All Marine Sports Do what you love, and get paid for it. by Jason Knight, Intramural Sports Coordinator

I am just going to come out and say it: the United States Marine Corps will pay you to play sports. Earlier on, long before my time as the Intramural Sports Coordinator, Headquarters Marine Corps had a Varsity Sports Program in place. These were the base teams, and they would compete in varsity level programs on bases across the Pacific. I have been told it was a golden age for sports. It was also very, very costly. The Varsity program had been designed to show off potential players for the All-Marine, and AllArmed Services Sports program. It was decided that this would no longer be financially feasible, and the Varsity program was discontinued by Headquarters Marine Corps. The All-Marine, and All-Armed Services Sports programs were overhauled to make it easier for servicemembers to apply and, with some luck and a lot of skill, get paid to do the things they love. Now I am not saying that Marines and Sailors here at MCAS Iwakuni do not love what they do. What I am saying is that if you as a servicemember love sports, then contact your friendly Intramural Sports Coordinator for more details.

10

We can provide you an application for All-Marine and All-Armed Services Sports. The application will ask some very general questions about you, and ask you to outline your skill level and last three years’ experience in the respective sport. Part of the application is your unit’s endorsement. All-Marine, and All-Armed Services Sports is Temporarily Assigned Duty. You will need the support of not only your section leader, but your commanding officer as well. Finally, you will need an endorsement from the Athletics Director here at MCAS Iwakuni. We wholeheartedly encourage all serious players here at MCAS Iwakuni to apply. For those servicemembers out there looking to get a more robust experience in their military career, the All-Marine, All-Armed Services Sports program is one more option available. Currently, major spor ts include rugby, volleyball, sof tball, soccer, and basketball. If you think you have what it takes to compete in the name of the United States Marine Corps, stop by and see me at IronWorks Gym. I will get you started.

Bon Odori

the Dance Festival for the Deceased by Mikie Watanabe, MCCS Cultural Adaptation Specialist Japan celebrates seasonal holidays throughout the year, and obon week is one of three major holiday seasons in Japan (the others being New Year and Golden Week.) Bon Odori, or obon dance festivals, are held in the summer throughout Japan. Obon week is generally when Japanese return to their hometowns to visit parents and relatives. They visit family members' graves and hold memorial services for the dead. In Japan, it's said that ancestors' spirits return to this world on August 13, and their families send them back on the 15th or 16th. Because it's derived from Buddhism, there are many denominations. The Hiroshima region has its unique religious customs of obon. When you go to Hiroshima during obon season, you may see many colorful lanterns called bon-doro at the cemeteries. In the evening during obon, communities will gather for a bon odori festival including performances. A scaffold/tower in erected in the center of an open space, such as a park. Participants dressed in summer kimono dance along to songs as they move around the tower. The dance is simple and easy to join. Sometimes there are games, food booths, farmers’ markets and raffle drawings. Usually around this season, one can hear wa-daiko (Japanese drums) beating a rhythm for the festivals.

IWAKUNI by Jessica McFarlane, Public Affairs Specialist

You live in Iwakuni, Japan. Whether you are unaccompanied or are part of a military family, this is home for the time being. What will do you do during your time here? When you go home, what amazing stories will you share with your stateside family and friends? Will you make a difference in our community? Continue a career? Get a degree? Travel and experience the Japanese culture? All of the above? Whatever your passion, you’ll need tools and information to make your dreams come true. If only there were one place where you could get every question you have answered by a professional. It sounds impossible, but it’s true. May I present, the Iwakuni Expo!

for active duty living in the barracks, for families, civilians, and even little kids.”

“People can learn about organizations on base and what they can do for you, as well as resources outside the gate and beyond,.” said Ms. Mayer. Mitsuko Yoshimoto, the Expo event planner, says it’s not limited to Americans, “JMSDF personnel can discover programs available to them, such as New Parent Support classes.”

[The Iwakuni Expo is] good for active duty living in the barracks, for families, civilians, and even little kids.

