First of all, I would like to thank Colonel Boucher for hosting such an outstanding Friendship Day. With the help of our volunteers, MCCS was able to provide various foods and amusements to our Japanese friends and neighbors. The teamwork I witnessed at each work center was remarkable; positive attitudes and great customer ser vice were evident throughout the day. Many thanks for making this event an over whelming success! Now that summer is in full swing, I encourage ever yone to enjoy the great outdoor activities and trips while stationed here in Japan. MCCS Cultural Adaptation (253-6161) is a great resource to help enjoy some of our local adventures. On June 15, you can experience Rice Planting with members of our local community. On June 21, Outdoor Recreation (253-3822) will host an Archer y Trip. And don’t forget, Outdoor Recreation has a wide variety of gear available for the independent explorer from novice to pro level. June is recognized as Men’s Health Month and Semper Fit has a variety of events promoting awareness of men’s approach to staying healthy and fit. Throughout the month of June, Health Promotions (253-6359) hosts the 100 Mile Fitness Challenge; Intramural Sports (253-3067) will have the Capture the Flag Challenge on June 20 as well as the Summer Basketball Tournament on June 28. On June 15, treat Dad to a Father’s Day Brunch made just for him at Club Iwakuni (253-3363). We welcome writers in our community to write for the MCCS Preview magazine. Local writers have contributed a variety of articles that ser ve to educate and entertain in this issue, such as Camping in Japan, Volunteering in the Local Community, and Recycling. We also lighten things up with an article describing the excitement of attending a Japanese Baseball Game. We bring a little something for ever yone in this issue and our programs provide a diverse range of activities to enjoy this month. Have fun exploring Japan this summer and stay safe!

JAPANESE BASEBALL GAMES My very first experience at a Japanese baseball game was at the old Hiroshima C a r p S ta d i u m l o c a te d next the SOGO department store in downtown Hiroshima. I’m not a huge baseball fan, but had heard from quite a few of my friends that the games were a lot of fun so I decided to find out what all of the fuss was about. Baseball and fun are not two words I would have used in the same sentence before I went to a Japanese baseball game, but I had a blast! The atmosphere was amazing and exciting and FUN! I could go into detail on how much fun they are or how they are so different from American baseball games, but I want everyone to get out and experience it for themselves. I’m going to give you some tips and attempt to teach you one of the cheers though, so you can be a part of the excitement. Be sure to purchase your tickets in advance at one of the convenience stores or at the local Iwakuni Station ticket window. The Hiroshima Carp are doing very well so far this season so the games are even more popular. Information and Referral has copies of the game schedule to help you plan ahead. There are a range of tickets to choose from. Ticket prices start from approximately ¥2,000 per person.
Instead, please join in on the chants and cheers. If you don’t feel comfortable saying the cheers, you can just clap along. One popular cheer when a Carp player is up to bat is -
“Kattobase! Hirose (player’s name)! clap, clap “Hirose!” clap clap “Hirose!” clap, clap “Hiroseeeee!” You can either clap your hands or you can purchase a noise maker and use that for the clap sounds. The word “kattobase” (sounds like, Kattoe-bah-say) basically means something like “hit it out” or “hit it hard” Staying until the bottom of the 7th inning is a must! There are packs of balloons sold where noise makers and other souvenirs are sold. Make sure you buy a pack and keep them handy. You’re going to need them. You’ll see why when you go. It’s one of my favorite things about going to a Japanese baseball game.
Get out and enjoy a baseball game J apanese styl e! Cheer, make noise, and eat some udon!
You can bring food and drinks into the stadium, but they will make you pour all of your drinks into their plastic cups before entering the stadium. So, if you bring a couple of cans of beer, you will have to open and pour both beers into the plastic cups they provide. The same goes for bottled water or sodas. Bring plenty of yen with you if you plan to experience local stadium food.
Th e re i s n o je e ring or negati ve talk at Japanese baseball games. It is not cool to yell, “Hey batter, batter! Swing!”

The weather is warming up, the sun is shining and the birds are singing. The bugs have yet to start stinging and we have yet to start sweating. The weather is beautiful so get out there and enjoy it. What better way to kick off the upcoming summer than with camping? Japan’s breathtaking vistas and beautiful beaches are ideal for setting up a tent and taking in all that nature has to offer. Romantic sunsets and sunrises, soft breezes and the cool water can be refreshing. A few places in the area offer a wide variety of terrain to cater to every camper’s desire. The only real heartbreak is that open fires are prohibited. The loss of s’mores may dampen the purity of the camping tradition, but that alone should not be enough to discourage families and single military members from getting off the base, getting into Japan and taking pleasure from the great outdoors.

