Each year, the Single Marine Program hosts a Pre-Thanksgiving event with a bountiful feast of turkey, pie, and other traditional favorites complete with games and giveaways. At “Gobble 'Til You Wobble,” we served over 200 service members between both SMP locations, and everyone dug in and left with full stomachs. By the end of the night, there was no evidence of turkey or pie! Because service members are often very far away from the ones they love during the holidays, SMP provides events to enhance morale and wellbeing. And that’s what makes SMP so special— we constantly work towards enhancing quality of life for our service members, which is one of the SMP components.

WHO WE ARE
Taylor (pictured on the right) loved LINKS for Kids, Date Night for Parents so much. She couldn't wait to tell us all the fun things she learned about the Marine Corps and the crafts she made. She keeps asking me when the next LINKS for Kids will be so she can go and invite her friends to join! Thank you so much MCFTB!

Grayscale by Dallas Leigh Shuman
I am Love And I see no race I am Compassion And I see no color I am Kindness And I live in grayscale
He was a man He saw color, as all men do But he saw in a different way Then those around him He saw a ballet A dance of colours Mixing and swirling together In graceful harmony I am Love And I see no race I am Compassion And I see no color I am Kindness And I live in grayscale The man could only see the ballet of colours In his dreams For in reality All of the colours stood divided The white and the black on different sides of the canvas The shades in between, caught in the crossfire The man looked upon the separation of the colours and thought “This is not how it ought to be” I am Love And I see no race I am Compassion And I see no color I am Kindness And I live in grayscale
So the man set out to make a change He had a dream A dream for his country A dream for the world His dream was simple But only few understood Only few could see his vision Only few could dream his dream I am Love And I see no race I am Compassion And I see no color I am Kindness And I live in grayscale
His dream was colorful All of the browns, tans, pinks, and purples All of the blues and whites They stood together as equals Many opposed this dream Many shared it But many wished to achieve it through arms But the man knew there was a better way I am Love And I see no race I am Compassion And I see no color I am Kindness And I live in grayscale So he marched To bring his dream to life He gathered an army Of colourful dreamers He continued to dream his dream Letting flow from his mind and Into the hearts of those who could see That there is more to life than colours
I am Love And I see no race I am Compassion And I see no color I am Kindness And I live in grayscale
The man’s name was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Though he is no longer with us His dream lives on His dream lives on The dream dreamed throughout generations We are inching toward it everyday We will continue to dream the colourful dream Until everyone else does too I am Love And I see no race I am Compassion And I see no color I am Kindness And I live in grayscale I often don’t understand Why colours are such important qualities When beneath everyone’s skin Is a human being I look to him Inspiration at its best I look to him and understand that the world can’t be a better place on its own I have to work to make it better I am a child And he has taught me to see no race I am tomorrow And he has taught me to see no color I am the future And I am in grayscale
Ms. Shuman is an eighth grade student at Matthew C. Perry High School. She is active in Boys & Girls Club’s Smart Girl and Keystone programs.
In honor of Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, local youth participated in a Boys and Girls Club writing event. Creative submissions were reviewed and "Grayscale" was selected by the Boys and Girls Club to represent all members' submissions. All base personnel of all ages and skill levels are welcome to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. at this month’s Run/Walk.

Iwakuni Lotus for Good Luck and Well Being By Mikie Watanabe, Cultural Adaptation Specialist
Outside Monzen Gate, you’ve most likely seen extensive lotus root farms. But did you know that in Iwakuni, cultivation of the plants started over 200 years ago? Lotus root is a kind of vegetable that we call renkon in Japanese. It grows under the ground. But what we call "lotus root" is actually the stem. Iwakuni renkon are a specialty of our host city, which ships its local production nationwide. During the peak of summer, you can enjoy the tall green plants and beautiful blooming lotus flowers. People buy the flowers for decoration throughout Japan, and use the distinctive dried seed heads for decorative purposes and flower arranging. When the plants wilt in winter, it's time for harvest! The taste of renkon is plain like potatoes, yet the texture is crispy and fresh. Japanese prepare the vegetable several ways, and you can too. Cut it into steaks or thin chips, deep fry them as tempura, pickle them, or add them to soup or stewed dishes. Japanese consider renkon a food of good omen. The crunchy vegetable may bring you good future prospects due to its unobstructed view through the holes in the stalk. For a traditional New Year's meal, renkon is one of the necessary dishes that are thought to bring the diner good fortune. Still not convinced? Lotus root is rich in dietary fiber, vitamin C, potassium, and vitamin B6. Eating the local vegetable can help prevent colds, constipation, cancer and other diseases. It can also keep your skin smooth and lower high blood pressure. Look for it in grocery stores off base. In February, learn how to grow and prepare renkon with Cultural Adaptation Program. Sign-ups begin for the Lotus Root Digging and Cooking Class on January 9 at the Library. The study of stress psychology says that when you touch soil, your stress eases. Enjoy this refreshing farming experience and learn to prepare renkon so you can be healthy and happy! Cultural Adaption §253-6165

Bab History
Having a baby can be a difficult decision. Deciding to do so overseas can make the decision even more challenging. In 2012, the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) recognized that educating and addressing these challenges were necessary, and NMCRS founded the Iwakuni Baby Expo. Yujo Hall was the site of the first Baby Expo and offered fifteen different classes for those considering, planning, or expecting a baby. Attendees received information about local resources and gained valuable education regarding pregnancy in Iwakuni. The classes were well received by the community, but the location and schedule made it difficult for people to get to each class. NMCRS recognized the need for change and reached out to several local organizations for support. In order to better serve the community, the Branch Health Clinic Iwakuni (BHC Iwakuni), Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), and New Parent Support Program (NPSP) joined NMCRS in revamping the event. In 2013, the generous funding of NPSP allowed the Baby Expo to move to Club Iwakuni, where it has remained. The change of venue created a one-stop location for workshops and information about local resources on base. On January 21, the Fifth Annual Baby Expo will continue its mission of providing MCAS Iwakuni residents with the tools they need to prepare for one of the most special moments in life.

