The fight with COVID-19, though long, is not over yet. With help from the whole community, there have been significant efforts to return to a sense of normalcy. We began COVID mitigation efforts over a year ago, and not being able to connect with others for a long time can feel discouraging and draining. It is essential to keep ourselves both physically and mentally healthy.

VIRTUAL RUN SUCCESS As we strive to try new ways to provide events for everyone aboard MCAS Iwakuni, there have been many ups and downs. The new virtual run series provided a perfect way to challenge ourselves while staying safe and healthy. A few of the virtual run participants have shared their favorite memories.
The Conner Family Rachel Conner and her son started running last spring and discovered the virtual runs soon after. The virtual runs became a great motivator to continue running while her husband was on deployment. This quickly became a family affair and now the whole family continues to participate in the runs. They have collected all of the patches so far.

The Morris Family participated in the Harry Potter-themed “Ministry of Miles 3 1/10 mile” run. With a variety of themes for every run, you’re bound to find one that peaks the interest of the whole family. Rowan Morris enjoyed dressing up in his Harry Potter costume and running with his family.

We participated in 'Run the One You Missed' to complete our whole collection. It’s such a fun way for us to explore Japan and has become something that our family can do together. The Iwakuni Castle Run was our favorite, and we can’t wait for the Ramen Run next. -Rachel Conner
During the COVID pandemic, it has been difficult to find ways to have fun while being safe. We were excited to see virtual runs happening and thought, what better way to spend the day! Not only did we have fun dressing up in our wizard gear, but it was a great family adventure that we enjoyed safely. -Marvel Morris, Rowan’s mom

The Livengood Family Teena Livengood said the virtual runs gave her the opportunity to spend quality time with her 14-year-old son, Ethan. One of her favorite memories is the long walks she took with her stepmother on the country roads of East Texas and the wonderful conversations they shared. She hopes to create positive memories for her and Ethan by taking part in the virtual runs.

KEEP STRIVING Our activities stressed the importance of persistently moving forward with events, even with the chance of them being canceled. HOPE FOR THE FUTURE One of the current challenges is not knowing when things will return “back to normal.” The activity planners want nothing more than to serve the community and have their plans come to life. Jessie Mottola, the Club Operations Manager explained that some events take more preparation time to include ordering supplies, marketing, scheduling, and decorating. The larger events involve coordinating live bands and planning interactive games and prizes which in turn take more time and effort to produce. Jessie takes a positive stance on the current situation and feels that rescheduling an event gives us something to look forward to. They can use this time to put some extra planning into an event.

BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SELF-CARE TIPS Preventive measures such as social distancing are vital for keeping our community safe. However, it is understandable to feel fatigued by the current situation with no clear end in sight. Now is the time to double down on self-care and make sure you are looking out for your mental health.
Address the stress Some people may be experiencing COVID-related stress such as changes in sleeping and eating patterns or increased use of tobacco and alcohol. Without addressing the stress head-on, health and mental conditions could get worse. Awareness is the first step toward choosing a healthier path. Create a game plan Knowing what to do if you do get COVID-19 or experience coronavirus symptoms can help eliminate most of your worries. Ensure you have enough supplies and medication on hand if you have to stay at home for a while. If you have coronavirus symptoms, do not go to work or leave the house. Call 255-8100 and self-quarantine until you receive instructions from a medical authority. See page 22 for more information about coronavirus symptoms.

Nurture your emotional health Staying up to date with the news and social media is great, but limit your exposure. Be selective about what content you let into your life, and consider setting a time limit for social media. Look after your body You may have heard it many times before but, eating healthy, regular exercise, and getting plenty of rest will do wonders for your mental health. Meditation, stretching, or yoga is a perfect way to unwind the day's stress and help with your overall fitness. Get out in nature Get outside whenever you can. You can social distance while fishing, beachcombing, hiking, or exploring the countryside. There are some amazing places to see within Yamaguchi Prefecture. Get creative indoors Plant an indoor garden, play music, sketch, paint, or try anything that allows your creativity to shine through. Take an online cooking or language class. Learn the art of origami with books from the Library or online tutorials.

Envision the future Do you know where you are going in your next PCS? Spend some time studying the area online and make a list of things you want to do and see while there. Planning for the future gives you something to look forward to and can make you feel optimistic about the future. Take time to unwind Do something relaxing, like meditating or going for a walk. Remind yourself to put your phone away and enjoy the moment. People tend to forget sometimes that taking care of ourselves and those around us can be simple and fun. Reach out Take time to connect with loved ones and check in with them. A phone call can do wonders to boost your overall mood and health. Try to make this a regular part of your schedule. Connect with others who share similar interests and activities through online forums and meetings.

The key to getting through “quarantine fatigue” is knowing that it will end at some point. Make sure you stay engaged and offer kindness to yourself and those around you. If you need someone to talk to, please do not hesitate to contact Behavioral Health at 253-6553, or 082-779-6553 from a Japanese cell phone.
Quarantine fatigue is real. People are struggling with unknown futures regarding when restrictions will be lifted, not having access to normal coping methods, restrictions from friends and family, and frankly exhaustion from all of this. The best advice I can give is that kindness is of utmost importance. Now more than ever, we need to be kinder to ourselves, our friends and family, and our community members. -Diane Pospisil-Kinney, Clinician Supervisor

CONNECT WITH YOUR COMMUNITY AND VOLUNTEER Volunteering is a great way to connect with like-minded people and offer you a chance to provide your skills and talents to the community. While in-person volunteer opportunities are limited, think outside the box and find ways you can contribute virtually. Volunteer experience is a significant way to enhance your resume and gives you a chance to show off your skills.
Be a writer Community writers wanted! What are your favorite memories about living in Iwakuni? If you are a foodie, write a food review about your top five favorite meals on the installation. Have some hacks for easier living? Submit your articles to mccs@mccsiwakuni.com and your article could be featured on the MCCS website. Find virtual or in-person volunteer opportunities There are several organizations that offer in-person and virtual volunteer opportunities. Some of these opportunities not only build your volunteer toolbox, but also give you skills, talents, and sometimes certificates that you can list on your resume. Ask your volunteer coordinator for more information.