Miyajima Island has beautiful trails and stunning bridges hidden throughout the island. For a truly breathtaking view, climb to the top of Mt. Misen and visit the look out. Or catch the ropeway tram and look for monkeys!
The Bihoku Auto Village is a good two hour drive from MCAS Iwakuni, but allows you to drive right up to your campsite. A ¥700 admission fee for adults and ¥200 for children ages 6-13 gets you into the park. Campsites go from ¥1,500 up to ¥3,000. But if tents are just not going to cut it, the Bihoku Auto Village offers cabins at ¥15,000 for a four person cabin and up to ¥18,000 for a six person cabin. The higher priced cabin offers a kitchen and electricity. Reservations are required and you must cancel three days prior to your reservation or pay a cancellation fee. Bihoku Auto Village offers a number of little spots to add to your enjoyment. There is a grass sliding area, an athletic course and even play areas within walking distance of the camping area. Getting out there offers endless benefits in this mountain side camping area.
For
those
babies, offers camping along the beach. Along with cabins, tents and a motor-park, Hamada Beach offers plenty of choices in your camping experience. Hamada Beach covers a lot of distance and it is not necessary to camp right at the campsite. Close by is an aquarium and great spots for surfing. A word of caution though, certain areas are owned either privately or by the government and while they may be open to the public, camping may be a no-go. It never hurts to research the area and find out whether or not camping is available.

Miyajima Island
offers a quiet little campsite tucked away from the busy area around the landing. There is no camping allowed on the beaches; however, the campsite is but a jaunt away. Miyajima offers cabins and already pitched tents for a fee. The campsite is open year round, except
towards the end of the year. Camping is ¥300 per person. You can also rent tents (¥2,060 to ¥3,360) or cabins (¥14,830 to ¥49,440). The Miyajima campsite facilities are good, including a shop, bath, showers, water, toilets and covered cooking areas. Be mindful of the friendly deer. There have been reports of the deer raiding tents on occasion, tearing up maps and getting into food and beverages of the negligent camper.
Oshima Island
offers three very nice sites for relaxing along the beach. This is not to say there isn’t any excitement to be found for the surfers and divers out there. Katazoegahama is the first campsite on the island, and is probably the most famous beach with the Sazan Seto Resort. Across the thick of the island and onto the peninsula you’ll find Katazoegahama. Sazan Seto Resort aside, you can also find a campsite with ¥5,000 for camping which includes electricity. There are also cabins
Hamada Beach is a great place to catch some waves. Campers can spend their day on the beach, dive in the Sea of Japan or take a quick drive to the Aquas Aquarium.
Don’t forget to stop by Gear Issue in the IronWorks Gym to pick up camping equipment or get information on local camp grounds. Call 253-3822 for details.
starting at ¥13,000 and up to ¥15,000. Moving down the tail of the island brings us to the next campsite known as Zushigahama. Zushigahama is nothing but beautiful beaches on either side. Camping is available for ¥310 per person. Cabins are available for ¥15,000 and up. At the very end of the Oshima tail is Mustu. Mutsu gained fame for the second Nagato class battleship of the same name. While the Battleship Mutsu was a marvel of its age, the area is largely serene and pleasant. The salty wind blowing up off the sea fills you with a sense of peace and oneness.
Seven Falls
is also another very scenic option for camping. With reasonable prices offered Seven Falls provides a great camping atmosphere as well as some easymoderate hiking trails. A cabin will cost about ¥10,000 a night (up to 4 people), a site with a tent is ¥2,000 and a site without a tent is ¥1,000. Other items are available to rent and can be acquired at check-in.
And Remember …
Camping is one of many things to do around Japan but keep in mind there are proper camping techniques to take into account when you are out along the beach or tucked away in the woods. ‘Leave No Trace’ practices are the best way to maintain the original campsites for the next group of visitors. Always bring extra trash bags with you to the site and try to tie up your trash in the evening to keep it away from unexpected visitors in the night. Try not to break branches or move a lot of the ground beneath you when setting up your campsite. You always want to make it look like you were never there in the first place. Always use the recommended guidelines for setting up a latrine and dumping water if resources are not readily available to you.
fire department. Please stick with grills and stoves that are either provided for you or that you have brought. As always, please be courteous of those campers and families around you. They are also enjoying their time off in the great outdoors. Be respectful and have fun. WHAT'S YOUR CODE? by Amelia Carolyn Chappell, Personal and Professional Development Instructor
Once upon a time, the four-year-old you probably answered that question with “ballerina” or “fireman”. Back then, our worldly experiences were limited to the ones we created with Lego’s and Barbie dolls and we knew little about what a real job entailed. How many of us correctly predicted what or who we wanted to be at four years old? Probably not many. Are we able to correctly predict at 20? 30? 50?

As we age, our exposure to our surroundings and other people helps us decide what we enjoy doing and who we enjoy spending time with. This knowledge can help you answer that tough “when I grow up” question by helping you determine your ideal work environment. In his book, What Color is Your Parachute, Richard Bolles (2011) creatively relates this type of career exploration to a crowd of people at a party.