Grown! My How We've
by Melissa Hornbrooke, NMCRS Iwakuni Director
Should I Attend?
Deciding whether or not to attend is simple. If you fall into any of the below categories, the Baby Expo is for you: Expecting? For those who are expecting, the Baby Expo is an opportunity to prepare for the birth of a child. The Expo will provide expecting parents with answers regarding services available, birth options, finances,
baby products and contact information for support groups available during and after the birth of a child.
Already have a baby? No need to worry. The Baby Expo still has plenty of reasons to stop by. New parents with babies one year and younger will have the opportunity to speak with businesses geared toward providing new parents with products and services. It is also an opportunity
to discover support groups for new parents and their babies. Not sure if having a baby in Iwakuni is for you? Attending the Baby Expo is a gateway to gathering information related to preparing to have a baby, what to expect during and after pregnancy, and an overall idea of the birthing options associated with having a baby.

It’s a new year, and let’s be honest, half of us included “making 2017 our year to get in the best shape” as one of our resolutions. So what will be different this year? You’re not alone because only about 8% of Americans achieve their New Year’s resolution. With the right mind-set, advance preparation, planning, and some helpful support, 2017 could be your year. In my twenty years in this profession, I have learned what works for most people and what doesn’t. It pains me when I work with people who have so much potential, yet they don’t quite “get it.” But then I’m also blessed to mentor the focused who are unwavering in their commitment to their health. It amazes me. What is it that separates the achievers from the status quo? It’s their mindset.
I discovered this while working for EXOS, a company that prides itself with training elite professional and college athletes from every sport, national sports teams (Germany’s soccer team), elite military forces, and senior executives from companies like Google. Whether you were preparing for the NFL Combine, the Olympics, to go into theater, or just leading the most cutting edge company, MINDSET was where it all began. The first step in getting your mind right is to discover your “It.” What motivates you? What drives you to be the best? What could be your limiting factors? It isn’t uncommon to see people shed a few tears as they try to move past weakness and insecurities to tap into their purest forms of motivation. I was one of those people. Once you identify the potential positive and negative outcomes of this “change,” proper planning is critical.

Now you have developed your goal and discovered what motivates you. Focus on your plan. What time of day works best for your physical activity? Are you a morning person or evening person? Do you work out well with someone or do they just sabotage you? While you develop your plan, consider what physical activity you enjoy most and what you will actually enjoy doing. Getting in shape requires a lot of planning and support. Semper Fit IronWorks Gym is here to help. It may be as simple as listing all your favorite group exercise classes as calendar appointments-ensuring you get your workout in. Or you may need more. Start your training off with a pre-assessment. NEW Year,
New CAREER By Sheri Surels, MCCS Recruitment Specialist
Our government is hiring! While the task of applying for federal positions can be daunting, here at MCAS Iwakuni, it’s not as overwhelming as you might think.
First, focus on what position(s) you are interested in and what keywords to search for. Found a perfect position or two? Great! With the job announcement in front of you, concentrate on what the requirements of the job are and what qualifications are needed to be considered for the position. Your résumé should identify specific skills you have obtained that are associated with that position. If you have experience in two different positions, be sure to tailor your résumé to match each position. Long gone are the days of having one resumé for all positions you apply for. A great benefit to moving so often is that we can obtain many different skill sets that are often utilized in many different employment facets. Each duty location brings us new adventures and new experiences that line us up for the next job we obtain.
So, how do you stand out amongst the crowd? Let Personal and Professional Development help you hone your résumé skills to land that position. Your resumé should be indicative of your work experience and relatable to the position. Our Personal and Professional Development team are highly qualified and trained to assist you in tailoring your résumé to showcase the many skill sets that you carry. They are so passionate about their jobs that they offer no-cost monthly classes on résumé writing, federal job search strategies, along with interviewing skills. These classes are offered to help you succeed in your future career aspirations. As an HR representative who reviews résumés daily, I find that these helpful classes not only help you, but also help the hiring manager decipher skill sets that set you apart from other applicants. A common question we hear is, “Where do I need to go to look for jobs?” USAjobs has a specific website for Marine Corps posi-
tions, and it can be found at www.usmc. usajobs.gov. Have a passion for an MCCS career? Visit www.careers.usmc-mccs.org. When applying, pay careful attention to the documents required for all positions you are applying for. If a position requires paperwork such as military orders or a diploma, you must attach it to the application to be considered for most federal positions or risk being overlooked from the start. We are striving to become a more applicant-friendly environment, and the installation has launched a careers page for all positions in Iwakuni! You can start your search for jobs specific to Iwakuni including MCCS NAF, CHRO, Dental, Medical, Commissary and also Non-Federal Entities in one easy location: www.mcasiwakuni.marines.mil/Welcome-Aboard/ Careers-at-MCAS-Iwakuni. Please visit mccsiwakuni.com for information on working for MCCS or stop by our office on the second floor of Crossroads.
