The New Year gives all of us an opportunity to reflect, assess and move forward with renewed perspective, vision and vigor. The programs MCCS features this month align with both our individual and collective goals to start the year off in a positive and healthy way. On January 3, 10, 17 & 24, the library (253-3078) hosts their New Year, New Hobby program and on January 26, Health Promotions (253-5051/5126) presents their Women on Weights (WOW) program. Health Promotions and the New Parent Support Program also feature their Baby Expo on January 26. Many of you may have put aside travel to spend the hectic holiday season with family and friends; both Outdoor Recreation and ITT have your post holiday travel answer. Outdoor Recreation (253-3822) offers two ski trips; one on January 12 to Geihoku and one on January 26 to Saioto. On January 18, you can ski Nagano with the ITT team (253-4377). Martin Luther King Day falls on January 21; Intramural Sports (253-3067) is hosting a Basketball tournament for those looking for something athletic during the holiday, while Club Iwakuni (253-5416) prepares a special buffet for the community. Club Iwakuni wraps up the month with a winter buffet on January 25. This issue of Preview includes several articles highlighting opportunities to press restart in several areas of our lives to include education goals, financial planning, improving communication skills and even shaking off the post holiday blues. As we look through the pages this month, I am sure each of us will find an area of interest to help us start 2013 with renewed spirit. Thank you for your continued readership and I wish you a Happy New Year on behalf of all of us at MCCS.

wine review: Hess Collection Chardonnay & Totts Brut Cuvee
MCX JANUARY WINE SPECIAL
HESS COLLECTION CHARDONNAY is made with 100% Chardonnay grapes that were aged nine months in French oak which is 30% new French oak. Monterey’s cooling fogs and Pacific coastal breezes across the mountains and valleys create an ideal climate for growing Chardonnay. These grapes were sourced from familyowned estate vineyards. This Chardonnay is both tropical and citrus forward that will complement a wide range of tangy, spicy and rich creamy cuisines. TOTTS BRUT CUVEE is one of America’s most popular
Champagne, err… Sparkling Wines. By law only the region of Champagne, France can name their Sparkling Wines a Champagne. Totts Brut Cuvee is a great value for high quality Sparkling Wines that are made in the charmat method. Wine Spectator rated this Sparkling Wine ‘very good’. An excellent price for budget minded celebrations for the holiday season. Brut indicates a medium dry style that is neither too dry nor too sweet. This light bubbly has a zingy finish to complement your brunch and even an afternoon cigar.

NIAN THE LEGEND OF THE CHINESE
NEW YEAR by Nikki Bennett, Community Writer
Long ago, in ancient China, a ferocious monster once terrorized the land. The origins of this monster aren’t clear; some say it came from the depths of the sea, some say from the tops of the highest mountains. But one thing was certain: wherever this monster went, terror and carnage ensued.
T
he monster was known as the Nian and all feared it. It came to feed every spring and its favorite dish was human–preferably children. Villagers fled before it but the terrifying beast hunted them down, and every year several people fell victim to its ravenous appetite. The people finally decided they’d had enough– there must be some way to stop the Nian from gobbling up their populace. They were at a loss until one man–a monk–said he thought he knew how to stop the monster. This man was very wise and he thought the reason the Nian went crazy and rampaged through the villages was because the people all panicked and tried to run. Instead of doing this, he advised the people to confront the Nian. When asked how they could defeat such a ferocious beast, the monk laid out his plan. The Nian, he said, was afraid of loud noises and the color red. If, instead of running away, they could stand their ground and make lots of noise, they would scare the monster and drive him away. So the people got pots, pans, gongs, drums, bells and firecrackers together. They hung red cloth on their doors and draped red over anything they could find. This time, when the Nian barreled into their midst, they were ready. Every man, woman and child banged on pots or drums or rang the bells or let off the fireworks. They dressed in red robes and made as much noise as they could.
4
Startled by all the color and clatter, the Nian retreated in confusion and people were spared. Every year the tradition continued. Today, it is known as the Chinese New Year. The spring festival itself is called “Nian” after the beast; the Lion Dance, part of the New Year ceremonies, portrays the monster’s first visits and the peoples’ victory against it. The Nian is described in several different ways–in some accounts it resembles a lion, in others a dog or ox, even a unicorn (although the Chinese version of a unicorn is not exactly the same as the European unicorn, which resembles a horse rather than a doglike creature.) In most Lion Dances, the Nian is represented by the colorful lion that bobs up and down to the drums and gongs. It is a symbol of the Chinese peoples’ triumph over adversity, the fortelling of new life and the coming of spring, and the chance to make a lot of loud noise and set off brilliant fireworks.
JAPAN HAS THREE MAIN CHINATOWNS WHERE YOU CAN WITNESS THE SPECTACLE AND FUN OF THE NIAN, OR CHINESE NEW YEAR. YOKOHAMA near Tokyo has a wonderful Chinatown. KOBE also boasts a beautiful little Chinatown, but NAGASAKI has a great Chinese New Year’s festival, and if you can make it down there and fight the crowds (and it is extremely crowded) you can experience the Nian firsthand. ITT offers a very popular trip to allow Iwakuni residents the chance to participate in this ancient and spectacular festival.