“The Expo is for anybody who is new to Iwakuni or has even been here for three, five, or ten years because things change a lot here,” explains Adeline Mayer, Expo event planner. “It’s good

But it ’s not just information and rows of booths. Ms. Mayer elaborated that “We’re going to have performances, crafts and door prizes so it will be fun and entertaining.” Ms. Yoshimoto added that “off base sponsors are very generous and will hand out freebies, gift cards, and souvenirs and on-base providers have great giveaways too.”

Think you know everything about living in I

Culture

The world outside the gate beckons with adventure, lifelong memories, and even friendships. Regional travel and tourism providers are at the Expo to help connect you to cultural experiences, travel destinations, and foreign-friendly hospitality providers. “There’s a cultural exchange too, since they’re companies and performers from off base,.” explains Ms. Mayer. “This year, there will be a Japanese competitive ballroom dancing duo and a traditional drumming performance.” Both MCCS and off-base recreational providers can get you set up with hiking, rafting, biking, or whatever floats your boat. “Expo visitors can discover restaurants, hotels, tourist destinations, and activities,” Ms. Mayer shared. “Doors will open to activities you can do.” See what adventures IT&T has in store for you during your tour. Take in a sumo match, visit the skyscrapers in Tokyo or the historical samurai towns in the countryside. You can talk to them at the Expo about their services such as: booking hotels, purchasing bullet train tickets, and reserving the Hiroshima airport shuttle.

Community

Would you like to spend your stay here looking to make a difference and making the community better? Marine Corps Family Team Building (MCFTB) Director Ben Singleton explains, “MCAS Iwakuni has many, many different volunteer opportunities: coach a kid, mentor a spouse, repair a school, clean up a beach, work in an office.” He added, “You name it; MCAS Iwakuni has it!” Mr. Singleton said that all you need to volunteer is the want to do it, “All kinds of skills are needed, but don’t let that stand in your way. There are many volunteer opportunities that require no special skill at all- just your willingness to learn and help others.” If you’re ready to make a difference in the community, Mr. Singleton invites you to talk to his team at the Expo. “Stop by the Volunteer Coordinator’s table and get the low-down on volunteer opportunities aboard MCAS Iwakuni.”

It’s also a great way to develop your résumé, network, and make new friends after you arrive. “MCFTB, Single Marine Program, and on- base organizations looking for volunteers will be at the Expo, and you can get firsthand information from the representatives.” said Ms. Mayer.

Outdoor Rec § 253-3842/3822

The remedies from nature include a filled thirst for adventure, a self-esteem boost, and an adrenaline rush that teleports you away from reality and distractions. The continuous and strenuous paddling will leave you just a little tired, but that’s only a sign that this is indeed a cardio workout which pumps more blood through your heart.

A strong core will build your ability to balance on the board for a longer period and will make it easier for you to focus on enjoying nature rather than falling into the ocean (which can be fun too!)

If it’s your first time attempting SUP, your muscles will let you know later how effective a workout it truly is. All body types and fitness levels can quickly get the hang of it, and begin to reap the benefits. Outdoor Rec § 253-3842/3822

COMMUNITY ARTICLE

by Miyuki Gray, MCFTB Trainer Are you looking for a new job or exploring your new options? If you have not worked for a long time, you might have difficulty writing your résumé. Many organizations need to know what you have done recently, if not the last few years. Volunteering can get your foot in the door. Are you good at event planning or decorations? Or maybe you have excellent organizational skills? Do you have physical strength? Can you teach English to Japanese? Start volunteering where you want to work and start developing new networks. You may be the first to see a new opportunity and how you can make an impact at that workplace as a volunteer. You can also find opportunities for volunteering by assisting the community. One Japanese L.I.N.K.S. mentor, Naoko Devries, also volunteers her services as a daycare translator. After meeting several spouses who needed translation help, she decided to support them all. She coordinates daycare out in town for parents who want to place their children in Japanese daycare but don’t know how. To get access to this help, all you have to do is contact Information, Referral, and Relocation. Do you want to connect in your community to meet new friends? Being involved with the community will help you stay healthy and positive while affecting lives. Receiving appreciation can also add worth and joy to your life. Building social networking skills will help you in the long run. You may gravitate toward the same group of people, but through

