We have discovered in the past several weeks that MCCS Iwakuni was not immune to the effects of COVID-19. Unfortunately, the impact has been substantial, far greater than what we envisioned in mid-January when the coronavirus first started making headlines. Popular events like the Spring Bazaar and St. Patrick’s Fest were canceled as quarantine, and other visitation requirements, became too daunting for vendors and entertainers. Our cultural adaptation events and other off-base community activities stopped due in large part to precautionary measures taken by MCCS, local government, and other organizations. Subsequent headquarters guidance also discouraged these gatherings.
As I write this column, policies and guidance with the intent of mitigating the spread and impact of the coronavirus are changing seemingly by the hour. None of us knows how this will all end. Our intent is to continue to provide community services and programs for our patrons. During these times, MCCS Iwakuni will accomplish this in an incredibly dynamic environment where we will always be mindful of patron and public health concerns.
During this crisis, we understand the criticality of our services and programs, knowing we are located aboard the most remote and isolated duty station of this size and caliber in the Department of Defense.
Our already complex supply chain has become even more challenging as cargo ships carrying retail products from the continental United States for our MCX shelves were initially delayed entry into port. Keeping shelves stocked with high demand items is increasingly difficult, with stateside retail stores also having significant replenishment challenges.
MCCS will continue to practice stringent sanitization measures and will adjust operations when notified by environmental and preventive health professionals. During this crisis, we understand the criticality of our services and programs, knowing we are located aboard the most remote and isolated duty station of this size and caliber in the Department of Defense. This crisis will one day end, but during this period of uncertainty, MCCS will do our best to support the community.

general hygiene
guidelines DON’T SHARE PERSONAL CARE ITEMS. Don’t share towels, water bottles, soap, razor, combs, brushes, or make-up. Anything that comes into contact with someone else’s skin could be contaminated.
WASH YOUR HANDS PROPERLY. That means using soap, lathering up (either warm or cold water is OK), and rubbing your hands for at least 20 seconds, according to CDC guidelines. Rinse well. Dry with a clean towel, or air dry.
SANITIZE IF YOU CAN’T WASH. If you don’t have access to soap and water, use an alcohol-based sanitizer. Pick one that has at least 60% alcohol. Apply sanitizer to the palm of one hand then rub your hands together. Rub it over all surfaces of your hands and fingers until your hands are totally dry.
BE SKIN CONSCIOUS. If you have a break in your skin, cover it with a waterproof bandage. If you have an open wound, skin break, or infection, avoid the pool and other common areas until it heals completely.
Do not go directly to Branch Health Clinic if you are experiencing symptoms. Call and schedule an appointment in advance to reduce the risk of viral transmission. Appointments

covid - 19 Corona • Virus • Disease Coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, is a contagious respiratory illness making its way across the globe. Traditionally, coronavirus is an illness that circulates through populations, more commonly referred to as the common cold or flu. COVID-19 is a novel (new) and more aggressive strain of the virus. As world health organizations rally to create a vaccine, we must come together as a community to face this challenge.

The first known case of the virus was discovered in Wuhan, China in December of 2019. COVID-19 is capable of infecting everyone regardless of their age, gender, race, or medical history. Outside of direct exposure, the virus can also spread by touching your mouth, nose, or eyes after touching the surface of an object containing COVID-19. Several changes have come to our community in recent days to maintain public health. Social distancing and good hygiene habits are also essential to protecting yourself. However, these preventative measures are only part of the equation. We need you to remain calm, be understanding, and do your part so we can overcome this challenge together.

stress Management It is natural for many to experience increased stress when routines are altered, and we have concerns for family and friends who are away from us. Recent events have brought many interruptions to your routine and feelings of isolation. Please, take time out to look after your mental health.
• Overexposure to news outlets can increase stress, particularly when involving mixed messages. Minimize watching, reading, or listening to news that could cause you to feel anxious or distressed. • Take regular breaks from social media. It’s okay to check-in, but during the off-time, mute triggering notifications or place your phone on silent. • Maintain your daily routine as much as possible. Wake up at the same time, eat similar meals, try to exercise, and keep your regular bedtime. Now is a great time to start an activity that you haven’t had time for. • Take advantage of the free resources offered online such as museum and zoo tours, educational apps, exercise videos/apps, online classes, and books. • Maintain contact with your supports such as family and friends throughout this time.

EXHALE FOR 8 SECONDS The following steps should all be carried out in the cycle of one breath: 1. First, let your lips part. Make a whooshing sound, exhaling completely through your mouth. 2. Next, close your lips, inhaling silently through your nose as you count to 4 in your head. 3. Hold your breath for a 7-second count. 4. Make another whooshing exhale from your mouth for an 8-second count. 5. Complete this cycle for 4 breaths. Adjust timing to suit your needs.

There is a lot of hearsay and misinformation floating around the community. Don’t panic, remain vigilant, and follow the information officially distributed by the installation. If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms, call and schedule an appointment with the Branch Health Clinic.

PREVENTION • Avoid close contact with people who are sick. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. • Stay home if you are sick. • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash. • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe. • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
The CDC does not recommend that healthy people wear a face mask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19. Face masks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others.
We recommend you limit your exposure to COVID-19 as we face this challenge together. Stay informed, take an honest look at the current situation, and choose the best course of action. Traveling to destinations with confirmed cases of the coronavirus is strongly discouraged. Installation leadership will continue to provide more specific guidance to our community to ensure we are properly protected.
Do not go directly to Branch Health Clinic if you are experiencing symptoms. Call and schedule an appointment in advance to reduce the risk of viral transmission.

Do not go to the Post Office, do not go to the gym, do not go to 7-Eleven, do not go to the Commissary, do not leave your quarters.
Who is subject to R.O.M.? If you came from anywhere on the planet to Japan, you are in a non-waiverable R.O.M. for 14 days. If you had close physical contact with someone on R.O.M., you may be subject to R.O.M. and should contact your chain

and community have rallied to support you in this time of need. Your first line contact is your Unit Readiness Coordinator or Ombudsman, there is also another resource: a team of volunteers who may be able to assist you, you can email them at help.iwakuni@gmail.com.
Why are we doing R.O.M.? R.O.M. reduces the risk of spreading infection and isolates anyone who may be unknowingly infected, but ONLY if we practice the procedures in place. Anyone who violates the good health practices established over the past month puts the entire community at risk. COVID-19 knows no rank, position, title, or job, so it is the responsibility of all of us to follow all health procedures. We need your help to keep our community safe.
I am on R.O.M., can I leave my quarters to go outside? No, you cannot leave your quarters.
Unfortunately, because you would transit through common space, you would not be able to go outside. The purpose of R.O.M. is to mitigate risk and being in a common space has too much risk involved. If you live in a tower or the barracks, you cannot leave your quarters to go outside.
My family and I will be in R.O.M. status upon arrival at MCAS Iwakuni, and I understand that I am required to check-in to family housing within two workdays? How can I check-in while on R.O.M. status? You can email family housing at iwknfamilyhousing@usmc.mil, or give them a call at 253-5541 or 5542, and let them know that you have arrived on station.