Feel empty and like something is missing?
Post Holiday
B L UES
by Michelle Northam Victim Advocate Prevention and Education Specialist
I know you want just a few more days off, another day to sleep in but you have to pull yourself up by
your bootstraps, try something new and change your “inner voice/self-talk”. An “inner voice/self-talk” is the same talk we tell ourselves at the gym when we say, “just one more mile”, or 2 more reps or maybe 10 more. That reccurring thought/voice is the one we have to pay attention to. Sometimes it is positive and sometimes it is negative. For example, “I’m so tired, there is nothing to do, I have so much to do, I miss my family/friends, I wish I was back in the States, I wish I had a job, I wish I didn’t have a job” and the list goes on. So if you start to notice you are not feeling your best, you are a little grumpy, angry, sad, or just out of sorts, what can you do?

You could walk to work in the morning. ► Get some fresh air and a little sun, even if it’s overcast it is good to get outside and get some fresh air. ► Take time out of each day for yourself ► Look forward to something new Start planning – get excited about the future. Birthdays and special events – Celebrate friends, families and co-workers birthdays to beat the post holiday blues! Life is short so make it a happy adventure! If the negative feelings, sadness and depression continue, please seek professional help.

FOCU
ON THE NEW YE H
ave you signed up for trips with ITT or classes with Cultural Adaptation? If you’re like most people, you not only want to experience the rich culture of Japan, but you want to remember and share your adventures by taking tons of pictures. To help you capture these once-in-a-lifetime moments, we put together some basic tricks and a couple of tips from people who know a thing or two.
USING
EAR WITH MCCS by KC Rich, Community Writer photos by Danielle Cรกceres
Who knows, your work may one day be featured in this very magazine. Check out page 21 to learn about others who have followed their photography passion and what you can do to follow in their footsteps. You could be closer to your dreams than you realize!
Simple Stuff Not everyone has a super-complex dSLR with custom settings and advanced editing software. Many times it’s only the cell phone in your pocket that’s handy when you find yourself in that perfect situation. Don’t fret; you can still take great shots.
> CHECK YOUR GEAR
Every photographer has a story of how they got their camera out to take pictures and their battery died, or the card was full (in some cases, still sitting at home plugged into the computer). Get in the habit of charging batteries, emptying media cards and inspecting your gear before you leave the house. TIP - Pack an extra battery, media cards and lens cleaning papers, especially if you’re traveling somewhere you’ll never see again. Nothing is worse that losing those precious opportunities. (Courtesy of Linda Cordes)
> STEADY CAMERA
If you have a tripod, USE IT! But the other 99% of the time it may not be handy, or even feasible. Take tricks from snipers (they shoot, too) and find a stationary object to steady your camera or body, take a deep breath and press the button on the exhale. If you have a large neck-strap, wrap it several times around your wrist and create a three-point tension between your neck, arm and camera. TIP - If you happen to be taking pictures of fireworks, you can use these tricks, but a tripod will get you those super-awesome pictures, so plan ahead if you know this is an opportunity you may encounter. (Courtesy of Emily Bart)
> FRAMING YOUR SHOT
(The Rule of Thirds) Are your friends cut off at the waist with their heads in the middle of the picture? Is half the picture of the boring wall behind your subject? This is one of the most important (and unknown) pieces of advice that will help your photography because it can be used with any camera. A simple application of the rule when taking pictures of people is to keep their eyes in the top third of the image, rather than in the center. This will show you more of their body and less of the background. TIP - Don't just shoot landscapes or portraits standing up! Get down on the ground, lie flat on your tummy, stand on benches, climb up trees or get on a step ladder. (Courtesy of Danielle Cáceres)
