tunit y to v isit Thailand or the Philippines? How about Australia or Guam? For most of us, we never thought we could afford the opportunity to visit these extraordinary countries. Well, we are living in Japan - so why not? Our active duty spouses visit surrounding countries because of trainings and TADs, and so can we! Being affiliated with the military provides many perks that we are all aware of: health care, job stability, COLA, BAH, discounted tickets/ hotels, the list goes on. But did you know that we can also fly to many different countries here in the Asian Pacific? We can even fly to the United States from Iwakuni for less than $30 per person! This is all through the Space-A (Available) travel system which we have the privilege to enjoy. Space-A can seem intimidating at first, but it is manageable. In a nutshell, authorized passengers can occupy DOD unused seats after all space-required passengers have been accommodated. Whether you get a seat or not is determined by a variety of factors, one being the date and time you sign up on the waitlist. You’re then assigned a category depending on your specific circumstances.

C AT EG ORY I .

WHICH CATEGORY WILL YOU FALL UNDER? Active duty service members and their accompanying families traveling on emergency leave.

C AT EG ORY II . C AT EG ORY III . C AT EG ORY I V. C AT EG ORY V. C AT EG ORY V I .

Service members and their accompanying family members traveling on EML (Environmental Moral Leave, you get 2 a year). This includes command-sponsored family members who are stationed outside the continental United States (OCONUS). Service members and their accompanying families traveling on ordinary leave or reenlistment leave status, and unaccompanied family members of service members deployed 365 consecutive days or more. This category also includes service members and their families on house-hunting leave. Unaccompanied family members on EML orders and eligible family members of service members deployed 120 days or more. Students whose sponsor is stationed in Alaska or Hawaii and students enrolled in a trade school within the continental United States (CONUS) when the sponsor is stationed overseas. Retirees and their accompanying family members. This category also includes Guard and Reserve members who are traveling within CONUS, Alaska, Hawaii, and U.S. territories.

ONCE YOU’VE DECIDED YOU WANT TO USE SPACE A, HERE ARE SOME HELPFUL TIPS TO KNOW: 1

Have your documents with you.

4

Bring snacks and water, these usually aren’t provided on the planes.

5

Try to fly when schools are in session. The busiest times to f ly - meaning fewer available seats - are during holidays and summer vacation.

6

Prepare for long delays. Flights can be delayed for hours or even days. You might think you are going on a quick trip to Okinawa, but be prepared for any possibility. You could end up staying there for a few extra days because a plane is down, going through unexpected maintenance, or lack of Space-A seats. Sometimes flights make unscheduled stops or are rerouted.

7

Bring cash and credit cards. You'll want to have enough money to buy a commercial plane ticket home or pay for a hotel room if necessary. You might wind up staying a few more days than you planned or have to take a commercial flight back.

• Military ID • Copy of your leave orders (for emergency leave, EML, or ordinary leave passengers) • Passport and appropriate Visas • If applicable: DD Form 1853 (Verification of Reserve Status for Travel Eligibility) and a letter verifying your eligibility if you are an unaccompanied family member whose service member is deployed for 120 days or more.

2

Be flexible. As a Space-A passenger, you could fly on a comfortable passenger plane - or in the cargo hold of a C-130.

3

If you’re flying on a C-130: • Car seats are allowed on the aircraft. You will have to change diapers on the fold down long “bench”. There are no individual seats. • Bring a sweatshirt, it is cold! Also, wear closed-toe shoes - it’s a cargo plane. • Sometimes there is a toilet. Toilet, not a bathroom. As in, there is a random toilet off in the corner. Consider yourself lucky if the crew puts up a curtain. • Bring noise cancelling headphones for you and your kids (infant too). It is loud, very loud. • Hold on. When the plane takes off or lands, you will not only feel the dip and incline but you will actually slide in either direction.

8

Pack lightly. Luggage allowance will depend on the type of aircraft you’re on. By limiting your luggage, you'll be able to board any available flight to your destination.