volunteering you can discover new friends with different backgrounds, which can be inspiring. By volunteering in a team setting, you can establish a relationship that may last forever. Often, when you teach sports to children, they will look up to you as their “brother” or “sister.” This is because you become a mentor in their life. With a small amount of your time, you can make a positive impact on them (and yourself!) This can benefit, and add excitement to, your life. Don’t have the time to volunteer? We’re all busy with jobs, family, or school. However, some people who work find time to volunteer during their lunch break or their day off. Whenever and whatever you can give as a volunteer makes a difference. You have to set limits. No need to feel guilty saying “no.” This is why it is important to have many people involved. One person can’t volunteer 100 hours at once! Are you ready to make our community better? You can explore volunteer options throughout the base at the Volunteer Opportunities page on mccsiwakuni. com. Take the MCFTB Passport to Volunteering and Volunteer Management training courses on September 7 to learn about volunteer programs. MCFTB § 253-3542/3754/7090

All They Do Is Play All Day ...

BRAIN

GAIN

by Tonya Van Winkle, Child Development Center Director

NOW THROUGH AUGUST 19

A few parents have voiced the concern that their child just plays all day and that they want their child to be learning. I understand. At first glance, the Child Development Center, or CDC, seems like a place where kids just play all day. There are toys everywhere; classrooms with children their age; and cool playgrounds designed for different age groups. However, I would challenge parents to look a little closer.

AGES 10-18 ENROLLED AT THE YOUTH & TEEN CENTER

Children learn through their play and develop life skills along the way. As your daughter sorts different colored beads, she is developing her math skills. As your son scribbles with crayons, he is building his fine motor skills to help him write essays in the future. Each week, classroom teachers create lesson plans based on the Teaching Strategies Gold version of Creative Curriculum. The teachers utilize their observations of the children and the children’s interests to guide their lessons. These child directed lessons are both developmentally appropriate and engaging for the children. If you are looking for a center that invites your child to play AND learn, I encourage you to call § 253-5584 and schedule a tour of the CDC.

What would I do?

WORK FOR

Go to usmc-mccs.org/careers to see what is available right now. There are many positions available including administrative, retail, education, finance, construction, etc.

MCCS

What if I’m spouse of an active duty servicemember? Apply with a copy of your spouse’s MCAS Iwakuni orders that include your name. You will receive spousal preference on all NF-01, NF-02 and NF-03 (and equivalent) positions until you are offered a full time job or decline an interview. What if I want to apply, but I’m not qualified for anything? You may actually be qualified, but you don’t know it. At Personal and Professional Development, you can sign up for no-cost classes or get one-on-one assistance and create a customized résumé. This will help you to state what your experiences are and how those experiences translate to the MCCS job that you desire. They can also teach you how to interview effectively. Everyone is encouraged to learn about all preferential programs at the Federal Job Search Strategies course offered monthly by P&PD.

Get to Where You've Wanted to Go! Where would I stay?

by Cameron Mangels, Community Writer Your tour is nearly over along with your enlistment. You’ve seen many things here in Japan, but you want to see more. How do you stay in a country you’ve grown quite fond of and still maintain ties to your beloved Marine Corps? Marine Corps Community Services just may be the answer you’ve been looking for. What benefits are there? MCCS full time and part time employees earn vacation and sick leave. They offer a 401K with up to a 5% employer match and an optional NAF Retirement Plan that can transfer to other qualified government agencies. Other benefits include international medical and dental insurance, and inexpensive life insurance. If you’re a veteran, you will get credit for your qualified military service time. Did you serve for at least three years? Then, you start out with more vacation time! Employees also have the option to enroll in professional classes in technology, leadership and specific job skills. If you’d like to continue your education while you’re here, Tuition Assistance is available. Visit Employee Development for program details and information.

If you had off-base housing, you would stay there and pay your bills the same way. Makes sure you read the job announcement thoroughly and understand what entitlements you may or may not be eligible for. What if I want to go to a different country? MCCS is worldwide and feature similar facilities, programs and positions. Your experience working here could provide you work experience to compete for an MCCS job anywhere else it the world! After you have experienced all you want to in Japan, you could use Iwakuni as a launch point to travel wherever else you’ve always wanted to go. In all, Marine Corps Community Services is a great place to work. They want their employees to grow and learn, and they want to help them get to where they want to go.