> FOCUS ON THE EYES
If you have a control on where your camera focuses, try to get your focal point as close to the eye as possible. They’re called the ‘windows to the soul’ for a reason and if they look blurry, you can lose that personal connection.
> FORCE FLASH Most cameras, no matter how many settings they have, include an option to override the automatic flash. This is particularly useful when the scenery behind your subject is well lit. Your camera might think there’s enough light, but the people you’re trying to take a picture of may end up being dark silhouettes. By forcing your camera to use the flash, a picture of someone taken with the sunset behind them will show not only the beautiful sky, but the happy smile on their face as well. On the flip side, try not to use a flash when the background is close to your subject as it can create distracting shadows or darken what’s behind them. TIP - Doing the opposite is also a fun way to create the illusion of motion. Find a place to put your camera (if you don’t have a tripod), set it for a long exposure and use the self timer to prevent camera shake. You can get some neat images where the background is perfectly clear, but people are blurs.
TIP - If there is a big delay between pressing the button and when the camera captures the image, hold the shutter button down half-way to set the focus and wait for that perfect pose before pressing all the way down. (Courtesy of Danielle Cáceres)
Golden Nuggets No one takes a perfect picture every time. Even the pros will take dozens of pictures before they get THE SHOT. The only difference between you and them is they have a few tricks up their sleeves to improve their odds.
> THERE’S A BUG IN MY CAMERA
Momarazzi everywhere will love this one! Kids are fun to practice your skills on, and one of the best ways to capture their joy, wonder and innocence is to have them look for the bug in your camera. Because of how camera lenses reflect the light, it often appears to your subject that there’s something in your camera. Kids will look directly into your camera, with the most amazing expressions and may even hold still long enough for you to focus and snap their picture. TIP - Don’t tell kids to say ‘Cheese’. Instead, talk to them about their favorite ice cream or put silly things on your head. They will give a more genuine smile if they are laughing at you. (Courtesy of Danielle Cáceres)
> DEPTH ILLUSION
Do you love that look professional photographers achieve where the subject is tack-sharp, but the background is soft and blurry? This is usually done with a low f-stop, but you can often get a similar look by standing further back from your subject, and using your camera’s zoom/telephoto. TIP - Try to avoid using digital zoom. Many cameras with this feature have an option to turn it off in the menu. Digital zoom is the same as zooming into a picture when you’re on your computer and the image will often be pixilated. (Courtesy of KC Rich)
Join Our Team! The MCCS Marketing Office loves to support local photographers by using their images in the Preview Magazine and other promotional materials. Just ask some of our past volunteers like Danny Farmer who went on to work for MCCS Headquarters creating social content for the MCX and Terace Garnier who joined the US Air Force to become a broadcaster. Not to mention the many others who started interning for us and ended up with a job like our previous Preview editor, Emily Bart and Joel Berberena who created some of our favorite MCCS commercial spots. Ready to put your skills to the test? Drop us a line at iwa.mrktg@usmc-mccs.org. We’ll tell you what we’re looking for and how to submit your work.