If you have any questions or concerns, call the Terminal at 253-5509. They are very helpful and will try their best to accommodate your needs. You can also “Like” Iwakuni Passenger Terminal on Facebook for updates and information. The terminal posts the next day’s flight schedule on the Commanders Channel on AFN every evening. Additionally, look out for the Space-A Travel Brief Marine Corps Family Team Building hosts at Yujo Hall once a quarter. The next Space-A Travel Brief will be held on November 13, 11 AM - Noon. This is a great opportunity for you to learn more about the Space-A travel program and have all your questions answered by a Terminal representative.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF CYCLING By Andrea Kawano

C

ycling is one of the easiest ways to exercise, and you can ride almost anywhere, anytime of the year, indoors or out without spending a fortune. Here are few reasons to consider investing in a bike or dusting off the one you already own. Builds strength & increases muscle tone Cycling gradually improves general muscle function, with little risk of over exercise or strains. Regular cycling strengthens leg muscles and is great for the mobility of hip and knee joints. Cycling regularly will improve the muscle tone of your legs, thighs, hamstrings and hips. Improves cardiovascular fitness Studies have shown that cycling will increase cardiovascular fitness by 3-7%. Because cycling uses the largest muscle group, it will raise your heart rate enough to build stamina and fitness. Burns Calories Cycling is a great way to lose those extra pounds. Steady cycling burns approximately

8

300kcal per hour. If you cycle for 30 minutes every day, combined with a healthy diet, you can burn 11lbs of fat a year. Since it also builds muscle, you'll feel the effects of a boosted metabolic rate long after you’ve finished your ride. Reduces stress Any regular exercise can reduce stress, depression and improve well being and selfesteem. Cycling outdoors is a good way to become with nature and feel the breath of the earth. It takes one’s mind off the stress of everyday-life and rejuvenates the soul. Improves heart health A cc ord i ng t o t he A me r ica n Hea r t Association, cycling just 20 miles a week can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease by 50%. Remember, cycling is base training, which means it provides endurance and aerobic training at the same time. Other activities such as circuit training and weight training can be incorporated to complement the benefits of cycling. Always start slow and gradually increase. Beginners should start riding 2 times a week

KIDS RUN IWAKUNI

By: Kelly Palmer, Community Writer

I

picked up my 5-year-old son from a Kids Run the Nation session last spring and he was thrilled to share his mileage for the day. When we saw the launch of the program aboard MCAS Iwakuni, my husband and I were excited about the opportunity for our son to learn about the basics of running and fitness. The MCCS Health Promotions staff used fun games and competition to encourage youth ages 5-18 to develop healthy lifestyles. The program focused on increasing endurance and overall athletic performance. Although I know my son's 50-mile run was an exaggeration of the truth, throughout the program we watched him develop a love for a sport we both enjoy.

GET SOME GET SOME GET SOME COMBAT ENDURANCE GET SOME TRAINING FOR THE COMBAT FITNESS TEST By Jose Montanez. CFT, SFN, SSC, YFT – ISSA

M C C S I WA K U N I . C O M |

SEPTEMBER 2013

“THE BEST RESULT WILL COME FROM EVERYONE DOING WHAT IS BEST FOR THEMSELVES AND THE GROUP.” – John Nash

A United States Marine is responsible for meeting all physical challenges, to include height and weight standards, successfully completing the Physical Fitness Test (PFT) a nd Com bat F it ness Test (CF T ), com bat training, and any other physical requirement established by the Commander. Training to achieve this level of fitness is different for every Marine. PFT - Marines need to address any weaknesses or muscle imbalances that may prevent them from performing well. The Marine should have a progressive workout plan addressing all the major muscles groups of the upper body, i.e. chest, back, and shoulders. The Combat Fitness Test (CFT) is a series of physical fitness activities that simulate a combat situation. The CFT sets a minimum standard of physical combat readiness across the force. Leaders are tasked to train their Marines above that standard. The activities are (1) movement to contact (2) ammunition (ammo) can lift and (3) maneuver under fire. Movement to contact is an 880-meter sprint. It simulates a Marine’s quick reaction to enemy contact. The ammo can lift is a test of strength, endurance and mental fatigue and transitions to the final, maneuver under fire event. This event challenges the Marines to quickly cover a short distance and incorporates a high and low crawl simulating movement under fire while keeping a low profile, evasion of obstacles, the removal of a casualty from the danger zone and ammunition resupply in the least amount of time possible. Marine CFT training needs to be explosive. Marines need to improve their power output and get more work done in less time in order to perform well. The activities need to be specific to the events encountered during the CFT. Working on lifts such as the snatch, clean and split jerks are great exercises for building the explosive power needed for the ammo can

