WHO WE ARE

JAMES CEPHAS

POSITION: AUTOMOTIVE CENTER MANAGER “The ability to help improve the quality of life for the servicemember, their families and the community as a whole is what I enjoy the most about my job.”

DIRECT DIRECTOR from the

I want to start off by saying goodbye to the many great friends and neighbors who transferred to new Commands this summer; it was ver y sad to see them go. We look for ward to meeting the new arrivals and fostering new friends and relationships. As our population increases this summer there will be many questions about changes around the base. Our feature article this month explains a few base expansion projects; we hope the information answers some of your questions. The construction on base is not the only new addition to the base. MCCS is proud of our new addition to Crossroads Food Court. Bulldog’s Southern Style BBQ opens just in time for the Independence Day, 96 hour liberty; stop by or pick up your order to enjoy at your favorite summer recreation location. Also Club Iwakuni has added “Steak Night” to their list of weekly themes so please take advantage of these new food venues. I also want to inform you about potential changes happening within MCCS, like ever y where else our funding is being cut in support of many programs. We are holding the line to continue providing free swimming and continued free issue of outdoor recreation equipment. Please take full advantage of these facilities this summer. Marine Corps Family Team Building also had their staff recently reduced by Headquarters; many of the additional ser vices they were providing such as Dine like a Diplomat and Semper Style, had to be eliminated. I will keep the community informed of any changes to our ser vices as decisions are made by our Base Commander, Regional Commander and Headquarters Marine Corps. On July 4, 1776, Congress signed the Declaration of Independence. Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence two days earlier, the Declaration ser ved to explain the decision to approve the resolution. Independence and the concept of respecting the liberties of our diverse citizenship are close to our hearts as Americans; these ideals gave birth to our home and have continued to guide us as a nation. As we prepare to celebrate July 4, please take a moment to reflect upon the founding principles that gave birth to the USA! MCCS has many activities and good deals planned for the 4th of July so please enjoy the day. If you are not travelling this summer, MCCS has great opportunities to gain valuable experience and earn a little extra money! Many positions at Crossroads Food Court start at $9.60 per hour, not bad for a parttime job. We have developed team members to progress from sales associates to managers and some have advanced to director positions in the organization. If your time is limited and your schedule not as flexible, our Volunteer Internship Program (253-3030) is a great option to gain practical experience with a flexible schedule and add to your resume. We offer plenty of ways for community members to join the team and benefit from the mentorship of our professional team. The summer trips continue throughout July with Information Tours and Travel (253-4377). From July 3-8, enjoy the Tokyo Fun Trip, July 4-6 challenge yourself with Ninja Training, July 7 sign up for Disney on Ice in Hiroshima and July 21 sign up for the Hello Kitty and Harmony Land trip. The MCCS Single Marine Program (253-3585) is hosting a trip for our single and unaccompanied Marines to climb Mount Fuji and explore Tokyo July 13-18. In addition to the great trips, check out the many activities our MCCS team has planned in the calendar of events on page 40. As always, we are “Here to Ser ve”, working together for a better community. Enjoy this month’s issue, enjoy the summer fun and above all stay safe. “Semper Fi” John Iwaniec Marine Corps Community Ser vices Director

There is also a pretty good selection of soy milk off base. A variety of flavors are offered, from plain soy milk to banana flavored soy milk and coffee flavored soy milk. I’ve seen some pretty interesting ones out in town. If you prefer organic soy milk, they have that too!

花 FIREWORKS safety 火 COMMUNITY ARTICLE

by Simon Catling, Safety Inspector

F

ireworks, (Hanabi, literally, "flower fire") have a long history in Japan. They were originally used to ward off evil spirits and now displays are an integral part of Japanese summers. Festivals are held in towns all over Japan during July and August, giving you many opportunities to witness this dazzling spectacle. When planning a trip to view a fireworks display, keep the following in mind: Arrive early. The larger festivals are very popular and all the good viewing spots will be snatched up hours in advance. This is not all bad news however, as many of the best views are to be had far away from the launch area, just make sure your view is not obstructed by buildings or smoke. If possible, walk to your viewing spot. Once the fireworks display has ended, everyone will leave to go home. Buses and trains can be very crowded and traffic will be congested. Don’t take your pets. Fireworks upset pets as a result of the noise, smell of sulfur, and flashing lights. Leave your faithful companion at home.

Consumer fireworks for personal use are sold in many stores during the summer and they are a great way to enjoy summer, but without all the crowds. If you do choose to enjoy fireworks, just remember that they are not allowed on base for personal use (MCASO P11320.6D) but there is nothing preventing you and family or friends using them off base.

FOLLOW THESE TIPS TO ENSURE A SAFE EVENING FOR ALL: • Parents and caretakers should always closely supervise teens if they are using fireworks. • Parents should not allow young children to handle or use fireworks. • Fireworks should only be used outdoors. • Set off the fireworks on a hard, flat surface away from anything flammable. • Always have water ready (a hose or bucket).

• Know your fireworks. Read the caution label before igniting. • Alcohol and fireworks do not mix. Have a designated “shooter”. • Use common sense. Spectators should keep a safe distance from the shooter and the shooter should wear safety glasses. • Never relight a “dud” firework. Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water.

• Soak spent fireworks with water before placing them in an outdoor garbage can. • Only use fireworks as intended. Don't try to alter them or combine them. • Avoid storing fireworks for extended periods. If you must store them, keep them in a cool, dry place. • Don't using homemade fireworks or illegal explosives: They can kill you!

AND NOTE THESE SPECIAL SAFETY TIPS, IF USING SPARKLERS: Safety information is drawn from the National Council on Fireworks Safety.

• Always remain standing while using sparklers. • Never hold a child in your arms while using sparklers. • Never hold, or light, more than one sparkler at a time. • Never throw sparklers. • Sparkler wire and stick remain hot long after the flame has gone out. Be sure to drop spent sparklers in a PHOTO BY EMMA GRAVES

bucket of water. • Teach children not to wave sparklers, or run while holding sparklers.

MCAS Iwakuni is going through massive renovations right now. The base is taking advantage of water conservation techniques by inst alling low water use fixtures (like toilets and shower heads), installing water meters on buildings to determine how much water is being consumed, and other features. We may not have a problem with droughts or scarcity of water in Japan, but producing good, drinkable water still takes a lot of time, money and energy. So where does the water you drink come from?

8cooking safety tips COMMUNITY ARTICLE

s d i k r o f

It’s that time of year again; the kids are out of school and hungry. Teaching your kids to cook not only lessens the load on you, but it also teaches them important life skills and self-reliance. (How many of you wish that your own spouse had been taught to cook?)

Enter the microwave. It’s fast, easy, clean, and has no open flames that might start a fire. Perfect for the kids to make their own snacks or meals, right? Not so fast. Did you know that common oven related injuries are scald burns from the microwave, occurring in children under 5 years of age? This doesn’t mean that kids shouldn’t use the appliance; they just need a little guidance in order to be safe.

A great rule of thumb i s that if a child i sn’t old enough to read and understand the food preparation

Show them how to open the containers pointing away from their face so that the escaping steam does not burn them. How many times have you gotten burned opening that microwave popcorn that smell s so good?

With just a little patience up front, soon your kids can be making their own lunch while you put your feet up and, dare I say, read a book or just relax? That’s reason enough to get them on the road to cooking for themselves! In a few years, they’ll be baking you cookies and eventually cooking your Thanksgiving turkey. Well, we can dream.

Enjoy