ARE YOU LISTENING by Jaime Yasumatsu, Employee Development Manager
HEARING is biological, we hear everything from the
?
phone ringing to the birds outside.
LISTENING is an art and the difficult part, because it’s actually the comprehension of what we are hearing.
“Are You Listening?” It’s a common phrase. Sometimes we say it to our children, our spouse, our friends, but when is the last time we have really listened? There is a distinct difference between hearing and listening. Listening is an admirable skill to have and one that is promoted in the Headquarters sponsored MCCS course “Are You Listening?”
A
s MCCS employees we take pride in knowing our customers, because we are also customers. We deal with the same life changes, hardships and celebrations because we are spouses, active duty service members and civilian Marines. Our Marine Corps lifestyle can be stressful and our Marines and family members may find themselves needing assistance. Headquarters MCCS created this course with the goal of connecting our Marine Corps community with the resources available all across the air station. Whether it’s a military spouse having a hard time with their recent overseas PCS or an active duty service member just back from a 6 month deployment, this course teaches MCCS employees at all levels how to listen and act if a member of our community needs help. MCCS employees ranging from an assistant supervisor at Club Iwakuni to a sales associate at the MCX to a director are all invited to participate in this course. Our mission is to give each MCCS employee the tools and skills needed to successfully refer our customers to the resources that are available in our community. The employees who attend this
course are given training on Marine Corps lifestyle stressors, effective communication and community resources. All employees walk away with a feeling of empowerment. We all have heard the saying “knowledge is power” and those words are truly represented by the skill sets taught during this training. We also invite MCCS specialists in different fields such as, behavioral health, professional development and health promotions to come and share their knowledge with our MCCS employees. They get a brief description of what each specialist offers and how to best utilize their services. The ultimate goal of this course is to teach employees how to recognize warning signs and listen to our customers, be able to knowledgably talk about resources available on the air station, and the process to take action. We recognize that we all live and work in a small community and it’s nice to know that someone has your back.
The “Are You Listening” course is here to ensure that we support our Marines, Sailors and their families. Are You Listening? is held once a quarter. Contact Employee Development at 253-4841 for schedules.

New Year's RESOLUTIONS by Troy Guyer and Rachel McCandless
About half of us make New Year’s resolutions; here are some tips to help you to succeed with yours.
2
DON’T RELY ON WILLPOWER; on bad days you’ll be tempted. Plan replacement actions that you enjoy. “When I’m stressed, I’ll walk around the building rather than go out for a cigarette.”
3
BE REALISTIC, NOT PERFECT. If you’ve made good choices 80% of the time, pat yourself on the back.
4
STAY MOTIVATED WITH A LIST OF THE BIG REASONS. “I want my daughter to learn good eating habits from me.” Keep this list handy to remind yourself often.
5
REWARD YOURSELF REGULARLY FOR SMALL VICTORIES; a hot bath after going to the gym or a new video game for losing 5 pounds. You’ll look forward to the prize when tempted to backslide.
6
TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE ASSISTANCE OF FRIENDS, FAMILY AND THE AVAILABLE MCCS SUPPORT SERVICES; it will make all the difference in your success.

Let us all join together as a community to stop the problem before it starts. by Heather Payne, Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist
NATIONAL DRUG FACTS WEEK was created by the National Institute of Drug Abuse to give teens the opportunity to learn what science has taught us about drug abuse and addiction as well as lessen the noise about drugs that the teens may have heard on the internet, TV, movies, music or from friends. WHAT EXACTLY HAPPENS? In schools and communities across the United States, teens and the subject matter experts come together to have an open, honest discussion about drugs and how they affect the body and life. The teens have the opportunity to ask any questions they may not have had the nerve to ask their parents or friends. The experts give the teens the honest truth about the importance of not using drugs.
With the help of MC Perry Schools the Behavioral Health Branch will go to the schools to answer any questions that the students may have about drugs and alcohol.
WHY SHOULD WE CELEBRATE? About a third of high school seniors have reported the use of an illicit drug sometime in the past year and more than ten percent reported nonmedical use of a narcotic painkiller. Also more than 20 percent of high school seniors reported smoking marijuana, the most commonly used illicit drug among teens, in the past month. These statistics may not be the statistics for MCAS Iwakuni, but the teens of this base will eventually be back in the United States where the statistics are coming from, so they will know how to handle the situation if they are ever approached with the opportunity to use drugs. Even the teens who do not use drugs can benefit from the information because the knowledge they may gain could help friends or family members who may have an issue with a drug. Drug use comes with too many obstacles for those that do use, especially teens. Drug use can be prevented through education and open communication with the teens of our community. We do not have to be powerless against the problem in the United States. We can come together and educate the youth and adults of MCAS Iwakuni, so they can feel better prepared if/when they are approached with questions about drugs or offerings for drugs.