20

AMMO CAN LIFT lift. Repetitive lifting of a 30-lb ammo can or a 30-lb dumbbell will develop the endurance required for a successful score in this event. The muscle fibers are broken down with each lift and as the fibers recover, they adapt to the activity. For the movement to contact or 880-meter spr i nt event , speed or spr i nt i nter va l s are effective forms of training. The FITT (frequency, intensity, time, and type) principle prevents stagnation. Adjust one factor at a time. If one week you change your frequency, the intensity and time of the activity should stay the same. An example of this type of t ra i n i ng is spr i nt i ng 400 meters i n one minute and 30 seconds with one minute of rest the first week. The following week you may attempt to sprint 400 meters in less time; therefore, increasing the intensity. This training will result in improved cardiovascular activity and is effective form of fat loss.

combat training. Marines need to be specific in training, but must not neglect other areas of fitness. Marines must train all energy pathways to maximize results. It is imperative that leaders receive training i n f it ness, w o rko ut p r og r a m m i ng a nd assessments. Training in fitness enables leaders to understand the human body, its physiology and kinesiology. This improves the specificity of physical training activities. Workout program training enables leaders to prepare a routine that benefits the Marine and the section as a whole. This improves combat effectiveness because every member of the team will be physically fit and the team will be effective as a unit. Training in assessments is essential in identifying weaknesses and preparing a workout program that addresses those weaknesses. Assessments provide a baseline to measure progress. Leaders benefit from fitness training and education. The benefit extends beyond the individual, to positively impact the unit as a whole. This training empowers Marines

400 YARDS OF "MANEUVER UNDER FIRE"

FIREMAN'S CARRY For the maneuver under fire event, Marines can strengthen their lower body and core to improve results. Exercises such as the dead lift, squats and cleans will help develop the strength required to pick up a casualty. Heavy walking lunges, step ups and sprinting with added resistance on the body, i.e. carry a dummy, sandbag, or a partner, will provide the overload necessary to properly train for the fireman’s carry of a casualty over 75 yards. Doing speed intervals with ammo cans, kettle bells or dumbbells weighing at least 30-lbs will be ideal for the ammo resupply portion. Core exercises involving both the abdominal muscles and hip flexors, such as the mountain climbers, cross body mountain climbers and spider-man pushups, will help with the high and low crawl portion.

trained in fitness would be able to properly assess a M a r i ne, ident i f y def iciencies, correct imbalances, implement a sound and progressive workout plan, monitor progress and adjust for continued improvement.

In order for a Marine to meet their height a nd weight sta nda rd t hey must engage i n physica l act iv it y a nd ma i nta i n a hea lt hy d iet. A noncom m issioned (NCO) or staff noncommissioned officer (SNCO) is responsi ble for prov id i ng g u ida nce, direction and supervision regarding the M a r i ne’s wel l bei ng. A n NCO or SNCO

Marines need to train for the unexpected when it comes to com bat t ra i n i ng. T h is involves training physically while causing mental fatigue in order to develop resiliency and confidence. The latter factors will give the Marines and their leadership the tools to succeed in any environment. When completed as a team, trust and cohesiveness increases. Developing a plan that will incorporate the st reng t hs a nd add ress t he wea k nesses of each member of the team within a team activity is crucial. High intensity interval t ra i n i ng w i l l ma ke a posit ive d i f ference in the following scenario; a fire team size element or a four-man team has two members that can run rather fast but lack strength while the other two members are relatively strong, but not quite as fast. The team will benefit from carrying additional weight for a pre-determined distance. The team would identify their strengths and weaknesses, apply a strategy to accomplish the mission, all of which would develop communication and leadership in addition to achieving the goal. This exercise incorporates the concept of high intensity interval training.

LOW CRAWL / HIGH CRAWL

AMMUNITION RESUPPLY

High intensity interval training is effective for improv ing a ll components of fitness, strength, power, speed, endurance, flexibility and agility. The Marine Corps has made High Intensity Tactical Training available on most bases. This type of high intensity interval training is geared for activities in combat. It complements the physical fitness factor of

The Healthy, HungerFree Kids Act of 2010 is the legislation that authorizes funding and sets policy for USDA’s child nutrition programs such as the NSLP, based on the latest Dietary Guidelines for Americans. AAFES offers the Exchange Meal Program that allows us to provide wholesome, nutritious meals to eligible students in DOD OCONUS schools participating in the NSLP. For the Parents of children attending either one of our MC Perry schools, this is a load off of their already full plate. Parents can ease their minds knowing that their children are establishing good eating habits and have a variety of meals to meet their needs. The AAFES Exchange Meal Program creates a diverse menu

In addition to modifying our program to meet the new USDA guidelines, the School Meal Program is continually striving to reduce fat, sodium and sugar in the foods served and promote whole grain, fruit and vegetable consumption.
