You may be spending Christmas in Japan for the first time. Are you curious how Japanese people celebrate Christmas? It is a big event in Japan as well, but it is not related to religion. Japanese people enjoy Christmas dinner at home or restaurants with family, as a couple, or with friends. Since turkey is not common in Japan, we have chicken for Christmas dinner. Kindergarten and elementary schools also hold Christmas parties. Many towns create a festive atmosphere where everyone loves to see illuminations and hear holiday songs. The most famous local illumination is the Hiroshima Dreamination on Heiwa Street, in downtown Hiroshima. If you drive up to northern Hiroshima, (about two hours) there is also a nice park called Bihoku Kyuryo Koen in Shobara City. The illumination in the park is fabulous!
Christmas is also the busiest time for cake shops. Most Japanese people order Christmas cakes through a shop where you can get amazing, delicious cakes. You even see them at convenience stores. If you want to get one, please don't forget to make a reservation. There are also many other Christmas goods available in town. It will be fun to see. After Christmas is passed, Japanese people start preparing for the New Year. We start by doing year-end cleaning, like spring cleaning in the US. This cleanup is a big event in Asian countries. To welcome a fresh New Year, people remove all the dust from the previous year. Once cleaning is done, we start decorating with New Year's things such as shimenawa wreaths (hung at the door or on the front of a car to wish good luck for the New Year) and kadomatsu (bamboo decoration for the entrance). You will see them at shopping malls and grocery stores.
Japanese have another custom called nengajo, which is the New Year's postcard. Everyone tries to send them by Christmas Day because your nengajo reaches the person on New Year's Day. Every nengajo has a lottery number. The winning numbers will be released in the newspaper or on the internet around the middle of January. If you win, you can win prizes such as a camera, a TV, or rice. On New Year's Eve, people eat toshikoshisoba (buckwheat noodles). Eating long noodles gives people hope for a long, happy, life. Between late New Year's Eve and Midnight on New Year’s Day, most Buddhist temples start ringing bells 108 times. It is said that 108 bell tolls symbolize the casting away of 108 earthly desires. Each bell sound erases one of your desires. The bell sound makes you start the New Year feeling refreshed. After New Year's Day, people start visiting Shinto shrines, wishing for health and happiness. The first three days are very busy. People draw their fortune and buy good luck charms to invite good fortune and ward off evil. Would you like to go to a New Year's event with the Cultural Adaptation Program? For me, it seems that the month of December always brings about a time to look back on all of the traditions and rituals that are so important to my family. Whether it’s the store- bought birthday cake or the holiday pajamas opened on Christmas Eve, these events have become an integral part of our lives. Living in Japan, we have the amazing opportunity to learn about traditions and rituals of different holidays as well. However, traditions do not have to center around a holiday or a special event in a child’s life.

Here at the Child Development Center (CDC), we have many parents who engage in “I Love You” rituals when they drop off their children. For example, parents give their child a hug and a fist bump each day when they are dropping them off. These simple acts help to reassure the child that the parent will be back and empower the child to have more control in this situation. It sounds silly, but these “I Love You” rituals have prevented many meltdowns. These rituals are research-based and are a part of the Conscious Discipline teaching series that the teachers utilize at the CDC to address challenging behavior and instill positive classroom management strategies.