GIVING BACK by Todd & Emma Graves, Community Writers
kyo Bridge to talk and learn more about the volunteer work. We all took a relaxing stroll through Kikkou Park where he showed us a beautiful cherry blossom tree that was donated by his insurance company for the park. We then arrived at his large, beautiful, two-story, western style home and were welcomed in for some tea.
W
hen we arr ived in Iwakuni, Japan back in February 2012, the Kintai-kyo Bridge clean up was one of our first outings into the local community. Ever since that day, we have cont inued to volunteer for the Kintai-kyo Bridge clean ups organized by the base chapel. On March 22, 2014 we arrived at the Kintaikyo Bridge for the monthly clean up and little did we know that we would have an amazing experience that day. We were picking up trash from the sandy shore all along the Nishiki River when a local man approached us and started helping us pick up trash. This local man was Kashihara-san and he was curious about why we were picking up trash. We told Kashihara-san that it is a volunteer opportunity in which MCAS Iwakuni base residents come out to the Kintai-kyo Bridge and volunteer to pick up trash around the local area. Kashihara-san was intrigued and invited us to his home near the Kintai-
We had a conversation about the reason behind t he clean ups. A s we spoke, Kashihara-san wrote ever ything on a notepad in Kanji and we assisted him with
understanding and translating in English. He reassured us that he would not only let his friends know why we volunteer, but do his best to inform the locals in Iwakuni about the Kintai-kyo Bridge clean ups. We continued our conversation and reiterated that the Kintai-kyo Bridge clean ups were composed of volunteers from the Iwakuni base that would come out to give back to the local community. We expressed that it is a small way of us saying “thank you” for embracing us living in this beautiful country and as such we want to do our part in helping keep our host nation beautiful. Kashihara-san was emotionally grateful and thanked us.
This wonderful experience reminded us of something ver y important… we are all U.S. Ambassadors and we all play a pivotal role in building strong, positive, lasting relationships with the locals of our host nation. We exchanged contact infor mat ion w ith Kashihara-san and shortly after we received an e-mail from him letting us know that he had written an article in the local newspaper about the experience. The translated Iwakuni news article that Kashihara-san wrote was very touching and we wanted to do the same in writing this article to share our wonderful exper ience with all of you. The article Kashiharasan w rote was not only about us, but also about you, the many wonderful volunteers on this base that unselfishly volunteer your time to give back to the local community. As United States Ambassadors, take time to volunteer out in the community and build your own lasting experience with the locals of our host nation.

The saying goes "all good things come to an end." It's true, no one will ever be stationed on the same base forever. I am beginning to experience this because, high school is over, and my "internship" here at MCCS Iwakuni Marketing and Advertising Office has run its course. The opportunity to be able to go to the Marketing office a few times a week provided me so much information I never knew. Not only have I learned a lot about marketing, but I have learned to build interpersonal relationships with the staff in the office and Mr. McHenry himself, which is good practice for getting a job. The office will be looking for any high school students or Marines interested in getting volunteer hours or just using the opportunity as career exploration. If you are interested in helping or volunteering contact MCCS Human Resources, they will be sure to give you all of the pertinent information. This staff is very fun and professional, but along the way you have the opportunity to learn so much, and they are there to help and support you. Thank you so much MCCS Marketing and Advertising staff, it has been so much fun.

COMMUNITY ARTICLE
WHERE DOES YOUR TRASH GO? by Nikki Bennett, Community Writer
Did you know that in Japan, most household trash is incinerated? In America, we’re used to landfills where we can dispose of waste, but here in Japan, where land is at a premium, most trash ends up in an incinerator, if it isn’t recycled. And while burning all that trash and sending smoke into the air isn’t great, it’s the best option in this area. This is why Japan is so huge on recycling. If trash gets recycled, it doesn’t get burned. If you live out in town, you know how intricate the process gets on different days you put out different products for pickup— newspapers, plastics, metals, glass, etc., but you can’t mix them up and you must stick to the time schedule, or else! In the States, we look at recycling as kind of a luxury great for the environment, but that’s really the main reason we do it. But here, in Japan, lack of space is the driving force. And even though our installation has a landfill, it isn’t used for household waste disposal. (The base landfill is used primarily for food waste from the Clubs/ Commissary/Mess Halls and large items, such as old furniture, wood, etc.) All the household waste you generate gets sent out in town for disposal.
Although on-base residents aren’t required to follow the same strict segregating regulations like they do in town, all our trash still has to get segregated before it leaves the base. So here’s what happens:
Base residents are required to segregate household waste into combustible and noncombustible items before you pitch them. You should also pull out any recyclable items and put them in the proper containers, although this isn’t a strict requirement. Contractors then pick up the waste. They take all recyclable items to the base Recycle Center. The contractors also have a staging area where they will segregate trash that wasn’t segregated properly by the users (the base has to pay for this service.) The contractors then transport the waste off-base. Any waste that can be incinerated is sent to the city incinerator and burned.
This is a pretty big (and expensive) process. So now that you know what happens to your trash, here’s how you can help:
Segregate as much as you can to help out. At the minimum, make sure you’re segregating your combustible and noncombustible waste. Make a commitment to reduce your waste. This can be accomplished by cutting down on buying packaged products, reusing products instead of throwing them away (for example, donating clothes to the Thrift Shop), or recycling the product. Consider composting food waste and use the compost in your flower or vegetable garden. Switch to products that are more eco-friendly
So now that you know where your trash goes reduce! Reuse! Recycle! And if you do have to throw away trash, remember to segregate it. Every little action helps. M C C S I WA K U N I . C O M | J U N E 2 0 1 4
